      @@iRevive maybe you could toss this into the video or description or something. there are TWO cables that fit the same on the logic board. the HDD fan and CPU fan cable are identical in fit. My HDD cable got caught and bent to a point that it looked like it *should* connect to the CPU fan cable. the CPU cable fell down and was hiding.
      Your video walked me through disassembly and putting it all back together. I heat gunned the GPU to confirm that everything is working so that I can decide on what replacement GPU im going to toss in. ugly business all things considered. Taking apart an iMac isn't super difficult but it is not for the feint of heart either.

    My iMac broke and I tough I bring it to apple and they would look at it and tell me what is wrong with it. They said to me its vintage and ready for the bin. I was like wtf you mean vintage? 10 years for a high end iMac! They must be joking but no they wouldn't even look at it. But thanks to you I fixed it myself. I know its 10 years old, but the i7 3.2Ghz and 2Gb video is still amazing in 2021, still manage to edit en do all stuff I need to do with it! I love the iMac 2011!.

    Thanks a lot for your great video - it encouraged and helped me to get my iMac 21.5" end-2009 back to life. In 2015 it "died", I took it to a repair shop, they confirmed a graphics card defect and wanted 400€ for a replacement without warranty. I didn't let them do the repair, kept the dead iMac and bought a cheap PC for the daily office work. Let's call it a "Corona-project", I took out the graphics card and baked it for 10 minutes at 200°C in the oven - I had nothing to loose - and it really worked!! On that occasion I also replaced the hard drive with a rather old 160GB SSD drive which I had used in my 2008 MacbookPro 15". This machine also died because of graphics card problems! However, thanks again for your video!

    Update on 29 November 2021: I received the rebuilt GPU and it works great! While I had the iMac apart, I blew out all of the accumulated dust (which was a lot), replaced the BR2032 battery, and replaced the thermal paste on the main CPU with Arctic MX-4. The original thermal paste was now non-thermal gunk but cleaned up very well. Most of it fell away when I separated the heatsink from the CPU. I also installed the free version of Macs Fan Control so I could monitor the temperature and adjust the speed of the three fans. I have them set to run at 1500 RPM, but they will increase as required to meet the heat load. I hope to have a few more years of life out of this iMac before I replace it on my terms!!!
    Excellent tutorial and a big thumbs up! The GPU in my Late 2009 iMac just gave up the ghost and I was going to send the iMac to the reclamation yard before I saw your video. I think it is easier to find unicorn tears than the replacement graphics card, but I found a service in Germany that will refurbish the GPU by replacing the processor and the thermal paste for about €140, which includes a one-year warranty. I send them the complete GPU, with heatsink attached, and three days later I receive my GPU back ready to install. I was tempted to try the oven bake, but for this amount, I don't want to bother and risk desoldering the components on the board. This makes it easy to kick that can down the road for another few years before I replace the iMac.

    Thank you so much for such a well-done video. My GPU on my mid-2011iMac died. The previous GPU died two years ago, so I had the Apple store replace it for about $500. Of course, now this model is obsolete, so I'm pretty much on my own. Which is a good thing, considering design/manufacturing flaws of these video cards, I wouldn't pay Apple another $500 repair for such terrible reliability. Therefore, I baked my GPU in hopes of being one of the lucky ones to get another couple of years out of it. In the meantime, I ordered a new, non-Apple AMD Radeon HD 6970 2GB from China, that has supposedly been flashed to make it Apple compatible... Desperate times/desperate measures. I followed along with your video to do the the teardown, thermal pasting of the CPU and my freshly baked video card (by the way, the Apple store knuckleheads did not apply enough thermal paste to the VRAM; in fact, it looks like they applied the paste to the heat sink; when I cracked the GPU heat sink open, there was just a tiny amount of paste on a couple of the eight VRAM chips, while the heatsink had mostly unmated, undisturbed thin layer of paste above the VRAM chips). I appreciated you saying something about the battery. As my machine is eight years old, I figure since I'm in there, I might as well replace the battery. But I couldn't figure out how to get the battery out without the help of your video (the old battery was down to 2.75 volts. Before I put the LCD screen back on, I turned on the machine and looked at the four LEDs on the logic board. I had 1, 2, and through lighted, which was a sign that the GPU was communicating with the logic board. Then I turned off and unplugged the machine, installed the LCD with a couple of screws, plugged it back in and restarted. Voila!

