I feel this way too much. I first played it when I was ten, and absolutely fell in love with it. I've literally bought every port of it, just to show my love for this beautiful game.
@@beerious8392 Also my first Final Fantasy title, played it soon after it came out, so over 30 years ago (yikes!). Arguably FF6 is probably a better title overall, but FF4 is still my favorite just based on the story and my nostalgia. Also a bit weird in that I had a NES for many years but never played the NES Final Fantasy until much later on, so FF4 is the one I always go back to.
I originally played the SNES version and one part of the game I think was MUCH better was when you’re sent to Mist, the king didn’t give you a bomb ring, it’s just an innocuous package, and is just called “package” in the inventory. It make it a lot more shocking when the bomb burst out, and better contextualizes Cecil’s reaction. They keep calling it a bomb ring in newer translations, which is a real shame. It gives it away
Definitely in my top 3 FF games for story, especially when I played it at release and there were no guides, or internet to look up clues that I can remember. I do remember getting Nintendo Power and hoping there were going to be tips and tricks for games I was playing at the time. Thanks for the memories :).
I've only played the North American SNES release - the version in which the difficulty was decreased for North American gamers at the time. I enjoyed it for the most part but had a lot of trouble on the last two dungeons. Is the Pixel Remaster based on this easier North American version, or the original Super Famicom/GBA/PSP difficulty?
It’s based off the original SNES version but Pixel Remaster games have some tweaks/adjustments make the game feel a bit more modern, so they’re kind of their own version
I beat the pixel remaster of IV a couple weeks back. It is definitely more of a challenge than the US SNES version. Lunar Subterrane and the Crystal Palace are fairly challenging in the early 40s. What I did was take multiple runs to clear out all of the chests with the end game gear (enter the dungeon, fight every single encounter, get to a chest, fight the monster in the box, equip the new gear, teleport out, buy up all the elixirs I could afford, repeat). It took a few play sessions to do over the course of a week, but about midway through I was strong enough to use the cursor memory, auto battle, and auto battle continuation settings to turn off the brain and just use a map guide to get to where I wanted to go without paying much attention to the actual random encounters.
There is one detail every single remake of FFVI fails get right, including this one. In the original version of the game during his scriped battle, Golbez (and Zemus later) take almost no damage from the Fire3, Ice3, etc. That's why Tellah gets desperate and casts Meteo, which goes through his armor and does a full 9999 damage to him. Every single remake they've done have missed this detail, so while the combat dialogue conveys this, the actual numbers you see do not.
Nice video. While I still consider Final Fantasy 4 to be a good game, I can understand if in today's day and age some people don't want to play it because they find it "too basic"; especially when they are plenty of other games they can look to for their "classic Final Fantasy fix" or "JRPG fix".
Playing FF 4 to me is a lot like listening to real old school roots blues music. I can see its influence on everything modern that I enjoy but I can completely understand if someone doesnt wanna sit around and listen to an old blues tune.
Funnily enough, while this is undoubtedly a good game, I played FF4 and FF2 around the same time as each other on PS1 (I'd first played FF6 on the SNES, and of course already played FF7), and actually ended up enjoying FF2 more. They're definitely built a similar structure to each other, but I had a lot of fun customizing my FF2 cast with some early game grinding to make their stats and abilities fit different rolls so they'd continue to develop in those direction over the course of the game. And only having one rotating guest party member felt like the perfect balance of that kind of style, so you still had a core to work off of. Also, FF6's cast rotating felt better because it was typically a result of different parties going on different adventures instead of the main character constantly gaining and dropping traveling companions. ...FF4 feels like a D&D campaign with too many scheduling conflicts, the DM having to come up with more and more outrageous excuses for the party members to get split up and swapped out (which has it's own comical charm, but gets tiring with all the fake-out deaths, like it was specifically intentionally aping FF2's actual character deaths all over the place thinking about it after the fact). I actually kind of dropped my original FF4 playthrough mid-to-late-way to play FF2 to completion before returning to finish FF4.
I plan on playing through each main series games since I pretty much played seven and up and also four much later in life but it's my favorite series. Great video dude.
Looking at this now: did you use a colour filter to saturate the colours of the video footage more, or did it come out that way when recording? I've been playing on Switch and I can't recall it ever looking quite this saturated.
