I really appreciate the empathy Dr Gabor demonstrates when speaking on racism! The trauma of racism and the shame it comes with is definitely worth studying. I thank you Dr Mate for giving me the words that I needed to express myself in a culture that doesn't get it. A lifetime of suffering and trauma and fighting for awareness since I ya teenager in 1973-4 ... I love your vulnerability and applaud your courage sir to put words to the truth of human illness. Mental and emotional and psychological. My family came this country from Ireland after the famine. Layers of trauma there. But no one will listen to me. Even my brother who is an addiction therapist. He is a product of his training. Breaks my heart. I can only hope your words continue to speak to people who know this is true!
Dr Mate is so right about the disconnect between medicine and the evidence. I looked up Richard Bentall and loved this quote from an article in 'The Guardian' 'Bentall says people in his profession often struggle to know themselves. “There’s that old joke about two psychologists meeting and one says to the other: ‘You’re all right, how am I?’” he says. “I don’t think anybody ever studies psychology and successfully uses it to fix themselves.” I know that Dr Mate states himself that he still has struggles, but oh how he his helping so many people through their struggles, me included and for which I truly thank him.
I love listening to his inspirational speeches on trauma and how environmental factors plays rolls on human development. Thank you for all your teachings!
So incredibly clear. Immense clarity and insight, achieved through his own journey and, I am sure, a huge amount of reading and studying and research and enquiring and reflecting. Thank God that at 77 years old, Dr. Maté can swim miles and miles and travel the world to answer our questions. He has himself experienced so much pain and so many ailments that he is the walking proof that one can heal the disconnection from our Self. May he be honored and received everywhere so that his insight and wisdom can be picked up by many and inspire them to walk in his footsteps ‼️
Incredibly inspiring talk - captures the essence of the book. Sharing this far and wide is the quickest and most effective way to spread the word on what it is to be human ….. authentically human. Thank you Gabor for educating me and setting me on the path to healing ❤️
From the bottom of my heart. ❤️ 💙 💜 Our hearts gratitude is beyond words. How you have embraced the prickly pear of traumatic sorrow and suffering while at the same time holding hope and healthy wholesome mirroring to give back a reflection for one and all to survive and see life in new perspective. The broken found tools to repair their destructed life and found mending as you mapped them on the road life could have anew instore. We are One. We are strength within the Spirit to lift and raise and give water and light to one another. We belong to one another. To reach in and then reach out to one another. Life awaits this will and this way. Good Doctor thank you.
This man is simply awesome. I learn so much from him. He is right about the medical profession. It is very frustrating to deal with doctors who can't help past a certain point.
I've listened to many of Gabor's talks on TH-cam, dozens of hours. I understand much better about addiction and trauma. I'm seeing more clearly how we live in a disconnected culture that promotes mental and physical dis-ease that isn't just rooted in physical factors. Gabor spells out these things very clearly, based on his experiences as a doctor as well as his own life. Listening to his talks has also opened my eyes to the dysfunction and neglect I experienced in my own family, so I can see much more clearly where my parents neglected and deprived me emotionally ... and at the same time I can forgive them better because I think "what did they know?" and "they had no clue, look how they grew up." The thing I'm missing in all of Gabor's talks is where do we go from here? He gives us an excellent in-depth analysis of the problems and how they came about, but I hear no success stories. I would love to hear stories of people who overcome their emotional trauma, neglect, and disconnection and are living at their full potential. Gabor says "healing is possible" in his talk here. Great! Can you show us what it looks like?
Therapy with the help of psychedelics if needed… I have healed after 6 years of deep work with my therapist, its a lot of work but very worth it in the end
I've seen numerous talks, podcasts related to the this book and heard him speak about numerous practices an individual can take up: therapy, reading/videos on self development/psychology/spirituality, exercise, yoga, meditation, making the efforts to form healthy friendships , relationships, meetup groups, political/community groups, etc etc. stumble along at first perhaps but taking steps in these directions inevitably is worth it. Wishing you well on your path^^
Honestly... I think he is still on that path himself...where to go from here... I'd suggest spiritual teaching... Mooji, Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie have helped me. And my relationship with the creator has always been solid. We can't undo the past but we're not supposed to. There is a way to be at peace with it all✌🏾Be blessed
I began in my mid twenties because I felt shortchanged by my parental family. Then, at University I majored in psychology and learned about Authenticity. That, I decided would be my goal. I was sixteen when a boyfriend gave me a book called "Freud's Dreams and Reflections" or Freud's Interpretation of Dreams; I did not understand one word of the book, yet I intuitively knew that I must learn to interpret my sleep dreams. Many years later I began Psychoanalysis as training Analysand for a Psychiatrist in training to become a Psychoanalyst. Again, many years later I began reading Carl Jung's writings. Perhaps a good place to begin one's understanding of oneself is to look into Jung's writings. His Shadow theory will get the serious person on an individual path. However, be prepared for serious work. Best wishes to all enquiring minds.
