Meinl cymbals really has a thing here that nobody else does. Incredible production for artists you might not hear otherwise. It’s this generation’s Hudson Music….just like the old VHS of Under The Table and Drumming I wore out
Oh man, that Carter video! I think it's at the end of #41 when he sets in on that flat ride groove (chef's kiss) and then gets into that triplet section on the hats.... I'm googling it right now!!! Cheers from Memphis!
Yep, that is just great. And I assume, also awesome marketing material. I don't have any Meinl cymbals, I just can't really afford them. I had a pair of hats once, and had to sell them a few months ago. But with these videos I keep hearing them and I'm constantly reminded of the brand.
Matt playing in “waves” slowing down and speeding up in tandem with the synth in the last part… That’s such a display of control over the rhythm and the drums / his independence creating beautiful musicality.
For anyone wondering, it's at 140 bpm. The motif is a 3/4 bar of dotted eighth notes, a 4/4 bar of quarter note triplets, followed by another 3/4 bar of dotted eighth notes. The fact that the quarter note triplets are only slightly faster than dotted eighths messes with your perception of time. And then at 3:08, it's the exact same thing with every fourth note accented, which makes it sounds like one big time-varying bar of 7/4. Amazing, as always.
That's actually a pretty cool way to break it down! Josh's original concept is pretty similar, but he handles it as 2 measures of 5/4, first one is 3+2 quarter notes, and second one is 2+3 So you get 3+2+2+3. Now the cool thing is, Josh is actually playing 4 notes over the groups of 3, and 3 notes over the groups of 4, kinda like this: (3:4)+(2:3)+(2:3)+(3:4). Your explanation pretty much sums up the rhythmic illusion that it creates Now, the 7/4 comes from metric modulation. Remember the original accent subdivision of 3+2+2+3? What happens if we add 1 extra note between every accent? We're gonna get 4+3+3+4, which is now equal to 2 measures of 7/4. The original tempo is 140 BPM in 5/4, but in order to add 2 extra quartes notes in the same amount of time, the tempo has to be faster. To get the actual value, we use a rule of three in this way: 5/4 (or 1.25) - 140 7/4 (or 1.75) - ? So 1.75 times 140, and then the result is divided by 1.25. The answer is 196 BPM and if you put a metronome at that speed, it'll match the song. For notation purposes, it would be ideal to halve 196 BPM, writing it as 7/4 at 98 BPM. Hope this helps to get the info deeper into your core!
Matt is so damn good. Last year he did a free drum clinic in Nashville and he really showed his versatility. He smashed jazz, hip hop, obviously technical metal and some other genres too. I really think he's the most well rounded drummer alive.
This is probably a crazy idea of mine, but I would love to see Matt and Josh doing a collab album with the Japanese jazz/post-rock band Mouse on the Keys at some point, as a fan of both music!
I've never seen anyone with a better mastering/understanding of time signatures than Matt Gartska (The Brain Dance, for example) He is on another level.
I'm pretty sure Iconic sold it that way because some people, including myself, like the jawbreaker candy esque look of a roughed up guitar. Nonetheless, he is an AMAZING guitar player 😌🤌
Chrono, meaning time. Stasis, meaning a state of no change, or inactivity. So chronostasis would mean something like "time stop" or "a state of stopped time".
This came up in my feed while listening to a work concentration playlist. I could feel myself getting the prog-rock pain-face while grooving to the drums and wondering who in the f is the drummer... of course, Matt Garstka, cause nobody else could do that.
This is an amazing performance, one of the best I´ve seen lately... Matt makes the kit speak, he´s so expressive, not just beats or ghost notes, or speed as others, it´s quite a continuous melody on drums. Love it!
Now that I’m feeling this as a 10 (3+4+3) it just makes so much more sense. The triplets in the 4 are so subtle, just feels like a gentle accelerando then slow up in 7 note groups.
@@matiask7633 yeah so the harmony and rhythmic shifts are displaced. I love when complex rhythm and canons de-emphasise structure like this, I guess humans are more geared to visual pattern recognition. For me the rhythm is the structure and the harmony shifts around it, but for other listeners it’s possibly the other way round. Lots of inspo here - thanks Josh !
Yeah, these guys have created an amazing piece of music. Dynamics, development, different textures, evolving rhythmic accents. Jeff Beck is in his grave raising eyebrows at the guitar work. Thomas Haake is looking over his shoulder at this fast approaching drummer.
Matt no es de es mundo, amigo vos saliste de otro planeta, no hay manera, sin desprestigiar a nadie, creo que Matt se lleva el puesto Nº 1, incleible, fascinante, Josua impecable, fantastico.
Hot damn this sounds incredible guys!
Oy make a matt garstka rythym breakdown vid will ya
But did they include the lick?
?
No, U
Holy shit it’s Adam

