The different manuals gave some nice points to get started when crafting your story/game. It definitely gives way for interpretation in order to borrow from for a story teller. I loved the story that MrRhrexx has crafted from the various stories and resources. I would consider this lore a must watch for budding Dungeon Masters who want to see how to incorporate material into stories while maintaining cohesion and interest. I can see how this could be easily made into several different stories which would be fun to read or play.
23:32 "That and the fact that Hags can only have daughters, never sons." Depends a bit on what books you choose to include or exclude. In 3.5e Unapproachable East they introduced the playable race called the Hagspawns. They are the male children of hags, half-human outcasts feared and hated by normal humans. They are big, strong and hardy, but sullen and ill-tempered. They carry much resentment inherent from their monstrous parent, which is often further made stronger by the distrust they receive from common people.
3.5e, male hag children ? Just make it a half fiend and change out their bonus character class level bonus spells to fit the theme. As for all of them being Neutral Evil, it is just so hard not to be that way. Check out AD&D Ravenloft: Van Richten guild to Hags. It is a must read.
@@Xargas Doppelgangers are cool but an evolutionary annoyance. Their categorisation as a monstrosity, like with an Ettercap makes little sense when they're humanoids, just of a monstrous type. They look alien-like yet can apparently be killed by normal weapons. Do they eat humans and other good beings or not? Their lore just says they prey on people by killing them to look like them at whichever point they choose, but don't go beyond why? How and why do they operate the way they do? I like them, but evolution/lore wise, they are profoundly unsatisfactory. Now an association with Hags-i.e. having them be the result of MALE children being birthed by Hags screwing male humans and Elves (not Dwarfs?), is an extremely sound idea, and one I'd adopt, which would explain many things, certainly why they're cursed to forever look weird, ugly and off-putting-forever doomed to never join the society they came from, yet only grab a part of it through stealth magic and subterfuge. It would explain their strong hit points, and also perhaps their only average intelligence and weak ability to grasp more than a victim's surface thoughts they need to emulate in looks in order to fit in to a society they can't naturally be a part of any more, which would explain further their ever-pressing need to 'fit' into society the only way they can-by disguising completely their utterly gross and subnormal visage and body, something surely only a Hag can be guilty of when seducing/raping a human or Elf male when the Hags themselves are in their illusory form.
Running Curse of Strahd, was dropping some hints of Devil involvement since they’d want this mass of souls trapped in the dread plane. Now I can say the night hags in the bone grinder had struck a deal with them aswell hehehe tonight’s going to be a fun session. Thanks for the video brother

This is prefect timing my dm is having the villains of the campaign I’m in be these ancient hags and have kidnapped this little girl that was supposed to be a witch. I think my dm is really gonna like this video!
Interesting, would this mean that this little girl be forced into a pact considering she's supposed to be a witch. So corrupting a girl into becoming a fiend pact witch(pact of the fiend warlock) would be something.
@Zachary Gadzinski well the little girl is a natural born wizard that has immeasurable potential so it’s me and my allies against the witches trying to get her cause she’s like a prophecy child or something. My character kinda just tagged along cause he’s a paladin and actually killed one of the witches last session and has a huge ass bounty on his head now amongst the the coven of witches
@@masenguerra7835 That sounds interesting. I'm interested in eventually playing D&D and when it comes to witches that aren't hags I instantly think of them in the same vein as warlocks. Given the assumption that the witch makes a pact like her male counterpart and isn't a hag.
When I watched this last year, you gave me an idea for a campaign that I just can't let go of, despite being a novice DM, and not writing my ideas down, aside by running it by my friends. Thank you.
I know right!, I am DMing the tomb for a group of friends [SPOILER ALERT!] I am seriously tempted to use the Night Hag coven the Swen Sisters in a much more ascertive manner, I already make them bully Nana Pu'pu in gathering blood and hair from anyone she come across, in exchange of "protection"; but the combination of the Etheralness trait and the nature of the tomb makes it so cruel just have 1 of them running around chasing the group!
