Basically, Rachel and Finn threw the competition so that Sam could win, which he did. The reason why they wanted him to win was because Sam was new to the school and New Directions. They wanted to boost his ego and make him feel like he belonged to Glee Club. And that would also help them win Regionals and bring the group together because they need every voice in order to beat the other choirs. I hope this makes sense. Kurt looked sad because he was supposed to be Sam's duet partner, but had to let it go because singing a duet with another guy could potentially bring a target on Sam's back. Especially since this was back in 2010, and kids can be seriously cruel. So, Sam sang with Quinn and everyone else was taken, Kurt was by himself. Rachel reached out to Kurt at the end of the episode, realizing that Kurt felt lonely since he was the only openly gay kid at the school. And so they sang a duet, which wasn't part of the competition.
Mike and Tina's performance was adorable. Mike does end up with a fairly substantial part in West Side Story when they do the musical in season 3, so his singing does improve. If you get a chance, check out Kurt's "duet." It's amazing. He looked sad when Sam and Quinn were singing because he had asked Sam to sing with him and Finn convinced Kurt not to do it because Sam's reputation would suffer if he sang a duet with an openly gay man. Finn was a bit of a jerk sometimes.
Rachel and Kurt's duet happens after the competition just so she could sing a song that would be prefect for the two of them. Also, I believe the producers of the show was giving Lea these little moments to see songs by Barbra Streisand. This mash up of "Happy Days and "Get Happy" were done by two great singers Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland. You should react to them singing this together.
In regards on what you said about Finn in the first performance, Cory(Finn) actually wasn’t a trained or experienced singer when he got casted for glee, it’s actually impressive seeing the evolution of his voice in real life as well as in the series trough the seasons.. he received training in the show and each season he got better and better..🤷🏾♂️👍🏾
This was a fun episode to watch it was fun and funny Rachel wanted to throw the competition to bread sticks for the new kid at the time Sam and that’s why they were making faces because they knew Santana and Mercedes were really good that meant they would have to be terrible in order not to be chosen and let Sam and Quinn have the spotlight of the episode they thought that Sam was going to lose but he won that’s what they wanted for him to feel like he was apart of something personally I wanted Tina and Mike to win because mike doesn’t get that much attention plus he can actually sing irl really good that’s why I love the west side story episode because he sings much better in that and Brittany is upset with Santana because after they had there sexy time she asked Santana to be her partner for the competition and Santana said no this is before she comes out she thought if she dueted with Brittany ppl would figure her out so she went to Mercedes the other powerhouse thinking it’s a win win she doesn’t get found out and gets to win a competition so Brittany is acting cold towards her because she feels Santana doesn’t care for her the way she cares for Santana Artie is Brittany’s ex which is why she looked at him that way in the hallway she felt bad and so much other drama but Brittany is bi and Santana is lesbian so that’s why Brittany is with both guys and girls
No. It's not biased to prefer Santana's performances because she always delivers.. she knows the assignment. Same when she duets with Mercedes. Their duets are top notch. And everybody was fantastic but a show usually saves the best for last because people tend to forget the first one, but Sancedes started with the bang of a closing number. It's a general consensus they deserved to win. 🥇 I loved Mike and Tina's too.
Duets is one of my favorite episodes! It's too bad you missed Kurt's big performance, but I understand how youtube can be. Don't Go Breaking My Heart was a duet between Elton John and Kiki Dee. I still wish they had done more Elton John on the show. Finchel want a specific person to win, so they were feeling nervous because of how good Mercedes and Santana were. Small thing, but I love Kurt's little expression of impressed surprise when Tina and Mike start their performance, because it's sort of a Broadway deep cut.
Glee always pushed the envelope. It's first and foremost a comedy. Rachel and Finn wanted to do something offensive so new recruit, Sam would win. Sue says things just as offensive, if not more, in every episode. When taken out of context, a lot of things on Glee would have you saying WTF? That's why it was such a great, funny show.
The other really cool thing about Mike and Tina's duet is that they switched parts. Originally, it's the girl who "can't sing." So Mike is doing the female lines and Tina took the guy's lines.
They wanted Sam to win to encourage him to stay in glee. The winners were only supposed to get a meal at Breadsticks. Shue changed up the winner, getting a song in a competition later.