The best drumming videos on YT right now besides some of the better WGI/DCI stuff

Well said. Totally agree.

Yeah, I totally agree with you! And Meinl's playlist is long, that is encouraging

absolute cutting edge of human capability

Ahhh meshuggah does the dotted eight to quarter trips mindtrick too
Dude thanks for your analysis!
Are you like, some kind of wizard?
the synchronicity with the ending synth is on the absolute edge of human capability

Hmmm check out greyson nekrutman, he’s also an amazing drummer at all genres
im pretty sure I was there as well. He played thru some aesop rock yea?

matt is the best drummer alive
These guys are such an amazing duo, please never stop making music together!
Just absolutely stunning
It's incredible how he demonstrates the sound of the cymbals and composes so well alongside it. Matt is a genius
I mostly agree, but I can 100% guarantee he wasn't thinking about demoing cymbals when he wrote the drum part lol
Matt playing that synth rhythm on the hats was tooooo good towards the end
This song has been on repeat the last week. This my favorite duo🔥🤝🏾
I think this might be my favourite track of yours. The resonator pulses oscillating in the outro. Really gorgeous. Thank you
Can't get enough of Matt and Joshua together. Just mind-blowing stuff.
I will forever be trailing behind you, Matt Garstka. I hate missing you guys with Plini in Atlanta.
I've never seen anyone with a better mastering/understanding of time signatures than Matt Gartska (The Brain Dance, for example) He is on another level.
The world deserves a full length album!!!
They have one

Modern Value
I've been hearing this non stop for the last few days so good.
when the guitar is worn that high, u know its gon be heck
It's worn and worn high :)
Nipplerider guitars unite
I'm pretty sure Iconic sold it that way because some people, including myself, like the jawbreaker candy esque look of a roughed up guitar. Nonetheless, he is an AMAZING guitar player 😌🤌
Oh wait, you mean how high up the guitar strap is. Forget I said anything 😅
It's not even that high. This is where every guitarist should have it if they more concerned with being able to play well than trying to look cool.
Im blown away from this beautiy of sound they created. Wow
This is a combo I never knew I needed in my life!
Who is this damn guitar player?? Every note he chose was perfect. I’m floored.
Josh De La Victoria! Amazing and underrated guitarist. Everything he touches is gold
You can find some other videos of original music he's done with Matt. They also released an album called Modern Value some years back.
You gotta check out the album Modern Value. Absolute classic from beginning to end.
You should check the others songs he plays with Matt Garstka. "Iris" "Perennial" and "Kepler"
He plays in sungazer with Adam neely as well
I don't know what the hell chronostasis is, but I feel I entered that state after listening to this song.
Garstka is truly one of a kind.

This is a freakin‘ masterpiece!!! It’s one of the songs, that are getting better with every time you hear them. 🔥🔥🔥
Josh made his guitar sing so good. It inspired me to practice playing my axe more. 💚❤🧡
These guys are mind blowing
Love it guys! Always a treat to see these two play together!
2 indisputable masters. I love this song, and seeing them play this together is phenomenal.
The ultimate duo ! Love these guys ! Huge fan of Victoria 🙌
That tone... Eric Johnson level. Stunning musicianship by both.
Even Matt's beard is jacked! The dynamics in both their playing is mind blowing! Love this
Wow. Didn't know what to expect after browsing Garstka drum vids and having only listened to AAL. This was incredible!
The ending is phenomenal... otherworldly

Insane time signatures. ❤

The guitar's actually going 4 3 3 4 but with the note chnages in some parts it gets really hard to follow