I wish I knew about Gabor Mate before I had my children. They need to teach these to pregnant mothers during the antenatal classes. Had I known what I know now I would’ve got psycho therapy before having children and healed my own childhood traumas. They need to get rid of programmes like Supernanny who I almost followed, thank God I couldn’t be bothered with a naughty step. And teach more about conscious parenting and importance of emotional attachment in the early years and it’s importance on babies brain development. Women need more emotional support by the culture we live in.
There is a book called 'unconditional parenting' by a guy called Alfie John I think his name is that is worth a read too, if even only for 'reparenting' oneself.
I think you’d really appreciate Carol Tuttle’s ‘The Child Whisperer’ Children are born with an innate sense of who they are, they have built in talents and needs that are not the same for each child. She recognises these and how to parent children based on energy profiling. Opened my eyes to my own needs that weren’t met and encouraging to know this can be healed. She has also written ‘It’s just my nature’ the more adult focused version. 💖
Thank you so much Gabor Mate!❤ I am filled with gratitude, tears in my eyes, grateful that people like you exist, grateful that you will share your abundance of knowledge and experience

Thank you Dr. Gabor Maté much for the Myth of Normal. A great study, finally a way which go to the deeper, feeling A feeling which gives so much pains and misunderstandings, the urge to recieve all this knowledge by you, a knowledge of flesh and blood and transformed to real wisdom, this mixture makes it as food for the damaged soul, how to deal with mental pains and seeing a path of life which is without blockage. This book is a balm for the soul! And thank you for all your work!
Wow. Around 5:00 and following is a profound insight. We still invoke the philosophers gone by as if their theories have relevance to us in today's culture when in fact they could only be speaking from their own reality. Gabor sheds a laser light not only on this perspective but in fact his entire premise is that we can only move forward to a healthier society and individuals through nothing less than acceptance of a whole new paradigm. Rather than seeming daunting, that feels refreshing and possible. At last.

As someone who has struggled with addiction and trauma, Dr Maté's work is particularly meaningful to me. It's reassuring to hear that virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, and that true health is possible if we're willing to embrace our true selves. Watching someone I admire so much have the same processing issues I have from PTSD (38:55) was so validating. I am so embarrassed when I forget what I am talking about. It also happens to him! And he handled it with such grace!
I like what he says about authenticity being healing too except I was always authentic and much of the trauma comes from being treated as a liar when I'm honest. Authenticity is no longer celebrated or culturally acceptable it seems truth is almost illegal.

did u get to around 1hour 1:05:00 ish mark...he expressed a quote - those who are successful often did so by poisoning/destroying the world. now...lets talk numbers - if the majority wants to be healthy, we welcome his methods. say...a handful is profiteering off destroying the world..and they hold power...or..great power - how far do u think Dr Gabor's message will go? anyone trying to hold on to their "wealth" (which came from destroying the world) will do everything to silence voices like ours and Dr Gabor.
My rheumatologist agrees my PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) was brought on by stress. I have received so much vitriol from mental health professionals for promoting yours Richard Schwartz and Bessel's way of helping people. Incredibly happy he points out, it doesn't mean you have to be a sitting duck for other's unacceptable behavior's due to trauma. I've been teaching that for so long and it hasn't felt like there's much back up. We understand what is true, and it's great to have it validated by such a great mind! Thank you!
I am an orthodox monk, so I am saying this from a very specific point of view. Doctor Gabor is talking about things that the holy fathers have already addressed. Problem is, very few people (everywhere, but especially in the church) understand how they are harming, traumatising people around them on a daily basis. What a priest used to offer, and is still supposed to offer, is that safe environment that does not judge, but lets you express yourself, and through understanding, fight and heal these traumas that have been inflicted upon us all. On totally different roads and from very different reading lists (so to say), I am glad I have found common ground with this (recently discovered) treasure of a man, which I believe is doing the work of God through the experience and understanding he is sharing. God bless you, and as you already know, keep doing the right thing by adressing these issues of our modern society! We need a different understanding of ourselves and everything around, and the good doctor has found the way! God bless you all
Yeah, medical school is literally an eight year toxic hazing ritual. It's super ableist and yes, traumatizing. So of course it doesn't want to recognize trauma or disability. (Except as a savior complex with a pill in hand.) It's also often traumatizing to patients too. Please keep speaking out, everyone. We all deserve better, doctors and patients, both.