Back in the late 90's and 2000's, I had a campaign where I used a very powerful Night Hag as traveling merchant who discovered a way to mold larva into magical items which she would sell to adventures, The stronger the magical item, the more larva she had to use to mold the item, It thought at the time it was a great way to allow the PC's every couple adventures to go through the Encyclopedia of Magicia and if they could afford the gold, they could acquire an item I didn't put into the campaign myself, of course, at the DM's discretion, She couldn't create one of a kind magical artifacts, items that would require intensive rituals, or something you wouldn't expect a group of that level to have found naturally while adventuring, I took in consideration of the creatures they defeated along the adventure and what magical items they might of found which was absent to try and balance it out somehow but everyone liked the idea of being able to have her mold them an item they could of gotten but didnt, as long as they had enough gold for the transformation, I could of done more with this NPC and was going to, but our adventuring group started breaking down because of real world stuff and never got to finish the campiegn,
This is one of the more informative videos. I never knew this about the hags. Whoever would of thought capitalism in the Forgotten Realms. Keep up the good work.
I always figured that, while Devils are certainly a threat to the multiverse, Demons are the far bigger danger, because Demons, while they can claim souls and turn them into more Demons, Demons can just as frequently spawn from nothing but the Chaos of the Abyss. So, if the Abyss was somehow wiped out at some point, the Devils would certainly be dangerous, but the forces of the upper plains would no longer have a reason to tolerate their existence and, in a combined effort, be able to ultimately wipe out the Devils. So, in my campaign settings, it's always the case that Asmodeus is purposefully keeping the Blood War going on forever, while he schemes to conquer the multiverse behind the scenes.
Ah yes, Ravel. What an absolutely fantastic character. Her assistance to The Nameless One via her many Avatars, was such a delicious twist on the storyline. Especially her provisions for helping him become skilled in Arcane magics. Finally meeting her real countenance was an epic reveal for me. "What can change the nature of a Man?". Such a multi-faceted question. Your own answer, depending on how you play, may surprise you in the end. :)
Now I want to make a campaign with a Lich as the BBEG just so that The players can go to the bazzar on hades and bump into him, and not be able to fight him cause the night hags won't tolerate it.
I love your long videow man! Especially this one! Hags are among my favorite D&D creature. Along with Dragons, particularly Chromatics, and Demons, Devils, especially the Lord, and Dukes. And also Undesd. The Liches and Death Knights are my favorites there! Trolls are pretty cool too! Basically, I love things that can cause TPKs, fairly easily!
Question: In another video you spoke about some vast plain of existence with one structure where souls wait to be claimed by their gods, tempted away by demons, or judged by Kelemvor, among other things. How do these larva souls fit in that concept?
I absolutely love these videos. You should look into epic level spells, there is a handbook for them from 3rd edition, and they are crazy! Either way, I always love learning more about these creatures and the lore crafted over the years. I wish I knew how to look for all the info, there must be hundreds of books to pour over! Keep up the amazing work!
I love how deep you research and the level of detail you share in your videos! It has helped me a lot in planning up my campaigns and been a real imagination boost! It's way easier to imagine new situations and ideas when hearing the information than to read it in my case, so please don't stop! You are an amazing help!
I am trying to DM with some friends and thank you for helping a adhd grown ass kid to be able to learn while working. Please keep up the great work. Be safe and always have fun.
I always love these particular videos, just got into 5e and seeing the differences that pop up between the 5e monsters and their 3.5 counterparts is always great. I would love to see you cover more fiends, like the Archdevils or the Demon Princes :D
You've helped me polish my campaign with these videos more than I can explain. This video especially has helped me figure a lot of things out. Thank you so much.
Another great one. Glad You have totaly recovered and back in a great style! I already knew most of the information You provided, but I loved to listen them from You @MrRhexx. Glad You mentioned that Charron was made by NightHags, and is the most powerfull of their creations. But If I good remember, he (it) is the only one who successfully breaks-off his slavery from Hags (and this is a secret Hags dint want to spread amongs the candidates to transform). Not only breaks its slavery pact, but also subdugated Hags to him. So much, that all Hags fear of him more then Asmodeus...
29:52 Your Mummy and Mummy Lords video was about two minuets longer, but I still enjoy this content. Thanks again for what you've found, and best wishes for the future!
No need to apologize for the video length. That in depth description and accompanying imagery was incredibly immersive to the point where it didn't seem long at all.
would love to see a video or afew video's explaining abit about the different alignments you as a player can take as you play through D&D campaigns, and what they mean logisticly.
