  • Doug Perry, 83-years old, 10th-dan Shorin-ryu karate, retired United States Marine Corps Major (Purple heart and Meritorious Service medals).
Full interview on TH-cam and Bujin.tv
Doug Perry Sensei talks about his life in martial arts and the United States Marine Corps. He recently received his 10th dan in Shorin-ryu karate, and during his visit to Okinawa I met up with him and his son Colonel Jason Perry to chat about his extraordinary journey.
The interview was conducted by James Pankiewicz (Dojo Bar / Asato Dojo Okinawa) and filmed by Chris Willson (TRAVEL67.com)
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a crowd-funded TH-cam documentary series about the legendary martial arts teachers of Okinawa, Japan.
Will all the videos be on TH-cam?
Yes the videos will be available for free on TH-cam to anyone who wants to watch and learn from these great sensei. Hopefully individuals, dojos, or karate organizations will help sponsor or support the project to allow us to keep making videos.
    How can you help?
Give the video a thumbs up, comment, and subscribe to the channel.
Share the videos through social media with others who are interested in Okinawa, Japan, martial arts, history etc..
If you, your dojo, or your organization is interested in helping sponsor the series, I’d love to hear from you.
This documentary series would not be possible without the help of the international karate community. Thank you to all the people listed in the credits and below.

We are now shooting with two 4k cameras (FS5 and A7Sii). There are still many improvements to be made, and hopefully we'll keep progressing with each video. Ideally we'd get a proper boom mic and audio recorder to improve audio, cinema lenses, and we need greater data storage as we're working with and archiving the huge 4K Pro Res Raw files.

This man was extremely inspirational to me from 1992 until 1995. I was never a student under him but saw him at every Shorin Ryu event and made sure to seek him out for conversation. I was a teenager in those years, and the respect he gave was admirable from someone of his status.

It's so great to see him around! In my time of training I have met both and learning from them has been the most enjoyable time. They have so much to teach and they have a passion for it!

This is how it should be, if possible. Practicing a martial art is a lifelong journey. 🥋
