Ted Talks Guitars & Life
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 มี.ค. 2020
This channel is an exploration of my journey with guitars & life. Nothing I say should be taken as instructional or prescriptive for you, it is merely descriptive of my journey which I share in the hopes that it may be helpful as you navigate your guitar journey. As we all approach the guitar scene from various points of view and contexts, you won’t hear any attempts to hard sell you to do anything, buy anything, or think what I think. “You do you!” is the mantra of the channel.
If you should like a video, please let me know by liking the ones that you find helpful, informative, fun, entertaining, or shareable. I'd love to have you subscribe and hang out on the channel. There are some great folks out here and we are having a blast talking about guitars & life.
Wherever you are on your guitar journey, I pray it’s a long, smooth, safe, joy filled ride. Rock on with your bad selves! I’ll catch you down the road.

This channel explores my journey with budget guitars through a mix of various kinds of videos. You’ll find boring unboxing videos, out of the box tone samples, discussions of fit and finish, features, specifications, hardware, electronics, initial thoughts, reactions, guitar work, and lots of stories.
Along the way, I'll offer my take on questions like, “Should I buy a budget guitar? “Is upgrading a budget guitar worth it?” What is the cost difference between upgrading budget guitars with the price of brand name guitars? Do all budget guitars need upgrade? and more.
Wherever you are on your guitar journey, I hope it’s a good ride for you.
Rock on with your bad selves.

I love taking trashed guitars and fixing them. I agree with you. Learn how to set up your guitar yourself, but only if you find the tinkering rewarding. I just ordered a 84 explorer husk for a resto mod build. Thinking of going white black pickguard. What's your favorite color explorer?
Your 140 dollar guitar "shreds" until you play with other people and find out your guitar won't intonate and won't stay in tune. Then you find out the input is loose and the signal goes in and out, or the volume and tone knobs don't do anything. Oh and the pickups are microphonic. But sure, its better than a real gibson.
@@SpinGoldmusic - Thanks for the comment and hanging out on the channel. Although not everyone finds value in the budget mod journey (not that they have to do so on my account). I am totally digging it. I have learned so much along the way from some great folks on the Tubes. The satisfaction it brings me and the fun I have working on guitar projects is good for my soul. Rock on!
i buying great acoustic instruments , cutting boards with neck should by sold by pound of lumber or firewood

I have several guitars. The one I play most is my Squier Affinity Stratocaster. Sounds awesome, plays awesome, and it's light weight with a durable finish. Plus the frets and setup were excellent out of the box.

There is no Leo man !
@@barrygoodson4952 - Yep. It’s just a way of referring to the company in personified way and perhaps the owner (whose name is not Leo) not that he will ever see it. The bald shedder interviewed the actual owner and he tells the story of the company name, etc. Rock on!
I saw the first video. You had every right to voice your displeasure in that guitar. I just sent a Fojill back myself because it had a printed flame top and bent tone knob. I'm not keeping anything if I don't get it new in decent condition. I could fix the tome nob issue but they should have disclosed the top was a print. It was a present for my daughter but I'm going a different route now. I lost a little money returning it but so be it. I was thinking about Leo Jaymes myself but not after this video. There are guitars out there in the same money that don't have these issues. Keep telling it like it is bro !

working on a guitar by choice is always a great day. my favorite thing anymore. i just subscribed as well. i have a "channel" too and i like to do videos but im to shy or something and i never do it enough. thanks for sharing man. the moment where you alk about taking a moment and breathing and taking your time. i get excited sometimes when i get new pickups or a guitar and im in this hudge rush. one time i even noticed i was shaking a little. i must have anxiety or something and my high blood pressure doesnt mix well. i dont know but it was really cool to hear someone else goes thru there own version of what i go thru when i get excited. i did the same when building my subwoofer speaker boxes back in the day. i stayed up almost all night building one before lol.
Good video. I do me, and that's NOT modding cheap guitars. I love to work on guitars, and my thing is buying older (80's-90's) and vintage guitars (60'-70's). I overhaul/fix/recondition them, and eventually put them up for sale (if I HAVE to...). Anyways, I love your channel, and I'm watching another video because I love the straightforward way you talk about budget. So many channels go on and on about "Wow! This cheap guitar is amazing for the money!", without saying your getting a guitar that needs serious attention before it's a serious player. This video also brings common sense and reason to moddin' & flippin', and especially the market for something like a Squire, with market saturation. p.s.: all the guitars I've sold I have never lost money, and that's selling on Reverb with seller fees and shipping costs. Loving my journey! You do you, brah. Rock on.
@@armchairzen - Thanks again for hanging out on the channel and sharing more about your journey. Rock on!
A Prius will get you to work, to church and to the store. Would you prefer a Prius with cool paint, fender flares and tinted glass, or a stock BMW? I had fun modding the snot out of a Rogue Classic fretless bass. Paid $99. (MSRP $199.) Swapped pickups for name brands, sanded the fingerboard, sanded the neck, replaced and rewired the pots, added a Kluson high mass bridge and snazzy knobs. Mostly, I just wanted to try out a fretless bass, and this was cheap. After all that, here she sits. My musician friends and I say it looks hot, and it even plays fairly well. We frown and say it's worth about $400 now, but who would buy a Rogue bass for $400? I could strip the parts back off, I guess. End of the story: The Rogue satisfied my curiosity about fretless enough for me to jump on an opportunity to buy a US-made Carvin LB20, neck-through, solid Koa mahogany in a Carvin hardshell case. <drooling> (And maybe a Peavey Foundation FL, too). I don't "drive the Prius", but it looks cool sitting there. Perhaps it's just ostentatious and conspicuous consumerism, but I can't hear the mocking when I speed off with the Beemer.

