We knew Doug and Joy Perry through church when I was a rookie officer back in ‘92-‘96 in Hendersonville, NC. Great people and he was a mentor to me in many ways. Joy Perry was a wonderful soul and the driving force behind Doug’s success and he would readily admit that. She is greatly missed.
I have known Perry Sensei since 1981 when I was teaching the morning program under Hanshi Ridgely Abele. He will always be remembered as one of the. Few authentic Karate instructors in the United States. Truly a great man and great friend.
What a joy to hear that voice again! I trained with Hanshi Perry and Jason for several years in the late 80s when Jason was in high school. Many life lessons learned from that kind and powerful warrior...
I had the rare and distinct privilege of studying under this great man for nearly 5 years back in the early to late 80's in my hometown of Hendersonville, NC and it changed my life and personal character forever. He is truly extraordinary both inside and out. In his younger days, as both a fighter and practitioner, he was absolutely formidable (a MACHINE) but in his humility, he'll never admit it. I remember his son when he was still in junior high. It has been remarkable to see Jason follow in his Dad's footsteps in achieving greatness.
Sensei Perry was, after my parents, the most influential person of my childhood. I studied in his dojo as a young teenager and had the privilege of learning from him in church as well when he taught the young men's group I was part of. I didn't have the dedication or drive to follow him into Karate, but I absolutely learned a philosophy for life by listening to his words and experiencing his presence. I have yet to meet another man who so easily wears the mantle of leadership, respect, and influence.
Both of these men are outstanding instructors. I began training with Sensei Doug Perry at the age of nine and, 27 years later, I am still training as a fourth degree black belt (yondan). Whether you're already a student and want to expand on your knowledge of karate/kobudo or if you're new to the art, you'll have a blast training with them.
To all you 20, 30, 40, 50 year old 10th degree Masters! Doug Perry at 83 years old is the REAL DEAL! A "TRUE" 10th Degree MASTER! Like Doug Perry said, it takes years and years of study to perfect your art and you still will die before you get there! FORGET RANK! The only thing on your mind should be the perfection of your art! DOUG, your my HERO!
Got to train with sensei Perry many years ago while in highschool was such an amazing instructor and learned so much. Proud to say he helped inspire me to join the military and i continued my training. Thank you sensei for everything you have done and all the inspiration.
God Bless you, Doug Sensei! One of my cherished karate memories is when you and I worked the same ring as referees at the AAU Nationals. You are a great American and a National hero! Ossu!
I will always consider it a blessing to have been able to attend seminars where Perry Sensei was an instructor. He is an outstanding man, a credit to his art and the Corps.
So much love expressed for his family and karate in this interview. I have never met Perry Sensei but I have heard so many great stories about him from one of my Sensei. I hope I still am able to train and have the love and passion for karate that I do at 83. Because many things he said remind me of myself and my view of karate.
Great video! I grew up in Okinawa and witnessed many American servicemen taking Karate lessons in the dojo when I was a child in early 70s. I was really impressed by their dedication and utmost respect to the Sensei and Okinawan culture. Later I moved to states as a military brat to Cherry Point, NC Marine Corps Air Station in mid 70s. While there I took many different martial arts class from Marines who have learned arts in Okinawa. Including Shorin ryu from sensei Bill Hayes along with Uechi Ryu from GySgt and Shotokan from MGySgt Haas. These outstanding sensei molded my teenage mind to look up at them and I wanted to be just like them. At later in Shotokan training, my mother couldn't afford to pay for the lessons anymore so I told my sensei but he simply said don't worry about it and just continue with my training. After high school, I joined Marines and I'm still practicing Karate today because of these fine men inspired me to this journey. Semper Fi. I am forever grateful to Okinawa and Marines
I count it a great honor to know master Perry. Since 1985, we have shared time in numerous tournaments, seminars and cross training classes. His deep knowledge of Okinawan classical karate and showing a genuine interest in the students learning experience has shaped my perspective. He is a true warrior and a sincere gentleman.
This man is awesome I used to see and talk to him in the late 90's early 2000 at a winter camp in Virginia. Somebody else has to remember these winter camps.
Very sincere man and description of his experience. US military gave him opportunity .. karate sensei gave him understanding War and Budo give him purpose. Okinawa is truly the Garden of Eden
Please extend my warmest greetings to Doug Perry, I am also 80 years old and began my study of karate at Minot AFB in 1962 and then two years in Okinawa at Kadena AFB.
@@godncountry8323 If he isn't old, then what is he? If you compare him to other 83 year olds, then he is in great shape. Thats all you can do. Father time is brutal in terms of physical martial combat.
OUTSTANDING video, I recall meeting Sensei Perry many years ago as a green belt. I t was great to see him in this presentation, and I look forward to meeting him again soon!
What a special Man & Sensi......I wish we all had Hearts such as this Great Man....what a Great Son you ve made...two beautiful Men...How lucky you are to have one another....I learned a few things from simply watching this video....I can only imagine what one could learn spending some quality time with this Teacher....Thank you for this....
Perry sensei. I have known of you over the years and we have had a few discussions. You were rather Gruff at the time. But watching this 30 minutes I have learned so much about you and your spirit. It's an honor to know you and you have really inspired me. I will be talking to Mr. Williams. Thank you so much. Domo arigato
I can't wait till I can find a few other like-minded people to train with. At one point I had about 6 or 7 close friends that we got together all the time to spare , grapple , watch videos of different masters and different sport systems. It pretty much became mixed Martial arts. I got so much out of that. I am at a point now where I need that again
Was in the USAF at Kadena AFB in 1964-1966. Trained with Sensei Fusei Kise, one night with Master Hohan Soken in Shorin ryu and in Koza Uechi Ryu withSensei Seio Sinjo, We now do a kata from Shorin ryu and two katas of Uechi ryu and Aikido. Started at Minot AFB with Uechi ryu. This has been my journey.
I notice a lot of Marines from the past have become high level Black Belts in Traditional Okinawan Karate. Always sharpening the mind and body into an efficient killing Machine when it is required. Semper Fi Marine!