The best part of this video is pointing out that the Altraloth is a CR 20+, made a coven of hags... This feels so much better storywise than just being like, "Yeah. There's a God working against your plans. Go beat them down." Mostly because I feel like even if the party defeats the Altraloth; they might not know that it was made by a coven of hags; or which coven specifically; and that another one might come for them someday.
If you're wondering how this makes sense in conjecture with other things that seem to directly contradict these things, that's not Mr. Rhexx's fault but the inconsistencies between editions or even within the same edition. F.e. taking just this video and his last, you may say that there's an inherent contradiction between 'All evil souls end up in hell as worms' and 'Souls go to the fugue plane to be judged, can be collected by their god (which includes the evil ones!) and those that aren't collected after 10 days are added to the blue mold wall.'. But wait, the fugue plane's system doesn't seem to feature any judgement based on alignment, as you're either accepted by your god or don't leave the plane ever, with devil bargains and demon raids as the exception. Even the most virtuous samaritan ends up in the wall if they were an an unfaithful samaritan, because if there's no worship required then surely some god short on souls would accept all the unwanted souls for themselves? Souls aren't judged nor punished for evil but for agnostic or atheistic behaviour, with assumption that the evil god punishing their followers for their evil acts. Which makes no sense, why would those evil gods want to be the destination no one wants to end up, just because the good gods want them to be this? If any evil god promises a cushy afterlife after a life of doing evil and whatever you will, they'd get all the worshippers. Welp, that's just the inconsistencies of the editions, both inter-editionally and internally. Especially in 5e, it's up to us DMs to decide what we like best and how we use it. Remember, Mr. Rhexx gives us the 1-4e lore on the topic as best as he can, but it's still up to us to choose the finest cuts and our own preferred takes from it. Because after 5 editions and a lot of inconsistencies, we simply cannot do D&D lore right because it will always contradict itself in some regards. My personal take on night hags would be to combine the two: The souls of powerful evil beings that have a god that would take them, is stolen by the night hags so it never goes through the fugue plane to be claimed. Never too beloved to earn them the god's ire, but if it would make for a good sale then they will do it. So especially evil people that recently rejected their evil god should worry, for if a night hag sniffs them out then they are quickly snatched up while they're still free picking. And for 5e's good souls, I'd homebrew lore that this is the devils now having made a deal with night hags that any good-aligned and faithful people that made a devil pact with their soul to be collected upon death, will see a night hag kill them and claim their soul to be sold to the devils without going through the fugue plane and create an issue if their good god would get there first or contest their claim.
Disregard 5e. I am old school with AD&D2e "Planescape" box set campaign setting. If the character, "npc/pc." was not super align , they just end up in the Out Lands. They could be thousands / billions of miles from the nearest Gate Town. Let's go with Lawful Evil, it is easier to work with. a.) commoner, stay at home type, treated others like crap cause they could get away with it do to society rules. Lip service to the gods. They wake up after death in the Out Lands only with their grave goods," the clothes on their back. Few personal items." b.) Urban / shopkeeper, soldier. Strong sense of duty, treat others like crap cause they had the social class/ rank to do so. No true faith. They end up in a Gate Town of their alignment. They wake up after death with their grave goods. c.) adventures, life on the road. A contract is a contract. i.) contract: by the letter and not the spirit. "If I don't like how the job is working out. It says right there I can cut and run." .. Out Lands. ii.) contract: by the spirit and not the letter, " well you see if blah, blah, blah.." Gate Town. iii.) You just end up on the first layer of Baator. You did a lot of bad things in life, but you were not a monster. " you are still you." with grave goods. iv.) You were a monster in life and now you are a monster in the after life. 2.) Characters take 3 to 7 days to show up after they die in the Out Planes. Raise dead vs corps rot. Characters that die in battle together with the same alignment end up together after death. " no reason to break up a party after they were killed by dragon fire, or goblins."
I would think Charon would have a say about entities taking souls to the underworld. Because that would be subverting his authority and responsibilities. He is the Ferryman.