I paid $280 for a Squire Tele in 1986 or 87, I wish it was as nice as what you got
@@yelims20 - Thanks for the comment, sharing a part of your journey, and hanging out on the channel. In the late 80s, $280 (US) was the 2024 equivalent of $775 (US). So that would be a very said tale indeed. I have another video where I talk about my first guitar and compare prices and all the things. You can find it on the channel it’s called something like “Can we talk about the budget guitar craze” - check it out. Rock on!

Hi Ted, I'm a long time bass playin' fool out in the San Francisco Bay area. I enjoy your channel and your progress! I refinished a Bass during the pandemic and learned all the things you are learning now by trial and error , I think you got this.If you were to do another one,you would bust it out in half the time! You never have to say thanks. That's why we support you and your channel. And i and some of your viewers know you were struggling with some steps. That's why I said the 1st time ever watching your channel that i said Its just a piece of wood! And a mistake is a lesson, you learn from. My dad taught me to shut up and hold the flashlight still i though he was being a jerk but i understood that if you can't see you can't focus on what you are doing. Im father taught me to weld, frame walls, plumbing, almost everything in the trade so i don't have to pay someone to do it for me and make a living on top of it to help people. You'll get it if not is ok you tried but at least you tried. Because im a boss i always get a little aggressive because i like for someone to say when i or the are done, I did that! Keep doing what works best for you and if i can speek for everyone here, We're here for the support. Just like the hurricane i got hit by your words help..have a great and wonderful trip ,vacation and journey To the Ted family 😊
Thanks, bro. I appreciate you and quoted you warmly. Rock on!
Cool video Ted! Rock on! 👍🎸
Thanks. I appreciate you being on the journey with me. Rock on!
Well said! What works for one may not work for someone else. Every pro bodybuilder looks amazing on stage, but their training regiments and nutrition requirements are totally unique to the individual. Any experienced woodworker can make furniture, but the approach can vary greatly from one to the other. There are basic steps and concepts to everything in life, but the variables are many and what works for one may not work for someone else. That guitar is orange so there, you did it, and you did it your way. Rock on.🤘
Thanks, bro. I appreciate the encouragement. It is orange. Really looking forward to the next phase when I return. Rock on!
@@TedTalksGuitars safe travels!
@@j-man9457 - Thanks, brother man.
Have a great trip, I have.
Thanks, man. I appreciate you being on the journey.
Hello, Mrs. Ted! Your husband is rocking it!
Ha! I thought that was a fun way to start the video.
Scotch again with another color then leave it like that till you come back. then you can flat sand with 800 up to 2000 then clear starts.
That was for ted.
@@2bikemikesguitartopics145 - Thanks, Mike.
The waviness or orange peel can be buffed out. You can put more clear coat to make it thicker, then like do a fine grit wet sand to get the orange peel off. Buff polish as the final step. I've done automotive paint before, pretty sure its the same as painting a guitar. I had used a spraygun instead of a spray can. Also the type of paint used make a difference. Some Guitars use a poly finish right? Which is thicker to spray right?
No it can't. Needs to be sanded out smooth. The 3 step buff, polish and waxed. You can't buff out orange peel you will burn the paint.
I guess the wood needs more prepwork before painting. I will be painting guitar bodies in the near future as well.
@@oneanother1 - Thanks for the comment and hanging out on the channel. Looks like my brother has already responded to your questions. I am clearly not the expert. Rock on!

