My favorite railroad murder story, although post-golden age, is Edmund Crispin's Gervase Fen story "Beware of the Trains." The murder and solution are rather in second place, surrounded by a hilarious exposition on the perils and annoyances of train travel in the post-WWII era. "... starring Kenneth Brannagh and his awful mustache as Hercule Poirot." Touché, if cheeky.
Yes, although Fen usually drives - appallingly - in Lily Christne III (who - or what - was Lily Christine II, by the way - anyone know?) there are several mentions of trains in the books: usually a refreshing change from the general idyllic presentation of pre BR rail travel - my favourite is '... stopped at every lamp-post, like a dog ...'
