I worked all positions of a grocery store for years. The set up, lighting, little things are trying to get you to buy more and more. Why is bread away from the milk? So you have to walk across the store and pick up things you don't need. I am glad that I worked there, even though it was long ago. I see any store for how they are truly set up. My kids know how to read a store and get past the fluff. Thank you, Dr. Berg.
Dad worked for casino design And sales ..Casinos have no clocks anywhere to tell you its time to leave No windows to tell you its day or night Dark ceilings so you dont bother looking up Bright floors/carpet to keep you looking ahead Flashing moving lights to keep you happy And awake And a design to better get you lost Than know exactly where the exits are. Cashing out normally has a long gated rope line And 1 teller that is told to work slow...So you spend more coins waiting for the line to lessen...This floor plan Idea was sold to IKEA in the 80's And this is why you need painted lines on the floor And walk past 1000 items before finding what you need
I went to Ikea ONCE. It took me ages to get out because I wasn't allowed to go out the way I came in. I swore I'd never use the store again. This was many years ago and I've stuck to that pledge ever since that day. I wouldn't go into an Ikea store now even if everything were free.
@@cherylT321 - there's a chain supermarket in the northeast called Stew Leonards and it's like a serpentine maze that you have to follow all the way thru before getting to the cash registers, so that you HAVE to pass every single item in the store.
Yep, and I've not set foot in IKEA for ages because of that reason. If I wanna check out the item I saw online to buy, I need to calculate cruising through the prescribed path for 15 mins as there are no shortcuts. Ef that and if I need something. I can go to a straight up furniture store.

Since 5 years ago I eat healthy ( no sugar , no , no sweet/ cake biscuit ,...junk food, no processed food , no soft drink / juice ....) & I never drank alcohol or smoked any cigarettes/ drugs in my life . When I go to grocery store I never buy them and whatever I buy I read the ingredients first, never buy canned stuf and try to buy them in jar , never buy cooked or pre cooked , I cook from scratch. I've lost 12 kg and now I'm 58 kg , so happy. Thank to you Dr. Burg for your eye opening videos you make for us ❤👏🙌🙏❤️
You have be mess up moderation is the best thing. Ιf you cut from life and you try to force yourself to that you lose the big picture of living and yes even if you say you are happy that doesn't mean you are. You no buyers remorse? You need to create resistant no complete cut from the life.
I eat as much crap as I can. I’m in my seventies so I’m way past worrying about longevity. By the way I’ve always eaten lots of processed food , it’s in the genes. Oh and I’m on no medications and still go out and chop my own firewood.
Yes a good idea to really cut down on processed foods (it appears the US is bad for it, but UK and AU as well). You have to find the balance of diet that works for you. It could mean reducing carbs or higher protein (both work for me very well). It also depends on your age and activity level as well. For example, most men and women tend to lose the middle-aged weight gain by late 60s or 70s. For women, weight gain at or peri-menopause is common, and suck that up, it is to keep estrogen in fat stores, better in the long term (not talking about grossly overweight, just pudgy). But yes, at the end of the day, completely cut out soft drink ("soda"), limit fruit juice but do include it, at least a good quality one without loads of sugars or artificial sweeteners (those are bad as well).
A little more than 2 years ago, I dropped all sugar, processed foods, and high fat content and went to an all-natural, low sodium diet. No cheat days. It’s become a lifestyle. I lost 35 pounds and kept it off and feel much better thanks in part to not having glucose spikes. Thanks for educating all of us, doc.
Since going low carb my grocery shopping is simpler and faster. One of the first things I noticed is how much the store is filled with crap I don’t need but they try to make me want.
I was just thinking the other day how 90% of what's in the store is carbohydrates. The day after I stuff my face with that trash, I'll wake up wearing it. I know this because I did it for over a decade. So many of these products are dressed up to appear healthy when they are in reality junk food. Even claims of "reduced sugar" are a red flag more than anything. They've taken sugar out and replaced it with various artificial sweeteners and fillers to restore the bulk. The fillers are no better and often worse than the sugar they took out! What a world.
Fantastic video, Dr. My wife and I, stopped going to the food stores. We shop only via our local store APP and home delivery. We found out that by doing so, we dropped the weekly expense by 40%. It makes us shop only for what we really really need. I wish we thought about it before. I recommend all to try.
My diet is easy because now i only eat no sugar, no carbs, no processed, no toxic ingredients. That only leaves me with a few of the same foods, eggs, some cheese & i grow vegetables. Thanks for your recommendations!
If you are able to, keep chickens. Your own eggs are just light years ahead of any in the supermarket (or you can buy eggs from farm gate or farmer's markets etc). Such a massive difference in flavour. I grow some of my own vegetables as well (loving on my heirloom tomatoes, brilliant). Strawberries are another that have been ruined by Big Supermarket. So easy to grow. I also have a number of blueberry bushes, easy peasy.
I learned about the psychology of grocery stores in college. The only helpful class I took as a psychology minor was Industrial Organizational psychology and it changed the way I look at the work place and marketing. Definitely worth studying.
