I was very surprised to see Chain of Command on BoW, can't recommend the system enough if you've enjoyed Bolt Action and want something a bit more specialized. The game has it's own quirks, but overall it's become my favorite historical system; relatively accessible and more accurate than most.
I'm convinced: this is the rules set that I want for my 28mm. I've had enough 40K "let's all ignore our ranged weapons and get into a bath-house orgy and call it "assault" or "melee"
I too am looking for a change from 40k like mini games and am struggling to choose a system for my WW2 minis. Advanced Squad Leader is my favorite game period and I am struggling with finding a miniatures game that captures some of the same nuance and/or realism. If complexity is not an issue would you recommend Chain of Command over the alternatives, namely Disposable Heroes and Crossfire?
Its always good to hear Richard speak about his game systems. Too bad the guy doing the interview had no clue as to what he was talking about. I think whomever does these interviews, play the game a go for a few phases, so it would appear you know what you are talking about and could ask better questions based off of the small exposure.

The first four minutes of this video is a not so subtle jab against Bolt Action. That game has some of the worst rules for modelling LMGs I've seen in any historical ruleset.
Many companies out there make suitable period miniatures. You can use 28mm or 15mm as per the rule book. Companies such as Artizan, Black tree, and of course Warlord Games huge line. If you want to play in 15mm, (PSC) plastic soldier company has complete armies (company with armor) in a box will set you back around $50 US plus shipping.
Funny we get that question with Black Powder Rules ? Its like Gamers are used to exclusive figures with exclusive ruleset . I find those " handcuffs " interesting as even rules are optional ( by the way we buy from a dozen different companies eg Warlord , Perry , Front Rank , Wargames Foundry , Avanpost , Black Hussars , Brigade Games et al )
Rusty Gold I love Frostgrave for the simple fact that you can use any fantasy minis you have sitting around to create your warband. Or you can pick from the borderline ridiculous amount of “official” minis they now offer.
Miniatures games are never too complicated. They generally sacrifice some level of complexity in favor of speed-of-play. So I would say you can start here and be okay. Bolt Action is far too simplified to the point that it doesn't feel like World War 2 - it feels like comic book fighting. If you want to play a historical era of game, you want appropriately historical rules.

BA sort of deserves it though for being "Warhammer 1940K". Same thing with Flames of War. The games themselves aren't BAD but they're appealing to the wrong crowd, the min-maxing competitive tournament players who want everything to be equal points with listbuilding to build the best list you can for pickup games and don't really care about the historical accuracy. That's sort of the polar opposite to historical gamers who want to play a WW2 game, not Warhammer with a WW2 mod.
I know right, crowing about realism when you roll dice for movement like its Snakes and Ladders, or criticising activation dice while CoC rolls dice to activate units. Classic tabletop grogs for you.

They are right when saying any game that discourages using LMGs is WRONG! That is not a minor change. Chain of Command also respects the historical force structure. Activation dice spam is frankly stupid. No army was running around with tons of 5 man squads bounding around like a cheerleader squad.
No- and why you'd assume that off the back of a very generalised 18 min video, I've no idea. It's written by someone who knows his subject and brings that knowledge to the table in the form of a realistic, but playable set of rules. It's everything BA isn't.
No, bolt action is a tournament games system that happens to be set in world war 2. It also dose a very poor job representing history or the tactics used by the force involved. Real world TO&E's are used in COC, and real world tactics can be used effectively in the game.... Baring your dice rolling being crap. Rich has a few how to play videos on the toofatlardies TH-cam channel. Give them a watch if you have the time or are interested.

People that like to "tune their list" play tournaments, and pop up special units with special rules that only they can use. Chain of Command is much more old school in it's feel and approach to (over all) realistic and realistic feel. The companies approach to marketing is as well (i.e. no milking you for extra "army books")

A good and well thought through rule set. I use it for my Spanish civil war games. However Crossfire is still my favourite ww2 rule set.

I disagree... but only because I do not see LMGs modeled and worse than many, MANY things in that game and much better than some.
Shame the north africa campaign isn't included I'm sure it will be supplemented