I’m developing a homebrew witch class which thematically and mechanically lies somewhere in between wizards, druids, sorcerers, and warlocks. The subclasses are covens, at least two of which will be based on hags, namely the Green Coven and Night Coven. So, these videos will hopefully help me in creating features.
It's interesting for me that night hags used to be of the "feywild," which I'm assuming is elfdom, and they can straddle a mortal's body to create nightmares. The older German word for nightmare is Albtraum or "Elf Dream," where legend would have it a nightmare was made when an elf sat upon your head at night.

Honestly I’d love a whole video on yugoloths, they’re super cool and underrated imo
23:32 "That and the fact that Hags can only have daughters, never sons."
Depends a bit on what books you choose to include or exclude.
Aren't there also Dopplegangers too?
@@Nionivek Doppelgangers are a thing, but I don't think they are associated with hags? I could be wrong though
Now we also have hexblood - mortals, enchanted by a hag in childhood, capable and usually desiring to become one.
This is what I love. In depth lore breakdowns delivered by a passionate charismatic lore expert. Keep it up good sir!
Running Curse of Strahd, was dropping some hints of Devil involvement since they’d want this mass of souls trapped in the dread plane. Now I can say the night hags in the bone grinder had struck a deal with them aswell hehehe tonight’s going to be a fun session. Thanks for the video brother
Bro I LOVE these D&D lore videos. I WISH they were longer lol. I wish these videos ran at least 45 minutes to an hour. They're great listening material while you do stuff around the house and it's just cool to hear all these facts on D&D creatures and God's and shit. LONGER VIDEOS WOULD BE AMAZING. Just sayin..
stfinalwrath I love all of MrRexx’s videos but if you ever want another perspective with lots of lore i’d recommend ‘The Mighty Gluestick’ as his DnD videos are of similar style and quality, not a paid sponsor i promise lol! i love both channels! just recommending another good dnd content creator
These are some of my favorite dnd videos. I absolutely love these in depth lore drops
When I watched this last year, you gave me an idea for a campaign that I just can't let go of, despite being a novice DM, and not writing my ideas down, aside by running it by my friends. Thank you.
I'd like to see you do the kobolds from the beginning of d&d to now.
“Instead what happens is _anime ad_ .”
Hmm. Weirdly fitting...
Perfect placement of publicity.
"What happens when you go to hell IS"
Uber adds showing UP...
This makes me wonder about how the events of tomb of annihilation effect the lower planes
I know right!, I am DMing the tomb for a group of friends [SPOILER ALERT!]
I am seriously tempted to use the Night Hag coven the Swen Sisters in a much more ascertive manner, I already make them bully Nana Pu'pu in gathering blood and hair from anyone she come across, in exchange of "protection"; but the combination of the Etheralness trait and the nature of the tomb makes it so cruel just have 1 of them running around chasing the group!
Dude, make them as long as you can. This lore is so fun to listen to.
Great video. I'm looking forward to Green Hags; I'm using one in an upcoming adventure that I'm really excited to run/roleplay.
Actually, the wicked in the Abyss spawn as manes. In Hell, it's the lemure.
Never apologize for the length of your videos! I really appreciate that you go so in-depth thank you so much!
This video reminded me about the night hag in planescape torment, I always wanted to know more about her race, thankyou :D
Perfect for this spooky day!
Basically, I love things that can cause TPKs, fairly easily!
i was just writing a night hag into my campaign so this video is perfectly timed
You have such a solid channel, I can't really sum up the respect I have for these consistently fascinating deep-dives across decades of material
Absolutely one of your top 10 works! You put in so much detail and cross references to compile this together, it's wonderful!
I am trying to DM with some friends and thank you for helping a adhd grown ass kid to be able to learn while working. Please keep up the great work. Be safe and always have fun.
This was a great video going into detail on the night hag! Now I have a lot more to use as I wanted to get into using them
No way this was too long, this was perfect!
Thanks for the longer video! Always appreciated.
Amazing video. Genuinely. You go through some SERIOUS research for these things. Props and keep up the good work, I love your d&d videos so so much!!
29:52
Your Mummy and Mummy Lords video was about two minuets longer, but I still enjoy this content.
Thanks again for what you've found, and best wishes for the future!
You make very comprehensive guides in all your videos and I am grateful for it.
