    Nothing wrong with several people learning how to operate different pieces of machinery. Glad you got that job done before bad weather sets in. We've been holding on hoping the moisture will go down before we start shelling corn. Need to get rolling soon before snow season sets in. Corn moisture levels seems to be a common issue in our part of Ohio.

    One thing I learned working on farms in Kentucky and Indiana, the fuel companies sell the worst fuel to the farmers - full of gunk. Then they keep the best fuel for themselves. Check a filter or in your fuel tank for gunk.

    Great video of ear corn harvest. Was surprised you did not have some kind of protection at PTO shaft between elevator and super m. I worked Volunteer rural ambulance for 30 yrs. Once your involved a a pto accident you never forget it. Last one our service handled,, it was determined the farmer got caught in shaft from raveling near wrist area of his jacket. Incident removed arm at the shoulder and his body made many revolutions around pto shaft. It only takes a few minutes to drive a couple steel posts and cut a piece of cattle panel to block accidentally slipping or falling into live pto shaft.

    • @MorganOtt-ne1qj
      @MorganOtt-ne1qj 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have used silage wagons to store excess ear corn after the cribs were full. If the moisture is below 18%, almost anything will work, especially if you feed it fairly fast out of non "crib" storage. Airflow is the key to keeping above that. Ear corn is great feed!

    • @CuriousEarthMan

      @@CuriousEarthMan I'm not sure if you can find new wire type cribs anymore. Last Company I saw that made them was Behlen, but I don't know if they offer cribs now. IF you can find any, figure around 50¢ per bushel, or 1/3 the per bushel price of a regular grain bin. If you are looking to buy one, Retirement Auctions are probably best place to look.

    • @CuriousEarthMan
      @CuriousEarthMan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MorganOtt-ne1qj Thanks for the information, it's very helpful! I was thinking what the Gierok's would have to spend, to more than cover what seems to be their ear-corn storage needs ( plus the pad/foundation of course) That price is good info for me to have too, btw.

      @@CuriousEarthManthere are plenty of them sitting empty around the countryside. I bet people would give them away. Just be a matter of taking it down. I've moved two. We unbolted the top and lifted it off with a telehandler using a chain with of all things a corn picker rim and tire through the center. Next we unbolted one side and rolled them up and put them on a trailer. Two or three people makes a big difference vs doing it by yourself.

      Some combines can be equipped with cob savers, but good luck finding someone who is running one and willing to work with you. Anyone who is picking ear corn is feeding the whole ear because it is great in a feed mix. And most people who combine shell corn are always in a rush to get the crop in.
