    ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
    This video concludes our 3 part series on building the rabbit hutch. I strongly suggest fencing the bottom. This way you don't have to move dirt around filling the corners back in with soil. Rabbits most of the time will choose to tunnel out the corners of the run.
    Check out our video How to add on to the rabbitry.

    Hello.
    Sorry for my broken english, I'm from Romania and I recently got 3 californians (1 buck and 2 does). I'm planning to breed them for meat and fur for my own use. I just found your channel and i'm sure it's going to help me a lot in this project. Tomorow I'm going to start building the hutch and i've tought of making them a little bit like apartments, stocked over each other at about 20 inches tall in columns of 3, about 12 inches off the ground. With one animal per cell at about 24 / 60 inches. With 1 inch squared wire (fence like) as a floor and inclined ceilings for easy cleaning of the manure.
    I love meat, i'm a cook as a profession and as a consumer I'm sick of all the bulls**t the food industry is trying to sell us while keeping animals in not the best conditions, thus i've enroled into this with the best interest for these animals that I am going to sacrifice.
    I absolutely love your idea for the underground nests and the ramp that goes to that little space on the ground.
    After all of my rambling i finally arrive at my questions. I would like to give my rabbits plenty of space to move and your "play pen" idea really intrigued me. Can i group more than one rabbit into the same cage (i've heard that bucks are especially violent against each other.) I know you americans use "tractors" to grow rabbits together but i don't know exactly how that works and judging from what i've seen here and on other channels the informations tend to contradict what advice the people here are giving me (PS i don't like the way my guys are growing their livestock).
    I'm looking forward to your response.
    Thank you!

      Orlando, Your english is very good. I understand and share your frustration with all the chemicals and preservatives in meat today. I farm for the same reason. You can group females especially sibling does together with no problems. Sibling bucks(brothers)are more difficult. In one cage it's pretty tough to avoid one buck seriously damaging the other. In most cases once males reach 4-5 months and they're left in the same cage battles will ensue. You mentioned pens or colony raising. Raising 2 bucks in the same pen is possible. In the beginning one will always hassle the other one to establish dominance(one bunny has to be the big bunny). All bucks are a little different so theirs no absolute for sure answer. Your best bet would use brothers from the same litter but if this isn't possible and your starting with two unrelated bucks make sure thy're roughly the same size. You may have to start by putting their cages next to each other for a few days to establish each others scent. Consider swapping cages for the same reason on the last day before introducing them. Start with a few short 5-10 minutes introductions. Take a break and try again later. Have a broom or something to break up a fight. This will look something like one rabbit charging over and batting the other bunny with its nails and front paws. maybe even some pinning. Pinning is to be expected but make sure the top bunny isn't biting. If you hear squealing separate the rabbits and try again later. Change the runs, pens or the scenery, make sure they have tunnels and things to jump on. This helps distract the aggressive bunny. Add a a few pieces of banana or apple. Also, you could put a Doe in the cage that you'd like bred. I let my rabbits run in the chicken coop sometimes and have had two bucks in the pen at the same time chasing and breeding the same doe with no fighting. Try all these things and I promise you with perseverance eventually they'll be with each other but not with out a little work. Good luck.

      Thank you so much for the prompt and detailed response. I'm going to take your advice by heart and i'm sure my fluffsters will be nice to each other. I'm going to breed these 3 now and their offsprings between litters after that. It's going to be a little bit complicated cause i start working abroad in march and will return for two weeks every 2 months until november. I have my grandparents (80 yo) to steward my rabbits but I can't count on them for more complex duties. But I'll find a way. Another question: Can I use the methods you described to accomodate more rabbits in the same pen? That would allow me a better way to create my rabbitry. Making nesting cells like the ones descriped in the first comment for my does that i want to use for multiplying and fattening pens (i think those are the colonies???.. i have a bit to brush up on my english rabbit terminology LOL). I would like to use these pens for the bucks to start harvesting them by october.
      Oh and thank you again for all the personalised help and for creating your wonderful channel. I can clearly see you are a good person by heart and a good responsible farmer. You're an excellent role model. Keep up the good work!

      Oh and another thing... When i got the californians the breeder had some LionHeads and I got the cutest little grey and orange chimera bunny that i named Harvey (after Batman's TwoFace) cause his head is half and half. He is the cutest, funniest and well behaved pet I've ever had. :D

      Oh don't think it hasn't happened. They always come back though. I lay fencing down along the run to buy myself some time.I lay dirt over it and you can't tell it's there until they tunnel and then the dirt falls through and you can see a tunnel. I notice the tunnel and fill it in. before it becomes a problem.

      The hutch is 40" off the ground which seems to be a safe height. I do think having a dog in the area seems to help. All our rabbits have a hide box to give them a sense of security. Every little bit helps.

    I'm planning out my hutch rebuild and am wanting to add the kindling totes. I wondered, have you never had any animals try to get into the totes with the babies in them? We have a dog, but he doesn't roam free at night and I was wondering about raccoons and opossums.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every tote you install will need to be checked for chewing and rain an some rabbits will pee in the tote until they get used to it. Rain will come in after approximately 5 years and you'll need to reseal inside and out.

    How do you keep the rabbit from digging out

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They like dig little holes and lay in the cold dirt
      I lay fencing down on the sides around the run. This gives me time to fill in any tunnels that are getting out of hand
      I can simply put 2" x 4" cage wire on the bottom but I like them to be able to cool off

      If I did have weasels I'd bury my 1/2" hardware cloth fencing about 18" deep(you'd know how deep to go with weasels better than me) and use hardware cloth for the entire run.

      @@TheRabbitryCenterI have runs with wire on the bottom and my rabbits started going to the bathroom in the runs instead of in the cages where I can easily clean those up. What do? To clean the run I would have to completely move the run which is extremely difficult because it’s a tight soace. Anything I can do to encourage going to the bathroom in the cage? Or any kind of spray I can use to dissolve the poop to make it soak into the earth?

      Well, I'm close friends with the musician that does a lot of the music on my channel. When I started the channel his songs were free to use. He since has sold the copyrights to the songs and now they're owned by someone else. I was striked by the new owner to stop playing the songs. I had to fill the videos with the only songs I could find from TH-cam that were long enough. This song plays over the video and audio.
      Sorry about that. I won't make that mistake again.
      Nothing against Eric. He's a great dude and a very talented musician/photographer he just writes too good of music. He claims that he warned me that they would be sold but I don't remember that. Haha. Here's his Channel if you want to hear some of his stuff.
