It's clearly a combination of traffic and Antarctic ice. When ships go out to sea, the sea level goes up a bit so the tide comes in. When they stop at night, the sea level goes back down and the tide goes out. Add to that the slightly smaller effect of the sun melting the Antarctic ice in the morning, and freezing again at night, and there you have it: tides.

    1) Lack of knowledge isn't evidence that your beliefs are true

    • @richardharvey1732

Hi Four Deuce, I do think you are on the right track, among the random catalogue of heritable characteristics some of which clearly confer no real benefit but persist just because they are not totally life threatening. One of these might well be the propensity we have for indulging in cognitive delusion, if this has any biological function it could be that we are equipped with considerably greater mental talents than we actually need, the environment in which we live is not actually hostile. Most of us can life quite well and happily without ever having to apply any real rational thinking to anything!. The other biological mechanisms of desire and appetite are entirely adequate.
This leaves us in a situation where our over-supply of imagination and ability led us into rabbit holes of cognitive delusion that we can run down and try to explore, the fact that there is nowhere to go, no end no purpose or objective is totally ignored. The only evidence that is accepted is supporting evidence anything else is rejected as hostile or offensive.
One of the intriguing underlying features of such delusion is that the holder is unable to separate fantasy from reality, this in some part due to the assumption of identity which is a product of self-consciousness, we cannot tell the difference between what is in our heads and what is actually out there in the 'real' world, we do not even know for sure that there is one out there!.
This propensity for imaginative delusion then comes with the territory and for children just because it is so quick and easy compared to rational consideration it is the dominant characteristic. Then as time passes and it becomes increasingly clear that the world and your family does not always comply with your demands you have to choose, option one is they bare wrong and you are right and they must learn to comply with your desires because the=y are true and honourable, or you must choose to cut your suit according to the cloth you are given and learn to accept the need to adapt your desires to match 'reality'.
In my humble opinion far too many people take option one and try to live a life of prescription, applying some of that surplus energy to what really amounts to pushing water uphill!.
A life of purpose for sure but a futile purpose all the same!.
      Cheers, Richard.

At the same time I do think that much of the distress and frustration that people endure does arise from that internal debate from the contrast between desire and expectation and actual outcome, if you bare unable to edit and amend your script because it has no rational foundation to re-build from then all you have is your beliefs and emotional investment in them. From there it is but a small step to imagine that your difficulties are the consequence of malign agency and then you invent good and bad and enemies, since the ensuing battles are by definition unreal they are un-winnable but that does not stop people from endlessly fighting each other.

For those of you who blindly worship Michale Behe despite him making a fool of himself in the Dover case, here's something from the Rational wiki.
Behe shoots himself in the foot when he describes the predictions of ID. If the prediction of ID is that "in the absence of intelligent input, no such systems would develop", then an appropriate test would be to attempt to find a complex biological system that developed without intelligent input. But Behe claims all life had intelligent input and sees in it everything from flagellums to cats. So, where on Earth (or elsewhere) would one start to look? Has he even bothered trying to look for one? Given the size of our universe, Behe would have to do a lot of searching before he could confidently say his prediction had been confirmed. He would have to scour every atmosphere-bearing rock in the entire universe and probably double-check before he could say that no system has developed without intelligent input.

He is not a troll, this is his top floor when it comes to debating. Over the course of a decade of participating in the show, Luke has consistently demonstrated a limited capacity for constructing coherent arguments. It appears that his primary motivation for participating is to express his grievances regarding atheism. Why does anything have to mean anything? This ultimately goes back to the initial fallacy of the creator-god. Life looks designed. Ok, there must be a designer. Ok, that designer is god.
Life has form and function. There is no need to assume design, because Darwin and Wallace gave us the natural algorithm [natural selection] that explains how form and function changes over generations due to variations interacting with the environment.
The other problem with the creator-god is the causality violation. This can have several variations, like what "caused" god. Or the more basic one. If you are going to invoke god as a 'cause" then the god has to be demonstrated as existing FIRST.
Certainly, cognitive animals can have intent and purpose-but this is internally generated. People caused chairs is not a causality violation because we know people exist, and can make chairs.
Of course there is other rubbish in here too, like category errors. A watch and a chair is not in the same category as a living thing.
The extremely well demonstrated mechanism of natural selection, along with other evolutionary mechanisms, provide explanatory and predictive power to what we observe in the forms and functions of life.
Natural selection makes their god a 'fifth wheel". So they either deny NS outright, or don't accept its formative powers as sufficient. Same for natural abiogenesis. We don't know the fine details yet, but an entirely natural process is more than just likely. Life could have arose out of multiple pathways.
And the origin of the universe? pretty much the same sort of thing. Natural processes and interactions.
The other problem with the creator-god thing is that it is "top-down". If you can't demonstrate the thing at the top [god], you are done. Natural processes that we can identify are "bottom-up". Complexity become a natural, and emergent thing. More complexity, so more forms and functions.

Lying isnt a sin, under their God's morality, or maybe they can just ask for forgiveness as soon as he hung up. Or maybe Jesus told him to lie.