Looks great! Your heading in the right direction! Rock on!👍🎸
Looks good!
Thanks, bro. It is coming along I think.
That rough spot in the middle will have a pick guard over it so no worries. I don't know of a painting process where they let the coats cure for 2 weeks between coats, so I would LIGHTLY sand the orange and spray another coat before the trip for sure... Stay safe!
Thanks, bro. I was thinking of hitting it again and letting it go until I return. Then should just be some lite sanding and moving to clear coat. I appreciate you, brother man. Rock on!
@@TedTalksGuitars yup that's what I'd do 😃 Have a good trip!
Sand it clear coat it. No scotch bright. 1000 2000 wet dry sand paper. No More paint your making it complicated, scotch bright your leaving scratches. I guess you don't trust me. Clear it before you leave so it's dry..sand it with same 1000 and 2000 when you get home..
@@BCG5150GUITARS - Thanks, bro. Not a matter of trust or not. I had some spots on the horns I had to add more color to even things out. Everybody has their way on doing things. I am doing my best to receive all the ideas and find my way. I appreciate you. Rock on!
The same computerized machines that carve, drill and route the wood are used in both cheap and expensive guitars. Pickup sound, paint and hardware type is a preference no matter what guitar. Cheaper guitars use more abundant and available wood to cut cost. The early Fenders were made of pine. Mexican, Chinese and Indonesian labor is a lot cheaper. Go figure. I personally don't have the money to own guitars with a vintage pedigree. I prefer to buy cheap ones too and set them up myself. I have plenty experience at it doing it in music stores for customers and friends as an employee. I've taken routers to 8,000 dollar Les Paul's to install a Floyd Rose vibrato system for customers. Fortunately none died on the operating table.
Thanks for the comment, sharing a part of your journey, and hanging out on the channel. Although not everyone finds value in the budget mod journey (not that they have to do so on my account). @@TedTalksGuitars 👍
no matter what you buy it needs tweaking, unless it is custom
@@2000SkyView - Indeed. That has been my experience as well through the years.
I have had 2 expensive Gibson Les Paul's years ago in the late 90s and they were great guitars but had to eventually sell both when times got hard and since then I have bought cheapo budget guitar strat and Les Paul knockoffs that I have enjoyed in the sub $200 dollar range, I have since found way more enjoyment in buying cheapo guitars people snub their nose at and modify them to bury their expensive "so called" premium guitars as I am a middle class cheap ass and don't need an expensive guitar brand to feel relevant as The more people laugh at whatever brand of cheap copy I buy I find the best amusement in taking my so called toy guitar and smoking their $1,000 or $2,000 dollar guitar with it as that is the best feeling to me and a lesson of don't judge a book by its cover, as all books have a cover and paper pages just like all guitars have a body, neck, tuners, bridge and pickups, and you can get quality parts for decent prices to upgrade any of thise with Fender or Gibson parts or something even better as some of the Chinese pickups they have now for pennies sound better than Fender or Gibson pickups for around $50 a set