I just checked the floorplan for the nearest Globus store. It is true that the center isles are mostly clothing, hardware, with some canned food and pasta. There's little in the right third too (drinks and more hardware, a perfect combo!). The food proper takes up the left-side third, an almost perfect square. And, believe it or not, one of two entrance alleys leads right inside this food square, right to the veggies, chicken and fish. Perhaps the Germans don't know the basics... or maybe they do?
It’s crazy walking into walmart and seeing the displays of countless cookies, cupcakes, donuts, cakes etc. just stacked rows on top of rows by the entrance/registers
So, you said a couple of things early on that are problematic. I spent 15 years working for Kroger (various depts and in store management). The fresh bread smell is not artificial. It's not "pumped in". It's the result of the bakery department baking the bread. Now, the reason the bakery uses par-baked bread instead of fully baked bread is because they want to be able to bake it so that the store will smell like fresh bread. But it's not pumped in. The rough flooring in the produce department has nothing to do with slowing people down so that they buy more product. The produce department has rough flooring because it's the most likely place to experience a slip and fall. The product sits unwrapped on tables, and it's pretty common for a grape or a lettuce leaf to fall onto the floor where somebody will slip on it. So in produce they use rough floors to reduce this problem. Grocery stores definitely do a lot of things to try to manipulate their customers. A lot of what you said is accurate. But you definitely got a couple of things wrong
Almost 10 years in across multiple stores as a butcher and I can vouch that you're absolutely correct. The issues come with Walmarts and the like. Surprisingly, places like Sprouts and other fresh markets also come with the same issues as a Walmart. Sprouts does not cut the majority of their meats fresh and they do not grind fresh ground beef. It's all prepacked and dyed.
Fascinating. I’m 55 and consume mostly red meat. I gave up processed foods and most sugar and carbs a few years ago. It was a game changer. I feel and look much better.
@@katrinabennett2759 Organic? I know several small beef producers, there isn't really such a thing as "organic" beef. Good producers will vaccinate their cattle against several diseases but abstain from antibiotics unless a particular animal gets sick. Also, all cattle is grass raised, some are 'finished' in feed lots on grain, some producers finish their cattle on grass. Grass finished takes longer to reach market weight depending on the breed, so it will be more expensive. Just buy good beef, I buy from the small producers sometimes, but mostly Costco. Costco (Kirkland) beef is excellent.
Very little real food in grocery stores. I enjoy walking past isles of junk because it's good exercise! Also reminds me of how educated I've become. Thanks Dr. Berg
I'm glad to hear others are feeling the same. It saves a lot of time and relieves stress as you realize this is all just noise and distraction, but it's sad that too many head straight for the UPF aisles falling victim to these poisons.
Yes!!! Cash is still king. Even though they're trying to eliminate it👎🏾 My apartment complex sent everyone an email saying they won't be excepting cash anymore😑 I don't see how they can do that when cash is still legal tender.
Since most grocery stores now have curbside pickup and/or delivery, I seldom go inside the store itself. I just go into the store’s app, make my grocery/shopping list, and choose whether I want curbside pickup or delivery. Easy peasy! Love it!
pumping out artificial smells, patterns on the floor that confuse you, playing french music so you feel fancy and buy more wine....hahaha 😂. Thanks for this info, this was golden and also hilarious. People are funny. How about just get a better mind set and relationship to your food.
i really appreciate your content. as i get older i am becoming aware of how toxic and unhealthy the food in grocery stores really is. quite sad. but thankfully there are people like you trying to spread awareness. just a year ago i was getting close to 230 pounds, eating sugar ice cream cookies and donuts all the time. i knew that what we were eating was bad but the addiction was just too powerful. luckily i woke up and started listening to my body (was starting to get pre-diabetic symptoms) reduced sugar intake by about 90% started trying to only eat non processed foods, cut out most carbs, and started to workout again. all it takes is dedication to yourself and your body and exactly like you said in this video Dr. Eric half the battle is won in the grocery store. just dont buy the crap! anways long winded way of saying thank you. your videos truly did help me
My husband thinks I'm lazy for ordering my food at Walmart but I tell him, it not only keeps me in budget, but I also don't buy things that are not on my list!! I rather shop alone because my bill is always higher if not
In the mid-eighties, I bought a book called Fit For Life. Been following that strategy ever since. It speaks of eating fruit in the morning, not mixing starches with protein, fasting once a week (I don't do that anymore because husbands like to eat every day), etc. At 63 years old, I'm still not on any medications and weigh around 130 pounds! I began using Einkorn flour to make homemade bread that I use for toast.
That book was so influential for me! I stopped dairy completely, became a vegan for 5 years, lost the baby weight I had struggled with for a year…awe-mazing!!!
Very cool. Grocery stores are quite the scam! I have taught myself to ignore the bakery section and I don't buy cereal, ever. My Achilles heel is rotisserie chicken, loaded with sodium and probably horrible for you, but it tastes great. As a suspicious person, I have always appreciated videos like yours that confirm my suspicions. Thanks for exposing this and being a good citizen!
