A new fridge unplugger here...I live in the UK and most of the year its colder outside than in and with electricity and gas prices going through the roof I decided to switch my fridge off and give it a go. the first thing I noticed was how quiet the house is without the whirring of the fridge freezer. I have always kept my eggs out of the fridge and to be honest they are there for weeks and are fine to use.

If they would have replaced that decades old fridge with a smaller modern one, they could run it on a solar panel and a battery if they wanted. Today's fridges are so efficient - I have one in my camper and I can keep frozen ice-cream in it and it runs on a single 150W solar panel even when I go out into 110 degree desert locations. Plenty of fridges out there for a household that run on regular electric power, don't use much and don't break the bank buying them.

Live in Florida & not in best conditions so need clean new fridge and freezer to stock up meat by buying little by little every month to a certain point, cuz can't keep too long. You need pumacin native american food preservation and learn from TH-cam folks. Dont be hard on yourself. We've been conditioned. Is all about money in this world. We need to free ourselves some. You have to refrigerate store bought eggs because in the United States they're washed. You can and ought to keep unwashed eggs out of refrigeration.

Fairy Dust when they wash the egg the protective membrane is washed away too.
And that protective membrane is the thing that keeps bacteria out of the egg.

Consuming 6 eggs each (from a dozen) within a week? Isn't that unhealthy (cholesterol) as I'm led to believe that you're supposed to eat no more than half of that.

My grandma ate eggs, bacon and toast every morning. She lived to be 101 years old.
In the USA I could not eat eggs, only egg whites. I moved to Nicaragua in 2014. Now I eat eggs almost every day! Here in Nicaragua not a single store refrigerates their eggs. Also here in Nicaragua at least half of the population doesn't own a refrigerator.

    • @aNaturalist

You're correct. People just like to believe the more recent industry funded studies, like those funded by the egg board or the National Dairy Counsel. Then, we have authors that are popular, but sure aren't scientist. Also, if they were to start worrying about cholesterol in eggs, then they'd have to think about it in meats, and you know..... they sure don't want to go down that road! So instead, they say that much of the good science in the previous century was wrong, while industry funded studies are held close to heart. Go figure.......

With the price of energy few can afford to run a fridge or a freezer, they are probably the biggest consumer of electricity and most are badly insulated. Another big consumer of energy is WIFI routers left on all the time. These loads maybe small but they are continuous, just like a dripping tap would fill a swimming pool eventually, these loads cost you money. What is the point of using a Fridge/Freezer when few people live that far away from a shop these days.

Its like going back to medieval times. Do these people also do the laundry manually and have no smartphone, computer or TV and walk to everywhere they want to go (or by horse)?
No fridge means more food will be go rotten and have to be thrown away. You can buy smaller packages but that is less economical.
While in some areas you an keep things outside the problem is that temperatures constantly change, items you just want to cool can freeze and defrost every day or get to warm. This means much food will be spoiled.
Besides that fridges have become more and more economical.
From what I've heard the only real effective way to cool without electricity would be to store items underground where the temperature is cool and stable.
Which will cost a lot to make It is impossible f you live in an appartement and even very annoying when you have a regular home, every time you want to get a beer (or something else) you have to go downstairs to get something.
It appears that all the trouble you have to go trough to live without a fridge probably costs you more effort, energy, money and resources than having a fridge.
Doing groceries every day will be more costly on the long run unless you live next to a store. But most people will have to drive to get their groceries.
