Really appreciate your comments about the solo - Emppu can shred if the song calls for it (Romanticide from the Wacken show is one example), but he gives every song exactly what is needed. No one in Nightwish shows off just for the sake of showing off, or as Marko (bass) put it in an interview once, "We don't need to masturbate with our instruments."

LOOOL!! What a perfect way to put it. Yeah there have been a lot of bands that I've been turned off from simply because of the members showing off for no reason with solos etc etc. Like, I get it, that's kinda what they're for but, personally, I just prefer something that actually has substance and brings something to the song. I appreciate your appreciation lol! Thank you :)

Tuomas is playing the keyboards. He's the songwriter and founder of the band.
I've been in love with this song for over a decade and I still get chills and tear up when I hear it. It's actually a song they came out with when they had their first vocalist, Tarja, but both vocalists are fantastic. This is I think my favorite version of it. I saw Floor singing it during the "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" tour and I do think I cried.
When Floor joined the band, I looked her up and found a duet that Floor and Tarja had done together of "Over the Hills and Far Away" in 2013. Really fun seeing them singing together.

It's a shame that Jukka, the drummer, had to step down in 2014 due to chronic insomnia. His friend Kai Hahto took over. He's a very different drummer, but really amazing. Marko, the bassist, who you'll find can sing too - his voice and Floor's were made to be together - sadly announced his departure from the band earlier this year. Tuomas (pronounced two - oh - mass), on keyboards - The Metal Mozart - writes nearly everything. Emppu, on guitar, is the joker of the pack. And yet to be seen is Troy Donockley, an English multi-instrumentalist, who can sing as well. Other members of the army will tell you about the symphonic stuff.

Hey, NW Army reporting from Germany here :) I really appreciated your reaction, you did a nice job in giving several members of the band their deserved credit and not just focussing on Floor, which I really loved. Still, your reaction to her first notes and especially the part from 4:00 to 5:00 might make this my favourite reaction to this song so far - and trust me, I've seen a lot :D Definitely deserved yourself a new abo with that minute!
However, I feel that Emppu (the guitarrist) and Tuomas (keyboardist, composer, and together with Emppu last active founding member) do not get enought credit for their talent. I'm honestly in love with both, Emppu's mischievious grin always makes me smile and Tuomas talent in writing and composing and setting up a show you'll never forget is just insane. That's perfectionism done right. Not slowing you down for not getting done anything like you want, but MAKING it as you want. Musical genius of our time, and you won't ever prove me wrong. Personally I think the 2013 Wacken band set up might have been the best Nightwish ever had, but Tuomas has a good hand in chosing really talented members if need occurs.
Lastly, I liked that you get that it was a score which explains (together with Tuomas's never failing genius) the "missing foundation line" that you talked about and how Floor and the band always seem to stand in a supporting contrast, if you know what I mean. Her high, angelic, almost ethereal tones mixed with a hard bass and drums and then the music gets softer when her voice gets even more power, etc.
Oh and I absolutely had no problems with your amount of pausing, if I only wanted to hear the song I knew where to find it, so go ahead and tell us everything that's on your mind in your next reactions! Although, this video already being 30 minutes for a "mere" 10 minute song of Nightwish, I'm a bit afraid of what would happen if you ever do Poet and the Pendulum or Greates Show on Earth. (The last one is 24 minutes of it's own.) And also, that you might just not survive the epicness of those :D

Time to go down the biggest rabbit hole in music, you just peeked in. Another 110ish studio songs to go... this is song #13 of 15 at this concert. No two Nightwish songs are the same, but they are all stunning. Put Master Passion Greed which is pure thrash metal next to Sleeping sun which is the most beautiful ballad... there is no band that can do such a wide range of music so damned well. The guy on the keys? Tuomas Holopainen, or Metal Mozart as he is known... that guy composes 95% of nightwish music, does the arrangements... a musical genius that cannot be matched anywhere on this planet, his name is going to go up alongside beethoven and the rest eventually.

