I looked at this router recently and found out that the limitations of 60GHz band is that supported devices have to be within sight of this router; the AD band cannot penetrate walls. If you're in a place outside of the room where the this router is you're limited to wireless AC and N functionality only. I can't see this as a solution for a large home with many devices connected to it at various distances. Perhaps this router was meant for those looking for the ultimate speed in a specific room in a house or apartment and not prioritizing the other areas of the home. For everyone else, netgear orbi might be a better solution. :)
Question. My NAS has a 10Gbit card added in, but it's a RJ45 port. I was thinking to do the link aggregation to the NAS, and then connect the 10Gbit port to my PC. My PC is using a Thunderbolt 3 to Ethernet adapter. So, again RJ45. What would be the most cost effective way to get everything working? What do I need exactly? I could replace the adapter, but that would run > $160 on top of a new router. Thank you.
Nice piece of hardware, but it's prohibitively expensive here in the UK - Netgear site simply says 'coming soon', yet some retailers are selling through Amazon UK for prices in excess of £550. I've only just started swapping out some of my old CAT5 cables around the house!
Shawn Paul Gustafson buddy this X10 is the empire striking back. The force hahaha But ... how can we add VoIP and hand held phones for VoIP calls independent
How do you plan to use the Orbi and X10 together? Orbi as an access point? If you didn't have the Orbi, would the X10 have improved your range performance issues you had with the X6?
Thanks for watching! I'm thinking of using the X10 in bridge mode and then connecting the Orbi via Ethernet cable for it's wifi. The X10 would have improved the range of the X6 to a certain extent, but it would still run into the same limitations I discuss in my Orbi review. I bet if I could put the X10 in the middle of the house it would cover the entire house, but I can't. Either way, the Mesh approach is the best way to cover a large area without signal degradation (short of actually wiring access points). I don't think I would have been happy with just the X10 for my specific application because what I was lacking was coverage.
Enjoyed the review thanks for not reading the box to me I can do that myself. First time I've seen your reviews and I like the friendlier delivery rather than a typical tech review full of specs but short on personal review.
Have you looked at all the reviews for it. At that price you would think it should be perfect except that if you look it up on several major sellers, you will see that nearly a 1/5 of the buyers are not all that happy with it. The nighthawk pro has a better review record and yet over 1 in 10 are dissatisfied with it. Modern day routers seem to be hit and miss with many customers reporting a lot of disconnection or drop in speed. Since they are more then double the cost you would have thought that they would improved them. But in fact older routers were more reliable, but did not have as great of looks or the more modern ease of use software (that may be a lot of the problem). The x4s was there best router in the last few yearrs, way more reliable then the x6, x8 or x10.
Hi Richard, you bring up some super solid points. I think it's critical for companies to keep user experience and performance in mind rather than just race for specs. This isn't only true when it comes to networking devices. You can see it in almost every tech niche. It stems from users buying products based on specs alone (which I never recommend). What do you think?
It's a great wifi router but what hardware attachment can do my VoIP plan calls and my hand held phones not my mobile phones. Like Panasonic hand held cordless home phones ???
Good day to you,,,, I see that vid was done in 2017,, but wondering still what router to get,, comparing the X10 to ASUS AC3100 RT-AC88U,, Thank you for your time,, God Bless
I agree straight up upgrade firmware but as the 3 or 5 years go by sometimes firmware updates can cause issues that was better without updating in long term years.
Thanks for watching! That's always a good question. First you should look at what kind of speed you are getting now when wired to your current router, and then test throughout the house. If you get plenty of speed in, but the coverage in insufficient, you should upgrade your router. If you're not even happy with the speed wired to the router, you should first upgrade your speed.
I only bought this router for the SFP+ port. Only home router with one as of 12/1/2018, else I would have gotten a TP-link ad7200. You mentioned 2 industry first for this router. There's actually 3 - built in plex. For the guy who said he was disappointed that the 60ghz can't penetrate walls, that's limitation of physics, not the router and buying an Orbi isn't going to fix it. So, how do you like the x10 so far since you've owned it fo more than a year? Thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching. I no longer use this router and have had my Orbi connected into my AT&T router (I also now have fiber). Essentially, since the Orbi covered this whole house and most of the yard with no problem, I'm just using it for wi-fi. Thanks for the note about Plex being a first!
Sorry I missed this comment. I just wasn't using any of the features it offered. The Orbi started offering a second, guest network and I wasn't using Plex. I wasn't using the SFP+ port or the aggregate ports. Just didn't make sense to keep it.
Does Netgear have a way to add an access point to this? Like a mesh network? I want the router but given the size and build of my home it isn't practical and I may have dead wifi spots.
