Excellent tips. Thanks. Living on the coast of South Africa heat is a problem. But sun isn't. Solar is the way to go if you can. I supplement our diet with Tilapia. I turned my pool into a pond and use the backwash water to water the garden. Saves money. The water combined with rabbit tea and worm tea makes a super tonic for the garden. I also use comfrey to feed the rabbits and as a tea for the garden.

I used to play baseball and would play in some pretty competitive tournaments and was told if you can catch(I was a catcher) in Texas, you can catch anywhere.

Like your video. Once we have our our property, I want to get rabbits, but living in central Florida, I wasn’t sure it be possible in summer time. Your video helped me understand simple set up for solar power, I would probably add a cooler with ice and fan to the set up, to help keep them cool, plus keeping them on north side of a building, no direct sun = prevent heatstroke. Lost a rooster to heatstroke, it won’t happen again if I can avoid it.

Great video.
As an electronics nerd I would recommend putting everything in an outdoor project box and using an outdoor switch box as a more permanent mounting option. It would reduce the risk of anything coming in contact with the terminals and would hide the wire from the weather extending the life time of the parts. A pair of boxes and some conduit to stick the wire in would add less the $50 to the projects price and would look like a professional installed it all.

Thanks for doing this video! I went down the solar research rabbit hole (see what I did there?) a few years ago after hurricane Irma. For what I wanted to do then (homemade 1-room a/c) I figured I needed 200watts. That meant a more expensive (mppt) charge controller, choosing between 12&24 volts, etc. This easy setup with low amp usage is much simpler. People should know there’s 12 volt lights they can get, also, that won’t draw too many amps - hopefully I didn’t miss you mentioning that. They might need a light or two if they feed before daylight in the mornings like me.

It's been brought to my attention that the fan product in the linking wasn't linking up to a 12V fan. Please double check your amazon order and make sure your fans are in fact 12V. I just ordered 5 of these last week and everything turned out great but I thought it was worth mentioning.
If you do have a 24V fan on order try to cancel the order and order the fan I have now linked in the description. It's a few dollars more but it comes with (2) .25A fans.

The Rabbitry Center thanks for all your help! I also asked about the feeding amount for the baby’s. Do you take the the amount for each and add that all together and let them all eat at once or individually?
If you have long runs of wire, voltage drop needs to be considered, which will determine your wire size. Temperature also plays a factor in voltage drop, the panels could double as water heaters in the winter. Go ahead and bawl when you purchase that deep cell marine battery. You can run your fans all night if need be, depending on how many fans you have.

Getting ready for this years heat. How many solar panels did you get and what size? You have 2 sizes in your Amazon shop.
I’d watch the video again and write the math down it depends on how many fans you’re running
I’m running 12 fans so you probably don’t need that much
Amps x volts =watts
.25 amps x 12 volts = 3 watts needed to run a fan
6 watts needed to charge and run the fan at the same time
So if I was running three .25 amp fans I would purchase a 20Watt solar panel- this would provide 18 watts +2 extra watts
40 watt for (6) fans and so on...

I have a question about cooling totes and runs. ( Sorry it isn't about the fans, but this is your latest video and thought you'd be more likely to check this for questions.)
If I let the rabbits share a run, will they be able to find their own tote (and kindling tote) as there will obviously be 2 tunnels into run. Would it present a danger to young bunnies just born if the non-mother rabbit had access to them? Thank you.
Boy that's a tough one. Rabbits do live in warrens which have many different tunnels that intertwine but Females get very territorial over their area. They get defensive over their litters. They may attack a doe that comes too close. In most cases they have their litter in an isolated area and bury it so it doesn't give off any scent and no animal can detect it. That said, there's colony raising situations where every rabbit seems to learn their place so I wouldn't think it'd be a problem as long as the neutral zone(the Run) is big enough and you had multiple totes on each end. We live in Georgia. It gets very hot and humid here. The nights aren't much cooler than the days. How can we beat the heat? Can we get a bigger battery or a backup to use at night to run the fans 24/7?