    Thank you very much. Finally found someone that explains and shows how to repair this computer properly. What took me to repair my imac 27 i5 2010 was that it would start normally and at half the way it shuts down. My guess is that is the hard drive, since it has been shooing some problems. But I m not shure now if it is not the graphics card. I ll be unmountig my imac, change the thermal paste and dust it off. I hope it works, because this still is a great computer. Thanks again, and you did a great job. Best regards from Portugal.

    • @iRevive

      Being that your model is a 2010 iMac, if the hard drive has not been replaced, it more than likely is going bad due to old age. What I would recommend is seeing if you can boot into safe mode by holding the left shift key while the computer boots.

    Great video. For DIY kind of people it can be absolutely helpful.
    However, as I personally pulled out gpu on my imac, i have to say there is no need for removing logic board completely. It's ok for examining and cleaning cpu vent for example, or check of cpu/termal paste, or changing button battery br2032. But, gpu is actually easy for remove without mainboard removal.
    Just don't forget to remove small cable which is plugged at bottom/inside side on mainboard BEFORE pulling gpu out from (still attached) mainboard/logicboard.
    And also, it's important when removing display to be careful with removing 4 cables attatched on it, first one (at the upper left side of computer) is extremely easy to damage. Just don't pull display to much, do it slowly until you see (small) amount of space you have to work in.
    So my algorithm for this is: 1. pull out small cable from logic board. *it's a bit tricky to put it back when reassembling, but if you are focused and not nervous, it will save much time vs taking out whole logic board. 2. unscrew three screws which hold heatsink shield fixed onto mainboard, loosen small screw close to screw that holds heatsink fixed onto computer frame/housing, and then unscrew this second screw. 3. pull gpu with heatsink and shield completely out. Be careful, pull the shield a bit up (so it won't scratch logic board), pull heatsink a bit up, and than pull it all out (into upper computer orientation). I put it back in reverse order. If you have big hands and fingers, you might need 90degree precise pliers to put small cable back.

    • @iRevive
      @iRevive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your feedback. I was unaware of the ability to remove the GPU with out the logic when I created this video. Fortunately, people have discussed in the comment section that you can save time by removing just the GPU by loosening up some screws. It’s a neat method. Like you said, removing the entire logic board does have its benefit to replace thermal paste while the device is open. But if you only need to replace the GPU, then there are methods to remove the GPU only without pulling the board. I’m not sure, however, if all A1312 models can have just the GPU removed.

    A well put together and thoughtful video. However there is no need to remove the power supply, or the fan or the super drive. I have worked on a lot of these iMacs and the logic board comes out without removing any of the aforementioned parts. In fact on the 2009, 2010 iMacs you can remove the GPU without removing the logic board at all. In the case of the 2011’s you do have to remove the logic board, as the screw heads on the GPU heat sink are behind the logic board, not so with the 2009, 2010.

    • @iRevive
      @iRevive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have heard of these methods before. I personally have not attempted to remove the GPU without removing the logic board on 2009 or 2010 models. Someone in the comments pointed me to a video with someone performing this method and I was rather impressed. You are also correct about not having to remove the power supply of super drive fan. I find it easier to remove and reassemble the logic board with these out of the way. But you can still perform the repair with the PSU and fan still installed. Thank you for sharing this information. This is how our industry gets better, by people sharing tricks and tips to helps others with repairs.

    Thanks so much man for this video! When my graphics card on my mac died in 2016 I took it to Apple and they said that the card by itself would cost me £700. They told me it was best to give up and buy a new computer. The nerve! So I just abandoned my computer in the garage for the next 4+ years until a few days back when I was off work and decided to have a go at fixing it. Then your video came up and it looked so professional which is why I followed it. I ordered a used graphics card and MX 4 paste from Ebay and now my computer works great. It's fast because it has 32GB Ram and an SSD, so I hope it can cope for the next few years. Also, now I can mention "thermal compound" during a conversation with my friends and immediately sound very smart😂. Thanks man!

