  • This is part two of the Spectrum/JR DSM 2.4GHz RC system review.
Please read the article at: www.rcmodelrevi... for some important information uncovered during the testing process.
Reboot times are very good, even if the reboot voltage is a little high and although it's not perfect, the Spektrum system has provided many model fliers with a reliable RC system for several years now, and that has to count for something.
However, the system is starting to show its age so the question will be: How does Spektrum/JR improve the system without compromising backwards compatibility?
It's not the "best" system from a purely technical perspective but at least it's mature and has great support.
If you're a Spektrum user, what do you think of your system?

Really liking your videos. They do a great job of helping people understand the tech behind this radio systems. Im a very visual learner and seeing the spectrum analyser output is a great way of explaining things. Its making my a bit wary of my Spekrum kit but at least I now understand its limitations. The way I see it DSM2 will always be more resilient than my old FM kit and I never used to worry about that. Perhaps ignorance is bliss.

Consistency, customer support and marketing have obviously kept Spektrum a field filling technology, but I believe once Frsky gets the bugs worked out of it's form factor it could be the new standard. Great review, as always. I've been looking forward to some name brands in the mix.

You Rock! I had no idea how this system works until now. Thanks!!!

Great review! The only thing that was left out is the limited number of JR transmitters that can be switched on at one time. I believe that number is 39. While at most flying fields you won't ever see this, many of the larger fun flies approach this number when you consider transmitters being switched on in the pits. My brother lost a $5K CompARF at Joe Nall this year due to this very thing. I fly a 12X and had a lockout last year at Nall but fortunately got it back before zero AGL

    Awesome work Xjet!
JR is hands down my favorite primarily for ease and flexibility of programming. I haven't made the 2.4 jump yet as I really want to see their system improve.
Can you tell me if they ever hop frequencies when interference is encountered? From your test it looks as if they don't.

what is the max range of the signal on this system? is it only for park flyer models or you can use it on a larger scale model like .60 or so. Thanx, like your instructive variety of video reviews. Please keep on going with more.

Hey Bruce, good work once again. I see that horizon have released a racequad receiver. I am new to fpv and have an older dx6i dsm2 and was needing to know if this tx will be ok to controll a quad. Or should I upgrade??
    Thanks mate.

Hi Bruce is it possible to convert a jr x388s transmitter the Earley model 36mhz if I could find a reciever for it and crystal 36.470 . I wouldn't be asking this question . Can it be done by changing the module over ?

Just a question without looking up info on the forums ..... of the "some" users who have had issues, how many were using four cell nimh AA packs? (do you have any idea, as I'm quite interested).
Currently I'm thankful I'm running a high capacity 5 cell pack!
Thanks for this vid, quite informative.

@xjet I guess like any system and or chain ..... things are only ever as good as your weakest link!!
Put a weak link in that just happens to be the power behind the entire system, and your asking for trouble I guess.
I'm just waiting till someone comes up with GOOD and relatively cost effective 7.4v capable servos for my heli and plane, then it'll be 2s Lipo with no regulator (and my DSM2 system) - nothing like overkill I guess!! ;)

Locked out tonight again. DX6i. for no reason, 3min. into a fresh 2200ma battery my plane just free falls out of the sky. Throttle off then on it re-connects but only gives me seconds to recover.........ummm, not this time, I have the glue on the job now. My brand new Icon A5 just got a nose job.
Unreliable output = destroyed planes. It's a demon seed.
What receiver ? What transmitter ? can we rely on ?? I'll have to quit.