Just after you were born, no matter how bad the circumstances, a person, or people, gave you some measure of loving kindness, some amount of compassion. That was your introduction to life, the implicit knowledge that loving kindness and compassionate understanding are indispensable for human life to exist. The foundation of human life, therefore, is loving kindness and compassionate understanding. As we age we are taught otherwise by damaged people. 💔 Their misdirection is rarely intentional. They are simply sick due to their own early learning experiences. Once this is understood, we can seek help to dismantle the wrong thinking that we were taught and insert, through daily practice, right thinking, and thereby right actions. The teacher that I have learned from is Thich Nhat Hahn, and the practitioners that learned from him before me. weezi-💜🙏💖🙏🤠

I am in awe of Gabor
Yeah, and the pain shows on his face.
Incredibly inspiring talk - captures the essence of the book. Sharing this far and wide is the quickest and most effective way to spread the word on what it is to be human ….. authentically human. Thank you Gabor for educating me and setting me on the path to healing ❤️
I am always in awe for this man every time he talks
From the bottom of my heart. ❤️ 💙 💜
Our hearts gratitude is beyond words.
Beautifully said. 🌹
Keep up the important work you are doing behind the scenes.
You deserve a gold medal.
Greetings from England
Many years later
I began Psychoanalysis as training Analysand for a Psychiatrist in training to become a Psychoanalyst.
Again, many years later I began reading Carl Jung's writings. Perhaps a good place to begin one's understanding of oneself is to look into Jung's writings. His Shadow theory will get the serious person on an individual path. However, be prepared for serious work. Best wishes to all enquiring minds.
@@bellakrinkle9381 Thank your for sharing your story!
Thank you so much Gabor Mate!❤ I am filled with gratitude, tears in my eyes, grateful that people like you exist, grateful that you will share your abundance of knowledge and experience
that blackout in the middle was great. A real human moment in a lecture about real humans.
Gabor Mate is an international treasure! I love him!
Beloved, this is such an auspicious being. I am a Jamaican and a UK citizen. This makes so much sense.
A wise master who accepts himself as being human ☮️
I just discovered Gabor Mate on you tube recently and his scientific explanation sounds completely logical to me, I knew in my heart that it was something outside of me; my situation the government etc was making me depressed not just me and my perception of the world.
100 percent.
Is there anyone who doesn’t absolutely love this man?
Yes, and they need his wisdom more than anyone
@@remypetit1791 yep
I totally dislike him...ask me why!!
@@robynhope219I’m listening
At last.
He just made me feel sooooooooo much better about losing my train of thought when I'm in the flow.
I SO know what you mean😆
I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

@Dr Gabor Mate A group of us here want to say, we love you so much for your humanity, good sense, and extraordinary insight shared with us all in teachings and compassionate communication. Thank you.
A MUST read! The book is full of jaw-dropping info!!!!
I just got the book!
Dr Maté has saved so many lives! Including mine! ❤ Thank you, Dr Maté!!
As someone who has struggled with addiction and trauma, Dr Maté's work is particularly meaningful to me. It's reassuring to hear that virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, and that true health is possible if we're willing to embrace our true selves. Thank you, Dr Maté, for your groundbreaking medical work and writing, and for sharing your expertise on addiction, trauma, stress, and childhood development with the world. Your insights are truly life-changing!
They better hurry up with the Nobel peace prize... he deserves it. He's accumulated enough knowledge of the right things in one place to help the when human race. Not many live long enough to know all he does. We ignore him at our own peril.
It’s a blessing to listen to this man.
Watching someone I admire so much have the same processing issues I have from PTSD (38:55) was so validating. I am so embarrassed when I forget what I am talking about. It also happens to him! And he handled it with such grace!
Oh there's so many folks that forget about what we tell. Not sure if it's a result of PTSD, but we are with you :)
I like what he says about authenticity being healing too except I was always authentic and much of the trauma comes from being treated as a liar when I'm honest. Authenticity is no longer celebrated or culturally acceptable it seems truth is almost illegal.
Nothing short of brilliance in a society that is so long overdue for his wisdom.
I could listen to Mr Mate's voice permanently, I mean by seriously silencing everybody else, so that just him can speak endlessly about absolutely anything choses.
