Cathie Wood predicts only 3 spot bitcoin ETFs will survive

- One the first day after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved a spot bitcoin ETF (BTC-USD), over $3 billion was traded among 11 spot BTC funds, according to Bloomberg. As the different firms vie for customer attention in the near-term, time will tell whether or not all 11 funds will remain long-term.
Cathie Wood, Ark Invest CEO & CIO, joins Yahoo Finance to discuss the various spot bitcoin ETFs, which have staying power, and the advantages of Ark Invest's ETF, the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB)
Wood expects Ark's ETF will be one that stands the test of time, for three reasons: the firm'sl infrastructure and operations, its research, and its salesforce.
On consolidation, Wood says, "I don't think there will be 11 spot bitcoin ETFs. Some may close, some may be consolidated into bigger companies. The more pure play companies may be bought out by the larger players who need more of that expertise in-house. I do think the process of closing and consolidation will take us down to three, maybe four, but more likely three."
Vangaurd is one institution that is not getting into the spot bitcoin ETF market. Wood argues that it is "a terrible decision" and a "strategic blunder."

Reminds me of the guy who bought bitcoin in like 2011 and everyone was calling him a chump, then the market boomed and after a few years and he made a killing, whereas many people got burnt because they doubted.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I feel that the last bull run was bolstered by all the money being printed. Major returns next bull run but I think they will be tamer in my humble opinion. A 10x on AMS28D$ is and a 15x on polygon are fair considering how much those two coins are interwoven into the entire crypto ecosystem

I consider the introduction of a Bitcoin ETF to be a revolutionary step in the financial markets. That I bought a tonne at the bottom in October is a good thing. Although I recently sold $160,000 worth to hold cash. Sorry to those who didn't see this entire move. As you listened to bad news all thru last year, you really lost out on some incredible profits.

I actually own... well let's say I have my BTC on Fidelity crypto, should I get in on the ETF as well? (I trust Fidelity more than I trust myself to have custody)
The ETF for Bitcoin that Ark issued in Canada 🇨🇦 was a complete disaster. The regulators shut it down and investors lost money.

This is an interesting point that was brought up is that clearly not all this companies Etf will stand the test of time, one thing that I noted is that Blackrock and fidelity apparently reduced their management fee for the first day of the spot etf but as times goes we will probably see the fees change and depending on the structures of each companies some of those etfs can practically die in a couple of years. I am not familiar with the ark structure but I think Cathie raised a good point and the same can be said of Blackrock. Either way Bitcoin is here to stay
If Grayscale doesn't WAKE UP re their fees, only the brain dead will stay with them, it seems to me.

How are Spot BTC ETF prices determined? They all have different share prices. If it's based out of actual BTC, how does that work? Will the spot ETF price go up and down exact percentage wise as the actual price of BTC? That was my assumption. But fact that all of their prices are different has me questioning how all of this works.

What's the difference between holding native Bitcoin and these bitcoin etf, particularly when they charge fees.
Native Bitcoin is owned by you. You secure it and self custody, cant be confiscated unless you give someone your passcode. ETFs are for those who don't want to deal with self custody and have funds in retirement and brokerage accounts that want exposure. The ETFs are still backed by actual Bitcoin however, you just don't own it outright.
401K access
You can buy BTC ETF with 401k/ tax deferred money. Only way to do that with native BTC is with a self directed IRA, which has high cost and big barrier to entry for smaller buyers.
@@indigobluu: Things have gone VERY wrong on exchanges. Until that is insured and well regulated, there's always that risk. ETF's like stock, will be backed by SIPC and well regulated.
I don't want the risk or headache of the BTC exchanges.
Purchasing Bitcoin(Or any investment on an exchange with a pre taxed Roth IRA means profits you make will be **^TAX FREE!! ***
So black rock, fidelity, Gray, then maybe invesco and ark fight it out. But even with all the assets under, eventually they have to get wallet I assume. Gonna be interesting. PS if Cathy would hold some of her positions a little longer she would be a living legend by now.
I don't think Grayscale will survive unless they become the first mover for trading options on their Bitcoin ETF.
Ark, BlackRock, and Fidelity will survive because they have other funds where they can include their spot Bitcoin ETF's as a percentage allocation of some of their other funds, but Grayscale doesn't have that luxury.
Regarding the wallet comment, it sounds like she was saying their partner 21 something or other, has been in crypto awhile and I take it they have that well figured out. And the rest have had plenty of time since they applied for the ETF to figure out custody. But wallets for customers aren't needed because the customers will never be allowed to have any of the actual BTC purchased on their behalf.

It's a sad day for crypto as a whole. I see the future of Bitcoin eventually moving out of the wallets of the individuals and being held and traded by big investment firms. I think it is two different "audiences" . Coinbase is for BTC nerds. ETF's are just another investment vehicle for people who traditionally invest in stocks, commodities, and other ETF's.
I think many of the etf's will be going through Coinbase.

Except for the fact that real gold gets a little mined and a little consumed, I still don't get why holding BTC as an investment is fundamentally different than physical gold.
My gold in safe deposit boxes doesn't get hacked, scammed, etc.
At least with an ETF, BTC is regulated and convenient, and you can't lose your cold storage wallet, etc.

biggest risk to btc is sun activity......sun maximus could cause the net to go down for months.
Btc would be the only thing that survived a solar flare. It just needs two computers to work. As soon as two come back online it will start again automatically. Can't say that for any other financial systems.

Most of the fee hoes to pay voinbaze or whoever for custody security costs.
As well as financial advisors and marketing to push more funds into their particular etf to grow liquidity, so that high networks buyers can buy and sell the etf without taking it off its peg during the trading day I think.
U know investing in a product that is not tangible, takes a lot of faith and bravery.

Of course there is proof of holdings, they are required by law. That is the point of an ETF, and the reason big banks are willing to dump money into them.

Are these etfs actually buying bitcoin, or are they just buyng bitcoin futures as there is a big difference.
it sounds like they are just buying the futures and then once they get enough money they will then buy the actual bitcoin at market.
They are buying actual bitcoin. These are spot ETF’s, not bitcoin futures.
