  • In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn an Albert King inspired lead that is full of those classic, "Albert Kingisms" that are so common in electric blues. This is a lead that you can play by yourself (no jam track required).

    I think one of the reasons B scale tones work so well over E here, where E is the V in the key of A, is because B is the secondary dominant in this instance: B is the V of E.
    A lot of Brian’s fans know quite a bit more about music than I do, of course, so fellow Active Melody aficionados, please do correct me if I have that wrong.😊
    Great lesson, as always, Brian. Albert King is one of the most fantastic and expressive guitar players we have the good fortune to still be able to enjoy.

    If you’re an intermediate guitarist - Pay special attention to Brians use of 6th and 9th chords in this lesson. They are a useful tool in sounding a lot better. Learn the 6th and 9th chords in two positions. With a 5th string root for D9 x54555 - then slide that top 3 string triad up 2 frets to get your 6th chord. (6th chord always ends up being 2 frets higher on the fretboard. Now, also learn D6 with a high E string or 4th string root, x x 12 11 12 10 and then slide down 2 frets for your D9.
    If you can learn those two positions your blues will be much more mature and give you a much wider range of notes to play. Those 6th and 9th chords are a really big game changer.

    I read all sorts of inventive explanations for the key of the intro… It seems straightforward to me.
    The first measure is in E7. It opens with the full chord and concludes the first measure with a slide to the 5 note (B), followed by the 7 to the root (D to E). Measure two goes to the IV chord (D). That measure follows not Bm pentatonic but D (the relative major of Bm) to play over the IV chord. Simple.

    Great lesson! B minor pentatonic works over the 5 chord because the notes all fit into A Dorian mode.

      You can also play the minor or major/ minor combo of the 5th over 5 chord.

    SRV had so many influences, but I always hear more of Albert King in his playing than anyone else...including his brother Jimmy. Thanks, Brian...can't wait to dig into this one!

    I had the great pleasure of seeing Albert King play live at the Town Hall Birmingham UK, supported by Walter Trout! Great lesson, lots of SRV in there too, cantankerous old Albert loved him.

    Albert was one of a kind. His tone and play style matched his voice and attitude off stage as well as on. When you met the man there was no doubt who you were in the room with.

      "Blues face..." ???

    • @mattjulian8153
      @mattjulian8153 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep…’Blues Face’…. You know, when the ‘player’ isn’t just playing the music…the ‘player’ is living the music and that ‘living’ is displayed in the players face. All the greats have it.
      You hear it with your ears but you see the ‘face’ with your eyes…and that’s when you know the ‘player’ is a real musician and not just a weekend picker.

    6:05... the lick works because the three notes played are in the E7 chord (5, b7 & Root) but, thanks for the little test. Whenever a 7th chord is played it works. If the band played 7th chords deceding or ascending by half tones to the root you can drop or raise the lick accordingly. But you already knew this knew this. Ha!

    Why Bm works with E7? The second position of Bm on the E, B, and G strings are D&E, A&B, and F# respectively.
    The vii, I, IV, V, and ii of the E. All good notes for E major tonality.

    @stevegledhill1575 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Stupid question..instead of being in the second position of the Bm pentatonic, aren’t you playing the 5 position of the E minor pentatonic? That’s why it fits over the E 7…

    I don’t know who needs to hear this, but 8:25 and 22:35 are the exact same notes played in two different positions.
    Both are implying the 6 to 9 walk downs twice with two notes of the chord at a time.
    f# & d, e & c, d & b, c & a
