while i admit the qol differences are great in this they actually detract from the difficulty in a major way, it's hard not to just turn off random encounters while you explore, because the rate is just frustrating at times, but doing so also means that getting through dungeons is just easy. you fight as much as you need to beat the boss, then move on. you also collect all the best items in the dungeon easily without the trial and error and risk of the battles. same applies to the ability to quicksave anywhere. it was nice to replay but it didn't feel like any sort of accomplishment to get through whereas the original punished the hell out of you for going in unprepared.
On the flipside - you can make the game way more challenging for yourself by minimizing the number of battles you participate in. It also makes learning the game a LOT less frustrating. I don't know FF1 half as well as I do the other games, and it's incredibly replayable - having just learned the ins and outs of it on my first playthrough of the Pixel Remaster, I started a new save with a different party composition immediately. I'mma be real, I decided to give FF remasters a go a week ago, I just beat FF1 (honestly started using the walkthrough by the time I got the Levistone because the random wandering around and one-shotting everything via auto-battle anyways was becoming tedious) and for a +35 y/o game, yeah it's not bad, but as far playing it nowadays goes it's extremely basic and story is practically non-existing. I hate the idea of even the boss fights being a cakewalk outside of maybe the last few, but even then you just hasten and strenghten your auto-attackers as BLM and spam heal/protection as WHM and it's practically impossible to lose. Ironically I'm currently playing through FF2 and while I heard people hate that one for it's gameplay systems, I'm about 5 hours in and think it's FAAAAAAAAR better so far. So much more interactive and fleshed out in every way, there's an actually story this time around too, it's not bad.
As a life-long FF fan (my first was FF'2' on snes), it makes me so incredibly happy to hear that it was the FF7 remake that got you into this series and playing the classics for the first time. I'll be looking forward to you playing the original FF7, if you decide to!
I bought The pixel remaster for my iPhone. I’ve been having a blast with the xp boost option. Grinding a bit here and there and blowing away the enemies. It’s a solid 2 weeks for fun for 12 bucks! Well worth it!
Oh, my and my friends in grade school loved this game back in the day. Back when the SNES was something we were just reading was coming in Nintendo Power. And that was the old incredibly hard NES version that didn't let you take most of your magic items into battle and wouldn't even automatically grab a new target in the middle of the attack phase if one of the characters killed the current one.
Lol the famicom was the original version of the NES before it was redesigned and renamed. I suppose that's true. The famicom was just the Japanese version of the NES. Its name came from family computer.
I have yet to play the pixel the remaster, but my biggest disappointment is the return to the spell charges system. As you said, magic damage isn't great in this game, but the MP system in the GBA and a few other the remakes made it a bit more useful in random encounters. I know they were going for authenticity to the original game, but an option to use the MP system would be cool. It really helped balance the classes.
Star Ruby is obtained from the Vampire you encounter. You can only challenge the Fiend of Earth after giving the Star Ruby to the Golem and speaking with the Sage beyond.
If you don't have a Black Belt/Master in your party, always being fed the FAST spell, then you're truly missing out. I wonder if the remakes included the number grid puzzle that can be accessed while using the ship (boat)...
Stranger of paradise is definitely not a bad game, was definitely one of the better rpgs of 2022, in a year jam packed with rpgs it was one of the better ones, probably had the best job system in the entire FF franchise along with a deep, customizable and cosmetic loot system that actually shows differences in different equipment you equip unlike most JRPGs where no matter what armor you equip shows no cosmetic changes, thus has been a massive pet peeve of mine for years and team ninja got it right with stranger of paradise
I do want to give Strangers of Paradise another try after playing FF1 now, I played it at launch and the job system/combat were the best parts for sure, but the rest was a bit bland to me. I am glad to hear people liked it though
Jack Garland is one of my favorite characters because of Strangers and would love a FF1 style prequel of Strangers as a new game plus mode to tie the two together
Hey very cool review but for future reviews I strongly encourage you to test out your voice and the music because quite frankly the music was way too loud and it was hard for me to listen to what you had to say the music was so loud it was essentially drowning out your voice
Here lies link is not in original Japanese version, that says here lies Roto (Erdrick) from dragon quest (at least all the Japanese versions I played, I never finished the original famicon version)
Was FINAL FANTASY Actually Any GOOD? Yes, when it came out it was awesome. I had Dragon Warrior 2 and Ultima IV for the NES also, but FF was my favorite of the three.
Not too hard to figure out why Xbox didn't get the pixel remasters at all. Sony is paying off Square Enix to not port them to Xbox. After all...Xbox was supposed to get FF7R a few years ago since it was supposed to be a timed exclusive originally. Didn't get FF XIV on Xbox either.