Hey Bobby thanks always for your great information! You talk about the amount of feed to give our rabbits. So I have baby Rex rabbits at 4 weeks now there eating all they can now, pellets and Timothy and no fresh anything. So when you a curtain amount I’m assuming that’s per bunny. Are you feeding each separate or calculating everyone and they have a free for all? Thanks
When they start eating pellet around 3-4 weeks old I'll put as much in as I think they can eat in a day. I want them to eat as much as they want I don't start cutting it back until I wean them around 6-7 weeks. I then cut it back to 1 cup a day per rabbit and that's only if they'll eat that much.

Have you considered using a timer instead of an on/off switch?
I have. The switch is strictly to preserve power but not necessary. some folks like to run the batteries down and cool their rabbits at night when it’s more comfortable. This system is set up specifically for beginners. Small scale. Easy to follow. digital solar controllers, Which I’ve used in the past, work well. Some are a bit difficult to set so I’d take some time to pick the right controller.
@@TheRabbitryCenter We have a similar setup in our quail hut, but on commercial power(for now). It has temperature/humidity settings as well as a timer that I have added. We are just getting started on the 'Rabbitry' trail, but their cages will be just outside our quail hut - so it should be easy to add them to the same fan system. I have watched several of your videos, and look forward to learning more from you in the future! Thanx!
I think you can save a lot of wire and power It loses power per foot of wire so one set of wire running it all works best ?

When its a cloudy day and the panel isn't putting out any energy to the regulator, can you disconnect and run directly off the battery or do you need to physically attach the load of the fans to the battery? Thank you
I think I answered my own question. The solar charger controller has an inverter inside and charges the battery through the solar panel and the load actually runs off of the battery so on a cloudy day you will automatically be running on the battery just not charging the battery as quickly.

I'm dyslexic and not good with numbers. I'm interested in building the system for 35 enclosures with the intention of leaving the fans run full time and or have couple of Lights I can turn on to check on them at night. How many of each item do I need to order? Example how many solar will I need, how many batteries will I need, how many terminals will I need, Etc.? Once I know how many of what I need and have it in front of me I should be able to figure out how to wire it.

It's all about your battery. Amp hours.
Here's some info-
A 12 volt 105 AH battery can supply (under perfect conditions and to 100% discharge) 12 x 105, or 1260 Watt-hours (1.26 kWh).