@@TedTalksGuitars thank you as I just found your channel last night and subscribed and think every guitar player should do something customizable to their guitars, as that is just as fun as playing in my mind to make the guitar exactly as I want it not a grab off the assembly line guitar as it started
@@RichardBoling-tk4pj - Well, its great to have you as part of our little learning community talking about guitars & life. I am not the teacher of the group just a fellow traveler documenting my journeys in the hopes that they might encourage someone and perhaps they can learn from my mistakes. Rock on!
@@TedTalksGuitars happy to watch your content, as for not being a teacher and just documenting your adventures on modding just remember we are all amateurs until we do something a few times and then somehow we can get called professionals or experts with the only difference being that we have done the same type stuff numerous times, so keep modding those guitars and your channel will grow as you will eventually be the maestro of modding guitars, and I have always wanted to sand down a neck profile but haven't actually trusted myself on doing so yet, so i am curious to see how you do it and hope it turns out well as I think I am just overthinking on what could go wrong which has stopped me from trying that task, but with sandpaper I dont see how i could mess the neck up very easily, but I hope to see more videos of your content as you have a cool channel
@@RichardBoling-tk4pj - Thanks for hanging out and the encouragement. I agree we all start somewhere. Glad you are enjoying the channel. I have found in sanding the neck to cup the neck with sandpaper between the neck and palm. Work it until it takes shape. Caution: I suppose it is possible to sand too much. So keep in mind that my experience is just that and nothing more. Sand at your own risk. My best practice is… less is more. You can always sand a little bit more, but can’t recover from going too far. As for fear, I get it. Perhaps to count the cost you might think about what the neck cost you and what it would take to replace it if you damaged it beyond repair. Also, knowing the kind of wood it is would be helpful. If it is super thick now, you might have plenty of room. But you never know how the truss rod lays inside the wood. Also, make sure the neck is straight before measuring or feeling the neck. Relief can at times contribute to a feeling of thickness. That said, you might want to see if there are other channels offering specific videos as examples. The next time I do one I will put it on film. There may be some really awful examples in some of my earlier videos. Just keep in mind that wisdom is found in a multitude of counsel. Hope that helps. Rock on!
I can see your reflection . That's good right? Ask Howard about your bad spots. I would hit it with 400 wet sand to knock it down then proceed as planned. Your results may vary.
You know what, I noticed that as well. I do think its a good sign but what do I know (smile). Thanks, man. It has bee a grand adventure and I believe I am on a path to my own approach for the next time around (should there be a next time). It seems like eveyone has difference approaches and points of view. Finding my own way is the journey I suppose. Truly appreciate you being on the journey. Rock on!
Scotch brite is used to make scratches in the paint so you have a mechanical bond ready for your next coat. Guitar building is most definitely a journey. I had had to strip down my first few builds and my first official full build. Buy the right paint. Rustoleum and krylon are fine. As far as finish goes coat goes I would use a good 2k polyurethane. I find rustoleum doesn’t really cure you wind up finding printing on it from what ever you have rested it on. Cool stuff man.
Thanks for the comment and hanging out on the channel. I have done a little research and it appears that green scotch-brite is roughly 600 grit. Thank makes sense to me, although I think I over did it a bit. Appreciate the input. Rock on!
You're doing awesome, Teddy! Going to miss your journeys while you're away. Have a safe trip, maybe update us on what you're up to while away, for the Life part of your channel. 😊 Cheers, buddy!
Thanks, bro. I apprecaite the encouragement. I do have a couple of plans to film where there. We will see if that works out. Rock on!
Looking good... I don't think you have to sand that much buddy. Just a light pass between coats to get rid of any roughness and Rock on... 😃 You seriously need to put black hardware on that orange color hahaha! Did I mention I have a thing for black hardware lol!
Thanks, bro. I clearly don’t understand the virtue of not having shinny spots. I will take it easy nect time around. I did get as black pickguard if that counts (smile). I really am thinking about doing another on and making it Baltimore Orioles (orange and black with a bird local on the front (ha). But I am going to need some therapy fist after this grand adventure. Rock on!
It's so You have a flat surface to apply a finish.
Thanks for the comment and hanging out on the channel. I appreciate the input. Rock on!
Maybe You should try 0000 steel wool ???
Maybe so… Thanks!
@@TedTalksGuitarsthat's an option after the final coat of orange and next would be clear. And again the surface would need to be flat and matte
@@TedTalksGuitarsyou should have a good magnet on you if you use steel wool.

Hi Ted, those of us who have been through what you're doing could sit here and tell you how we did it, but the best way is to learn yourself through the trials and tribulations of it. Thanks, Coop. I appeciate you and the encouragement. I can’t wait to jam with him and the other grandkids. Its going to be wild. Rock on!
You want it MATTE so the paint has something to grip to! Got what I mean? If it to smooth the paint will not adhere well!
Thanks, man.
That's exactly what I told him
Yes it was good idea painting in the shed! Rock on! 👍🎸
Thanks!
Safe travels, my friend. May God keep you on this journey.
Thanks, Jim. I appreciate you.
Okay this is the middle part and the start of color. Take it outside and look at it in the sunlight using the reflection from all different angles to determine where you need to work it. The Scotch Brite will get the bugs off. I'm guessing by the setup you don't have a garage. You need to pay attention to the temperature requirements for the paint as well. There will be temperature constraints for using the paint listed on the cans. If you must spray outside do it at the warmest part of the day and make sure your paint has been kept inside where it's warmer so that when you spray it it mists better thereby providing a much nicer coverage. Once you do that, bring it inside right away so that the evening bugs are not attracted by the paint. Tomorrow apply 3 even a coats 10 minutes apart
@@2bikemikesguitartopics145 - Thanks, Mike. I have created a “little painting studio” in my shed. I appreciate all the input, direction, and encouragement. Rock on!

Hey, Coop. Good to hear from you. Thanks! It’s moving in the right direction, finally.
Hey it's orange! Nice. Way to not give up!❤
Thanks, bro. Its coming along… finally.
Get this… The Fesley “Instruction Manual” says that the body comes “sealed and prepared for various types of lacquer coating” - I think anyone who saw the pores after my first (or two) attempts at primer (and color) in some of the earliest videos could tell it was not "sealed and prepared” - not saying that all of them are like this one. Just noting that the one I have was far from “sealed and prepared.”
@@TedTalksGuitars yeah makes one wonder doesn't it!
@@j-man9457 - Indeed it does, my brother. Indeed it does.
@@j-man9457 - You know what, I went back and watched the earlier videos. It may be that it was sealed and I overly sanded preparing for primer. So, it could have been my fault. Live and learn - maybe (smile).
