    I live in Southwest Michigan and have a good friend with 9 and a half acres that would love to grow chestnut trees on his property. I sure would like to lay my hands on some of the saplings or at least some of the nuts to try and grow our own!

    I am a Michigan resident and I am looking into getting started planting chestnut trees. Is there somewhere local that I can visit to buy the nuts when they fall to get started with the germination process. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Have you solved the disease problem that destroyed the American Chestnut trees?

    • @koltoncrane3099
      @koltoncrane3099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I’ve read chestnuts out west are good cause the blight doesn’t survive well there. And back East they’re breeding with chinese trees and doing GMO trees to get blight free. But there’s a group that’s probably the most natural as they’re breeding surviving trees with each other to promote some resistance since not all died from the disease.

      The GMO tree works but needs gov. approval. Backcross and other hybrid methods work but take much longer to create, and also deliver varied results due to the gene pool. The GMO is our best shot imo, and hopefully we'll be able to plant it by 2023.

    Are these chinese chestnut trees? Are you propagating a crop from the same cultivar that destroyed the American Chestnut tree?

    • @mikepowell8611
      @mikepowell8611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Chinese Chestnuts didn't destroy American cultivares a fungus did. But yeah, they probably are Chinese American hybrids. They're working on a gmo pure American strain and a Chinese/American hybrid thats only 1/16th Chinese but has the blight resistance. The pure American Chestnut is effectively gone.

      Chestnut blight is not going away the damage is already done hundreds of years ago so the only way to get chestnuts is a chinese tree or hybrid.

      @@yunpigsackki_zuger yes I know. I was trying to point out that Mike saying that the trees themselves didn't kill the American ones was stupid because they were the hosts of the blight
