Musique sublime ,magnifiquement interprétée !!! Splendide mise en scène !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( contrairement à certaines productions actuelles ,complètement ridicules et" déjantées" ,y compris à Bayreuth !!!!) .....
I have tried hard to like this production - I saw it live and I have it on DVD - but it seems to me to be quite monumentally silly. Every detail is faithfully reproduced from Wagner's first production but it adds up to very little. The characters don't come to life, they are cyphers, the drama it unfolded storybook fashion and I don't know any more about this great work at the end than I did at the beginning. It's the best example I can think of to illustrate why we must always develop new ways of directing these works. I have seen 19 live Ring cycles over the years and this is the only one so far which leaves me cold.
I appreciate your impression of this production. I am surprised you dislike it as compared to newer interpretations. I find the stage setting genius, beautiful and awe inspiring. I too, have seen modern versions of Wagner, one which featured the characters as sort of extraterrestrials as I vaguely recall. Anyway, this version to me is stunning. Hildegard Beherens was commanding, the Water Nymphs swimming in the Rhine in joyful reunion with the return of the gold was a feat of shear beauty. The beautiful nymphs actually looked as though they were in water! Yes, I prefer the traditional, original vision of Wagner himself to the strange "reimagined" sequels we see floating around today.
Hildegard Behrens adorée
