Kanye sampled another bit of the song. The part you're trying to mimic with the shakers? It's that part. The sample comes up on 0:12 in the original song.
Really really dig your videos man. They can really help someone appreciate the songs you break down even more. You ever thought about breaking down some Neptunes production? That'd be tight to see! Keep doing what you're doing!
Listen to twista he used alot of claps, snappy trackmaster type snares/clap mixtures. Blueprint 2 has some solid production. Jay Popping tags, twista overnight celebrity, alicia keys you dont know my name.
You should breakdown a Weeknd song. Maybe The Fall prod. Clams Casino? Kiss Land prod. Silky Johnson? House Of Balloons/Glass Table Girls prod. Illangelo & Doc McKinney. His earlier mixtape stuff had some crazy beats.
When you're remaking a beat, where do you find all the exact elements used? For example the drums, is there a somewhere you find the information on which drums were used, or do you cut out and sample each drum by hand? For the bass as well as other instruments i suppose you program them by ear, or am i wrong? :)
i can prolly answer this. sometimes the drums are just resampled from the original when u can get em in isolation, probably gonna have to eq stuff if its muddy. but a lot of the drums are also available in packs where people have already eq’d stuff out and isolated them into one hits or sometimes stems get passed around so u have the og work. kanye uses a lot of drums from (whether intentional or by design) the all the breaks drum pack ive noticed and just chops and pitches them. the bass lines really depend though, sometimes they just eq out all the high end and reuse the bassline and chop it. it really depends on the song, but most of the times they just build the bass line on top.
Hey Sandurz, love the vids - quick question: Are the drums programmed in the real version, or played on pads (either with individual sounds on pads or a chopped break)?
+Sin Civilization hmm I think you're making a distinction that doesn't need to be made. To me, programmed drums are individual drum sounds played back by the sequencer, whether those were recorded by playing pads or by clicking in a DAW or whatever. In this case, I'm certain they were recorded by the pads and then quantized so they all lay perfectly on the beat. Hope that makes sense.
+Sandurz Right - I was mainly going after how the feel of the drums was accomplished - by using a step sequencer or by pads and then using quantization to keep the feel alive by having varied velocity. I appreciate the response - keep up the good work.
Hey Sandurz, your samples always sound super clean. Do you usually use cdq's? also do you ever sample vinyl? And if so do you use some sort of clean up process? (removing static, back round hum, pops etc)
+Donis Almanzar yeah I usually source FLAC whenever possible (which sometimes are vinyl rips) a few tracks I'll go off the vinyl if I have it or if I can't find good enough online. Whenever I do sample off vinyl I don't do any cleanup usually. If it's too nasty to use I just don't use it.
Why comment: "Do THIS song!" or "Do THAT song!".......clearly the point of these breakdowns are for you to see how these are constructed and reconstructed....not for you to see if he can recreate a random favorite song of yours. #ComeOnYall
