I seriously didn't expect Jojo SBR in the 2nd place, I'm very happy about that

    • @audax_

TBH while i really enjoyed it and it's far and away the best jojo part next to Jojolion, i feel it's one of the most overrated manga out there. Don't get me wrong, it pretty much perfected the jojo formula and adapted it to a more mature and nuanced story, but i still feel there's quite a jump from that to the top of the top. Funny Valentine i was especially underwhelmed by, people always praised him as one of the best villains ever but i can't see him as anything other than just another self righteous but clearly evil dude and (imo) lacks the charisma of someone like Kira or Dio to really make him shine.

    • @ivank5676
      @ivank5676 ปีที่แล้ว +31

The thing I found really special about Funny Valentine, is that he is, unlike Dio or Kira, selfless. While he does clearly evil things, he actually I believe the most fleshed out villain. With a philosophy not centered on himself, and a backstory. He even convinced Jhonny of his good intentions at some point, and when I read that it felt like he was speaking from the heart. Even though, maybe he wasn't.
Don't take this as me policing what you feel, since we're randos on the internet and the way our feelings work is probably vastly different. But to me Funny Valentine is a special character. I can feel it somehow.

@@ivank5676 yeah, i get that's how many people see him but i just can't, especially after the attempted rape scene. That last encounter with Johnny to me was just a despicable and selfish (the whole "fucking the world except the US" thing) human being trying to desperately convince Johnny but even then he tried to kill him because he didn't care to compromise.

In Grand Blue's defence I want to say, that there're a lot of mangas on this list, incredibly well-written, the ones that will make you suffer great losses, and mental breaks while you're reading them, however you will not be emotionless reading them, unless you're psycho. My point is, these mangas deliver something that will touch you one way or another, and as for Grand Blue, it is a humor that touched me, I can tell you, that I nearly died several times laughing to the point where my stomach hurt so much.

exactly man, not every story need to be an adventure story, a "dont-give-up-on-yourself" journey, "believe-in-nakama-power" or a tragic love one. Sometimes you just need a feel good manga that make you laugh till your side hurts and Grand Blue deliver it. Great character and jokes all around, the best thing that i like about it is how so far the story still resolve around diving.

The one from 1982 is actually a manga by Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli: Nasicaa The Valley of the Wind; which is actually an anime movie. And plenty of manga from the 70s and 80s are great. Also Dragon Ball should be on the list, even just in the 40s. I get that people haven’t read it, but it is just the easiest manga to read even if the story isn’t super in depth or complex.

There is a huge amount of character development, 200 chapter foreshadowings, epic fights, insanely good art (ch. 80+), and one of the most thought out plots of all time. Let me advocate for Nausicaa and I'm quite suprised its so high too. A lot of people has watched the movie but not so many picked up the manga, but many who have read it consider it to be Miyazaki's magnum opus. Without his completion of Nausicaa's manga, he wouldn't have come to the conlusion he reached for Princess Mononoke. Gor Miyazaki being known to be a film director and animator catered for children, you rarely get to see him take those shackles off to wistness his untethered side and we get that in full glory in Nausicaa and also Mononoke.
The themes and ways he characterizes the inhabitants of the setting is quite superb while also gping ham on his own fascination and geekdom of miliarty and warfare, it's a treat for those who share in this interest. You rarely get an author who can protray warfrare like he does while mixing styles of it from different periods and blend it so confidently. Taking trench warfare while there are heavy artillery akin to WW2 with diesel punk type aircrafts and to top that off have armored cavarly intermittened the battle field, tha'ts a hodge podge of differing technologies and tactics that shouldn't work together but man does he manage it. Like Miura is fucking excellent at illustrating largescale wars with cavarly charges, but the cavarly charge in Nausicaa just has a follows the flow of the terrain better and this difference largely may be due to Miyazaki's main profession giving him the means to visualize movement cleaner than even Miura.
But with all that being said and it mainly being Miyazaki's fascination of warfare, the story and the characters are fleshed out alot more compared to the film. The film only covers maybe 2 volumes worth and the whole manga series span 7 volumes, as well as the film needing a create the conflict and find resolution to said conflict with in the given span of the film. So there were alot of measures and story beats they needed to alter to fit that criteria. One such character who's role was greaterly change in the film was Kushana and the film required her to be an antagonistic figure while in the manga she played more of a foil to the protagonist Nausicaa, both are princess of a nation but choose drasticallt different means in acting within the role they were born into. Both learning from one another's traits and developing aspects of their character that held them back in some way.
It's a short read and a fantastic read if you ever want to give it a shot.

@@J0k3rz Long comment ahead, but, yes definitely, TG was my number 1 story for a very long time, and it's practically a tie with AOT and ANH.
Being completely honest, the TG anime is very very bad, it utterly fails in almost everything the manga achieved, s1 is the only decent season (even then I'd prefer the anime) but s2-4 are all train-wrecks in every regard, s2 deviated from the manga and opted for a weird anime only story that failed to achieve much, it skipped a very very important arc for Kaneki's development and character, redid the manga arcs in a different light (the ones that weren't skipped), and completely changed the ending of s2 which was retconned later anyway in s3-4 when they ditched the anime only route and got back to sticking with the manga, the train-wreck that is s2 alone has completely ruined every ounce of quality and potential the story had in my opinion, but despite sticking with the manga for s3-4, things just got worse.
It seems that for s3-4 the animators just gave up on trying to make a coherent story that makes sense (maybe they thought it was already too late after the failure of s2), they started cutting so much material and only adapting the action and the fights that nothing made sense, nothing was explained, deaths had no weight, characters made unexplainable decisions, TG turned from a very thematically rich story with many complex characters who have genuine weight to them that feel alive and have reasons to do what they do, to a sh*tshow where nothing makes sense, not to mention the retconning of the s2 ending just added to the confusion.
Ironically, I think the anime would have been miles better if it stuck to the anime only route it began with s2, by going back to adapting manga material, all it did was spoil audiences on big plot points and deaths without ANY of the substance and quality that came with these plot points, not just that, by sticking to the anime only route, people in the anime/manga community would recognize the two as separate stories, similarly to FMA and FMAB/FMA manga, and people who watch the anime and enjoy it would be compelled to check out the manga rather than thinking the two are the same.
The anime is straight up incompetent, there's no other way of putting it, it utterly fails at the only thing an anime adaptation is supposed to do, adapt the story.

Girls Last Tour is my uncontested number 1 manga. The only thing that comes close is actually another manga by the same author "Shimeji Simulation". Which I highly recommend you read when you finish Girls Last Tour.
You also mentioned the GLT anime which is functionally 1/1 with the manga, the only major difference being that the aspect ratio makes it so they can't do some of incredible single page shots the manga does, so I'd still recommend the manga for that reason. Also the anime only covers 4 out of the 6 volumes. So there isn't enough content left to make another season to justify them finishing it from a business perspective. So you'd have to read it anyway. The author recently tweeted about how he wishes the anime could finish and people ask him about it, but that's out of his control.