Anyway at the end I had to remove Big Sur and go back to supported High Sierra because the machine was just not stable, too many crashes and there were some sound issues in Windows inside Parallels. Now the worst has happened and I am back to square one: the card I put in was not new and today the machine started flickering while I was using it. I shut it down and when I tried to reboot it the pink vertical lines appeared and it wont boot into MacOS. The card is gone again, right? I want to buy a new one from China this time via eBay but before I do that I wonder if you have ever heard of the oven trick where you put the card into the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes and it bizarrely fixes it? Any thoughts on that?

    I know that this video is for the 2009 iMac so the safety precaution below is pretty much OT but maybe food for thought
    As per the iMac mid 2011 service manual
    (Page 139) Re the LED backlight board for the 2011 iMac: If the computer is shut down by removing the power cord, allow the backlight board a good 2-3 minutes to discharge the capacitors before handling it. However, if you select “Shut Down” via the Apple menu, the computer will discharge the capacitors almost immediately.
    (Page 16) Re Power Supply PCB: If the computer is shut down by removing the power cord, allow the power supply a good 2-3 minutes to discharge the capacitors before handling it. However, if you select “Shut Down” via the Apple menu, the computer will discharge the power supply capacitor almost immediately.

    • @iRevive
      @iRevive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These Power supplies can be dangerous. It is best to allow the capacitors the discharge. Another way to force the caps to discharge is by removing the power cable from the iMac and holding the power button for a few seconds. It is best to avoid touching any components on the power supply as much as possible. I recommend holding the PSU by its edges away from any components or any obvious exposed traces.

    Was running Ventura with all updates via Open Core Legacy Patcher on exactly this late 2009 27" iMac (10,1), with the ATI Radion 4850 and the latest patches (thanks to Mr- Macintosh and the whole team of Mac-Heads), upgraded ist a few years ago to 12 GB RAM (non-Apple RAM), a 1 TB SanDISK SSD drive, Mac Fan Control installed and set the "HDD" ventilator to manual 2.000 rpm, as the SDD had no temperature sensor. Worked good, some minor hassle with the non-metal graphics still. But, really good for more years.
    But yesterday I got the "Stripes go Death" and the system won't boot. Even re-installing the OS, trying backups from Time Machine, first-aid of the disk utlility manager, clearing SCM and so on... didn't work. I had to hardly learn that, obviously, my GPU / graphic card got fried. I remember I was trying 4K option for a TH-cam video lately, then switched to like "2K" which was running fluently again, just for a test. Normally it's set to the "auto" option. But as the creator of this video said: "This model cannot run 4K. It will try but eventually destroy the graphic card." And it did. Very sad. :( That masterpiece of a computer has been mine for 14 years (!) now and still had a super bright and clear 27" screen, not wasting too much energy and, with the help of Open Core Legacy Patcher, was able to run the most actual macOS and all it's security standards.
    I am thinking of buying a new ATI 4850 graphic card to get the iMac back to life again. But I am not much of a technician and I am afraid, I will never get those parts together again. Nor do I want to spend like $400 for the repair of a 14 year old computer system. Maybe I will sleep over it and make a decision. Really don't wanna let my trusty friend iMac go.

    This was a fantastic video. I have a mid-2011 3.1 GHz i5 with a seemingly failing AMD 6790 (one day the computer shut down and I was presented with the dreaded vertical green lines when trying to restart). I tried my attempt at the graphics card “bake”, which resulted in the computer chiming to a black screen. The LED test only shows the first two lighting up. I am trying my hand at a graphics card replacement but have a question about paste: Do you know anything about KP4 and KP5? The KP5 I used was much more “clay” like so I am wondering if I should just switch to the Arctic Silver MX-4 and use on all VRAM. This is good information to know for future reference. I was unaware. To be honest, I never use the built in Apple Diagnostics since it doesn't really give detailed reports and in some cases gives false negatives. I can only think of 1 time the the built in Apple Diagnostics helped me and that was to help me determine that a client installed the wrong RAM speed into the 2015 5k iMac. Outside of that one time, I find it faster to use other diagnostic methods. That is just my past experience with Apple diagnostics.

