    Noob, you know we're going to need a complete and updated guide to your SC set up with your with all your favorite bindings and macros. I know you've done videos in the past with your previous set ups. It would be great to have an updated 2022 guide for various controller systems and gear levels ( I know that a sh*t ton of work). Please just consider it for your fans, we use your info when we make purchasing decisions and really appreciate your honesty and brevity.

      I agree, but I also realize that its a big job, so eventually would be cool. We would definately appreciate it, me esp considering I just got the whole shebang.
      You always hit on all the finer points, often answering the exact questions Ive been wondering about.
      It would also be awesome to see IF there is any usefulness/comfort, etc to the DUAL Z EXTENSION config? It would take away the whole HOTAS Warthog immersion sim feeling on the Right side anyway (which Im fine with for a more fluid and comfortable grip.)
      Ive got one Z Ext on order but I couldnt drop the extra $60 USD plus S/H to get a second, just to see.
      I guess that says alot about how much we need you! Imagine how much overspending (I wont say wasted as its quality gear) there'd be, if we all bought items, just to test, or to find out if we like it. Im just too broke for that.
      Thanks alot for ALL your content!!!
      BTW, I just put a face to the voice, the other day, saw an old 2019 live stream by another youtuber (ATC ep).

    I have 3D Printed the angled extension shown in your vid myself, and i have to say it is rock sollid ( nothing loose etc. ).
    Printed with 60% infill in PETG 0.12mm layer ; 0,4 nozzle
    ...put a rubber O-ring in between base and extension.

    I've been using a 50mm and a 75mm virpil extension pipe clamped together by a metal 90 degree bracket that was bent back to provide 60 degree angle instead. Using a Constellation Alpha L, the twist left/right axis becomes twist up/down physically with the new orientation. I've used this bound to vertical thrust.
    It gave me a surprising amount of ease of use compared to having left stick vertically mounted, so I was very excited to see this just casually dropped in a preview email without any mention last month.

    I've been following your stuff since the very beginning when you were first trying out Okona's custom built left hand warthog grip. This is the first time I've ever been disappointed in essentially anything you've put up - I don't really have an opinion on Virpil's extension but it makes me wonder how you could possibly have printed that piece so that it would disintegrate like that. I am using the 3D printed version myself and it is absolutely rock solid, there is no flex, no give, and especially no disintegration.
    I'm sure the Virpil provided part is great, but the 3D printed part is great also and you are doing a disservice to the DIY community with this.

    I actually saw a few videos about it, and whilst I unfortunately enough don't have a setup at all, it was one of the things that I found to be possibly essential to the setup. There was even one video where it essentially removes the need for a keyboard entirely for on-ground movements, given that you can use the thumbstick on the stick for movement. It's great to see Virpil actually putting resources towards this, and I hope that the product will see good use in the future!

  • @ElijahNMitchell

    I like how long that is. Main reason I upgraded from my t16000ms to the VKB was for that Omni

  • @txag98
    @txag98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Like many here, I also 3D printed the one that was shown in the vid and it was rock solid. I later made a different one that I still use and printed it with a resin printer. The DIY crowd's options are definitely viable if someone wants to go that route. I was excited to see VIRPILs take on this and it looks slick. I ordered one the day they made it available.
    So that said, the review is great and I'm glad to see Noobifier is catching on to how the angled grip really does change the whole feel of flying in a space sim but I am a bit disappointed in him for the portrayal of the 3D designs here as total garbage -- I get it, it's a "for effect" kind of thing and this is kind of a commercial so he needs to show them falling apart, but it's also somewhat dishonest. Most usability issues were addressed by the DIY community and to call them out as total garbage and portray them as something that just fall apart diminishes the time and work that crowd put into designing and making them as well as their advocacy over in VIRPIL's forums.
    I think I saw something about VKB working on their own version of this as well but I can't remember the link. It's a really cool story about how an idea evolved over the past year or so in the DIY world and has now made its way to a first-class supported product from one of the leaders in sim gear.

    • @NOOBIFIER1337
      @NOOBIFIER1337  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Compared to the VPC one, the printed one would be garbage, I stand by that. the VKB one has been teased for a couple of months now. Hopefully it releases soon. The DIY is a good starting place to evolve, then the product needs to be made properly.

Virpil still needs to design and make a Hawk-60 Cyclic Grip (to match Lockheed Sikorsky and Boeing Vertol cyclic-grip switchology), which I'd need to build the Roll-Pitch column of a notional Northrop F/A-54 pilot station (a theoretical extrapolation from what Grumman actually did in the G-391 (USDoD: F-14D) Enhanced Fleet Defender).

    Because originally, HOSAS has only 2 axes we can intuitively associate with up and down and 4 with left and right, like this it's finally 3/3 which is the motions we do.

