This has to be the most meaningful conversation to date I've seen on TH-cam. Thanks for having him on Bob I will be looking forward to reading this book
Mate is the definition of the guy who speaks with authority but provides no reason to accept what he's saying. There's a a kind of guru quality to him that people find appealing, but that also allows him to bend the facts beyond what is scientifically accepted.
I think why we are scared to use the word Trauma is we don't want to blame are parents for intentionally hurting us or not loving, but I think good Ppl can hurt ppl. We're are human and make mistakes
It doesn't seem like he actually provides any empirical evidence to back up his claim that "trauma" is at the root of most of our problems. I think behavioural geneticists are increasingly showing that genetics are more important in shaping our personality than previously thought, and that the environmental contribution which is most important is that of the "non-shared environment". Also, when Bob brings up the fact that anxiety likely has evolutionary roots, he just flatly denies the fact, again without providing any evidence. This isn't going to convince anyone who isn't already in agreement with him.
Would you like him to spout of citations during a conversation? His books are well researched and cited. The trauma literature is robust for over 50 years. I think you are somewhat misinterpreting findings from epigenetic research which suggests that while genes may lay initial foundation they are highly malleable to the environment. Including trauma, among everything else.
Read his book. He addresses this cultural genetic fundementalism in depth and provides plenty of evidence and studies to refute it. When we talk about the contribution of genes on health and illness we also need to focus in on epigenetics because genes don't function in isolation from their environment.

I would like to know (even though I know it's highly personal) what happened between Mr. Maté and his son Aaron. I heard they are in some antagonism - I mean, in politics Aaron being right-wing conservative and Mr. Maté left-wing, but also personally. Mr. Maté mentions here and there some regrettable choices towards his children etc. maybe it's in the book I have to read it. Not here to judge, my mom beat me and abused me quite harshly and during my whole life I tried to understand it and find in her the good, even though she never changed or regretted it.
I haven't watched this yet -- but I immediately clicked like! I enjoyed Mate's Hungry Ghosts, and I am thrilled to see Bob talking to another scientist who touches spirituality. Almost as thrilling as when he got John Vervaeke on. Looking forward to this.
Love Gabor but I feel he was putting Wright in an inappropriately vulnerable position with his boundary intrusive psychological delving. Didn't like it or like seeing Bob squirm
@@ashforghani5109 It seems to me that there are underappreciated forms of trauma that have been largely overlooked and most people can benefit by addressing them. I think the way Mate goes about interrogating Bob about his childhood and trying to prove it is off-putting.
The same way it was done 100 years ago: organized labor, active labor parties, social democratic policies, progressive taxation, regulation on corporations, etc.
This guy’s alright, but I would just note the similarities between his pitch and that of Scientology: childhood trauma hobbles us, we provide talk therapy to free you.
If you read one of his books you'll see that he doesn't say this. I just finished his book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, about addiction, and it is an extremely complex situation that requires a book to explain.
@@littleflags He is very suspicious of businesses motives. Let me give my background. I worked in several large corporations for forty years. My perspective is that businesses are on the whole the most ethical institutions in society, yes even with profit motive, and maybe because of profit motive. My job was in R&D and our products were our babies. We wanted them to provide a great service to society, and yes, therefore to be profitable. Much of the corruption we see in business lays at the feet of government corruption. My God, when you are accomplishing and producing the abundance we have from business, there will be cases of business corruption. Cynicism creates a barrier that isolates us from seeing each other. It's a great problem on all sides.
Dr Maté's work is deeply important and has changed my life for the better. Thanks for the conversation Bob.

Yeah, he practices *eminence*-based medicine, rather than *evidence*-based medicine.
Looking for the book Gabor mentions at 70mins - Many Holocausts. Cant find it. Any idea who the author is?

Anyone think about Carl Rogers when the topic of Authenticity came up?
His ideas deserve more exposure (versus the likes of pseudos like Jordan Peterson). Good call inviting him Bob...
JP is one of the GREATEST public intellectuals
His ideas are basically repackaged Freud, nothing original and barely scientific.

It's definitely a therapy session.
Thank you!

Bob SHOULD squirm
I don't believe simple solutions, for example someone claiming everyone has "trauma". World is too complex.
I am tired of people saying 1 thing is the answer. Trauma, or carnivore diet. They are both fads like crash diets.

Mr. Trauma see almost everything as trauma. I tried reading one of his books but didn't make it passed 30 pages. Maybe I am just tooooo traumatized.
@@thomasbarchen You are
What an ignorant, pessimistic take
The Myth of Trauma.
The ill behavior of capitalists and of the state. Dr. Mate summarizes this well, but how do we shape a better economic system?
The same way it was done 100 years ago: organized labor, active labor parties, social democratic policies, progressive taxation, regulation on corporations, etc.
It's not a country- just a business club for the rich. Solution? If I'm ever able to relocate to a more people first country - I'm there.
Reciprocal Altruism is the therapy payment ☯️🙏 ; ☮️.
Loving this deep dive 🌊🗝🌊🐇
There’s a correlation between trauma and for example being a addict or, as Mate says becoming Hitler but no causation!
talk about confirmation bias... ick. he basically made you spoon feed him his own analysis just so he could jam in his point.
GOOD GET, BOB!

That's hilarious
