    1:40 that seamless transition from 11 to 15 has me very impressed. Taking the 3+3+3+2 subdivision then shifting it to 4+4+4+3 in a Tigran hamasyan style rhythm change by making it seem like it was only changing from eighth note triplets to sixteenth notes. Fucking beautiful. Then when it stays in 15 stacking the 5+5+5 subdivision, the 3+3+3+3+3 subdivision, and the 4+4+4+3 subdivision, I just ascend to the astral plain

    Up until 4:27, they’re both playing together in 15/16, or 5/8 with a triplet feel. At 4:27, Matt stays steady on the 5/8, while Josh modulates to 9/8 in a shuffle pattern, laying it over Matt’s 5/8 to make a 9:5 polyrhythm (9 partials in the space of 5 partials). Then at 4:41, it’s Matt’s turn to modulate to follow Josh. He switches to 9/8 as well, but he plays in a 5:3 pattern with Josh’s shuffle (In this case 5 8th notes every 3 8th notes of the 9/8 shuffle).
    Edit: yes I know it’s 11/8 at the beginning, but that’s not the part I was focusing on

      Yo my hero

    • @SamuelFeimer
      @SamuelFeimer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi man, Josh doesn't modulate to 9/8. He stays in 15/16 but plays 3 times a group of 5 which is kinda a 3/4 subdivided in Quintuplets. He plays those Quintuplets as 3+2 which is a "Quintuplet shuffle" that gives a similar feeling like a "normal" (triplet) shuffle but it's still the 15/16 with different accents.

    • @Andreorsel
      @Andreorsel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can count that first part in 11/8 or, how you look at it, 11/16.

    • @billmint8122
      @billmint8122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The song starts in 11/8, and the B section is technically 11/4 for an "over the bar line" feel.
      They continue to switch between 11/8 in the A section and 11/4 in the B section for a while, until they eventually modulate to 15/16 by taking the 3332 accent pattern and morphing it to 4443.
      Once that groove opens up, it becomes 15/4, again for that "over the bar line" thing in the drum part.
      They go back to 15/16 for a while, then to 31/16 (434334343 accent pattern), which then modulates to a 22/8 (323223232 accent pattern).
      The 22/8 accent pattern is then eventually laid over top of the original 11/4 groove, so we've come full circle without any changes that are jarring to the ear.
      Then there's a trading section similar to the into, except instead of 11/4, there are two bars of 11/8 and two bars of 15/16 cycling back and forth.
      They stay in 15/16 for a while, until Matt modulates to 3/4 in quintuplets, thus maintaining the exact number of 15 notes per bar.
      Eventually we reach the solo section in which Matt and Josh trade solos. This can be viewed as 9/8 or 3/4 in triplets, depending on the fills and licks being played.
      Hope this helps someone!

    I feel as though everybody around me hates strats. But I love mine and this video shows exactly why the strat will always be on top. It’s a very diverse and capable guitar

    Brilliant and bad ass! I get it. The basic concept going through the song is 1 measure minus one beat, either a kind of 11/8 or 15/16, and going back and forth, and breaking it up in different ways. Sometimes the 15/16 is played as 4/4 minus 1 sixteenth note. Sometimes it's played as 3 5's or 5 3's. Iris is similar with a 9 meter (a group of 5 then 4 or 3 3's, etc.). Cool math explorations and very artistically and energetically done. It would be great to have more bands doing and expanding this kind of very cool stuff.

    What's weird is that I managed to count most parts in 7/8 until the 15/4 shuffle comes along.

  • @sjograas
    @sjograas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The parts in 9/8 can also be counted in 15/16, and vice versa. Those measures fit together in such a nice little triplety way :)