    Another high quality piece from Virpil. I use the cosmo SIM springs in my warBRD bases and so the weight was a little off of centre on the x-axis. Easily fixed in Virpil software, just set the new resting position of the x-axis as "centre". Job done, no further tweaks needed.
    I'm not convinced that the z-axis is usable in the positive direction.. it's not natural to twist the wrist up/back in that direction. But it's working, (has too, as I've no pedals)..

    • @epicgamer42069
      @epicgamer42069 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At first the twist for vertical movement may seem weird, but after a while it is completely natural. When it comes to operating things like cranes and other heavy machinery, your controls hardly have any resembalance of the actuall movments and it may take a while at first to get used to it, but once you get used to it it's completely natural.
      I personally have the opposite concern with the twist axis in this settup. I am worried that the twist axis would be harder to use.

    This is also interesting for fixed-wing ga pilots because of weird control setups like the cirrus sr22 not really fitting into any traditional joysticks in my mind.

    I first saw something similar to this over a year ago that someone made themselves and thought it was very interesting. I've been using a Gladiator-K left stick for my HOSAS setup and the introduction of this got me to finally order a second Alpha for my left hand.
    I saw that you used a helicopter collective grip on yours. What do you see as the advantage to doing that? To me, losing the twist fucntionality negates the major reason I'd use it.

    although my method is a bit more obscure. I use aluminum extrusion mounts, and wanted to be able to tilt my joystick for certain circumstances.
    got myself a $15 aluminum pivot bracket, now both my joysticks (and my throttle if I want) can tilt, and untilt. takes about 10 seconds to change the angle.
    held in place just as solidly as they are without the pivot bracket.

I'm wondering if it will be intuitive for the right hand, since it feels like it will completely change the way wrist "axis" translates to joystick movement. I'm definitely getting one for the left hand, with the new gimbal clutch to emulate the way throttle works.

    VKB is making a Left Gladiator stick setup like this, but it's molded plastic to one angle built into their grip based on teaser photos =( I want one for my VKB Gunfighter gimbals because it's more like the Virpil so you can attach it or remove it as desired. Had same luck with iffy 3d printed parts and willing to lay the extra couple dollars for sturdy metal. The other perk of the sideways stick is easier control panel access in smaller sim pits.

    I love how he calls out 3d printing out, but I would argue that most of his gripes could be addressed with a better design for printing and some off the shelf hardware to clean up those mechanical connections. The plastic chosen will also make a large difference in the quality. PLA, PETG and ABS, while very good printing materials, arent as effective at long term, high fuctionality parts. Maybe ASA, cfn, would provide better untuned results. But an engineered process and careful hardware considerations could make for a great mod for high end settups. Spaceships and their interiors are being 3d printed now, so i dont think a generic price to quality comparisons are wise or fair to what the 3d printing process can and cant achive. Design, experimentation and consistantcy will make for quality, functional mods. Not a quick, rapid print that can be designed and installed on a weekend.

    Noob, thanks for the video. I'm a little curious but I do like my virpil throttles. That said I have one burning question - during your Alpha grip review you never talked about how Star citizen does not allow use of the thumbstick if the main stick is deflected at all. Basically it seems like it locks out input to the thumbstick if you pitch/yaw/etc. What do you use the thumbstick for? I bought the alpha grip after your review but was very disappointed to find this out for myself. I had hoped to use it for free look but for SC its virtually worthless tasks while piloting.

      @@NOOBIFIER1337 I use my left stick x axis bound to strafe left-right, and y axis bound to strafe up-down. I think having the stick at 45 degree angel would just make it worse for me. I can see the point if you use y-axis as fwd/reverse thrust, but I have pedals for that.

    • @AP-if4pm
      @AP-if4pm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnnaVahtera The point of the angled adapter is mainly to separate the direction of input for the x and z axis. When a stick is upright, both the x-axis and z-axis input direction is a left/right motion (tilt left/right and twist left/right). When a stick is angled enough (more than 45 degrees) then the z-axis twist input direction becomes an up/down motion, rather than a left/right motion. This makes for a very intuitive 3-axis control scheme because you can match the direction of input to the direction of output for all 6 degrees of motion. BUT, if you already have your muscle memory built around y-axis fwd/rev input for ship strafe up/down, and you aren't using the twist z-axis, then this angled setup will likely mess with you! :-D
      I'm one of the community members who designed and printed my own angled adapter a while ago (for VKB Gunfighters though, not Virpil). Glad to see that Virpil is adding the option, though it's definitely not for everyone. Two axis on a left stick + pedals is a great option!

      @@AP-if4pm Oh, it makes more sense now. And even more sense why I would not benefit from it, since I don't use the Z-axis at all. I have my left stick bound to only X: strafe left/right, Y: strafe up/down, and a couple of buttons. Twist is not used at all. I have forward/backward thrust on my pedals.