The magician at the keys is Tuomas . He is keyboarder, Songwriter, composer. The best way to describe hime is: Metal Mozart
Marco is (was - he resigned just recently) playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song. This one of the many reasons why we all do love him.
--> A perfect song to expreience both Marco and Emppu is Nightwish tribute to Pink Floyds "High Hopes". It's not from this world and sooooo intense!
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide.People are traveling from across the world to be there. It's always sold out in hours. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
-> There are only great songs from Wacken: "Ever Dream" is catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
-> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)
-> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …
-> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.
-> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)
--> "I want my tears back" from Buenos Aires is pure positive power with a dancing Floor and a fantastic (as always) Troy.
    *****
From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing roller coaster ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to power metal like Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor. A sad and important story and at the same time for me one of their musically most beautiful songs.
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.
    *****
If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own: Beste Zangers
The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.
    *****
    * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.
One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet.
Here is the open letter Tuomas / the band wrote towards Tarja:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen
    And here is her response:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen
From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed"
They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it.

Great Reaction Chief!!! Love this entire band - got a chance to meet them all about 5 years ago (with my daughter) - had pictures taken. So there's proof!
Nightwish has been around for a while - I first started listening to them when Tarja Turunen was their lead (she is also amazing), stayed with them when Anette Olzon was with them (also a very good, but sometimes underrated vocalist), and was absolutely ecstatic when I learned Floor had joined them.
I've been watching Floor for a while - it started with After Forever - Floor was 16 when she joined them. I became aware of them through Epica - Mark Jansen (Epica's rhythm guitarist and grunt vocalist) was part of the band then, while at the same time he was dating Simone Simons from Epica (a band well worth checking out - I've seen them live several times, met them all, and they're wonderful people).
While she was with After Forever, she wrote an album with Jørn Viggo Lofstad in 2007, under the project name Northward. They finally got around to recording it in 2017, and you can find some of those on TH-cam.
When After Forever disbanded, Floor formed her own band, Revamp (also very good live), which lasted for two albums. She later joined Nightwish when Anette had to leave the band. Oh, and this was mid-tour - so, Floor accepted an invitation to finish the tour - she was asked to learn the set list in 48 hours. After the tour, she joined the band officially.
She has also performed on the Netherlands show Beste Zangers in 2019 - I think I've seen all the episodes where she sings - the people sitting on the couches in the front rows are also other very accomplished singers. The most seen episode is of her singing Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort, who played the Phantom in Netherlands' production of the show. It really shows off her operatic chops, as well as her amazing range (Oh, and Henk is pretty damn good himself). I would recommend checking it out: th-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/w-d-xo.html - not exactly a metal song. It's more, well..., Broadway. But for every Floor fan, it's really a must-listen.
Short story (the TL;DR version) - Nightwish is great, been around a long time. Floor is amazing, been around a long time. Both have HUGE portfolios, all of which are worth a listen. Great people, too.
Again, I love your channel, I love your emotional reactions to the songs, I love your pauses and going back to the beginning to replay that again, I love your waffling, and wish you nothing but the best, my brother!

Steve! WHAT a comment! You KNOW I love all this insight and I applaud you and appreciate you MAJORLY for taking the time to type this out and give me all this info!
I definitely want to look further into all of that now that you've made me properly aware of the.. ermmm.. progression(?) of the band and of Floor's career in particular. She is SO talented and I'd love to see the origins of how she came to be such an iconic vocalist. Also, I think I saw someone else suggest listening to that Phantom rendition of hers.. HMMM! I may just have to get right on that!
I'm hoping to be well versed on the FULL awesomeness of Nightwish before November because they're playing in Birmingham and I SO DESPERATELY want to go see them! I have a lot of Nightwish to do before then, that's for sure!

@@fnglert : Sorry, I'm disagreeing with _both_ people saying "Wembley is the better version."
Hate to tell you, it's not. First, Floor really doesn't "growl" at Wembley, she 'fry screams.' That's not a true growl, because a true growl should make you wonder if you're hearing it.
Second, the venue of the ship is much more intimate -- and because of the smaller shape, the music is much better. As a venue, Wembley only had one concert ever sound good, which was 2016 -- but even then, some songs cant sound good at a venue like Wembley, no matter what you do, and Yours Is An Empty Hope is one of those songs. At Wembley, for YIAEH, the sound mixing is a major bug up the arse for me. The balance sounds disjointed, not tuned, and rushed -- none of those things that make for a good listening experience. And I'm saying it right now: If you've either never heard the Nightwish Cruise with headphones on, or you've heard both performances and still think Wembley is better, you don't know what you're listening to, and you don't know how to get things to sound good while you listen to them.
Chief, I'm telling you this: There is a reason why I put the Nightwish Cruise down as the venue for Yours Is An Empty Hope -- its because the song sounds better in the smaller venue. People are saying to react to Wembley, for the ending fry screams from Floor, but I'm telling you, the sound balance and mixing, at Wembley, for Yours Is An Empty Hope, just sucks. Trust me on this -- I would never want to steer you wrong, plus, as a new Nightwish listener, I want you to have the best listening experience possible.
And for Yours Is An Empty Hope, Wembley ain't the best version. That venue ain't the best.