When I push the power button it sounds as if the comp is waking from sleep stand...that typical noise. I do hear the fans working in the computer when trying to reboot, but nothing further happens. Hi.I have a iMac 27” I have had the computer for nine years the cover screen is held on by magnets.The problem I have is when powered up the start up sound comes on but the screen stays black (nothing at all) if you give can give some advice...I would appreciate it. Thank you.. Great Tutorial.

      Thanks Gordon. A black screen can be caused by a bad GPU, bad backlight inverter board, or bad LCD. The first step to try is to take a flash light to the screen and see if there is any image on the LCD. If you have an image, then your backlight has failed, if there is no image, then move on to connecting the iMac to an external display using a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable. If you get an image, then your LCD is the culprit, if you don't get an image, then you might be looking an a failed GPU. The last step is the open up the iMac up and check the 4 LED Diagnostic lights. on the mother board. If you are only getting 2 LEDs lit up, the your GPU has failed and needs to be replaced. I hope this little guide helps you restore your iMac!

    Great and detailed, explanation! Thanks to that I took the chance on upgrading my iMac 2011 's GPU to 2GB, I added Thermal Grizzly Paste to that, But apparently I added less than needed, 'cause two weeks later screen started to flash after using InDesign 2015 for some hours daily. If I buy the MX- 4 paste, how much in grams would you suggest to put on the card? Should I buy more thermal grizzly? or is it convenient to change it all?

      Hi there. Sorry for the delayed response. Grizzly paste is adequate to MX-4. I usually use a dot about the size of a pea on the GPU die. It is also possible that the replacement GPU is defective. I hope you were able to resolve this issue.

    sir i have an a1312, when turn on, can see apple logo and loading bar, the loading is slow especially above 60 or 70%, it stuck at apple logo even the bar reach 100%, no lining on screen, everthing is perfect. could it be graphic card issues?

      Sorry for the delayed response. If you are still having this issue, it can be caused by either a failing hard drive or a bad graphics card. If you have not serviced the HDD before, it is possible that you issue may just be a bad HDD. Hard drives typically have a life expectancy of 5 years. When they fail, they can have all of your symptoms. How we test this out at our shop is by booting into an external test drive with a bootable copy of macOS. If the test drive boots up all the way, the GPU is fine and the issue is more than likely the HDD. If you do not have a test drive, you can create a macOS installer by using Dosdude1 High Sierra Patcher found here. dosdude1.com/highsierra/ I hope this information helps guide you. Keep me updated!

    Are you still answering questions? I'm just wanting to know if it's ok to use the Arctic MX4 on the GPU memory as well.

      Yes. You can use that thermal paste on the GPU RAM as well.

    Wow, what a great expertise! That styrofoam solution killed me :)
    I have question considering parts. My local repairsmen have recommended avoiding eBay cards as there's a high risk of running into an old one wich has just been rufurbished and will run for weeek or two and then die for good. So they offer to swap the chip itself instead. I must admit it's hard to give up on a "new" card as it offers 2gb, while changing the chip would mean I'll be stuck with stock 1gb.
    Any thoughts on that? Would you recommend some reputable seller which you've metioned earlier in the comments?
    Thanks!

      Sorry for the delayed response. Been out of commission after having my wisdom teeth removed. Graphics cards are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain due to supply and demand. However, I left a link in the description to a list of compatible graphics cards on macrumors. I recommend checking out the list. I hope this information helps out.

      Hi Josh. I don't have any direct links to replacement GPUs. However, in the description, I have a link to a list of compatible GPUs listed on macrumors website.

    Hi ! Very nice and still up to date ! Just done with a S7100x firepro . Do you know is there is a way ton get the apple logo startup back ?

    • @iRevive
      @iRevive  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! I am not sure how to get the Apple logo with the firepro GPU. But I do know that with a NVIDIA Quadro, you can flash the VBIOS to bring back the Apple logo. There is a MacRummors link in the description where there is a discussion on installing 3rd party GPUs including the firepro. There might be information there on how to bring back the Apple logo after installation.