I used an elgato capture card for some of the footage and it came out more saturated compared to using the default PS5's capture card, so it was definitely due to the recording, it's not that saturated in game :)
Ahh I love a good FF4 commentary. I'm biased, as it is my personal favorite in the series! Hope to one day see you tackle the DS/PC version and compare the two and will eagerly be watching your other Final Fantasy reteospectives! The thought bubble feature in the 3d version is perhaps my favorite addition of all time and I find it adds SO much in the way of immerson. Would love to one day hear your thoughts on Interlude and After Years as well one day ❤
The mechanics are solid and while theres no job system in place each character has their own strengths and weaknesses and thanks to the designers you always have a balanced party. But what really sets this game apart is the story. Even though it gets dark( very dark sometimes) you build up emotional investment in each character. Even the simple charms like your spoony bard running and hiding every time he gets hurt gives the character depth that connects the story to the gameplay. While you loose some characters and spoiler save most of them in the end. You still see how the world is changed by your actions and how those you cant save impacts the story.
Doing a playthrough of the Pixel Remaster as we speak it definitely has a lot of replay value and this is coming from someone who didnt like RPGs growing up
I'm glad you liked it. I've been into RPGs since I was a kid back in 1990. My first was Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in America), which led me to Final Fantasy. The first Final Fantasy really clicked with me and was a big jump from the original Dragon Quest. Final Fantasy IV (FF2 in North America) was groundbreaking. It's hard 30 years after it's release to communicate how big of a leap forward this game was in terms of story and character development. It might seem primitive by today's standards, but Final Fantasy 4 was the first console RPG to have such emotional impact and focus on the personal growth and internal struggles of it's characters. Before FFIV RPGs would give you direction such as visit ___ town to speak with ___npc who tells you to explore ___dungeon to retrieve ___McGuffin in order to proceed to the next sequence.
@@nesoukkefka1741 FF2 had a little more narrative depth than the first, but it was greatly limited by the amount of data available on a Famicom cartridge. Several characters join your party under various circumstances in FF2, with a couple dying during key story beats. These moments as well as the ongoing saga with childhood friend Leon are the highlight of FF2's attempt to create a compelling story IMO. Final Fantasy IV was able to make such a large leap in this regard mostly due to the expanded capacity of the new console. The Super Famicom could support games that took up megabytes of data compared to Famicom titles that topped out in the kilobytes.
13:08 the king isn’t being mind controlled, the king you first see is the water fiend Cagnazzo in disguise. 14:16 Golbez didn’t summon him, as far as I know he attacks your ship because he wants Rydia
I played ff7 for the first time two weeks ago and loved i it. Now I’m looking for another one to play and I’m choosing between 4 or 9 but this video helped me to choose. Thank you!
For me its the best in the entire FF series even without the nostalgica glasses, since i indeed played it in 1992/93 on the SNES as my first FF. It has the best story and story is king in Final Fantasy - or lets say, it had the best story that i would enjoy and have fun with the kind of stories i like and prefere. In which FF was the protagonist also the evil guy? And which game you know had a better redemption story? The first part of this game is just a masterpiece in story telling and it does not even needed CGI. Also, only here you meet Golbez who is basicly Final Fantasy's Darth Vader and closely releated to the protagonist of the story. Very enchanting music scores and world building, very fast combat, too. The best game, every year.
The final fantasy 4 3D remake is such a cool upgrade to a game that is already a classic jrpg. It’s also pretty tough, probably one of the tougher final fantasies on a casual playthrough, which is a nice change of pace for the series.
I appreciate your playthrough! I'm glad you finally had a chance to play through the game. Watching this playthrough makes me long for the original SNES FF2. I played that game A LOT as a young teenager. The one thing I miss from the SNES version was the original translated dialogue. It was quirky at times, but I thought it added to the story quite a bit. I felt that the cleaned up dialogue of the PR version takes away from some of the experience of the original. They took a lot of liberties with the updated dialogues and dumbed down some of it, which is unfortunate. I was especially upset that the PR version messes up much of the dialogue leading up to the final battle, including the second most iconic line in the game (behind "you spoony bard", of course), where Cecil in the original proclames "Zeromus!... for all the people of earth... I will destroy you!" The PR's rendering of "Zeromus! I won't lose! I...can't!" is extremely weak compared to the original. Also, as mentioned in other comments, toward the start of the game in the PR version, the king gives Cecil a "bomb ring", which kind of gives away the secret! I liked that in the original SNES, he just received an innocuous-sounding "Package", which then "automatically opens" as soon as he and Kain enter Mist.
I thought it was a great game! I have 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 15 . . . but when I saw your video, I looked through my inventory and realized, I didn't have it! I have played it on an emulator twice, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Is it as good as V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII (haven't played XV yet)? It's hard to say. But again, I really enjoyed it! Thanks for the video. I never would have realized I didn't have it. I just ordered a used copy off Amazon for 3ds.