Emppu, the guitarist, is a outstanding (and lovely) musician but he, and also all the other bandmembers, play their part just as it is needed for the song. And this song...you can't imagine it but Floor was only 10 months with the band. She stepped in mid NW's World tour, having fired their 2nd singer. Floor started her own YT channel at the beginning of the covid pandemic last year to keep in touch with the fans. She actually reacted to this song and told us how that high note came about. You definitely have to check that out! NW made also a 22-episodes documentary "Making of a New Album" (their 8th album "Endless forms Most Beautiful") which is very amusing and interesting, worth ckecking out, you get to know the band better (and also their current drummer Kai Hahto and Troy Donockly, a amazing multi-intrumentalist, famous for playing the Uilleann (Ill-en) pipes, the Irish bagpipes. Marko, the bassist, unfortunately stepped back at the beginning of this year for a unknown period of time. He is missed sorely😥 Btw..aren't you suffocating with the mask? Ok. In the face of the vocal perfection that is the Valkyrie Floor Jensen, tears are not unmanly. What mortal can resist the pull of a Viking Goddess? It would take a dead soul to be unmoved.

I sayed it a number of Times, in 2012 i Read that Nighwish would be Headliner I Wacken 2013 ... so i was thinking to not get the Tickets ... but luckily i did get them anyway ... So wenn the Lineup Change late in 2012 came so Floor joined the Band i wassnt aware ... when i saw them in Wacken 2013 i was blown away ... I cant remember much from Wacken 2013 ... but This Concert i will never forget ... luckily Its so hyped on TH-cam this days ... so i can refresh my Memorys ... The only times i heard the Goddess mess up and i think ive seen every video of her and i saw her 5 times......both happened at the same show ( the pinkpop show , the whole show is on you tube ) with After Forever her first band ....she cracks at the beginning of "Beautiful Emptiness " and also in the first chorus of " my plegde of allegiance pt I " ....both times shes going for incredibly high notes ...shes perfect the rest of the show . It shows shes not from another world , she is in fact HUMAN .

I agree with John.. that's pretty super-human and I LOVE it! I genuinely don't expect I'll hear of this again tbh lol!

Part 2 Floor Jansen's perfection and greatness is a combination of shitload of talent, relentless and unforgiving practise and methodology resulting in overwhelming technical prowess and to top it all off - selfless, generous and honest emotional delivery. She is really spectacular. She actually did a reaction video herself to this performance on her youtube channel - it's super interesting and explains a lot of the effort going into such a vocal performance as this.

@@Chief322 John Williams works with them frequently, yes. Nightwish use Pip Williams (I don't believe any relation), to direct them, and he does a fine job too.
The leader of the orchestra is the name given to the principal violinist (on the rightmost side of the conductor at the front). That was me in my music school orchestra many years ago. Chorally I sang bass (a rather traumatic change from my earlier boy soprano, which took some years to regain singing confidence from - heck, I yodelled without even trying!).
Generally, an orchestra has a leader (already noted) a conductor, who may change frequently as guest conductors are frequently used, although there may also be a resident conductor, and often a musical director, who arranges music to suit the current composition of the orchestra, organise virtuoso soloists and act as a coordinator between the orchestra and any choirs they may be working with. Sometimes the musical director also conducts (as Pip does for Nightwish recordings). Even in major orchestras like the LPO, few of the musicians are salaried, and nearly all are session players - part-time members who are on the "auditioned,, approved and rehearsed" list and are contacted per performance or tour to find out if they are available. There are probably something like 350 or more members of the LPO, but you will never see all of them on stage together (except maybe for Mahler's "Symphony of a thousand", which rarely sees full-scale performance because of the difficulty of gathering enough musicians together). Different compositions call for different instruments and strengths of each section, too.

The reason for the cheer at the end is because the first Nightwish singer stopped singing much earlier and didn't sing the final notes, second singer couldn't really sing this song at all and Floor only with band 10 months having joined mid tour and virtually no-one at this concert had heard her sing with Nightwish or heard that ending.
