      @cgi2173 yeah, TH-cam said I’d finally caught up with all the comments that I’ve missed in the last few years… they lied they gave me more comments to respond to from 2 1/2 years plus back and I can’t stand to have pending comments 🤣 and now with those glass I don’t even use a suction cup. I just grab it and pray it doesn’t snap in half when I pull it off. 🤣

    I would suggest use that card, since if will fit perfect with the 21,5 models..

    Thanks for the vid with all the details. I recently inherited one of these and was thinking of doing this. I'm so glad you did this before I did. I'm pretty used to blank-screen boots since my Pro 1,1 doesn't show anything with my old 5770 or the (cool/quiet) GT 710 I have in it now. With all the problems debugging drivers and booting, my first thought is to pull the storage from the iMac so that it will default to booting from an external drive or target-mode mac, debug everything, and then put the drive back in. Do you think that would work?

    • @HrutkayMods
      @HrutkayMods  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m thinking really the easiest thing would be is if you can boot off of a thunderbolt drive especially a thunderbolt SSD... I might do that in the future

      Hrutkay Mods , thank you! Anyway I did it!! and is a little be complicated. I installed Catalina, I asked you about it because is important for your followers? Because I think for somebody is going to change their system with a Metal support card need to install in the new drive the patch with the corrections about the details and how to patch this new OS X like unchecking legacy video support and other details? Because what I can do with a new GPU If I cannot install the new “OSx “ ? I explained the same thing to “Macintoshmen”?, and I give you my opinion because I feel your channel is better, so thank you man!!

    Thank you so much for this! I've been looking at a Unibody iMac on Luke Miani's suggestion and I like how easy they appear to be to work on. But the "no Metal" thing is giving me second thoughts. I just wanted to see if it could be done. Now you're here telling me "Yeah, but..."
    I already have a MacBookPro9,2 that I'm struggling to keep up to speed.
    I want a desktop system to take a lot of the processing load off my MacBook.
    I want to fix up computers because I like to. I don't want to do it because I have to.
    I'm now going to start looking for a Slim Unibody iMac. They'll be more expensive and trickier to work on but I really do want to try keeping it up to date as long as I can.
    I started all this with an old MacBook1,1 I was given. I gave up on that one when I bought this MacBook Pro new, specifically so I could run Mavericks. I still have a PowerBook 520 "Blackbird" that I built from scraps, so I agree old Macs can be fun. But I'm looking for a desktop workhorse to free up my MacBook Pro for portable use while it's still somewhat viable.
    For tinkering, I still have our old PowerMac G4 dual-450 "Gigabit Ethernet" (PowerMac3,3) in the garage. This was our daily driver for almost ten years and I'd like to get the old bird going again. Thanks for the reminder about Low-End Mac. I completely forgot about them!
    I can't wait to hear more about your meeting with the bodybuilder and the Apple genius!!

I upgraded it form High Sierra to Mojave using another iMac (because we don’t have EFI boot using 765m), but when I put the SSD with the Mojave upgrade back to may Mac with 765m video card and turn it on I got just a black screen. I wait minutes but nothing happens. On High Sierra wait 2 minutes and works perfectly like yours. Did you manage installe Mojave with this 765m video card?

    • @HrutkayMods
      @HrutkayMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand only the 27 inch supports external display over thunderbolt and only one port works after the upgrade. It’s been a while since I’ve played with the system I don’t remember if the brightness works or not. And the boot screen is possible if you flash the card there is a lot of viable card flashes out there now.
      Basically any Kepler card you can find should be more powerful than the factory cards

After watching this video I feel 110% confident this will be no issue. I am concerned about thermals and may research small fans and new pads for the MXM. I used your tutorial as a guideline to upgrade an iMac 2011 27'' with a GTX 980m from an Alienware 17'' Laptop. Outcome is that the card is fully recognized when I'm using the screen share function, also under remote desktop in Windows 10, but I have constantly a black screen. Means the internal screen is not working. Using an external monitor I did not test but I assume it should work, thats not the initial purpose though. Means in case somebody wants to try out a GTX 980m as replacement for their AMD GPU, just don't do it. I personally think that the GTX 780m is the best option for now. Maybe we will get something better in the future. Until then have a good one...and nice channel!

    Pinned at the start of this (Very) long thread is a list of compatible cards and the functionality levels of each of them. Most importantly, the list shows the current status of vbios workarounds for each card and how to go about flashing them - some are already good to go and others will have updated workarounds soon. I guess it would be possible to get the boot screen back using rEFInd and OpenCore as bootloaders. Pretty much the same that is now possible with Mac Pros and non-Apple GPUs. I have a Mac Pro 3,1 that i replaced the GPU for a PC card, normally i would lose anything boot related but by installing rEFInd and OpenCore in any EFI partition, the GPU is initialized and the rEFInd menu appears. That should work with a GPU modded iMac? I don't see why not.