I live in East Texas USA and even our nights are hot. Sadly, my rabbits are dropping like flies right now. I'm sure just because of the Heat. I've been raising them indoors for the past two years. So they are used to an air-conditioned room 24/7. I moved them outside for the first time this year for what I had hoped would be easier Maintenance Cleaning around the enclosures and to give me room to remodel my house and bug bomb the house without worry of poisoning the rabbits. Sadly soon after moving them outside they have begun dying faster than ever.
@@littlekingcobrasden4217 I'm sorry to hear about that. Well with the extreme heat you experience I think it would be more beneficial to have cooling totes than fans. Don't get me wrong every little bit helps but the cooling totes will always be around 10-15 degrees cooler due to the surrounding insulation of dirt and it'll be like escaping to the cool down stairs.
How many rabbit cages do you have?
@@TheRabbitryCenter I'm in the process of building a new set of enclosures that will be four wide and 3 tall 10 ft wide × 7-1/2ft tall × 30" deep front to back. It will be housed inside my biggest chicken coop for shelter of rain and sun as well as from cats foxes snakes and other vermin. Currently because so many rabbits have died I'm down to three enclosures in use at the moment. I only have one male rabbits left and he acts like he doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing with the dose. I only have one female that is a known breeder and three other females that have never bread yet. My goal is to have a minimum of 20 dose and two bucks at any given time. Here lately Tractor Supply has been out of stock of the 30" x 10' 16 Gauge Galvanized Cage Wire 1" x 1/2" Mesh that I used to build mine closures. I asked to make that it will require 8 to 10 more rolls to finish building them. Even the supplier I buy from eBay has been out of stock lately. I did just find yesterday someone on Amazon has some and I ordered 6 rolls I'm waiting for them to arrive. And I will be trying something do to me. I've been using hog rings in hog pliers to build them but I just recently learned about Jay clips and J clip pliers so I've ordered and received 5 lb of J clips in order to pair of pliers to give that a try see if it makes it easier assembling them. If you have someplace I could send photos or short videos of what I have I'd be happy to share. Also by moving the larger enclosure inside the chicken coop I will have a 55 gallon water supply I can tie into. Soon that 55 gallon wash supply will be tied into a 3000 gallon water supply. So in total when I am done building enclosures I will have a minimum of 22 enclosures. And this look like a neat idea to hang a few fans around the chicken coop as well for the chickens to enjoy when I get more chickens. This is why in my original message I was asking for help knowing how many of what to buy for a total of 35 enclosures. This will allow room for the chickens to have a couple fans and future enclosures I will be building.
Bobby if I get a 100 watt solar panel can I run my cage fans and a couple of lights in my barn?
You bet you can set up a great power system but you'd need one more thing and that's an inverter. This device turns your DC power into AC which is what our homes use. I apologize if I'm mentioning something you're already aware of.
I have bought everything you listed to buy. I have watched the video at last 20 times to get all of this (I have NO wiring experience). I think I have everything but the panel hook up. I have 2 panels, but I just do not understand what you did. I think see the multiple prong black connector cut in half on a connector panel. It looks like you have all the red wires ( from the solar panels) to 1 end and the black to the other. Did you them run a whole new wire from the red and black ends to the solar controller? I don’t understand this wire setup, but if that is what I need ok. Please respond right away. Help. 🤷🏻♀️
You can hook all the rabbit fans up to the terminals on the blocks -all the blacks go to the black terminal block, and all the Reds go to the red terminal block -you then run a positive and negative wire to the solar charge controller load or power terminal(this is a small pic of a light bulb on the solar charge controller in most cases)you run a wire from your solar panels To your solar charge controller it should have a picture for your panel
If you don’t have a charged up battery, you can run a wire from the solar panel directly to the terminal blocks that the Rabbit fans are hooked up to. But this is only temporary because you can overload the computer fans that’s why you use the solar charge controller in the first place but it won’t operate correctly unless you have a full charged battery

You can use one big one and just run it straight to your solar charge controller never mind combining if it makes it easier

If you need fans only for summer - why you need battery? Or you need fans in night too?
Sometimes need fans at night. But I'm in Texas. Bobby is in Michigan, so I don't know about him.
Im in Latvia :) here just come summer with 20c at day and 12c at night :D usualy we have max. 25-27c in hot days.
@@uldiss175 Oh! I wish! I hate the heat! And here, if it is 32°c in the summer, it is a bearable day as long as the humidity isn't too high, which it nearly always is. But it very often gets to between 37° - 40.56°c with a 70 % and above humidity level. UGH.
The humidity is hard on me because I'm from California where it seldom gets humid at all. The heat there can still be miserable as it's as hot where I was living as it is here in Texas.

Take it apart and try putting it back together in the opposite order also try charging your battery as well to make sure that’s not the issue

Ok. This is weird. I just bought 5 of these last week and now I can't find the product in amazon. The same link from 2019 is also a 12 V. The company either sold out of them or changed the product that links up. I just took the 5 fans out of the box to make sure they are all 12 V.

I'm not great with math. Do you think if I had a 50W solar panel and a 12V 35 AH battery I could run up to 6 of those fans all day and overnight? I understand you're not supposed to run the battery much lower than 50%. I live in Ohio and would have as much sun light as your set up has (possibly more).