Huh, I thought Microsoft kept the Pixel Remasters and XIV off Xbox to nudge their fans towards PC. 😂 Could the Series X run FFXVI better than the PS5, which infamously cooks when running a part of the game?
@autobotstarscream765 I made the decision to jump to pc recently myself. My gaming laptop was nearing retirement after 10 years, and couldn't afford both a new pc and new console. Not sure how well the Series will run 16. I made the Switch to Pc from X1 thanks in part to RE4 Remake
If you like Final Fantasy 1, I highly recommend Dragon Quest 3. I think it takes the formula of Final Fantasy 1 and perfects it. It has party customization like this game, but I just think the world map is better, the fights are more fun, and it has a lot of charm.
@@sunderwire I see. It’s just, the Famicom was before my time as well, but due to my interest in videogames in general I still knew about it and lots of other old consoles 🤔
There was a reason for these older games being far more difficult in the older days of the NES/SNES..... Cost of the games. Final Fantasy on the NES was $75.00 on the NES new for me. VI was $79.00 on the SNES new. (So please no more complaining about paying that much for all 6 of them) What this meant was not a whole of ability to buy games all the time for parents. You either got the new game for Christmas or your birthday. These games needed to last. SIDE NOTE: Pixel Remaster IS back to the base game. But is still done in the PS1 FWD "Easy Mode" release. This game was 10x more difficult on the NES. 10x more expensive to get things. Hardly any of the items in this game are in the original. And 10x more level grinding. Seriously in XIII I could stand at a save point, and see the save point ahead and behind me. WAY TOO EASY. I do love these. I finished I, half way through VI, and in the middle of V. Pixel Remaster are indeed the closest to the originals I have seen.....without putting my originals in.
Im late to the party, but I loved SoP. Gameplay is solid, but the post game grinding is bad I agree. The plot is uh... I understand not liking it, but it did meet my expectations and i like whats there.
Yeah, I heard a lot of people actually did like SoP. I thought it looked and felt a lot like a PS3 game in terms of quality but the job system in that game was amazing. I played it before playing FF1 though so maybe it's worth me re-playing one day from a new point of view
I couldn't get into it. The random loot bothered me too much. I loved the concept of the game, but the weird loot and leveling mechanics ruined it for me.
I really wish modern players would play the original games not a remastered version. They would cry and break their tvs and systems with how hard they were.
That would be nice. I'd like to own the originals. Problem no one wants to pay collector prices for a system that's 40 years old. I'd love to own physical copies of Chrono Trigger and FF3(snes) but I'm not shelling that money out.
You can't call yourself a real fan until you play it. That's not really meant to be a "No True Scotsman" thing or nothing. But it's just that it's not the horse I'd suggest you ride on your first rodeo, you get me? The Pixel Remaster is the best version, but you should play the 8-bit versiom first just to see what it was really like. There's no shame in using walkthroughs. That game came with tons of booklets, maps, amd guides. Pretty much everyone who played it back in the day had SOME kind of help.
I got the NES game on launch day at a toys r us. It was my first JRPG, before then it was Ultima and so forth. This is my favorite FF game of all time, but not the Pixel Remaster; that’s not FF1. Pixel Remaster is a nerfed FF1. The standard settings still gave you twice the XP and the goods at stores cost half as much. In NES FF1 the only healing item you had was a potion that healed for 30hp and you could carry 99. It was a way more difficult game, you had to grind, and trash mobs could kill you. There was no Cid in FF1; he was added retroactively. It was a great game. Strategy was very important because if you killed a target before others could attack it, they wouldn’t retarget; they lost a turn. I encourage you to play real FF1 if you want the true FF1 experience. It was a challenge for the uninitiated. Also not sure why you are trash talking Stranger; that game was the first action based JRPG game I played that had good combat. Stranger also had the ultimate toxic masculinity action hero for someone who grew up in the 80s watching Schwarzenegger and Stallone to truly appreciate. I love Jack Garland; he’s a treasure and my favorite FF character now.
I'm 2 minutes in and you already lost me. Not from anything you said about the game, but the background music you put in was so loud compared to you talking that my brain could only focus on the music and was pretty much ignoring everything you were saying. Might just be a me problem but thought I'd mention it in a polite way at least. Best of luck in future videos.
I think FF1 should be experienced in the NES/Famicom. While the gameplay is definitely more broken, the graphics are not accurately translated over to modern systems and a lot of the charm is lost. The floating palace is the best example, most versions make it a generic castle in the sky, wheras in the original it is a space station. I also think the color palette of the remakes are too cheery and washed out, the colors of the original really stick with you in a way that the modern remakes do not.
