Hmong people are probably related to mon. Alot of hmong test for mon khmr dna and hmong people use bronze gong drum, bamboo organ flute, wear a sash on waste, wear silver ring around neck and wrist. some hmong people in china have family name starting with khuat. Khuat thoa, khuat Lee like some austroasiatic people. Hmong people were pushed out of south china as well and were sinicized like other austro asiatic people.

Oddly enough the Mon national symbol is the Hamsa bird which is also a very popular animal in Khmer and Thai mythology. In Cambodia they have two epic ancient story based on hamsa birds called Suvannahong and Hong Yun. These are stories of epic battles and giant ogre etc. Ancient Mon and Ancient Cham kingdom had great arts and culture and fabulous cities with millions of inhabitants similar to Ancient Khmer. Despite warfare happening in all 3 kingdoms they were still able to establish a very rich and beautiful culture and build amazing historical temples to leave to their people. Also their culture and costumes were beautiful and unique. Ancient Siam, Myanmar and Lao were nice too beautiful historic monuments and temples and arts etc. Amazing culture that they left behind in the mainland of SE Asia. Proud!

@@estupendo8556 In Thailand, there are several Tai-Kadai ethnic groups that hold significant presence. The major ethnic group is the Thai, also known as Central Thai, who form the majority population. In the northeastern region, there are the Isan people, also referred to as Northeastern Thai, and their close cultural ties to Laos are evident. The Shan community, known as Tai Yai, has a notable presence in northern Thailand. Additionally, ethnic groups like Tai Lue, Black Tai (Tai Dam), White Tai (Tai Khün), Tai Song (Tai Long), Tai Nua (Tai Neua), Tai Hongjin, and Tai Ya contribute to the diverse tapestry of Thai society.
Looking back to the 11th century, during the troublesome Khmer period, cities such as Dvaravati and Lavo were ravaged and left in ruins. It was a chaotic time, resulting in loss of life and the displacement of many who sought refuge in places like lower Burma, ancient Pyu Thaton, and Pegu, while the Burman Pagan Kingdom expanded its territories towards lower Burma.
However, in the 12th and 13th century, the Tai-Kradai people began to make their mark. They migrated to Southeast Asia and chose to settle in the remains of cities like Lavo, Dvaravati, and Haripunchai. Interacting with the local Mon and Khmer Malay communities, they absorbed elements of their cultures, blending and intertwining traditions. Ultimately, this fusion led to the foundation of their very first kingdom, Sukhothai.
It is interesting to note that the Tai-Kadai people are referred to as 'Shyam' in Sanskrit, which signifies 'dark' or 'black.' Similarly, in Chinese, they are known as 'Xiān' (暹), while in Burmese, they are called 'Shan' (ရှမ်း). In English, the term 'Siam' was historically used to describe them, further reflecting their historical connections and cultural diversity."

Austroasiatic peoples were never large in numbers to begin with. Compared to Kradai peoples, austronesians, and tibeto-burmans.. the largest mon-khmer group in this modern day and age is khmer. Viet to me, don't count because most of them are heavily mixed with tai and Chinese people. Many of them are flat out chinese or tai ethnic. Yet, us mon-khmer manage to create powerful civilizations and had powerful influence with out forcing ourselves upon anyone.. we were models for other cultures/kingdoms that formed later.

The Thai people are very uneducated, they claim the word "Khom" isnt "Khmer", but Khom is Khmer because both words means "south" or "buttom"
    Krom - Khom - Khemra - Khmer
Even the Tai Lao people from Laos also knows that Khom is Khmer because they call Khmer people "Khom" as well. All Tai tribes refers to "Khmer" as Khom. Khom came from the word Krom but the "r" sound isn't native to the Tai tongue so the word evolved from Krom to Khom. The Sukhothai's called the Khmers "Khom" because Cambodias land was below or south of Sukhothai/Thailand.
