People, this is a critical review... Meaning yes I focus on things I think should be better. It's ok for you not to agree with me, but please understand that was the intent was to rail on something that is fundamental that I believe is an oversight and for the money that you pay, it's the worst possible connection you can get. I work in professional data-center environments, and to see 10Gb show up in the prosumer market is great, but to see short comings that really should push it down to "consumer" level rather than "prosumer" level is something I'm going to point out. Skip to later in the video if you don't want to hear about the power cable please :) thanks!
hey Al! luckily right out of the box it's configuration is pretty solid. The QoS that's on the router is pretty cool. It's not a manual config, but an automatic algorithm/settings that are updated online, you take a speed test and it configures your QoS for you. I have run with it both on and off, and I *think* it runs better with it on? but we're talking a minimal difference at best, and very well could be my imagination. The rest would really be personal configuration; I don't have kids or any reason to use parental controls or anything like that. No use for port forwarding at the moment or any of the other configurable, VPN for me is hosted through another device i have, so - i really use this for a router! :-p
I'm not saying it's not a great router - but for $500 I expected more from ALL components. Including the thing that turns it on (the power connector). I'm in professional Audio/Video/Lighting and IT. This is quite subpar to what you see even for small business... to each their own though. I'm happy you enjoy yours! I enjoy mine plenty!
Kelvin Holland hey thanks for the question! And I wouldn't call it backwards compatible, but it's own entity rather. This router has 3 frequency bands available, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 60GHz. The AD band utilizes the 60GHz frequencies where AC utilizes the 5GHz frequencies- the short answer to your question is yes both protocols can and do run well at the same time to this router!
I bought one of these on amazon brand new. I can not access the wifi at all. I can only access the router login configuration when on wired connection when the r9000 is connected to my modem. If i disconnect from my modem router log in no longer works via wired connection. Wifi doesnt work at all I was refunded on amazon and they told me to keep the r9000 so if i could get it fixed i would have a free router
Ok, thank you for responding, but just to be clear, you can connect an AC client to the 60hz AD band? I keep getting different answers. I'm debating between this router and the Asus ac5300 Rog Rapture.
Kelvin Holland- so the AC protocol uses the frequencies of 2.4 - 5.9Ghz, not up to 60GHz. The 60GHz band is only used for the AD protocol at this time. The router has all three frequency bands available and can use all three simultaneously. I've seen no issues in routing or connectivity having multiple devices connected to any/all 3 bands at the same.
short answer is it DOES need a modem if you are using DSL or Cable from your ISP. Now it is potentially possible for a Fiber connection to not need it, but you'd have to ask your Internet service provider... This unit also allows you to utilize the 10Gbit port as the WAN port (going to your ISP) which is unique and kinda defeats the purpose as Gigabit is about the fastest internet in the USA... possibly it's useful somewhere in Korea? or asia somewhere
This device is only a router/Firewall, meaning it does not serve as a direct connection like a Modem, This device can accept IP addresses directly from a Service provider if your service provider is able to provide one directly (via fiber or something like that) - but this device does not meter connectivity nor gain you internet access (it will tell you how much you have used however in it's logs)
i'm still quite happy with it, it's plenty powerful, obviously I still don't have any 60Ghz devices that could utilize the full wireless AD bandwidth, but all of my other devices were upgraded to their full spec (I had some AC devices that were not operating optimally before on my old N router). The plex server is decent but mildly limiting. The software plex has written for this device seems old? but maybe it is just in the way it is presented through the web interface. I ended up Disabling it on the router and setting up a mac mini for my plex usage instead. It gives me more access to change/move/delete files that way. as i've mentioned in other comments, I haven't used any of the BitTorrenting functionality, although it is present, I just don't have a need for it.
Temi Agbaje that will depend on your internet service provider. Mine does require a modem, I simply asked them to put it into its bridge mode so my router acts as the router, and their modem/router is just a bridge or pass through
Kyle next time you create a video make sure to wear not only clean socks but ones without a hole underneath them that can be seen in beginning of the video. lol
I really am - It is an extremely powerful wifi router and I've had a lot of success with it. I should be getting my new NAS soon and will be testing out the 10Gbit port on it. I used the Plex server functionality and it has worked pretty well. I wanted to get into the DVR beta with Plex, however the router was not compliant with Plex's beta software (they didn't write the beta for this specific piece of hardware) so I had to resort to using a different computer to host the Plex server. I'm not super thrilled with the mounting points for shared drives (which won't matter following my setup of the NAS) I also didn't use a clean drive so that could have been part of it, but something happened with one of my externals (backups elsewhere) that caused it to lose the partition map, effectively making the data on the drive lost. Yes there are ways to get it back, but it wasn't necessary for me. I think if you're hooking up a clean drive to it and working from that, you'd probably find plenty of success or a printer/other compatible hardware.
Hey Kyle, I'm looking into buying a NAS for this router as well, I'm thinking about editing videos directly on NAS (today I use a thunderbolt SSD, works pretty well, but not too much space), and it would be good to have something connected to 10Gbit port. Just out of curiosity, which NAS you got?
Sorry for posting another one, but since you got the router, are you able to manage/download torrents with it? I never own a netgear, I saw that there was a Netgear Downloader, but it's not too clear about downloading/managing/uploading to torrent trackers.
Issues I have with this video: 1. Talking about the power plug and supply for 3 minutes. 2. Simply just looking at the router starting up for 1 minute. 3. Showing very little understanding of how it operates. 4. I could go on, but... The rest of the video was just a mess. I came here looking for a review but instead I found what looks like a tech neophyte fumbling about. I find it hard to believe that this person is working in a "professional data-center" - especially the professional part.
While I appreciate your feedback, i intended to spend much more time on this router doing full setup and initialization, however at the time almost a year ago, work got in the way deploying multiple SAN solutions and reworking an AD server, as well as setting up a few raid arrays for a small editing group, after I had set this up, I realized the netgear software was very straightforward, simple to use, albeit, prosumer level at best- and that a further video on the subject wasn’t worth my time. But hey, thanks for your contribution
I am so far really disappointed. I have a USB hard drive plugged in and bought this to use as a Plex Server. The hard drive shows connected, but the open plex button is grayed out. I have tried several troubleshooting tips with no luck. Does anyone know what the issue is, can this not handle a 8 terabyte hard drive? I know you can't run it off a NAS server which was already disappointing, so I bought an external hard drive.
Hey Cameron - what NAS server do you have? Plex writes their server software for a few different NAS platforms. If you own one of those, I would honestly choose to use the NAS over the Router any day of the week. I would call this a VERY entry level plex server at best; My entire point for selecting this Router was for the wireless power and the 10GBit port (for my NAS server) which would then Host my Plex server.
Hi Kyle, I have a Synology DS412+. It's always worked great, but just recently I think one of the hard drives went bad and luckily I was able to get all my data to the external hard drive. I need to buy a replacement drive for it and get it fixed. Do you know if running that NAS server aggregated would make Plex better? Something to think about, I haven't been that happy with this new router. Yesterday it kept dropping connection or something when I could go to web pages it would temporarily stop, it's hard wired as well, so I don't know what's going on with that issue.
Hey Cameron - I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "aggregated" in your context. I would definitely recommend getting your NAS back up to speed. If I'm doing it, I would want to make a single large volume out of the 4 drives so you get full protection and full speed of the NAS. I'd get 4x 4TB drives to give you 12TB of space on your NAS ([MaxDrives - 1] * capacity/drive = Total available Space (ish)) According to Plex, your NAS can handle SD streams just fine, but what most people don't realize is the amount of Data that HD streams take and how much processing power it takes to convert them to SD for streaming purposes. Here are their links for that... docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/edit#gid=314388488 forums.plex.tv/discussion/191000/faqs-read-this-first#latest
Complaining for inserting the power to router.... I got this and it's just sitting there I don't play with it up and down..you talk about this for like a minute I'm leaving now.
what is the internet connection supposed to be (as advertised from your provider)? and if you bypass the router and plug straight into the modem, what do you get then? (you will probably have to restart the modem when doing this) ... If you are still getting the 3.45 and 0.93, or remotely close, and your advertised is different, i'd contact your internet service provider.
John - I do like it. I really can't wait to do a follow up video with my NAS testing the 10Gb port. But I was definitely quite upset that a company puts this low of quality connector on their flagship product for the prosumer market. I'd much rather have seen an IEC 320 connector ( C13/14 considered professional) OR at the very least the IEC C5 connector, given that space is a premium, this is really what I hoped for. The unit seems plenty big to house the transformer inside. And if I were looking to buy it, especially if i were on a traveling tour/set up/tear down group that goes to conferences and such and was considering this router as a high quality choice that included 10Gbit connectivity; It just wouldn't last, and I think people need to know that. Have a great day!

