Howto remove the speaker coil from the Airtag (make your Airtag very silent!)

  • Be sure to also watch an alternative method to remove the speaker magnet: • *Alternative method - ...
    This is a little howto video on removing the speaker magnet from your Airtag. Some Airtags might still make a tiny bit of sound (almost unhearable) after doing this! This will be the soundwaves reflecting against the inside of the case. Others are totally silent after doing this.
    Doing this will void your waranty!

    Thanks, the anti-stalking tech makes these things pretty useless for antitheft unless you remove the speaker. I put two on expensive things.. but I only disable the speaker on one hoping the thief will stop looking once the beeping device is located and thrown into the woods.

      @Georg D. yeah bright idea . Use a tracker that can be traced back to the owner. Lol! This issue is a non-issue. A kitchen knife can cut vegetables. It can also be used to kill. Should we be concerned about kitchen knives?

      @@jeffskent that is not how it works. Every iPhone user have to use an apple i.d. and a phone number. The phone number is tied to the owner (att, sprint etc.). You can’t fake that. When you activate the Airtag, it is automatically registered or tied to the owner’s apple ID and phone number. Hence, any active airtag can be traced back.

    FYI when you pry the cases apart, the safe prying zones are (with battery bump at 12:00) from 10:00-2:00 and 5:00-7:00. There are small electrical components right at the edges of the other positions that you can detach by prying (ask me how I know)

    • @MariusStrom
      @MariusStrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      (alternately (and probably also a good idea), the electrical components are 1.8mm in from the outer lip, so keep your prying instruments no more than 1.5mm deep and you should be safe. The part you want to pry off is only 1.2mm thick at it's edge)

    Love the DIY, and there’s many legit reasons to disable the speaker, but there’s something to be said about circumventing an anti-stalking feature.
    Though, there’s already many trackers that don’t have any, the pervasiveness of the findmy network will make an air tag modded like this dangerous for android users, as there would be no way for them to know they’re being tracked.

    • @AirtagAlex
      @AirtagAlex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I know what you are saying.. but in my case i want to disable it for several reasons and they have nothing to do with stalking. When my bike gets stolen, i don’t want to alert the thief after 3 days by a beeping airtag. Same goes for my car and when i send one by mail.
      8 years ago i bought a matchbox sized gps tracker to record the route i walked outside. If 8 years ago it was matchbox sized imagine what they can do now. I think the stalker thing is a bit overhyped with the airtag. There are many other ways to track someone.
      My airtag won’t make noise but they will still show up on the iphone.. that won’t change.

    Hi, I was wondering if there's a way of making it waterproof again. Also, will it break if I put a relatively strong magnet next to it? I want my cat to wear it and he has a magnet attached to his collar as well, that he uses to open the cat flap. Thank you for the video!!

    • @AirtagAlex

      There is a way to remove the magnet and keep it waterproof.. I will make a video about it one of these days. You will have to pretty much make a hole at the place where the magnet is.. that way you don't need to open the sides of the plastic.

    "Doing this will void your warranty!"
    i am not sure if apple would even tear down a defective air tag to see what went wrong *
    *= in the old days when products was very expensive both to the consumer and to manufacture so manufacturers would tear down the devices to see what went wrong.
    today stuff is so cheap to manufacture and marked up so much that even a top level iphone probably will be chucked in the dumpster or recycling bin and a new one would be sent out.
    apple may tear down their products just to recycle for environmental purposes as while the air tag is $30 to the consumer it i probably pennies to make and is not worth tearing down to see what went wrong unless they got a large number of them back as defective at once or too many returns from same customer.

    Really it’s kind of not a good deterrent for stalkers. It’d be more sensible if phones that were nearby for an hour or so were alerted that there was a long term nearby lost activated airtag near them, and after a while longer (3 hours?) actually let them locate it

    While i think this is really cool and i'm sure you'll come up with more crazy stuff (loved the airtags traveling ideas) - this is exactly why WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS....
    Expecting Apple to completely glue the next airtags and possibly not even allow for user battery exchange because removing noise from Airtag makes it a privacy nightmare; if someone gets one of these dropped into their bag, especially if they don't have an iPhone ... well, stalker's paradise.

      Then it just means that the market price for the old gen airtag will go up.
      I’m personally only buying the airtag because it’s possible to forcefully mute the damn thing. The last thing I want is for a bike thief to be alerted that he is being tracked.
      With Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, I find it hilarious that you all seem concerned about privacy at this point.

    Apple could (and should) make it harder to do this by disabling the airtag if the speaker is missing (or shorted) by measuring the impedance. It would at least raise the bar from trivial.