FFIV is like the only game that u don’t have to think to hard about. No JP or AP. No buying skills or spells. No job shifting. No character changes. Just Exp and Cecil/Rydia soul crushing enemies. (There is that thing at level 70 on but pffft) It’s the game ppl should play first imo
I find that everybody's favs are their first ones that they play. Mines are emulated FFV followed by PS FF7. I think it's because it's our first introduction and experience. Great memories when I replay them. I've played all the old 2D ones (as likely the same with you) and they are all great games but the first one I played has those memories of wows and feelings of this is epic. 👍
You go to the Tower of Zot after giving Kane the earrh crystal. Babel comes after going to the underworld after getting Kane and Rosa back in the Tower of Zot.
Honestly - the extra dungeons and content in each of the games that had them were pretty bad. They were clearly tacked on and added little to nothing to the experience. I don't mind that they didn't port them. Like in FF1 on the GBA - even with a patch that brings the game balance more in line with the NES, you can either have a balanced experience through the main story or you can become ridiculously overpowered by doing the side content while it's relevant. In FFIV, the extra dungeons come so late, and the inability to change party members was clearly not part of the original design - I understand if people are bummed about their exclusion and prefer versions of the games that have the extra content, but if you haven't played FFIV before, the Pixel Remaster is the way to go. (That or the 3D Steam version.)
These achievements seem fun, even the bestiary I played the gba version of this but didnt do any of the extra stuff, it was fun but not too replayable really, at least the music was awesome Id like to see what you think of ff5, probably the most replayable final fantasy
Before watching I think the thing that made ffiv so great was that it was (imo) the first time Square got both combat and story telling right. The remakes help i-iii, but iv did them both right the first time.
Question: Final Fantasy IV has Lunarians in it? I'm kind of disappointed buying the 3D remake because they didn't include the extra campaign. Now I have thoughts buying it or not. I'm just here for the Lunarians.
When you're talking about the extra campaign do you mean The Lunar Ruins or the extra story sequel? Because if you're looking for the Lunar ruins unfortunately it's only available in the PSP port The Complete Collection and FF4 Advance. If you're looking for more information on the Lunarians themselves, I can confidently say The After Years 3d version should fulfill your craving at least in part as they are featured more there. Hope this helps!
I never played FFIV on SNES back in the day so I don't have any nostalgia for it. I've gone back and played the GBA and DS versions over the years and found them... fine? The game being so rigid on party composition just and limited customisation just makes me feel like I'm mashing the confirm button for 20 hours. And the byzantine augment system did nothing to help that. Square more than fixed that in FFV though, oh boy. Slaps you with all the job customisation you can handle in the early to mid game. If you want to play an optimised cheesy party of bluemagic wielding rapid fire ninjas, you can. If you want to roleplay suboptimal thematic classes for each character, you can (Galuf is clearly a mystic knight who can use Gaia. Faris is a Theif who can summon (Syldra!), Butz Redmage/bard, Lenna is a Whitemage/Time Mage) or just use whichever sprites look cool (Lenna's monk, Kriles beserker, Butz' dancer etc). You're always making choices and adjustments that really matter.
i just wanted to say hiding in frame time 1:11, and would not think people would run into that yeah ok, FFX sorry FFVI was the best one ever created. that all i have to say , also the video was good
Yeah, I really like FFVI as well, but then there is VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII . . . it's hard for me to pick, because I enjoyed them all so much. I think XII might be my favorite, but I really haven't played some of the others in years, and I haven't played FFVII Remake yet . . . though it is in the que.
The PSP remake is the best of both worlds. The upgraded script, lovely graphics, and stunning music, but without the punishing difficulty curve, annoying busywork of dealing with Augments, and the godawful voice direction in the cutscenes.
I grew up with FFIV and lived it at the time but FFIV is clearly the least replayable of the NES/SNES games and one of the games that aged the poorest Story Wise. The only element I think that stood above the rest was the music
Game just feels old when compared not only to other jrpgs series but Also to other games of the franchise,i finished final fantasy 2,Crisis Core and final fantasy tactics loved them all i am currently playing ff5 and it's great/underrated,all those games are better than 4 due to customization, better battle system and even story.
The pixel remasters are nice for graphics but for gameplay and items the PS1 version is the best and for the after years the Wii ware version is the best

Sorry but the 3d remake of 4 is the best version and best way to experience the game. All other versions are too easy.