It's amazing to me that people are actually still alive at all by all the junk that's being sold in the grocery stores today. I do wine tastings in all the major grocery stores for the last 10 years or so and it's amazing to me how many people I see that are extremely over weight, maybe 80% of the people are that are shopping. And I've also noticed how many more folks are now having to use the store's scooters to get around because they are so over weight they can't walk very far at all! For me personally, about 99% of the "food" sold in the grocery stores I wouldn't eat ever! Great video, hope folks pay attention!
I just look at what's in their carts & if on a scooter I just shake my head. I highly doubt they know that most of the highly processed foods have ingredients that's make you eat more, like there's no shout off valve. Smart people READ and a lot of it comes down to "Do they really care"?
Omgosh, I've been noticing that for the last 3 or 4 years! It's crazy! Often, if it's the whole family shopping, they take up the entire aisle, and their carts are loaded sky high. Sort of freaks me out, is it mostly the midwest? I've never lived in the midwest before, so I've been wondering if it's something in the water or the soil or the mindset? I can't figure it out. People are obsessed with buying everything in sight and litter everywhere. They throw booze bottles on the streets and sidewalks, clothes, candy wrappers pizza boxes, soda cans, smoothie cups, etc. 😢
YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!! I would always complain to my mom that I could never use coupons in college because all the food I buy was fresh. Even for the good non perfumed soaps, I shop elsewhere to avoid synthetic fragrances.
Imo, fresh whole foods are regularly on sale based on season/holiday, which is 100x better than requiring a coupon (either physical or digital). Fresh whole foods are automatically on sale price at the register (unless the staff are behind on schedule). Coupons have the ability to place a limit and if you don't have a coupon, you don't get the sale price as advertised.
That may true for where you shop, but not so where I shop. There are frequently coupons and specials for items in the produce department. I shop at H-E-B.
Noticed that, too. My grocery loyalty card offers & sales are mostly junk food. They're always fishing to get me to try new things that are pretty bad. Some of it's partly my fault, tho. I do enjoy sugar-free ice cream & ultra thin crust pizza. Which leads to a barrage of other junk offers.
I've done that before. Went to the store to get sour cream chose a few other items I needed but they were out of sour cream so I put everything back and I left
I love your videos man !! this grocery store tour was actually entertaining !! Nowadays, I'm glad I only go shopping for simple foods like eggs, meat, cheese, veggies, to stay healthy and be alive !!! You changed all over our lives !!
Very interesting take on the stores. I use to be a courtesy clerk and cashier at a grocery store. I remember how they would rearrange the shelves at night so customers in the morning would have to walk areas they normally did not go. I basically stay on the vegetables side of the market cuz i dont need anything else
I rarely go into a grocery store, I don’t eat bread, I don’t drink milk, get my veggies, eggs and grass fed meat from a local farm, I get raw sheep cheese from Amazon and fresh fish locally on a Tuesday. This is all thanks to Dr Berg, my diet was mostly processed food up until 2 years ago.
I stock at Walmart and that’s 110% not true. 🤷🏻♂️ also the individual store DOES NOT determine where products go the corporate office does. The corporate office even controls the temperature of the store
I agree with you.. I also work for Walmart, but it's still marking. Eye level for adults, then lower to intice children... sugary, like candy at checkouts..
100% agree with everything. I do take my kids to the store with me, and I point out many of these same things to teach them. Not that I knew everything, so thanks for sharing. This was very enlightening. One more thing I would add.....don't clip coupons unless you have good shopping discipline. You will end up spending more and buying things you don't need or are bad for you. Again, discipline is required, and most people don't have it.
always eat a meal before grocery shopping. I agree , it's tough to find decent food in these stores. Other than canned products my shopping is only meat , dairy , and produce sections.
They put chemicals together and call it food. Ultra processed foods now irritate me at sight because I now know better. Thanks for this priceless information
All the content you talked about in this video reminded me what I’ve learned during marketing course at the university!! lol it’s been a while so, totally refreshed my memory!! I still had it in the back of my head lol 😂 I try my best to stick with my grocery list!! ❤ Thanks again Dr!! Stay safe and blessed always
I agree Dr. Berg❤ I’m on OMAD & intermittent fasting for about 2 years & no processed foods for me! My hunger pains cease to exist until I try a 2 day/3 day, which I’ve done but not as frequent! I’ve lossed over 45 lbs., and do minimal exercising bc my journey truly is for life! I shop the perimeter of the store except when want my EVOO, and snack like non gmo popcorn, which I always add nutritional yeast bc it has a cheese flavor! Continuing my journey for life!🎉 Thank you sooo much Dr. Berg❤
So true even the health food stores and natural products markets are carrying sugar-filled colored with dye gummies and all kinds of candy in plastic containers and putting them on the end caps so you can't miss seeing them.
I look at other people's carts in the supermarket and 80% of them have multiple 6-packs/cases/large bottles of soda. Look no further than those "end caps" for the source of all the obesity and diabetes. In my local supermarket, they are at the end of every aisle and stacked 6 feet high with soda and donuts/snack cakes/etc.
