  • With an impeding storm on the horizon, the push to ski two classic lines in Colorado in back-to-back days presents one of the most exhausting challenges of The Fifty to date. The two classics, the iconic and photographic North Maroon Peak near Aspen, Colorado and the far-flung and aesthetic Holy Cross Couloir near Vail, Colorado are in stellar and stable condition in April of 2019 and create for some of the best skiing conditions possible on big ski mountaineering style lines. Cody Townsend is joined in this special double episode by Aspen locals Pete Gaston, Anton Sponar and Greg Strokes for the two day adventure in the Colorado backcountry.
    This is Episode 15 / 16 and line 13 and 14 completed for The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

    Love it as always. Have you considered putting a timer or clock in the corner of the screen. Not as a race but just get a bit more of an idea on how long you take on the different stages throughout the day. Bless up x

    my bet is i speak for many folks: when the newest Epic hits the web, life stops (and, ironically, begins again with a reminder of what is truly of Value), we press the Full Screen button, and we watch the latest. great stuff.

    Having clicked 57 back in May, I love this series as my days of big lines are over but these videos bring back great memories of skiing 14ers and 13ers in the 80s and 90s...thanks Cody and Team! Now imagine skiing some of the these lines with Silveretta bindings, Rossi GS skis and Dachstein AT boots with an emphasis on survival turns versus the impressive skill you boys display!

    Some years ago I skied Maroon Peak (the taller of the Bells, maybe slightly less difficult and slightly less exposed than North Maroon, briefly visible at 7:20). It was early June, right after the road had opened, and oh, boy, were the tourists thronging Maroon Lake during my hike out perplexed - with the exception of one old-timer who was telling me about how back in the ‘60s and ‘70s he used to ski with Fritz Stammberger, the first person to ski North Maroon.

Like if you started with an intro with even a google earth view of the line, a drone shot if available. I think that would add a lot to these that otherwise just seem like random pieces of terrain

Interviewing the sponsored athletes. Indefatigable. Sage. All of the guts, very little glory - but some... I love this project but I'm not sure it's the same without Bjarne. Man I was really hoping to see footage of you guys going out of the valley that the couloir puts you into. My friend and I did it on July 4th and it was a nightmare walking through that portion to get back to the main trail. It was melted out a lot so we had to find our way through boulder fields the size of small house. Then we had to find our way in the dark through steep trees that had random cliffs. I was wondering if it is easier to get through that with a solid snowpack.

    • @CodyTownsend
      @CodyTownsend  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yeah, we decided to skip that part since we were pretty long on the episode as it was. But yeah, it's a grueling climb back out of there. But it's definitely a lot lot lot easier climbing back up through those cliff bands with ample snow. We were able to skin back up pretty much the whole way.

      @@timothymitchell7250 yeah, I watched that episode! it was good but he did skip over the poles and the tweaks he's doing to his boots and even the comment feed talks about the poles, doesn't seem like there's an answer. They seem really close to the Black Crows poles

    Coffee (and likewise coffee withdrawals) often make me feel like puking, never from just being tired tho. Maybe that's why you knocked it over...ever get the feeling you are trying to tell yourself something?

      I actually puke when drinking tea and sheesh, I sure hope my body wasn’t rejecting my favorite beverage on the world.

    Do you always 'roughen up' the hairs on your skins prior to climbing to increase uphill traction? or is there another reason? Also, what tool were you using to do so, looked almost like a credit card? Thanks!

      Not actually roughing them up, was applying skin wax to combat the dreaded 'glop' that happens often in spring time.
