    When it comes to the DMV, it just depends on WHO assists you. Some DMV tellers are more lenient than others. I've actually walked out of the DMV (because of a difficult/strict teller) and returned another day just so i could get a different (and nicer) teller to help me....and ultimately getting my paperwork/title/etc. processed. A lot of these DMV tellers love to push you around (and give you a hard time) - just because they can.

    Ohio is fun with registration too. Had a 1990 Aerostar a couple years ago. Argued with the clerk for way too long about needing the ECheck documents. It was 30 years old, technically a 'historic' vehicle, and 25+ year old vehicles do not need the ECheck. He eventually used a calculator on the date... and then let me get my registration :)

    I just got a free 87 XR4TI with no title/bill of sale from Michigan, had no issues when i did the abandoned vehicle title, took a little bit over 3 months, $200 and some running around a bit to the clerk, judge and DMV, but had no issues other wise.

    Hope you read this comment. I had the exact same experience at the DMV in SC when I went to transfer my title from my '96 Dakota. They got out the big book and went into the room and chatted and pointed at me, etc. I found the truck in a junkyard after 10 years of searching for it. It was my grandfathers truck and also the truck I drove to highschool. The original title was shredded by the junkyard. Luckily I was even able to buy the whole truck from the junkyard. I was somehow able to obtain a Vermont title for it. I went to transfer it, and they said I couldn't. My situation was like yours except at the end of it, they said in the DMV system my vin was deemed "junked", or no longer existed. So I had 2 options, vin swap it, or turn it into a drag truck. So I am basically turning it into a drag truck now. I was going to drive it on the street with the Vermont plates, but it currently doesn't run. I was going to re-register it once I got it going later this year, but they just recently put an end to the Vermont loophole.
    Basically with your car, your best bet was to sell it to someone who lives in Georgia, a no titling state.

    I'm glad you posted this, I've been looking at a car that is pre 1974 from Alabama. The seller said 1974 and prior did not have a required title in Alabama, so the car he is selling does not have a title. I also live in Ohio, so this will probably be a major problem.

    Great Video! I tried to do the Vermont loophole for my motorcycle before I realized that Ohio is really tricky, just received the plate in the mail, and happened to see this video before I tried to get title transferred. My question is, is it really unreasonable to ride somewhat frequently with Vermont places? I live in the country, so I rarely have encounters with cops, but its bound to happen sometime. If I do happen to get pulled over, could there be any serious repercussions? Or would I just get a simple citation / warning? Thank you for the info, and sorry if that's a stupid question haha

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      What it comes down to is if a cop wants to give you a hard time, he can. I think the law in ohio is after you live here for 30 days, you are supposed to switch registration to Ohio. So if you show he cop an OH licensee with an address you've lived at for a while, he's going to know what's up and could cite you. I think there is a fine but I dont remember the amount. I never got pulled over when I was driving around OH with VT plates, but it was't that often.

  • @wrbWRX
    @wrbWRX ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You could “sell” the car with the Vermont title to your wife or a friend and they can easily go into the DMV and get an Ohio title then they “sell” it back to you. Little extra work and cost but they can’t really argue someone buying a car from Vermont and bring it to Ohio.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only issue is if I sold them the car, they would get my old VT reg/title signed over to them. I'm not sure if that would do them any good to bring that into an Ohio DMV. It might depend if they get an angry manager asking 20 questions, or someone who's ready to get it done and clock out at 4:55 on a friday afternoon.

    • @wrbWRX
      @wrbWRX ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@6thGearGarage I know someone that did it without any issue after having the same problem as you. For all they know that person bought the car from someone in Vermont. Can’t really argue it.
      Also think you just got a bad dmv clerk. Go to a little small town dmv at the end of the day and they will probably get you the OH title without issue. Norwalk has always been great. I actually had a bigger dmv refuse to give me historic plates on my 89 Jeep before.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wrbWRX The manager was saying unless I could prove I bought the car from VT or I was a recent VT resident, they would not transfer the title. Sounds like I picked the wrong DMV.

    • @dysonmetal
      @dysonmetal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@6thGearGarage you could have found an Acura group in Vermont and pay someone to write you a bill of sale and a notarized letter. Find a old lady at the dmv and say this is your 5th time in there and it took weeks to contact the owner. Or go to a different one and tell them this is what they gave you as a drive out tag to drive it back to ohio.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dysonmetal That's a good idea, but it would have to be someone I really trust like a close friend/ or family member in VT. I'd have to sell the car to them, so it could go into their name, then buy it back and put it in my name. Then the OH DMV would see the VT title originated from a VT address and they wouldn't yell at me. I could have tried some other DMV offices, but I was reading on line that others in Ohio have had a similar experience to mine. OH sure doesn't make it easy.

    They seemed to change title processes in my county? because now, instead of going to the DMV to do title shit, you have to go to the title office, so does that change anything??? I have a 87 200sx I got last summer, that came without a title and I want to be able to drive the thing. Is there a way to fix this?? I live in akron, ohio so idk how different it is in columbus or other parts of ohio. But they changed things up here a bit. Im just afraid to find out the car is stolen or something. Because accoding to the previous owner, the guy he bought it off of lost the title, and he just gave me the bill of sale, him and the previous owner had. So idk kind of messed up situation, but they NEED to change these old ancient laws, and realize that for some people cars arent just a form of transportation for some people, but a hobby and a lifestyle of sorts. AND vermont is the only state that seems to realize that, given that they allow you to get a registation for cars that are 15 years or older. Which is how all states should be, but I guess its just boomers in office, trying to effect peoples hobbies and interests and shit, idk, rant, but bit drunk and this shit pisses me off. Any help though??

      @6thGearGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to live in Akron and remember having to go to a main title office on 261 for title stuff. Then a regular DMV for renewing license and getting plates. So the seller did sketchy stuff, gave you the old bill of sale and not even a bill of sale between him and you. So you don't even have proof that you bought the car from him? If thats the case you're gonna have a hard time getting an ohio title for the car.