That 80% dominates content creation here as well. Try going to a channel covering those products like "Company Man" and check out the top comments. Not a single one commenting on how unhealthy something like Arizona Iced Tea is, and if you try commenting on it, people tell you to STFU.
When he said, people go and buy a lot of food before it snows thinking, they will die they will starve to death...and that never happens. On point! 🎯Especially in the South. 😂
We do this in the midwest too, but to be fair, i have no idea how long its gunna take for the ice patch at the end of my road to melt, since the city does very little about subdivisions and i dont wanna go anywhere for a week when its crummy outside.
This is true, for the most part. lol In north Alabama in the early 90’s we had a week long power outage with snow and ice on the ground. Never say never. 😂😂
I always thought the best strategy for any food company would be to convince people that if they don't eat they're going to die. What a way to end a food commercial.
I have a college degree in retail and business management, I can add so much to what you have spoke about. One grocery store I worked at used 2 - liter soda pop as a loss leader. As a vendor, I utilized my knowledge of retail practices to increase route sales by twenty to twenty five percent.
As a checked in a grocery store many years ago, I can vouch for everything you said Dr. Berg! I worked in various retail stores in my time and they all use marketing strategies to entice their customers. End caps are indeed more expensive, but customers will buy from them out of saving time trying to find these items throughout the store.
Thanks for this video ! I shared with my kids and told them to watch before their next trip to grocery stores . I kinda knew most of what you said and yet I always end up buying stuff I don’t need , stuff that are not on my list. So , almost 1 year ago, I hired someone to do my groceries for me. First because I don’t have time (for many reasons) and second because I figured that I could save on groceries. Result is I did save about 33% bs when I was or my wife buying groceries. Luckily for us, we live in a country where having someone do grocery for you is really cheap. But then, maybe there’s a business opportunity there for someone wanting to start its own business? It’s not new idea. Personal shoppers exists already for a long time. Anyways - it’s big savings for us. We just give a list and a specific budget. If items are missing in the list because they were out of budget then we are fine with it.
I do like to shop for myself because I am very picky about choosing meats and vegetables. (Often I go to the butcher and a local farm) There are very few packaged foods that we eat, I am a carnivore and make keto meals for the family. When I shop, I go by myself, shop with a list, and stick to it. But it’s taken a while to get there.
I've always thought marketing is one of the most disgustingly dishonest professions a person could ever engage into. This is a pretty good sample of why.
Great video Dr. Berg!! All true! I worked for Giant Food in No. Va. when it was considered "The Quality Food People"...many years ago. We used to wear blue jackets because they perceived 'trust'. Then around 1991they changed to red jackets because the color perceived 'hunger'. (now the employees wear street clothes, no uniform) It's a mind game. Shop the perimeter!! Keep your blinders on & stay healthy!
I worked for a major grocery chain for several years - and here's another tip. Learn the basic layout of the store so when you make your shopping list, you can order the items per the store's layout. That way you can beeline it through the store. Oftentimes, people meander (even with a list) because their list is not in order - which causes people to walk past items multiple times. They may have the willpower to skip it the first time, but on the 2nd or 3rd pass - they cave. This is especially important if you bring kids with you because they will nag every time they pass an item - and parents just give in to shut them up. Be smart when you are shopping. It not only helps your health - but it helps your finances.
I work in a grocery store-the golden zone thing is so true. You can move something that is at eye level and sells really well to the bottom shelf and it’s like it disappears from view entirely. Taking things off the shelf to create scarcity is not a thing. People always think we hide things in the back- not true. We barely have enough labor to put things out on the shelf, let alone go back and remove them. Empty space is lost sales-it is never intentional. Also our short-staffed warehouse often bills us for things it never sends and again, our own lack of enough employees to take care of things means we often don’t notice and fix the problem right away so the space sits empty until we notice and adjust our balance on hand. If it’s empty we also might have it in the back somewhere but not enough eyes on things to keep tabs on what items need restocking. The most popular aisles in our store are the candy/chip aisle and cereal/coffee aisle. The whole “buy two get one” sale format is recently more popular-things rarely just go on sale for a straight price reduction…it’s buy two get one or buy five items in a sale grouping, get a dollar off each one, etc…people fall for every ploy too. So true that most of the grocery store’s stock is garbage food but people want it.
I hate the buy 5 items get $1 off each ploy!!!! Especially when i don't need 5 items. I do try to keep count if the selection is wider to see how many are already on my list and maybe double up so I can save some stock at home.
@@caroblue7988 I know right- they make shopping like work-you have to keep track of all the different offers and what’s in your cart-you can mix and match though-a lot of people think you have to buy five of the same item but you can buy one box of cereal, one bottle of ketchup, one jar of peanut butter etc-as long as each item has a “buy five and save sign”. I miss when it was just on sale period, you could dump it in your cart and move on!
