But or Rent - The Karate Kid Part II
    - • The Karate Kid: Part II
After learning that his father is dying, karate master Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) returns home to Okinawa, bringing his protege, Daniel (Ralph Macchio), with him. In Japan, Miyagi is surprised to discover that his old sweetheart, Yukie (Nobu McCarthy), has remained single. Meanwhile, Daniel is attracted to Yukie's niece, Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). But romance must be put on hold while Daniel and Miyagi deal with local bullies and long-harbored grudges.

🎉FUN FACT: Speaking of Pat Morita'S (Mr. MIYAGI) not speaking in the voice from the movie. His mentor was RED FOX (he was a standup comic 1st). He used to do an AMAZING Red Fox impression 😉

It is Obon (pronounced Oh-bone). It is the annual Japanese festival honoring one's ancestors. It takes place in mid-August. This year it will be Aug 13 - 16. August is also the height of typhoon season in Japan. I was in Japan, near Mt. Fuji, camping with the Boy Scout Jamboree. We were hit by a particularly heavy typhoon. It is very much like it was depicted in the movie, although the one that hit us rained us out the first day, gave us a few hours the next to hike to our campsite and set up camp, then hunker down for the next day and a half for the back side of the typhoon to hit us.

Thankfully there was no typhoon when I was near Mt Fuji 🗻 but it was chilly and so cloudy you could barely see any of Fuji-san.

This was taken from the IMDB website.
Although set in Okinawa, the film was actually shot in Oahu, Hawaii. The island was chosen because of its similar climate to Japan, its large Okinawan population and the convenience of shooting on US soil.
Principal photography took place in Oahu, Hawaii, in the northeastern area of the island known as the "windward side". The local countryside in modern-day Okinawa had been drastically changed due to the presence of military bases, so other locations in both Japan and Hawaii were scouted as alternative filming locations. Filmmakers selected a property in Oahu that was privately owned by a retired local physician who agreed to allow a portion of the land to be used in the film. To form the Okinawan village portrayed in the film, seven authentic replicas of Okinawan houses were constructed along with more than three acres of planted crops. Fifty Okinawa-born Hawaii residents were also recruited as film extras.
Great film reaction by the way. One of my favorite childhood movies to catch on basic TV channels and even movie channels back then.

"-san" at the end of a name is a sign of respect, like Mr. or Mrs. It could be replaced with other things too like "-sensei" for a teacher (or anyone else smarter than you, like a doctor).

    Great reaction! 😊
RIP always to Pat Morita(Mr. Miyagi)!!!
I clicked on this one so fast. LOL!!! And you're getting so close to the start of "Cobra Kai".
I've always liked how this movie takes place right after the first one. Then we get the small time jump.
4:42 - 5:18 Seriously one of the best moments in all three of the movies. Gotta love Mr. Miyagi!
Fun Fact: The scenes with Mr. Miyagi and Daniel in Okinawa were filmed in a part of Hawaii that had a similar climate to Japan.
22:51 - 23:18 Now you know what happened with Daniel's father. That was such a great scene Daniel and Mr. Miyagi.
The O-bon festival and the final fight between Daniel and Chozen is one of my favorite sequences of the movie.
Up next is "The Karate Kid Part 3".
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

I went to Japan for two weeks when I was in high school, didn't get to go to Okinawa but we landed in Osaka and went across the main island from there to Tokyo, stopping in a few places along the way like Kamakura and Kyoto. I loved it so much! Without a doubt one of the best times of my life.

7:54 "How did the Japanese feel about Pat Morita's Japanese accent?"
Because of the end result of World War 2, Japanese children are required to take English classes from 3rd grade to 8th grade. Most just go along with the program, but others will continue their English education 9th grade and beyond. Right now, the Japanese are just killing it with heavy metal music and band members are either studying English or catching up on it as Americanized English is becoming a "universal language" and it is useful in places that pay big (North America, Europe, parts of Asia). American movies and music are a big thing in Japan.

Miyagi loved Yukie since he was a teenager, I believe, he left because of Sato, came to the USA, got married, enlisted to the army, and got back to the village in this movie. Yukie was his first love, did he love his US wife? The movies doesn't have a clear answer for that one...