Great video, man! Very high quality. I recently released a video on FF1 Pixel Remaster playthrough review you should check it out! Releasing one on the FF2 Pixel Remaster here in a couple days. Great job though and looking forward to more of your content. Love it.
@@sunderwire thank you and yes they are. Honestly, I have never played any FF games outside of Western releases so the FF2 and FF3 I played were the ones for SNES. So it's fun to pick up and play uncharted territory. Beginning on playing FF3 pixel remaster here this weekend.
Yeah. That's exactly why I've stopped playing new FF games. The newest one I've played was the dumpster fire that was 13. Still playing DQ every chance I get, though I generally mute the music nowadays since it's always the same music from game to game.
Square actually cannot create final fantasy, dragon quest, or mana games for Microsoft systems because of contracts and copyrights with Nintendo and Sony dating back before Microsoft existed in the home console space
FF1 and other classic FF entries are already obsolete. 8hrs of realistic cinematic interactive movies with 2hrs of actual gameplay IS the new STANDARD for videogames QUALITY. story should be spoonfed to players by watching INTERACTIVE MOVIES, not by reading cryptic messages across the game playthrough.
Only if you play the PS1 version, and play on the original difficulty (Hard). Otherwise, there's nothing that makes this game interesting in my opinion. In that case, you're better off playing newer entries that focus more on the story. Honestly, the way you're playing it's just grinding achievements, which looks super boring, instead of a tense game of resource management and survival. You do you, but I would never dare recommend this way to others.
Well I'll admit grinding trophies is boring, grinding levels and progressing in the game is not boring, I've always been a gameplay over story gamer, especially in RPGs, min maxing, battle systems, leveling, equipment and skills, abilities and magic have always been what drives me forward in RPGs, yes story and characters are important but not more important than gameplay, at the end of the day we are talking about games, so of course gameplay is going to be a Main focus for gamers, what do ya know, gamers care about gameplay in video games, who would of thunk?
@@mathewhosier9739 Nothing wrong with that! Like I said, the only thing that makes FF1 fun is the gameplay. And that only works if you play one of the older versions, because the gameplay doesn't make you think in newer versions. Personally, I don't think any Final Fantasy ever forces you to grind, not even the first ones. The fun in FF1 is choosing which piece of equipment to buy, which spells to take for your next dungeon, decide whether or not you can finish the dungeon in one go, or if you need to exit to stock up on items. All that is great stuff. I never said gameplay isn't important. It's just that FF1 Pixel Remaster neither has good story OR gameplay. It sucks out all the good gameplay, and it never had an engaging story. If you prefer story, go with the later games. If you prefer engaging gameplay, go with either the later games (they have great gameplay too) OR the older versions of FF1. The new versions are just lifeless tutorials.
If anything the older games focused more on story because they were extremely limited by what they could do with the gameplay, but as time went on and hardware got better they have focused more and more on gameplay, seems to me that the older games focused more on story, characters and world building while the newer games focus more on combat, progression and exploration, there's a reason why developers, coders and artists get paid more than writers in most cases, again, not saying isn't important but it's clearly not as much of a focus as it used to be when story was all they had due to limitations, I'm just saying story and writing overall is much less of a focus than it used to be, and there are outliers, especially in the indie world, but for the most part gameplay is the main focus as it should be seeing these are video games
@@mathewhosier9739 Huh? Since FF4, the games began to have more cutscenes, more scripted battles, more plot points, more twists, more characters, and more character development. How is that less story than "Warriors of Light, restore the Crystals to Grace!"? Also, personally, I think being so static in what games "should be" only limits their potential. Games like Outer Wilds do so much more than just being "video games with gameplay" and they're better for it.
@@mathewhosier9739 The games got progressively more story heavy after 4 and 10 had infamously long cutscene's. 16 is probably the most cutscene heavy mainline game.

It's probably going to suck, but i'll try it one day
Stranger of paradise is definitely not a bad game, was definitely one of the better rpgs of 2022, in a year jam packed with rpgs it was one of the better ones, probably had the best job system in the entire FF franchise along with a deep, customizable and cosmetic loot system that actually shows differences in different equipment you equip unlike most JRPGs where no matter what armor you equip shows no cosmetic changes, thus has been a massive pet peeve of mine for years and team ninja got it right with stranger of paradise
I do want to give Strangers of Paradise another try after playing FF1 now, I played it at launch and the job system/combat were the best parts for sure, but the rest was a bit bland to me. I am glad to hear people liked it though
Jack Garland is one of my favorite characters because of Strangers and would love a FF1 style prequel of Strangers as a new game plus mode to tie the two together
i have to agree , had a blast playing it
Hey very cool review but for future reviews I strongly encourage you to test out your voice and the music because quite frankly the music was way too loud and it was hard for me to listen to what you had to say the music was so loud it was essentially drowning out your voice
Yeah it definitely was, gonna make sure its better in future videos
I’ve beaten FF 1 over 30 times. Currently playing it with my son and showing him what made RPGs
Still one of the most favs games even to today.