@@Noname-v2w5w exactly! It makes it harder to keep a running tally in my head because I have to remember if I've met their arbitrary number of items accepted! 😡
This is why I only shop at Aldi. I go in with a list, and that's all I will get. Organic Grass-fed Beef, Eggs, Cheese, Grass-Fed Butter, Onions, Frozen Chicken Thighs, Apple Cider Vinegar. I buy the rest of my dried foods like Rice and Beans online to be shipped. Most of my veggies and greens I grow myself, so they are in season and fermented. I eat no processed foods.
I have never wanted more junk food ever until I actually get to the grocery store (I am an organic everything girl!) and it’s all because the moment I get there it’s like BAM it’s all in my face and it looks so pretty and yummy!! Dr Berg can’t be more right with all this information!!! They play all kinds of tricks on us with the real estate of their products in order for us to buy it. It’s nothing short of sorcery.. If my husband does the grocery shopping, he definitely falls victim and comes home with a bunch of junk food 🤪🙄😳😠
The sad part about organic not everything is organic it's just a label. I've watched a worker switching eggs out of another brand of eggs, not organic, to put into a carton of organic eggs only because some eggs were broken. I just couldn't believe it. Imagine we're all drinking organic juice supposedly when, in actuality, it's not organic it's only a stamped label.....
@@2022universallove it’s best when you can to grow your own, buy locally or use a reputable organic grower (locally of course). That’s about all you can do. When all else fails you really gotta clean your fruit and veggies before you eat it! Soak it in apple cider vinegar and a pinch of baking soda for 5 min rinse and air dry right before eating or cooking.
They're not making me buy more groceries these days. I go in quickly, buy just what I need and leave. I can no longer casually walk through the store because I can not afford anything other than what I need to survive.
I dont think people realize how overstimulating the whole experience is too, for everyone. Decision fatigue can be rather intense too. Once i saw a little video on YT from someone who was in prison for a considerable time. She was talking about how extremely overwhelmed she was trying to get deoderant. They are used to no alternative options. So when she was in a walmart, it was just mentally crippling. The whole experience is just WAY too much for the senses to handle. Our eyes are forced to take in WAY too much information and our brains arent used to doing this much processing. The whole experience is overbearing. Thats probably why we come back home entirely drained. Thats why i like delivery. I dont have to deal with all of it, which has removed a MAJOR stress from my life. Its so weird to "detox" from anything, because then we realize just how MUCH something is overbearing on our body, mind and spirit. Its also nice to avoid that cesspool of other peoples chaotic energy. Its all so draining.
I feel that same way! As I'm walking toward the entrance of a supermarket, I speak to myself what I'm going to buy and make a game out of seeing how fast I can be. But then.....the bright lights make my mind go blank, the seemingly endless aisles feels like a maze, kids screaming..... So, I let my husband do the shopping now.
@@CjbrkBrooks i dont really understand this "solution." A) how does a list fix looking at a shelf full of 500 options? How does having a list reduce the eye strain and mental fatigue of being in a store having to process constant data overload even though i know exactly where list items are? B) How do you avoid being in a purchasing rut by not looking at other options? I get sick of buying the same stuff constantly, for YEARS on end, and want to try something else to salvage what remains of my sanity. Having a list doesnt address the issues i brought up in the OP. List or not, the store looks and functions the same. The awful flickering lighting is the same. I can shop a list online and not have to deal with all the issues i mentioned. Especially the people.
I work at a grocery store, but my store is basic to the point that it doesn't have a lot of these "features". For example, you will only smell cookies if there are cookies actually baking or just baked. Same goes for chicken in the fryer. Our floor tile is all pretty much one color, except for a few that had to be replaced with a slightly different color because they were broken. Things like this my store is cost reduced to the point that you don't see these things. My city is quite small, so going all out on all of this stuff is just too expensive. Literally any grocery store can have placement though, so of course we do. We have endcaps, which I have a weird tendency to ignore, as well as displays and certain items getting certain locations. I personally find canned vegetables being directly across from pre packaged cookies is a very weird one in my store. My best advice is to learn your store. Knowing where most of the items you buy are will reduce your need to walk down aisles of items or even look at items in that section you have no intention of buying. Of course remodels and resets make this difficult, but it is best to know your store the best you can. I am not against bringing kids to the store, but trying to focus their attention on what you are there to buy is probably smart, like letting them read the grocery list for example. You will probably end up with a few not so great items along the way (especially with things like school bus shaped Little Debbie displays right next to the produce department), but it is better than a buggy full of junk.
I had a friend that got the zero sugar in a Pepsi and I showed him the label and pointed out sugar, different name but it was sugar. He was shocked he believed the 0 sugar.
@@katrinaterry-brown2920 Your friend would do well for themselves is they didn't drink any soft drinks. Water, unsweet tea (home brewed), black coffee and that's it.
At the grocery store know the paper products isle and use that to get to the back of the store and out again. King Soopers has recently made it hellish to get around the store, much longer walk. I buy LESS in there than I used to cause I know I'm being literally forced to walk by more products. That they put wine and beer directly in front of the dairy foods hits me as obscene. I am avoiding that store more and more even though it is very close to my house.