I grew up on the SNES game...its like comfort food.
Ragnarok used to be Crystal Sword, i kinda like that better
You go to the Tower of Zot after giving Kane the earrh crystal. Babel comes after going to the underworld after getting Kane and Rosa back in the Tower of Zot.
Im glad i wasnt the only one who called him Cee-Sil instead of Ses-sil
This game got me hooked on RPG games when I was like 10.
Lol if u have played the 3d remake how do u still pronounce their names wrong lol XD
Final Fantasy at his best. The most memorable character, the best story developpment, great battle system, easily my favourite of the serie.
These achievements seem fun, even the bestiary
I played the gba version of this but didnt do any of the extra stuff, it was fun but not too replayable really, at least the music was awesome
Id like to see what you think of ff5, probably the most replayable final fantasy
Before watching I think the thing that made ffiv so great was that it was (imo) the first time Square got both combat and story telling right. The remakes help i-iii, but iv did them both right the first time.
I wish I could play this game for the first time again.
I was playing FF4PR on my PS4 and well...I've gotten like...4 goblin drops without even grinding, my first goblin dropped it. My luck I swear
Question: Final Fantasy IV has Lunarians in it? I'm kind of disappointed buying the 3D remake because they didn't include the extra campaign. Now I have thoughts buying it or not. I'm just here for the Lunarians.
Yeah you meet one of the Lunarians when you go to the moon and he explains their purpose
U gonna like after years i jus finished for the 1st time last month on the vita
this and secret of mana are my favorite JRPGs
This is the first Final Fantasy I ever beat as a kid. FF4 is an absolute classic and would benefit from a remake.
It's a good game. I specially enjoyed the GBA port because you could use whoever you wanted and you didn't have to stick with the main party.
You're always making choices and adjustments that really matter.
i just wanted to say hiding in frame time 1:11, and would not think people would run into that yeah ok, FFX sorry FFVI was the best one ever created. that all i have to say , also the video was good
Haha good eye. FF6 is amazing too!
SO AMAZING so special if you were playing this early 90s you know what a big deal this game was
I grew up with FFIV and lived it at the time but FFIV is clearly the least replayable of the NES/SNES games and one of the games that aged the poorest Story Wise.
The only element I think that stood above the rest was the music
Agreed. The fakeout deaths are the worst in this game they've ever been throughout the franchise.
One of the GOAT RPGs the story is timeless
im not really a fan of this game. weak story, really. i grew up on final fantasy 6 first. so, 4 was old news and very much inferior in quality.
Yea FF4 feels inferior in every way if you play FF6 first, happened to me too.
FFIV is not the best Final Fantasy, but it would be the one I would highly recommend being someone's first Final Fantasy
Did not even attempt to pronounce some of the names. "Barbara," lol.
Probably the most tragic of all the final fantasies where you lose the most people.
Is it that hard to call Barbariccia Barbariccia instead of Barbara?
FFIV the Crystal Game you know the game that got Super Mario RPG music.
Is a great game
FF4 is and always will be my one and only Best❤❤❤❤
FFX is the best FF
You goddamn right
Not even close to true.
"Golbez summons Leviathan"
He did not.
One of the best games of all time imo
The PSP version is the best IMO. I think the pixel remasters look worse that the original SNES versions.
I loved this game, so worth the platinum trophy :)
The pixel remasters are nice for graphics but for gameplay and items the PS1 version is the best and for the after years the Wii ware version is the best
And you get Jain back in the tower of zoo not babil
Zot
1992 all over again , i feel old
26:00 cool, the lunar whale took them to Africa
Ff10 is the best. Linear but still great a decade later. Cant bring myself to play hack n slash 16. Cant do it.....
not only was it good, it's one of the best.
I think 16 is fast becoming my favourite
The story is Amazing
I haven’t finished it yet but the combat, music and story are all fantastic in ff16 so far
16 is dogshit
@@sunderwirethe music is bland and forgettable outside of boss music, the combat is stupidly easy, and the story has horrible pacing, is full of plot holes and is shallow af
Are you joking? Is it a good game? Heck yes. Its the game that got me to loving rpgs
The story was even better than FF6 and I think it was the best among FF1-6.
Yes.
Had to stop watching after the 5th "and the Trophy pops", that got annoying real quick
Yes!
It had to have been good if it gave us 5, 6, skip, and 8.
Dam Han not do mecia
3d remake is the best way to play 4
It looks fun, I only played the intro for the 3d remake so far, but I really want to finish it, and the after years
ff4 3d remake is great
