  • A most golden age murder.
Many thanks to my husband, Guy Cuthbertson, for guiding us through the decline of the country house.

Thank you Guy. As someone who is not a fan of Downton Abbey and is also aware of the hardships that servants faced, I liked your take on this subject.

I remember being shocked when I learned that some 1000 country houses had been destroyed in the middle of the last century. While it is sad to lose architectural heritage, there is something obscene about one family holding thousands of acres, still, in a nation that is so short of housing. The proper preservation or development of resources, be they land or forest or buildings, is a great conundrum.

Who said, "I never thought I would be so rich that I could afford a car and I never thought I would be so poor that I could not afford a maid."? I may be misquoting, but I think it was said by a mystery writer.

Thank you. Your comments about the Yanks reminded me of a scene from what they call a costume drama. Odd designation given that the house was considered the star of the show. I have in mind The scene when Maggie Smith tells Shirley McClain what she sees in the glass and McClain responds by telling Smith what she sees in the mirror. Sorry, I could not find the video clip of that marvelous reprodite.🙂