I don't have a problem anymore when I'm shopping 😊 I've learned so much from you, and I'm sticking to the food I know is healthy. Fish, turkey, chicken, vegetables, fruit, nuts and olive oil 😊 Only clean food for me
OMG I just did exactly that. I needed dog food and as you know, you can't just change it. There was just one bag left on the shelf. I asked the guy if there were more. When I came around back to the dog foo there were 3. What did I do, I bought all of them thinking there is a shortage 🙈🙈🙈
Not only heavily processed & dodgy ingredients but packaged in heavy plastics or processed & cooked in their packaging 🤮 the supermarket is mostly full of rubbish.
Microwave popcorn, omg there must be so many chemicals coming off that super heated bag of oil that is lined with plastics or whatever it is. It's probably boiling so many chemicals into the hot oils.
I was one of those ppl that was addicted to sugar & sometimes still struggle if I once get to eating it. I actually used to dip red radishes in a lil sugar. My dad did that too but wasn’t addicted to sugar, but it is good, ha ha! Used to eat a fair amount of Mac n cheese, w/ just velveeta melted into it. The velveeta from the early 70’s is Not what is out there today even tho it wasn’t good for ya then. I think all the processed food is exponentially worse anymore. Ugh!! We used to eat a lot of Crisco back in the day too. Didn’t know any better.
Thank goodness for my local one of a kind grocery store. They stock hard to find items just for me, but I have noticed that other folks are buying them as well. We have local, top quality grass fed beef for a low price, local produce. Only low point is seafood, but we are in Nebraska.🤠 Just having a grocery store is a blessing out here. In Cody, the only grocery store for many miles was built and is run by students. Huge difference from the big chains. They tend to carry more quality items.
Such a good video. I stay away from refined carbs and bread and starches and it’s difficult because the rest of America doesn’t, and it makes me feel like there’s something wrong with me when I can’t tolerate that rise in blood glucose. But the reality is no one can really sustain such a high bad carb lifestyle for long… it just takes time for the body to catch up and the pancreas to slow down
Yesterday at the grocery store, I put an item in my cart simply because it was on a great clearance price. This is an item I normally never buy. When I got home and looked at the ingredient list it had a lot of soybean oil, the very thing I am currently trying to get out of my diet. I usually do read ingredients lists, but the "deal" overrode that and pulled me in!
if it's a one-off consumption why even care? Treat yourself at times with things like that. You did well and bought it. Shake off guilt of it. As long as it doesn't get to be the rule, don't bother.
Walmart takes previously frozen sockeye salmon and puts a mark down label over the words “previously frozen” when you cook it, since it thawed for days all the fluid full of nutrients are drained from the salmon and pool in the package and its like eating fishy tasting styrofoam. You’re better off buying the frozen product, keep it frozen and cook it frozen, never let it thaw.
Simple solution…. Grab ANOTHER package without the “mark-down” label, and check it out for all the needed info. Then, if “yes, this is good food for me, yes the Price Is Right, yes I WILL use it before it goes bad”, then and only then grab the “mark-down”. Ignore the “Front Label With Large Bold Print”, and meticulously read and understand the “Labels On The Back Where The Truth Resides” aka “Nutrition Values” and the all-important “Ingredients List”. These two are highly regulated by the FDA AND CPSC.
I never buy anything on impulse. I only get what I need. The only times I get something that I didn’t intend on getting is when I remember that I’m out of something while I’m in the store. I don’t fall for the snacks at the register. You can often get those same items cheaper and in larger quantities elsewhere in the store, or somewhere else entirely.
I stopped going grocery shopping and set up a bi weekly order of the same repeat items that I’ll need as staples (vegetables, fresh fruit, milk, eggs etc). Sure it’s expensive to get everything delivered but it worked out for me for health reasons to avoid processed and synthetic foods.
Nice video. Most of what we need in the USA is within an hour of most people: local farmer’s market, local eggs, local meat, local meat processing etc….preaching to the choir here, but we know that grocery stores are over stuffed with ultra processed crap, most ingredients labels read like a college chemistry lab assignment, not “food”
We in northern England, UK have an extremely popular discount store called “B & M”. It is quite shocking to see the economy (so-called) “food”, sodas and booze stacked up on their shelves…and how so many of my fellow countrymen absolutely love the place! I worry for the future health of their later years. Many are young families filling their trolleys up with utter junk…and raising their children on it.
Several things help our budget and diet. Hubby goes to store with a list and ONLY buys what is on the list. When I shopped I went down the paper aisle to get to the back so no impulse buys. I do find it curious(?) that when I go to my last stop (produce so it doesn't get squished) the bakery is on the perimeter right before the produce section.
