In the late 60's Dad and I were picking corn on Thanksgiving Day with a 2 row Oliver Picker Sheller pulled by a Oliver Super 88. It was snowing and around 28 deg or so. This was the latest in the year we ever picked corn. In those days if there was lodged corn we picked the ears by hand and tossed them into a wagon to get shelled later. Makes me feel really old. Haaaa. We didn't farm nearly as much land as this operation. I am trying to wrap my head around 12 row pickers. So much fun to watch the Larson farms. Farmers of today have HUGE skill sets to operate farms like this. I don't think people in general really understand how smart farmers really are.

Hello to the combiner driver at Larson Farms!
Be proud of yourself! Best thing was that you were able to pull through!
Nicely equipped John Deere. I run three Ford! In Northern Norway we do f.x. potatoes, milk, fishing, sheep and reindeer. On my little farm on the Prarie I grow potatoes and strawberries and pick cloudberries in my forest.
On yhe other hand I am used to combining because my relatives Donald Olson (Skip Olson) in Parshall N.D. have a nice farm with neigbors Hedbergs and Belladeau. I had some good times on those farms in Parshall driving those combiners.
Love watching the work being done!

You have to adjust the height of reel for the sweet spot so it doesn't do that you only want it to help the corn in not drag it in

Pounding lock washers on the auger helps! I have combined mile long rows one way for days on end! Pieces of hose on the ends of the reel also helps along with pvc pipes cut to fit between the reel tines. I have had to get out and puke several times from getting cross eyed and dizzy. Try the old grain table trick, wrap the rotating shaft with small diameter pieces of drain tile so that the stalks don’t wrap. It’s what we did to keep wheat from wrapping around the reel on our grain table.

Liked, good video. The clutches on the augur being that worn was likely giving you more grief than you realized. And trying to pick-up cornstalks when it's damp is almost impossible with any corn reel I know of.

i think i see a way to fix that chain drive from loosening up on you like that . take you some all thread and weld you some bracing to push and or pull from and use the all thread to better hold tight and also use all thread to adjust chain along with the 4 bolts that are there

  • @missouribob7850

Thanks for the video. For those of us who are not farmers, but like to watch farm videos, how about explaining how the equipment works. Or should work as the case may be. I did look up the corn reel. According to the manufacturer it works great with no problems. :)
For that loose chain you had to adjust, I couldn't believe there was not a gear to take up the slack. That would be much easier than moving the entire assembly.

  • @firstname6208
    @firstname6208 4 ปีที่แล้ว

a couple of ideas, use as you will. how about a wedge kit for the header- flatten the gathering chains a bit, also spray pam or similar on the corn snouts to assist in the corn stalks and mud sliding along and not sticking to the plastic. probably the reason that gathering chain popped off- it was so low it hit something- or maybe that header has seen better days. I watched so many harvest videos this year I cant recall if you got a new header with that new combine. hey at least its finally done. now do the math to see if you can do it all over next year.

Recommendation if you ever need to use your corn reel again. Put a new chain on the corn reel and then once the chain is tight drill a hole through one the large sprocket side of the bracket and put a bolt in it to prevent it from sliding too far forward but still able to adjust rearwards

You'll remember this harvest though not necessarily for the right reasons. The additional reel looks cheap and flimsy, but I suppose it helped. I suspect there will be extensive structural changes to strengthen it over the winter? Great video, roll on 2020!

2 things on the corn reel I would fix if I was the company, I think I would put pvc pipe between the arms like a pto shaft has to keep the stalks from wrapping around it, the other is the chain make it where the mount doesn't slide or use gear to gear stuff instead of a chain and put a guard on it.
Now I want to ask a question When I was a kid in Illinois, we lived next to a corn field, When the corn was green my Uncle would have us go out an pick a few ears for grilling, He always told us not to get caught, Do Farmers get mad when people just pick a few ears? and yes it was field corn
Thank you for the content, and showing us what all goes into modern farming. and As Americans I don't think we do enough to help the Farmers same with teachers and Military people. But I do think we should thank you more for what you do.