No need to apologize for the video length. That in depth description and accompanying imagery was incredibly immersive to the point where it didn't seem long at all.
would love to see a video or afew video's explaining abit about the different alignments you as a player can take as you play through D&D campaigns, and what they mean logisticly.
This video actually gave me the perfect plot point for a Dread Domain campaign I've been trying to craft off and on for the past year.
this was insane! I had not expected to acquire this wast amount of dnd lore and information from what seemed to be a simple night hag video.
I love long lore vids keep em coming, this is really entertaining.
The best part of this video is pointing out that the Altraloth is a CR 20+, made a coven of hags... This feels so much better storywise than just being like, "Yeah. There's a God working against your plans. Go beat them down."
Mostly because I feel like even if the party defeats the Altraloth; they might not know that it was made by a coven of hags; or which coven specifically; and that another one might come for them someday.
After the characters take down a Boss and are near death, send at them a few dozen imps to attack them. And have them be capture.
I’ve been wanting to add hags to a campaign for a while, thanks for the info
If the character, "npc/pc." was not super align , they just end up in the
Out Lands. They could be thousands / billions of miles from the nearest
Gate Town.
Let's go with Lawful Evil, it is easier to work with.
a.) commoner, stay at home type, treated others like crap cause they could get away with it do to society rules. Lip service to the gods. They wake up after death in the Out Lands only with their grave goods," the clothes on their back. Few personal items."
b.) Urban / shopkeeper, soldier.
Out Lands.
ii.) contract: by the spirit and not the letter, " well you see if blah, blah, blah.."
Gate Town.
iii.) You just end up on the first layer of Baator.
The thing i love about medieval music is that even studying feels epic
I dont think this video was overly long at all. I come to you for all these nearly forgotten details, the more the better!
I would think Charon would have a say about entities taking souls to the underworld. Because that would be subverting his authority and responsibilities. He is the Ferryman.
Not in D&D. In D&D he only takes living or unliving creatures across the Styx, not the souls themselves.
Wow, one of your best videos to date. Well done. Please keep up this amazing work.
Your videos are GOLD for anyone who loves D&D. Congratulations from Brazil, keep up the good work!
This video is not on the playlist. Just telling you in case it was overlooked. Thank you for the great work! Love these videos!
Hey! I am on campaign where I was raised by a Annis Hag, and my character is Hag themed, and I really liked the two hag videos you did. Waiting for the next hag themed videos.
This is truly amazing stuff right here! Every time I watch your videos I get so many ideas for campaigns of my own and it's so informative on little perks and info that would be overlooked!
Please don’t apologize for making a super long video. In my opinion, it’s even better. More content for us, which you were passionate about making. Win-win. Love the longer videos. Thank you
THANK YOU for listing the sources used! Huge help!
Thanks for this awesome video! I am currently preparing CoS and this background info for hags is pure gold!!
ahh i miss these videos, I like watching these to feel motivated to create my own campaigns using info given
Dude you could make a 4 hour long video and I would watch it in full since you fill the videos full of great lore.
I prefer the long form stuff. It allows for so much more context. It’s awesome!!
1:18
I know that stone. That is *rainbow obsidian* polished into a heart shape.
Dude, this just gave some crazy twist to my current campaign!!! Thanks!
I keep coming back to this video since it is my favourite one of all of them
Holy crab that was awesome! Only thing I was missing was more about the bargins/deals they make. It's a thing I in general miss from the MM. There might be very basic examples of bargins, but not what happens if it's not kept.
You do such a good job summarizing DnD lore and I really love your videos! Keep up the good work!
It would be cool to see an atmosphere based show on D&D. concepts like a land that slowly drains color would be really neat to see for an episode.
Extraordinarily thorough you are and thank you for it.
Never ever apologize for a long video. This was awesome.
Such a great video. I enjoy these lengthier videos! Give us moar information!!!! It’s such a joy to learn about DnD while I’m at work. I can listen to you for hours and often times go back to already watched videos for my DnD campaigns. I primarily play 2nd edition and I’m ecstatic that you include info from previous editions! Cheers to you sir! Happy Halloween!
2nd edition is by far the best source of lore, they really did a great job back then.
I love that you are going over hags! I can't wait for you to go over the annis hag!