Hi Angelo, thanks for watching. Sure, you can use the Orbi (th-cam.com/video/Q_GCTwf6Dgw/w-d-xo.html) and just have the X10 in bridge mode. That way you can take advantage of the router's features and get the wifi to broadcast via the Orbi. Let me know if you have any questions.
Tech Gear Talk thank you. So I would still benefit from the processing power of the nighthawk? Not even for Plex but for data routing? Or would the Orbi slow some of the routing and processing down because it is a bottleneck?
The orbi doesn't support 802.11ad so technically speaking you would not be taking advantage of that feature. You'll have to ask yourself if you have devices that utilize that technology and also be aware of the range limitations that technology has. I actually use it for the aggregate port which connect to my NAS.
you can purchase a NETGEAR EX8000 wifi range extender for you to extend the wireless network and act the same as the orbi wifi mesh system. R9000+EX8000
Hi, great video and sorry if this is a silly question but I'm looking for a new router but unsure whether to get the X8 or X10. Is the X10 much better than the 8? The reason I'm unsure, is I really like the X10 but with the limitations of the ad band and that I don't use Plex, it's making look to the X8 for its tri-band setup.
It's not a silly question. If you're not going to use Plex and as you mentioned, and the AD band functionality is not critical then the X8 may be a better fit. You still have the aggregate ports and the tri-band. What are you main objectives for the new router?
Hi, thank you for replying to my question =). My main objectives for a router are to provide a strong fast wifi signal to all the house as the router will be in my office, which is in the loft/attic and our living room is on the ground floor. That's the main objective for the router. When my old router was working it would give me the speeds I'm paying for and more often greater. So I would want a router to match that. I also wanted aggregation for my NAS, ability to cope with the many devices in my home and remote access capability. Due to the 4 replacements of my ASUS AC87U router, I'm also looking for a reliable one.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching and subscribing. Check out my Orbi video. That is what I currently use and it covers my house with blazing speed! I use the X10 for another reason in conjunction with the Orbi, but you wouldn't need to. Let me know what you think.
Thank you for letting me know of the video I'll take a look this evening and let you know =) It will be really good to see your Orbi and X10 setup plus how you configured it!
Hi David. Yes, it plays very nicely with the Orbi. You can the X10 to be in bridge mode then connect with Ethernet to the Orbi. What that lets you do is get the fastest hardwired connection to any system that is within wiring reach of the X10 and yet still get the amazing range and speed of the Orbi. for your entire house. Thanks for watching!
I'll do some testing soon. My guess would be that it can't compete with the Orbi in terms of sheer range since that is the whole point of a Wi-Fi system. It offers a different set of advantages so it's not exactly a fair comparison. I'm planning on using them both.
I am looking to replace my Nighthawk AC1900 who can't handle Wifi anymore. Too many connected devices I guess. I need to be absolutely sure about getting a new router. I am wondering if I would be better with the Nighthawk AX8 or AX12. Either way, it will take me 1 year to pay it in full. @@TechGearTalk
Nice video. I'm looking for a wireless router to replace my internet provider's router. I have 30+ devices and it's now been disconnecting the wireless and acting unpredictable. They sent a new router, but no difference, so I believe its a limitation of the router. I've seen that the X10 supports 20+ devices, but does that mean it will cope easily with 30? It's a mixture of Sonos, iPads, iPhones, Apple TV, IoT devices etc that I have. All I want is high speed wireless with good coverage that can cope with 30+ devices. Thanks in advance.
Hi Mike. Check out the Orbi th-cam.com/video/Q_GCTwf6Dgw/w-d-xo.html. In terms of coverage, it can't be beat. It has been absolutely awesome. We probably have around 20 devices connected to it and it crushes it.

Well, if you do happen to make a second video... Can you show the range of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band Wi-Fi as the signal falls off due to distance? Also, since it's designed for a very large house show how many walls the Wi-Fi signal can pass through before creating dead spots. Show tests of the Plex media server on the router. Such as how many devices can stream from it at different video quality. Show and demonstrate DFS Channels... The router is over year old now... what version of firmware is the router on? what changes and or updates have been made?
Those are all super solid ideas, thank you so much!! Just so you know, I don't use the wifi on this router. I actually use the Orbi for Wifi through this router. No single router that I've seen can rival the Orbi's coverage. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/Q_GCTwf6Dgw/w-d-xo.html I have no dead spots anywhere in the house. You'll see speed tests from all around the house. It's been working crazy well for me. Let me know what you think.
Still using the Netgear X4S and it's a BEAST!
Yeah, the R7800 is another really nice option. Thanks for watching!
IEEE 802.11AD 60Ghz can only be used within a small area / small room. And you'll need to find a compatible adapter for your device.

I think netgear has their own mesh things that can be added to your X10 setup. The things that work like orbi

Yes, it's faster at closer range if you are using 802.11 AD, that's true. But it's really a matter of what you need rather than which is better.