Are you using QR Reader for iPad by TapMedia LTD?
Al Ledwidge yes that is correct
Great review bro, I enjoyed listening to your points during the majority of the video.
Would you mind doing a video on your recommendation on the best setting/s for maximum performance?
hey Al! luckily right out of the box it's configuration is pretty solid. The QoS that's on the router is pretty cool. Solid critiques Kyle, I like your style man. Keep it up dude.
Thank you for your Video. Do you know if the Netgear Nighthawk x10 R9000 work with a Motorola MT8733 Modem/Router combo? thanks for your reply!
seriously this thing is sick the plug issue he talked about for way to long is not a issue for me this router kicks ass bottom line.
I'm not saying it's not a great router - but for $500 I expected more from ALL components. Including the thing that turns it on (the power connector). I'm in professional Audio/Video/Lighting and IT. Well it might not have gaming options but I guess this is the ultimate plug and play system which has amazing performance vs any roughter
Is the AD band backwards compatibility with AC devices, or can you only us the 2 bands for now?
Kelvin Holland hey thanks for the question! And I wouldn't call it backwards compatible, but it's own entity rather. This router has 3 frequency bands available, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 60GHz. Does it have unlimited Internet or do u still have to pay a month like regular WiFi ?
This device is only a router/Firewall, meaning it does not serve as a direct connection like a Modem, This device can accept IP addresses directly from a Service provider if your service provider is able to provide one directly (via fiber or something like that) - but this device does not meter connectivity nor gain you internet access (it will tell you how much you have used however in it's logs)

yes
You talked about the looseness of the AC adapter for over 3 min... ... ... ... thumbs down

noting in there about setting this up, this was time i'll never get back, very dissappointed
TERRIBLE PRODUCT....ROUTER
