When put in the right hands, the Genesis was capable of producing some amazing music. Couple that with the fact that the YM2612 isn't sample based and has no real "bitrate" or compression to worry about... You get some beautifully clear instrumentation from it. The Genesis' audio really was amazing when you had someone working to make it sound good. I'd say better than the SNES in many ways. But I also have a soft spot for FM Synth.
How have I never heard of this game or its music before?! This is so good, the bells are used so well! Been listening to The Red Woods on repeat for like an hour
I dunno why but to me, Matt's composition style always seemed like a mixture between Japanese and American game music. Its like he hit that silver lining and as a result has a style that I can distinguish easily. Really cool! Thanks for uploading!
The Beach! The Cove! Stage Clear! Pyramids! Darkskull Castle! Racrock Forge! Game Over! You rarely got crystal clear, mysterious, music like this on the SNES, for all its bells and whistles. I identified with Puggsy and with people like Puggsy. I hope I still do.It's as if Sega said to programmers 'Make some psychedelic trip beamed from some ancient past'. Mike Oldfield would be proud of some of this music , I'd hope. The Light House was, and is, such a perfect track - and level - to me. It makes me so sad for the 90s. It was so innocent, even more than the 80s. I miss it and I miss '90s people'.

Only the Europeans could make a game where you play as a guy that looks that fucked up but has a soundtrack this good. That is truly the combination that Europeans excelled at back in the day.

@3695reddragon If you look carefully just under Puggsy's nose and between his sunglasses you'll see that he actually does have a mouth, it's just harder to see because his mouth is closed on the front whereas it's open on the back.
Old comment i know but it’s really easy, either rip it from the rom, record it from original hardware, or record the music from the rom directly and use a program to mute the SFX
Whaaaat? How can you not love a game this old with physics? Haha. I just loved how Puggsy looked in shoes. Looked like some AirForce-1's, especially with the sunglasses.

Man, Furniss really liked those FM bells, didn't he? Can't blame him.
Also that Celtic influence on Red Woods. Damn. European VGM at its best.

That's... honestly super cool to think about, and I can sort of hear what you mean. Really, it just makes me appreciate Matt's work more.
He probably had experience on European computers like Japanese composers did on PC-98 and Sharp X68000.
Same here. First time I listened G-Loc I thought it was made by a japanese composer.
Probably because he isn't American or Japanese. lol
Wait what, G-Loc was a Matt Furniss score??
You got to love the classic Genesis music playing it sounds very smoothly something you haven't heard before until late 90s it's very lovely
11:19 is my favourite one.
Sounds like Leander maybe?
The Red Woods is astounding.
My favorite too. There's something mysterious yet peaceful about that track.

That brings back great memories of rainy afternoons (and sunny ones too) spent on my Genesis
One of the best scores of the Mega Drive era, I've loved it since 1993 and I still do.
Another hidden gem of a soundtrack of a cool looking game I didnt get to play. Light House is my favorite... and The Beach.
Of all the Matt Furniss Mega Drive soundtracks I’ve listened to, Puggsy is my favourite from him.
One of the best OSTs ever! Thank you so much!
