I got to ski Alta 6 days a week for a season. I took a job at one of the lodges for the season pass. the only other way you could get a pass was to win a lottery, then pay 800 bucks. I used to get passed on the slopes by these guys in rust red jackets with the number 70 on the front. They were members of a ski club up there you had to be 70 to join. There's ambition for you, waiting till you old enough. Well now I'm 70.
How can I do that; I'm a seventy one year old former ski instructor. Skied Alta/Brighton and Taos Ski Valley years ago. Skiing is 90% mental! Young People: Don't miss out; get your head out of your cell phone!

A few years back, I was skiing the singles line at Snow Basin (I think it was Snow Basin maybe Powder Mtn). The senior man on the chair next to me was in his 80's and was a heart transplant recipient! The guy was laying down really nice turns and he was on his second heart! This boggled my mind and it was then and there that I swore I'd ski into my grey years even if it were only on groomers! Hope you got your number 70 race number. ;)
Never tire watching Angel Collinson and friends with their (always) insane runs down the steep and deep. And yet, Angel somehow makes it look so easy when in real time it just shows us what an accomplished Pro-Skier she is as she works out the best line and technique for both the conditions, and the run itself. GO ANGEL!

Especially since you’re hiking up your line. Those that do this know just how much that footpath can help aid you in direction on the descent. Cheers awesome runs.
The town of Alta is at the base of Mt. Superior. So this approach is actually less than four miles for the local residents. The father says it’s pretty nice to have this for a backyard.

Why is it called suicide chute? Looks like a pretty fun and straight forward gully. No extreme exposure, not extremely steep, not at extreme altitude...
You're probably a better skier than me but I skied it and found it at least a bit challenging. It's definitely not a "gully". It's for sure a couloir/chute.

Faces alta, the only time in my life I saw skiers buried in an avalanche was on superior while skiing alta. Really have to know your snow and steeps in little cotton wood. Love the video

I had to hit replay because I thought the guy said it's 4 mile approach. Turns out he did say that! He either purposely lied or he has absolutely no concept of distance. I've skied this chute and the approach is less than a mile. Makes no sense why the guy would say that!

1:20 "Angel's confident in the conditions" right after describing wind-loaded slap on top of hardpack? Lucky it didn't sluff off in a big way. That said though nice freakin' line, nice tracks. I guess with Jim's expertise they had the avy risk dialed in but really this is a dangerous mission, much more so than it looks. I remember the year I was at Alta someone from New Hampshire was killed in a slide even before the Mountain opened. Then the cook at the Peruvian bought lunch just driving down the canyon - that undercores that this footage came at the cost of a calculated risk. Bravo.

Why are some chutes like this one not considered couloirs? Corbets couloir for example is also flanked on both sides by rock walls but the length of those walls isn't any longer than this chute ..
The chute is called Shane's Chute after Jim Shane. Jim built and owned the Goldminer's Daughter lodge at Alta and was an Alta ski patroller in the 40's. He reportedly the first person to ski the chute in leather boots and wood skis. Please respect history and call it Shane's Chute.
Does the sun loosen up the snow and make it more likely to slide later in the day?
Yes it can. It makes the snow heavier and causes water to percolate through the snow pack and results in wet slides, typical of spring time. The conditions in the video look more like mid-winter, and usually after a storm it will remain very cold, even in direct sun. Day to day temperatures won't be warm enough for that type of situation to develop. If anything, superficial layers can melt and refreeze which means new snow on top may not adhere well and the result can be dry slab avalanches.
A lot of work for that quick ride down. Nothing too dangerous I could see on that chute beside avalanche.
Yeah, I feel like I could definitely ski that with no problems, but I'd be more afraid of the hike up. Tbh, I feel like anything I could hike up, (without experience as a climber, and without ropes, crampons, ice axe etc)) I could ski down without much stress

at 1:40 you can see houses in the salt lake valley. These folks likely parked at snowbird which is 40 min from the airport. Usually less but thats a safe bet with some traffic.
Utah does have some of the best snow on earth but that run sure wasn’t it.
Thinking the same thing--wind-pack slab. They skied it well, no doubt about that. Not sure why it's called Suicide Chute, since there's thing inherently dangerous should one fall.
Also pretty sure it's SE facing, so it's not going to hold conditions super well.

"nice hiking with you" Hiking my a$$. Being able to hike up that chute at that elevation and deep snow is just as impressive as being able to ski down it. You can't bottle that and sell it on Peloton.

With my lack of experience I would have chickened out looking at the cornice at the top of the chute. Wouldn't have wanted to ascend beneath it. If that cornice just sits there all winter, maybe it's no big deal.
I dont think you are wrong and I dont think they are wrong. These people simply decided to ski under a cornice in a chute. Many people ski sketchy snow and get away with it for their entire lives, it doesn't make them more experienced or wiser. With the film crew there, and heli I'm sure they could have made sure no one went under it and dropped the cornice off with a rope. I think that would have been much smarter.

Uh...aaaactually. This thing gets ridden pretty much every single day in the winter by multiple parties. Untracked at that time of the morning is RARE.

@@mattbrown292 There is so much talent in Utah it's crazy. So many people hiking into lines that makes body parts pucker. Get a late start and you might be the 5th set of tracks coming down any one of the many chutes that line the canyon roads going up Little and Big Cottonwood Canyon. Even in-bound skiing at places like Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, etc can be treacherous. Do not discount signs that warn of "Cliffs." You can very easily ski off of a 40-footer or more that crosses several hundred feet of mountain fall line like in Mineral Basin of the Bird. It's nuts. You'd think that when getting ready to huck a 15' headwall onto a 55 degree slope there wouldn't be a lineup of folks waiting to jump in.

Chris Kinerk they say it in the video. They’re called Verts. Usually snowboarders use them. I guess skiers do as well 🤷♂️ if you look at Cody Townsend’s insta you’ll see a few other options that are very similar, but also compatible with toe crampons for mixed conditions
But the fresh powder makes it worth it

Sorry but the greatest snow on earth is north of Utah in the Kootenay region of BC. We have areas that get 60 feet on average.
Revelstoke has already had more than 20 feet.

Nice chute, I could ski it. Come to A basin in Colorado and try the notches, no turns possible at the top!, either you tuck it or butt ski for a while, most snowboarders do!
Um Henry, while A-Basin offers great chutes like SFB among others, they don't compare to Mt Superior. Don't embarrass yourself, go ski Superior and then comment.

I don't know this Adam person you mentioned, is he a great skier too? But I have skied the impressive chutes at A-basin (lived in the County back in the 80s) as well as multiple lines on Mt Superior and there is no comparison.

Yup agreed. Mt Victoria in Lake Louise , Plinth peak / Mt Sampson near Bralorn . Mt Bryce in the Canadian Rockies are real intimidating. This looks like mini golf

As a father, not sure I want to watch my daughter ski down carzy runs, although Angle is a boss skier, but still, I’d be vexed watching her.
