Whoever attended this MTV NYE show got a very special treat seeing Duran Duran and a Flock of Seagulls. I wonder if any of those people there have seen this recording and realize how special a show that was. I was a pre-teen at the time and very enamored with the Brit bands. Duran Duran went on to become super huge in 1983 through 1985 - many of their famous hits were at that time. They have sold more albums than any band worldwide since then, except for the Beatles. Quite an achievement for Brit guys who are self-taught.

it's been more than 30 years we've had an MTV most people prefer and long for. That original MTV format lasted about 10 years or so. We've had this current format longer than the original was around. Says a lot, let that sink in.

Young people don't even watch that much TV period, their free time is taken up by Twitter, YT, TikTok and Instagram. I'm sure there's a small group of hipsters who would ironically tune in to a "new" MTV every now and then to show how cool and retro they are, but not in any kind of significant numbers. Duran Duran’s Seven and the Caged Tiger, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and a picture disk album that has a guy in a metal mask on the vinyl Quiet Riot’s Metal Health! Which by the way knocked Michaels Thriller out of the number 1 position that year. What a time to be a kid!
I was 8 months old when this aired:) loved mtv as a kid in the late 80s and throughout the 1990s so definitely cool to see the stuff I missed. Especially since many of these songs I grew up hearing on the radio

Me too! I want the REAL MTV (MUSIC television!) Back! They totally ruined MTV when they put in more reality shows than creative music videos. In the early days, the premiere of MTV videos was a party-like event. I especially enjoyed when they had the singers and musicians guest hosting and introducing videos. It was a special treat for me as a pre-teen to be able to stay up late watching MTV! Friday Night Videos was cool too, and Headbangers Ball.
This is like going to a concert back in the 80s. I was only 10 Years old BTW I watched MTV When I was hatched out of Cable TV . Not many people got MTV but we did.
Just think, Thriller was released December 1st for Christmas sales and a 19-year old George Michael was unheard of in the states. What a wave of talent that was about to be unleashed!

I was there that night. They were serving homemade chocolate chip cookies and vodka on the rocks, I was so drunk I could not get my head off the table BUT Flock of Seagulls and Duran Duran sounded great, although Duran looked like they were lip-synching to an extent.

Classic mtv here. This is still 1 year even before the Rock’n wrestling days with Cyndi Lauper and Lou Albano. Any era of mtv is better than todays’ where they just show Ridiculousness 20 hours a day. Why do they even bother having a channel today if that’s all they show 90% of the time.

Around 99-2000 they really changed. They Had different music video segments. Morning, noon, late night.
Then it just faded after a couple yrs.