If you’re able to shop the perimeter of a grocery store because this is mostly what’s near where we live and you’re not able get to a farmers market. (we try to get deals at the grocery store and farmers markets) Then I’d suggest do that. ..Such as shopping for produce (try for organic) meats (look for organic, grass fed, wild caught only, etc. if possible I know it’s expensive but it’s for better health) get ur plain yogurt, organic milks, etc. I’d say sticking to around that diet is best. It’s hard to do but like someone mentioned don’t go to the store hungry and focus on buying things to make meals. We don’t need snacks. Unless ur dr has you on a specific plan. By the time you have ur meals then ur cart will be full and left for no junk food. Of course we still get some ice cream here and there we still should “treat” ourselves but trust me once you stop buying all the junk you will feel better and never go back!!! Take it from someone that has an autoimmune condition that has to be picky in what I eat. Trust me you don’t want to have a chronic illness that comes up out of nowhere!!! I’m not saying that nutrition is the only factor but it’s the biggest one ☝️!i recently read a healthy body makes up 80% nutrition and 20% exercise with of course other things such as mindset, rest, less stress, etc… and so on.
Organic Butchers, organic markets: these are the only 2 places I do my groceries at (here in Europe). There are MANY THINGS, thanks to intermittent fasting and keto, THAT I NO LONGER LOOK AT, LET ALONE BUY. Life has become not only much healthier and lighter, but also less complicated. I always know what exactly I am buying and pay no heed to distractions, I.e. trash. Thank you Dr. Berg for having inspired me. 🙏✨🙏✨🙏
My biggest flex is that a million dollars spent on the psychology of a consumer purchasing junk and it does not work on me. 90% of my groceries are fresh produce, raw meat, and dairy products.
wow so much good info, and I guess don't trust the organic label either. My mother never bought us junk food, she went to the store just to buy meat and veggies for the day and used to buy me a yogurt which was my favorite the cherry kind, only one. Bless her heart, she was such a good mama. Mama rest in peace, I miss her so much 😢
For those of us lucky enough to have been a "Boomer", we remember going to the grocery store with our mom's in the 1950s. Grocery stores were small, a little larger than the size of one of the east coast Super Wawas, 7-11 or other convenience store. There was only real food. Maybe a basic Betty Crocker cake mix and an aisle for Colgate toothpaste, Halo Shampoo, Palmolive Soap and Ivory laundry soap. But that was it. I actually think Millennials just are a tiny bit envious of our life back in the day.
I'm a boomer and junk breakfast food took up a whole isle in the 50's, just like now. Also lots of canned goods, white bread, candy, basically the same junk food as now.
Kellogs always get the kids eye level space in UK. 🇬🇧 We are lucky to find an actual manned checkout till though, they expect us to do it ourselves with zero discount for doing their job for them. Kerching!
@@stevegwizzle3560 that's possible, some of our foods are not as bad as USA contains substances that are banned in UK. It's still trash and one of the worst possible food choices.
May be different where you are, but if you ask for a staff member to do their job, instead of being a slave, they’ll often open up a till. I’ve now stopped supporting the corporations that do that. We’re lucky to have an ‘independent’ supermarket chain. They are cash- and human- friendly. Also go to markets for fruit, veg, flour, pulses etc. It’s nice interacting with people who get to know you, and supporting small businesses rather than massive corporations where the ceo is paid an obscene salary.
Watch out for price change at the registers from the price on the shelves. This is the reason why stores went to putting prices on the shelves instead of the items. I almost got scammed at dollar general the other day. They all do this. I had to confront the clerk with these items and she changed the prices for me. I started just getting 10 to 15 items and starting marking the prices on them as I pick them up. If the prices aren't on the shelves or if the pricing is confusing don't get them. I refused items at the register because of this.
The end cap system can be faulted when they have Isles that are regular. If a person zig zags down the Isles, every second end cap is not walked by unseen.
I went into IKEA once and said never again. I felt like a rat in a maze!

Oh and I’m on no medications and still go out and chop my own firewood.
You buy things with an ingredient list?!!! LOL. You have a long way to go.

Yep.
90% of it is the non-food crap I’ll never buy again. I don’t even see it anymore, so it actually makes getting the real, good food easy and fast.
Likewise
Thanks to Dr Berg and others who are advocates of fresh foods.
Same here. The number of different stores I would go to is dwn to 1, HEB. I’m trying to add healthy weight and fats.
Fantastic video, Dr. My wife and I, stopped going to the food stores. We shop only via our local store APP and home delivery. We found out that by doing so, we dropped the weekly expense by 40%. It makes us shop only for what we really really need. I wish we thought about it before. I recommend all to try.
Wow, that's amazing. Thanks for the advice.

No canned veggies? Beans and rice? Pickled goods? Canned meats? Condiments? Raw baking ingredients? Teas?

Those rough floors are super annoying.
Fascinating.
I’m 55 and consume mostly red meat. I gave up processed foods and most sugar and carbs a few years ago. It was a game changer.
I feel and look much better.
I concur. Red meat seems to be the most filling and least inflammatory to my body.

Not a single one commenting on how unhealthy something like Arizona Iced Tea is, and if you try commenting on it, people tell you to STFU.
all Kellogg products are hostile to diabetics, shame on them.
When he said, people go and buy a lot of food before it snows thinking, they will die they will starve to death...and that never happens. On point! 🎯Especially in the South. 😂
Bread and Milk!😂
Beans and cornbread!
This is so true Dr Eric! The milk and eggs are always far in the back corner of the store… very tricky!
