  • Hey, @2bikemikesguitartopics145, @oldasrocks9121, @J-man9457 and fellow tubers, what's the deal with this?
    A follow up video...
    • Trouble shooting neck ...
Note: The pick up has always been hot too the touch since installed. I noticed that when I touched it I would get "hum" or something like it. I thought perhaps it was the old pots, switch or wiring.
Maybe this is normal? If not, what needs to be addressed?
    Open to your thoughts.
Also, what is your go to capacitor?

Along the way, I'll offer my take on questions like, “Should I buy a budget guitar? “Is upgrading a budget guitar worth it?” What is the cost difference between upgrading budget guitars with the price of brand name guitars? Do all budget guitars need upgrade? and more.

Rock on with your bad selves.

When you unplug a guitar cable and touch the tip it makes that same buzzing sound.
I think either your jack wires are reversed, or part of your switch connection is touching the shielding tape, or a single braid of one wire is making contact with another or the pickup is defective. The black wire isn't properly connected at the pickup itself...🤔
Try unsoldering the neck pickup ground wire from the pot, then touch the neck pickup (should be quiet with the ground disconnected haha) and then while holding the covered part of the wire, touch the exposed wire to another area for to see if you get a better ground elsewhere🤔

Thanks, J. Mike and I have concluded that it is a neck pickup issue as nothing else is effected. Here is a video I made for him about the issue: I “think” I found the issue… th-cam.com/video/cueDfYrlUSc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YI_YxTZBsJNBQBKQ - what do you think?

Hey, @2bikemikesguitartopics145 and @J-man9457. So, I put the same pickups in the Fojill tele and it did not react the same with as the Firefly did (that hum / buzz thing - with two different Artec pups). The only thing I did different on the Fojill was that I did not shield the pick guard too close to the pickup hole. I left about 15mm unshielded around the pickup hole. So, tonight I uninstalled the pickguard from the Firefly and removed the shielding tape directly around the pick up hole leaving about 15-20mm of non-shielded space around the pickup hole. And... guess what? No more hum or buzz when I touch the pickup. So, there you go...
I did however hear a cracking sound while playing in the neck position. Does periodic crackling sounds on only one pickup suggest something specific. I plan to check all the wires and possibly disconnect and solder it up again. Any other thoughts or ideas?

Do you have a multimeter? If you do check for continuity between the pole pieces on that neck pickup and the ground which is seemingly all over the place. I'm also assuming you didn't reverse the white and black wires on the next pick up and use the black one is ground and the white one as the positive on the selector switch. It's obviously a neck problem because when you go to the middle position you put the neck in play with the bridge. Also when you go to the bridge the problem gets bigger. Something's wrong with the ground between the pickup and the rest of the guitar. Does it still do that if the control plate is not mounted on the guitar.

Also, yes… it still does it if the control plate is off the guitar.

@2bikemikesguitartopics145 - Thanks, Mike. I double checked the wires, reseated them all, flipped the switch (see the video I posted in my other reply) around (and rewired). Still buzzing when touched... You think it could be a bad pickup?

Yes, or a broken ground on the pup. Send me close up photo's so I can get a good look

@2bikemikesguitartopics145 - sounds good… Sundays are busy mornings for me but I will get some closeup pics, etc. later this afternoon. Truly appreciate you taking the time to look all this over.

Are you running your guitar off of the Blackstar Fly or are you using a amp with a ground?

@gringogreen4719 - Thanks for the question. I run the Blackstar with a power chord. However, in this video I am actually using a Boss Katana amp in the “shop” - and keep in mind it is only the neck pickup - seems like if it was an amp ground it wouldn’t be picky about which pickup would “hum” or “buzz” - thanks for the question. Appreciate it.

Ok, yeah on electrical work you want an amp with a ground. I redid the electrical and pickups on an Epiphone SL Les Paul I had (it's set up for Nashville High Tuning) and I tested my work on a old Danelectro Honey Tone amp, when I plugged that guitar into a regular amp, boy were there issues!
I would make sure that you didn't switch the wire around, that would be my first guess. If that's not the case then there is a grounding issue to track down. Honestly it just takes time. Again use a grounded amp (I suspect my Black star Fly plugged in will have issues since the cord does not have a ground) so that you can conquer this gremlin.😉👍✨