I have the Play Asia Pixel Remaster and there's no "trophies" on my version. Is that normal?
Here lies link is not in original Japanese version, that says here lies Roto (Erdrick) from dragon quest (at least all the Japanese versions I played, I never finished the original famicon version)
You use to get rewards for playing the 15 puzzle game fast enough. They removed that though.
Thief’s purpose is to become a ninja which is definitely not weight
i finished psp version in 2021, and it was pretty good....
Could the Series X run FFXVI better than the PS5, which infamously cooks when running a part of the game?
@autobotstarscream765 I made the decision to jump to pc recently myself. My gaming laptop was nearing retirement after 10 years, and couldn't afford both a new pc and new console.
Not sure how well the Series will run 16. I made the Switch to Pc from X1 thanks in part to RE4 Remake
First time I played this game was when I got FF1 and FF2 on the PSP
If you like Final Fantasy 1, I highly recommend Dragon Quest 3. I think it takes the formula of Final Fantasy 1 and perfects it. It has party customization like this game, but I just think the world map is better, the fights are more fun, and it has a lot of charm.
final fantasy one (PSP) was among the best games i played recently.
This game is still one of my favorite games of all time :)
You have chaos shrine and sunken shrine backwards.
Personally im a fan of 2 and 3, the American 2 and 3 more but this one started it all for me this and dragon warrior
You.... didn't know what a Famicom was...?
Sadly I didn't😆 The first console I played a game on was the PS2, I never got to experience the original FF games when they came out
@@sunderwire I see.
(So please no more complaining about paying that much for all 6 of them)
What this meant was not a whole of ability to buy games all the time for parents.
Your first final fantasy is REMAKE ? thats insane
Theres some really good versions of this hex edited, of the remake with like 12 classes, if you know your emulation.
I'm running FF1 as a D&D campaign at the moment, and the story made by my players is doing weird stuff to my perception of this game :P
Can you talk about ff6 trophies?
Hey, I appreciate the heads up about the volume, I’ll make sure to keep this in mind for the future. It’s always good to get another’s perspective :)
"Was FINAL FANTASY PIXEL REMASTER Actually Any GOOD? | A 1 Year Retrospective"
There we go, I fixed that for you. You're welcome.
Great video, man! Very high quality. I recently released a video on FF1 Pixel Remaster playthrough review you should check it out! Releasing one on the FF2 Pixel Remaster here in a couple days. Great job though and looking forward to more of your content. Love it.
Thanks! And that’s awesome, good luck on the next video. They are great games
@@sunderwire thank you and yes they are. Honestly, I have never played any FF games outside of Western releases so the FF2 and FF3 I played were the ones for SNES. So it's fun to pick up and play uncharted territory. Beginning on playing FF3 pixel remaster here this weekend.
Personally, I love turn-based RPGs, and hate that the Final Fantasy series pretty much abandoned that style and changed fully to action shit.
Why was FFX 13 on Xbox 360 then?
FF1 and other classic FF entries are already obsolete.
8hrs of realistic cinematic interactive movies with 2hrs of actual gameplay IS the new STANDARD for videogames QUALITY.
story should be spoonfed to players by watching INTERACTIVE MOVIES, not by reading cryptic messages across the game playthrough.
LMAO
No
Yes
0:21 Ewww 'Sarah'? What are normal, western names doing in a Final Fantasy game? That could never happen.
@@mathewhosier9739
The games got progressively more story heavy after 4 and 10 had infamously long cutscene's. 16 is probably the most cutscene heavy mainline game.
i despise ff7R, 15 and 16. LFG turn based. hey if u have an xbox try lost odyssey. it's basically the last FF-esque turn based game not named dragon quest lol
I’ve heard Lost Odyssey is amazing. It’s definitely on my list of games to play
Hell yes FF2 however still SUCKS.
Still beating yourself to d3ath, vegh?
just because you dont have proper understanding of game's mechanic and design doesnt mean the game s*cks like your whole miserable life.
grow up clowney :)
I’m guessing you never played a SaGa game?
No and I never will either but in the Saga games you don' really need to KILL/Attack your OWN party TO increase your HP at all.
Ofcourse it is, alot of Good older rpgs ar still worth playning. Stop care so much about the grafics.
Gotta work on that punctuation bruh
