It's actually carved from a special marble that has a black and white vein pattern which happens to look just like news print. It took 7 months to carve and polish.

Don't judge a newspaper hat by it's cover. They all fold and wear them, even when they come to America. Simple talented hard working men, they visualize 3 steps ahead.

Often apprentices will rough out the piece and the master will do the finishing. The more famous you become the more apprentices you'll get. A lot of great work is done by unknown artists.

Michael Hogan Giuliano Finelli, from Bernini's workshop, is thought ( not all the experts agree) to have done a lot of the bark and leaves and flowing hair on Daphne.

egparis18 Well done for the research work. If you look up a certain Grinling Gibbons (actually of Flemish descent), a breathtaking woodcarver in England in the late 17th century, you’ll learn that he had a workshop in London- that tragically burned down- with over 400 carvers under his command. You need only take it a step further to understand his prolific output. However, in the finer details you can always feel the Master’s touch. Another interesting case is that of Rodin, and his “apprentice”/mistress, Camille Claudel. She surpassed him (which he was fully aware of) but never really got her due. She died tragically, and was totally neglected by her brother- a very famous French author. History resounds with a deafening roar of silence around hidden talents. One could go on forever over injustices. I believe you’re a cultured gentleman; it’s a pleasure to come across finer people. Best regards.

In the past a successful Master would have plenty of young apprentices to populate his work shop. Happy to learn, eager to help and do the removal of excess rock before things get more serious. Today these young people seem to spend much time playing on their smartphones and power tools replaced them. Also modern social protection laws make it much more difficult to have many of such helpers in Europe.
