    really beautiful light display. they really thought this one out. and especially clever what they did with the timing on the leds, they don't have time to get out of phase. and yes; I want to win.

    Great wee board albeit the heart shape is a bit naff. I suppose the LEDs could be mounted elsewhere as you see fit as the sequences are quite entertaining! I want to win!

  • @frac
    @frac 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The LEDs aren't being controlled. They're just not random. Each time you power on one of those LEDs they restart the same sequence at the beginning. In groups, they'll remain synchronized for quite some time (30+ seconds) before the manufacturing differences cause them to drift apart. Since they're being turned on in a close sequence and left on for only a few seconds at most, the patterns emerge from the LEDs design.

    but I bought the exact same kit from aliexpress with several spares also but mine didn't flash like yours did; I replaced the crystal but same. I either get a slow fade up and down with the crystal in place or random light flash with the crystal bridged. I wonder if mine is programmed differently?

    This is actually a very nice kit. I've completed about 5 of these so far. If you install it in a thick Picture Frame (to give it more depth) with a White translucent plastic behind the glass, it makes a nice gift. Just leave out the Switch/dc-plug and attach a usb-cable to power it. They also work really well if powered from 2 AA batteries.

    how many pins are being used - i.e. what's the resistor to LED ratio? maybe its a single pin driving a single LED, although it looks like maybe 2 LED's per pin?

    get a cheap USB logic analyser (well under a fiver for an 8 channel on on aliexpress) and download pulseview from the sigrok site (fully open source) and see if any signals are there. it recognises a lot of LED control pulses. I am going to do it on that laser keyfob thing you sent to see if any signal or code is being pulsed.
    I have already won, so will let someone else win this.

    I want to get into building these type of kits, but I am a total novice. How do you work out where stuff goes, if you don't get a diagram? How did you know to put that little piece of wire in between those two LEDs? I bought a clock kit from ebay. No instructions and no help from the seller. And I've searched everywhere but no luck finding anything.....
    Should I give up and find a different hobby? Great video's I've subscribed

    The way the LEDs can be set to certain colours in the patterns does make them look like they are some sort of 2 pin controllable LED - and it also immediately reminded of Julian's Video. I'm hoping these type of LED start flooding the Chinese eBay sellers soon.

    +1 to stealth banana - this cheapy aliexpress logic analyzers work well - just be mindful they are not protected so if you hit voltages much higher than 5v you can release the magic smoke... an oscilloscope would be possibly best to do an initial probe - do you own one? If not maybe you could build one of the cheap kit 138 dsos which are about US16.
    Was good to see you in the results video - i think that kind of vid lends itself to the talking head approach

    my microcontroller isnt working properly on mine. it just lights up the top half of the LEDs solid and the very top 2 flickers. if i place the micro controller on without pressing it in, almost all LEDs come on and try to work but just flicker and stay solid

    • @noinformationhere4258

    • @hiyall15
      @hiyall15 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i bought a different micro-controller and still same problem. i think it is a seat problem with the micro controllers seat. im going to try electrical grease to help make solid contacts

    • @noinformationhere4258
      @noinformationhere4258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi yall Did you get it to work? I bought another kit from aliexpress and it works fine, just like in the video. Thinking of switching the ic from the faulty one to the working one to see where the problem is.

    • @hiyall15
      @hiyall15 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i got a new and different microcontroller and it did not work still. it would try to work when i place it on gently still. i believe the problem lies with the controller bed. i removed this and going to put the capacitor and other stuff on the back of the board and then solder the micro-controller straight into the board itself. i been lazy and havent gotten to it. just only removed the micro-controller slot so far. i guess ill go ahead and work on it now and see how it goes

    I got the same kit on ebay (cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=292042887819&view=all&tid=1424995438019), or at least it looks like the same kit, and the pics show what appear to be the same sequence of flashes and colour changing LEDs, but I'm another one who seems to have the variant where the lights fade up and fade down, rinse, repeat. Somewhat boring and a waste of the colour changing LEDS as they don't do their sequence, just 'sparkle' a wee bit (and they are the colour changing LEDS - I checked). I've looked over my soldering carefully and repositioned the microcontroller several times and used different power sources, but still fade up, fade down. Does anyone know if it's a dud microcontroller or just differently programmed, or some other problem?

      Kris Cochrane Yes, I have.

    • @jennyhart406
      @jennyhart406 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I've narrowed it down to the two 22pF capacitors and/or the 12MHz crystal oscillator. My (very new to me; was using a very basic meter until recently) multimeter refuses to measure the capacitors properly (fine with the electrolytic capacitor; won't measure anything sensible with any ceramic capacitors - I pulled some out of another kit and had the same problem measuring those, built the kit and they're fine, so probably user error measuring those). Probed the whole circuit and finally decided the only thing not tested was the crystal. So I looked up how to measure frequency, powered on the circuit and tried testing the crystal - wildly fluctuating readings (not getting close to 12MHz) and depending on when in the fade in/fade out cycle I probe it, the LEDs either stay on steady and start the colour change sequence, or go off completely. When I've managed the steady on, the colour changes are quite nice. Given what I paid for it, I'm probably better off entering the eBay lucky dip with buying another kit than trying to source one or two itty bitty replacement parts...

    • @schluderjupp
      @schluderjupp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jenny Hart I've had the same problem with a number ok kits from different sellers on eBay. I've found that the problem is falsely programmed chips that are delivered with the kits. I have been able to correctly program the chips with a programmer I got on eBay. Search for article number 191796916274 on eBay. It costs around 35€. I'll keep you updated on how to fix the kits.

      The code can be downloaded from this site: goughlui.com/2016/11/07/project-at89s52-based-multi-coloured-led-heart-kit/
      a very interesting article about this kit.
      You can find a download link about 1/3 down the page.
      I tested it with one of my kits and it works fine.