This man needs to be speaking everywhere - or just share these videos! He’s so brilliant
Good news! He is speaking everywhere!! The past few years he has been lecturing and being interviewed world-wide , non-stop is seems. All of his books are worth reading and sharing along with the videos.
did u get to around 1hour 1:05:00 ish mark...he expressed a quote - those who are successful often did so by poisoning/destroying the world.
now...lets talk numbers - if the majority wants to be healthy, we welcome his methods. say...a handful is profiteering off destroying the world..and they hold power...or..great power - how far do u think Dr Gabor's message will go?
anyone trying to hold on to their "wealth" (which came from destroying the world) will do everything to silence voices like ours and Dr Gabor.
My rheumatologist agrees my PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) was brought on by stress. I'd had two horrible years of dealing with parent health and financial issues, and the death of my mother pushed me over the edge. Thankfully I'm cured for now and am very protective of my mental health, try to manage stress levels, and hope to never get this condition again.
I learned something, always do when Mate speaks. So great this knowledgable doctor makes himself available for people to share such insightful valualble information. It all makes so much sense, much learned through his own life. He shares his own painful experience, making himself real when he speaks.
He's a saint
Thankyou so much for your passion and your continued critical thinking into trauma and health. There are few sane voices out there and I am so grateful for your and those few others compassion. There is hope for our future healthy relationship with ourselves and others. I put out there that one day I will be able to meet you. I’m interested in the connection between trauma, blockage of the flow and creative and inspirational breakthrough
He is a gift to the world!
Thanks Gabor Mate' for Speaking English Language That I Understand! I'm American! Born and Raised in the United States! Your Words Your English I Understand and is Helpful and Healing for me! ❤️✌️🙏
I have received so much vitriol from mental health professionals for promoting yours Richard Schwartz and Bessel's way of helping people. I'm a retired psychotherapist and know that your methods work. It's kinda heartbreaking to think that these people are working with/ further harming people. I'd say you wouldn't believe the hostility from them in the face of solid evidence of how effective your ways of working are. However I suspect that as trailblazers you have all had your fair share of kickback too.
I'm sure you have, especially with regard to using psychedelic assisted psychotherapy.
Anyway as you say you can lead a horse to water. We need to do what we can. I will continue. Looking forward to your book with Daniel re adult kids, this is so needed by so many.
I thank you for all you do and have done.
Sending my love and gratitude ❤️
Doctor Mate brilliant he connects the dots and an avid reader and was and still is a teacher
Thank you so much Dr. Gabor, for all you do for so many worldwide, you've sincerely and truly changed my life in a positive manner giving me the tools and knowledge to heal and live freely in this life 💫
Dr Gabor Mate ! Can't get more real! Thank you,Thank you blessed to have known you online 🙏
💞Thank you so much💞A lot of clarity that helps me and the understanding of intergenerational trauma and the resulting disconnect from the authentic self and the path back to self (self-care, self-compassion, self-worth). A very long journey for me and slow progress but combined with counselling and my own ferreting out many sources of information and insight there is progress😊
We need more positive out spoken people like him!!!
This is one of the best videos I have watched in a very long time and I watch thousands of hours each year.
All healthcare person should be aware that these lectures are available. This is such information to treat the whole person. Dr M thank you, my own self
awareness is much improved. I am grateful for my inquisitive nature and found your channel. I am very blessed in that my health at 72 is very good.
I wonder? was I always aware of the mind body connection ? I will bring these lectures to my PA next appointment ( that’s my next 15 minutes appointment
time). Thank you again🧘🏼🎇
Phenomenal man. I have all his books and they are precious to me!
We thank you Dr. Gabor Mate for his life long work ❤❤❤❤❤
Dr. Gabor Maté is THE GOAT. Everyone should see his movie 'The Wisdom of Trauma' Its such an important film. I really recommend.
I read his book Hungry Ghosts. An excellent book. In this video he said something most important, that there is something in us that is always present and untouchable, sacred. You can also find this idea in A Course in Miracles.
Protect this man at all cost.
Thank you so much for this lecture! You've made me think of things I didn't think were possible. I'm an addict and often struggle to find my way in this world. You've given me some hope that there might be a way to find myself. Healing. Thank you!
My God My God MY GOD... DR.GABOR MATE...YOU ARE MY HERO. WOWWWWWWWWWW. NOBEL PRIZE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR WHAT HE NEEDS. MY GOD.
Thank you so much ❤
Such incredible work & information with the most eloquent delivery - thank you very much!
Just so inspiring . Gentle voice so easy to listen & reflect on one's life.
That concept that illness may be driven by emotions, gives hope to manage it more effectively as the common denominator.
How we manage our new normal may be out best insight for any subjective improvement.
As a chronic pain patient of 3 decades I try envisage any opportunity towards positivity overall.
Thank you Dr for those insightful observations.