On the 21.5 if your imac has the correct cpu like an i5 you can upgrade to the i7 2600s cpu with no issues. taking that board out is tricky asf audio cables get in the way for the left memory slot. Greg, I posted this on another related video earlier and I think this may be an answer to your problems getting the card to run without problems...
    On the subject of GPU upgrades, I have seen threads online that mention that Apple GPU BIOS files are available to download. Using a "Raspberry PI", you can flash a GPU card so that the imac will recognise that card as whatever BIOS you flashed it as. This will give you the boot screen, brightness controls etc. The problem is, I've only seen BIOS for the apple cards up to and including the Radeon 6970 2GB graphics card. If you want a GPU with higher specs than that AND you want the boot screen etc, then you somehow need to get a BIOS file for one of the later Apple cards. I know there was at least one macbook pro from 2018 that had an 8gb card - if someone can get a download of that BIOS then that would open up a whole range of possible GPU upgrades!
    In your case Greg, you could flash that 2gb card with the bios of the Radeon 6970 card so that imac thinks its got a 6970 instead of a GTX 765M. You'll still have 2GB of GPU ram and you'll have the boot screen etc. The problem will be that you probably won't have Metal support... unless you can find a gpu card taken from a later imac or macbook pro.

    • @HrutkayMods
      @HrutkayMods  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s not that simple if you flash the AMD bios into the card it will just kill the card... trust me if it was possible I would do it... someone has to come up with a custom Nvidia flash

    Awesome video man! I remember reading your comment in response to Luke Miani and am very happy that you actually followed through! Having said that, quick question... I read this post here www.ifixit.com/Story/18646/Successful_iMac_Upgrade_to_GTX_880M which successfully installed an 880M. Is there anything I need to look out for? To my understanding some 800 series are kepler. Is there a way for me to confirm this before making a purchase? And would the card need to come from an alienware/dell machine or simply be compatible within one of those? Do you anticipate that I'd have to do anything differently from your tutorial? I would go with a cheaper card but i figure if i'm going to attempt this upgrade I'd like to maximize performance. Thank you in advance.

      Yeah the 880M I hear is Kepler. Believe it or not the easiest way to figure out which ones are Kepler it is by looking it up on Wikipedia... they have a huge list of the different chips... if the model identifier number starts with GK it’s a Kepler. I don’t quite know how the 800 series Kepler cards work... but I would say they would work fine with or with out web drivers... I know the 780M works for sure just to let you know... also I think the 870M is a Kepler... but like I said check on Wikipedia... also remember these cards have higher TDPs so you’ll need a more aggressive fan curve to keep everything cool especially since you won’t be able to actually see the temperature the GPU is running at... but you can monitor the heat sink temp sensor... it will give you a ballpark range... good luck and I would love to hear the results you have with it

      Hrutkay Mods hey again alright ordered a 765m from eBay. Hello
      I was told it only runs on High Sierra and newer osx.
      Since I was on El Capitan 10.11.6 I moved the kext lib to make the mac start using the integrated intel card... Well its not really a disable but good enough to get it to start osx and upgrade to high sierra from app store.
      After it downloaded/ restarted and getting ready for the install it just keeps staying on the grey startup page with the apple logo... nothing happens - waited more than a hour. And I am connected to a wifi.
      Now I am consedering if its because that new installer is trying to use the Real amd gpu since I dont asume the installer dmg is looking into the osx on the harddisc that I moved the amd kext extentions.
      What other options do I have.... find another mac that I can install the high sierra from if I put the imac in target diskmode maybe?
      Many thanx

    Hi, Hrutkay Mods
    Have you already test it with the Mojave?
    Where is actually the danger at Mojave installation?
    That means, if I have bad luck, then I can't start my computer anymore?
    Or does he not start anymore without bootscreen?
    Can't I go back to High Sierra afterwards?
    regards

    just asking if an iMac 20" 2008 has a separate GPU to if so what kind, please.

    So if we can’t get the boot screen and can’t choose the start drive, could we use a WTG which already installed the drive for the GPU and so, start from System Preferences and afterwards we just remove the WTG and the Mac will just start normal? I am thinking about upgrade my iMac too but I can’t give up windows because I do a little bit gaming on windows. XD

      Well if The OS X partition is the main one, you can just do the NVRAM reset to boot back in

      @@HrutkayMods Hi Thank you very much for your video, I just degraded my iMac 21.5' 2011 with a i7-2600s and a GTX680m, the system works but I found out that the 680m is running poorly, it may due to the high power demand of the gpu which is 100w, 65Watts more than the original 6750m... and that caused the cpu also doesn't have enough power to get higher performance. I'm thinking about to change the card to the 765m which you are using, it may get better performance with 25w less TDP. Or do you think the Quattro K2200M will work on the 21.5' iMac?