I have a college degree in retail and business management, I can add so much to what you have spoke about. One grocery store I worked at used 2 - liter soda pop as a loss leader. As a vendor, I utilized my knowledge of retail practices to increase route sales by twenty to twenty five percent.
They should put this Master lesson in all school programs around the world
This episode was so good , loved that he used images of himself at the store
I always think about how they have many aisles full of junk food, and a little section with fruits and vegetables somewhere in the corner
Hear hear
Great presentation! Public service that should have been done by our FDA to protect us. But they work for corporations.
They sure do.
Going to the grocery store when I am hungry and tired is almost the only time I am able to go into the grocery store. 😂
@@Noname-v2w5w exactly! It makes it harder to keep a running tally in my head because I have to remember if I've met their arbitrary number of items accepted! 😡
@@_7_bobby_7_platinum_7_. Drink a big glass of water before you shop.
Can I move in?
Same. The standards for organic in the EU are much tighter, so when you get organic anything at Aldi's, it's a better quality and a lower price.
You are a Great Role Model!
Respect 😃
Aldi foods in my opinion even though from Europe gets a lot of their foods from China.
@@gothtrini Exactly.Junk food
@@2022universallovethat worker should be fired or the manager allowing her to do that should be fired
yeah sure but let’s not act like he only saw that happen once by chance and it never happens again
My grocery shopping has changed significantly since I started IF and listening to this channel. ❤
They're not making me buy more groceries these days. I go in quickly, buy just what I need and leave. I can no longer casually walk through the store because I can not afford anything other than what I need to survive.
@ubacat1617 oh my word!!! That's utterly crazy. They're trying to ruin our Republic and make us vulnerable so they can rule with anarchy 😥
@ubacat1617😱
@ubacat1617 Lol, I wouldn't eat spaghetti sauce from a jar if you paid me $8 to take it home!
@ubacat1617spaghetti sauce is one of the easiest things to make
I dont think people realize how overstimulating the whole experience is too, for everyone.
It’s called MAKING A LIST.
@@P.e.m.a. There was a study a few years ago that found that when people are given too many choices, they often gave up and left empty-handed!
@@CjbrkBrooks i dont really understand this "solution."
A) how does a list fix looking at a shelf full of 500 options? How does having a list reduce the eye strain and mental fatigue of being in a store having to process constant data overload even though i know exactly where list items are?
B) How do you avoid being in a purchasing rut by not looking at other options? I get sick of buying the same stuff constantly, for YEARS on end, and want to try something else to salvage what remains of my sanity.
Having a list doesnt address the issues i brought up in the OP. List or not, the store looks and functions the same. The awful flickering lighting is the same. I can shop a list online and not have to deal with all the issues i mentioned. Especially the people.
There is definitely truth to this post. I can relate
Shopping online pick up is a good way to avoid these problems
My mom and dad never allowed us to eat cereal when we were kid, we either had egg or oatmeal with sliced banana or strawberries.
Same, when I realized all the real food is at the perimeter, I no longer shop the center of grocery store
Sometimes need some beans for chili 😀
there’s actually plenty of good food in the center. beans, rice, seasoning, oil, etc
zero sugar doesn't mean no sugar .
I go for No Sugar added
Always read the label. And then, read it again.
Yes.
I don't have a problem anymore when I'm shopping 😊
I've learned so much from you, and I'm sticking to the food I know is healthy.
Fish, turkey, chicken, vegetables, fruit, nuts and olive oil 😊
Only clean food for me
As this doctor is describing the set up of a grocery store. My mind is visualizing my grocery store. He is right on track.
Some products in plastic say “cook in bag” 🤣🤣🤣😭GROSS
Microwave popcorn, omg there must be so many chemicals coming off that super heated bag of oil that is lined with plastics or whatever it is. It's probably boiling so many chemicals into the hot oils.
@@VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM I always use my trusty popcorn popper, and add butter, olive oil, nutritional yeast, and salt.
Only low point is seafood, but we are in Nebraska.🤠
Just having a grocery store is a blessing out here.
But the reality is no one can really sustain such a high bad carb lifestyle for long… it just takes time for the body to catch up and the pancreas to slow down
I work as a Cashier for a major Grocery Chain. I will tell you how much crap people buy!! And then they complain about thier total amount due!!
And complain about how they feel like crap all the time or just generally look like death 💀

DNK if this is true, however it will be interesting for those who read labels.
This is easy: don’t shop at that scumbag place.
I see many shopping carts filled with not food ~ for growing children 😭
They’re designed to maximise sales through manipulating the customers to buy more

We in northern England, UK have an extremely popular discount store called “B & M”. It is quite shocking to see the economy (so-called) “food”, sodas and booze stacked up on their shelves…and how so many of my fellow countrymen absolutely love the place! I worry for the future health of their later years. Many are young families filling their trolleys up with utter junk…and raising their children on it.
its all about convenience and of course price

I always know what exactly I am buying and pay no heed to distractions, I.e. trash.

wow so much good info, and I guess don't trust the organic label either.

We also put eggs and milk AAAAALLLLLLLL the way in the back so you have to through the entire store