Absolutely he could change our world❤
One can listen to this 50 years from now and regret y ppl were not listening to his insights!
Thank you Gabor, for educating us on why we have a certain kind of life experience. In my own case, I would be less than I am today. At least I understand why I am triggered and can manage to find my way to clarity and to peace at most times.
May I say thank you, firstly from my recently deceased most loved youngest brother who sent me the link to your brilliant work. In the latter few weeks of his life trusted me enough to tell me that he had been sexually abused at age 5years old
He was then 52
He naturally had multiple addictions
He regressed to being the 5year old little boy, sobbing his heart out to me
We lived in different Countries then
I held him as best as I could do, I went & confronted his abuser & told him what I thought of him & was able to tell my brother what I did validate what he had entrusted in me. He passed away suddenly from a sudden heartbroken attack
His trauma triggered flash backs for me which almost paralysed me with shock
I am now in therapy & understanding why being a survivor of domestic violence, exactly why & how I had disassociated with myself in order to survive
You are my gift , a legacy given to me by a my baby brother, we grew up in a very violent home, I was his nurturing Mother figure & it was like he reverted back prior to his passing & returned to me during lockdown and restrictions, he was alone & four days dead before someone found him on his kitchen floor
I developed psychosis and am now on meds, which I don't like
I'm struggling to accept how this man, my baby passed away alone without anyone to be there for him
I am following your talks & you have helped me tremendously
So bless my brother, thank the forces that be that we both found the gift of you
Thank you
Wow. Heartbreaking and amazing. The amazing part is the love that you and your baby brother shared. He trusted you and you took such good care of his heart. That's an amazing love 💕. Do you listen to any spiritual teaching? I listen to Eckhart Tolle and Mooji for guidance in this life. The other reply you got about the mushrooms, well that sounds good too 😊, I haven't tried them. Anyway God bless you dear, you should feel good every day knowing that you were there for your dear brother when he needed you most. Thank God for you!!!!! I believe that you will see him again but I know everyone doesn't believe that. I also believe that he is still present in your life just in a different way (I also listen to Anita moorjani) . You did all you could do dear, let that give you some peace. I think you can be free of all the pain that you're holding and peace and contentment are still in the cards for you❤️. I will say a prayer for you. I wish you the best!!
I'm so sorry, bless you, and know your brother is with you always. My very best to you.
God Rest His Soul In Eternal Peace In Paradise!!!🙏🏻
Blessings of Strength to U!!!🙏🏻
Blessings of Courage to U!!!🙏🏻
Blessings of Healing to U!!!🙏🏻

Incredibly happy he points out, it doesn't mean you have to be a sitting duck for other's unacceptable behavior's due to trauma. I've been teaching that for so long and it hasn't felt like there's much back up. We understand what is true, and it's great to have it validated by such a great mind! Thank you!
Amen!! Thank you for your incredible work and depth of insight.
God bless you all
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you Dr Mate for sharing your heartfelt, sensible scientific knowledge and level-headed , compassionate wisdom.
Thank you so much for spreading your wisdom ! 💚🙏
Have some water during speeche, Dr Gabor. Love listening to you.
Thank you Dr. Mate. Just started your book! Amazing presentation
He will get the Nobel Prize is a matter of time❤❤❤❤2023
Thank you Dr. Gabor Mate 🌼💛🌷
Trauma is an epidemic. This Dr has helped me so much in many ways.
"We are stuffing down our pain" omg that is literally me
He’s a humble man and kind
Yeah, medical school is literally an eight year toxic hazing ritual. It's super ableist and yes, traumatizing. So of course it doesn't want to recognize trauma or disability. (Except as a savior complex with a pill in hand.) It's also often traumatizing to patients too. Please keep speaking out, everyone. We all deserve better, doctors and patients, both.
Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this invaluable resource!
Gabor is brilliant!
Their misdirection is rarely intentional. They are simply sick due to their own early learning experiences.
Once this is understood, we can seek help to dismantle the wrong thinking that we were taught and insert, through daily practice, right thinking, and thereby right actions.
The teacher that I have learned from is Thich Nhat Hahn, and the practitioners that learned from him before me.
weezi-💜🙏💖🙏🤠
just wow!! from the beginning till the end..
I tried to listen to this " myth of normal" book on audible but it was being read by someone other than Gabor Mate, and for some reason my brain didn't like that. I've heard him speak so many times and his words have way more gravity and I can concerntrate more hearing him speak personally. When I actually read physical books l, for example Russell Brands "Revolution" In my head I'm reading it in Russell Brands voice. Does anyone else wish that all these audiobooks could be listened to in the actual authors voices?
