Why do the mega carriers push for lease purchase? Answer, because it subjugates the driver into a longer term contract with them versus a company driver. 3-5 years for lease, mabye a year max for company. They will especially push it if they sponsored your CDL training. Also, they will use 'you can make 6 figures' punchline. Do the math that's gross and not net and trust & believe me, net and gross are two different numbers! Lease is definitely not for everyone and what I am about to say is a little controversial, but in my 15 years of trucking I had to learn this awful truth about the business side of trucking: You're either an owner operator, or you're not.
a lot of people go into lease for more money & somewhat more home time, in reality you’re paying off the companies truck and they take more from you telling you how much a load pays instead of seeing it
As a lease driver I have more freedom. I stay south in winter. If a shipper is rude I will never go back. I never sit in a pilot, love's or Petro behind 20 truck's fueling. As for taxes I paid $2k last year. You can write off almost everything. Those factors alone reduce the stress level then I would have as a company driver
Great work guys. Straight Facts. I got up to nearly 300 lbs within a couple years of driving. I became a diabetic, my blood pressure was through the roof. Leasing (in most cases) is not for everyone. I made nearly 80k as a company driver in 2019. Not bad money. Been off the road for a while. But when I came off the road, my health improved. Take care of yourself drivers. Subbed 👍

After 6 months, they'll say that they have had numerous complaints from 4-wheelers saying you did so & so. And because SWIFT doesn't have side Cameras, you can't say it didn't happen. No accidents but because they believe the 4-wheelers they fire you. But you still owe that tuition. Swift makes money on their schools, promising good pay after 2 years, then someone says shít and you lose your job. Swift doesn't defend their drivers, it's all a scam.
I’m doing a lease right now averaging 22-3500 week home for reset on weekends also able to take off when ever I’m ready. I’m actually home now. I’m using the platform as a stepping stool learning as much as I can saving as much as I can learning taxes setting up llc and so much more. I think its all dependent on the drive and wants of the person. Love ya channel
My trainer, who leases with Prime, showed me some of his recent solo driver settlements. The truck consistently generates $6,500-$8,500 per week. After all fixed expenses, (such as truck payment) all variable expenses, (such as fuel) emergency fund, etc, are all taken out, and after setting aside 25% for income tax, his business takes $2,500-$4,000 per week. Company drivers do the exact same work and are lucky to see half of those take-home amounts. Clearly, lease drivers have more money-making potential. Even with a truck payment. So, man up, be responsible, and get paid!
As an O/O at Prime with a paid off truck my overhead is $150 + fuel a week and that is the name of the game. Get rid of your overhead and you can go home all you want on top of making more than a company driver ever would. If you lease at Prime your truck has a 4 yr 500k mi warranty so you only pay for tires and basic maintenance such as PM’s and you should have a fund that you put money into weekly that will cover your truck payment while taking home time and taxes. Save every single receipt for anything in the truck and it is a write off. Being an independent contractor is not for everyone but to say it is a scam and you won’t make money is absolutely not true. Prime also has a 3rd party company that offers health insurance to independent contractors. When you are a student you need to not only learn how to drive but learn the business as a whole and the more you know the more successful you will be.
I appreciate your comment, because I’ve talked to several O/O that got their truck through lease purchase and they are also doing well. I take caution from anyone giving out advice that has not stood the test of time through any process!
The BIGGEST trap is, they'll lease to anyone. Even the financially irresponsible. 2019 leased new, paid off in 35 months, with less than 280k miles. And I took vacations. If you can't be financially responsible in running your personal life. You should have zero expectations of running a business.
@@wm.p.2348 I lease with Hornady Transportation out of Birmingham, AL. My company pays 67% of the load. Always lease in percentages, never cents per mile.
This is a great video. So much good info. You can definitely make great money as a company driver. I’ve only been at this for 4 months on a dedicated route through a company people tend to talk down about. I am very well respected and bring home about $1200 every week after my taxes and (pretty fantastic) insurance and benefits get pulled, AND I’m home every weekend! No worries about paying for fuel, breakdowns, regular maintenance, etc. I am beyond happy with where I’m at. The positions are out there. You just have to look and ask a lot of questions. Thanks for the great video, I’m so glad I subscribed to Asian Mai, and getting ready to subscribe to Trucker Brown. Thanks again, this is info people definitely need to hear.

Guess I'm a sucker..lmao..grossed 297k last year..and I missed January and Oct due to fixing the truck..truckers mostly are salty and have there own miserable point of view..and I'm home every other weekend..and his view about not going on vacation is because he doesn't plan head and pay up on the truck..not hating on trucker brown but I've been leasing for 8 straight years and my gross is always 250k or more..and if you get bent out of shape for 2 weeks loss of truck payment due to taking your family on a vacation he just needs to get behind a desk.. Great content! The best is to start at a food service company like Sysco, US Foods, etc... save your money then buy your own equipment and go from there.. Leasing is no good. Not even leasing cars. If you never own it, it's not worth it! Just my opinion.
That's not true. A lease is a 100% tax write-off every year. If you are buying a truck, you must depreciate a certain amount of the value of that truck over a longer period (so it gives you less of a tax break by taking you longer to get the write-off). The key is that you need to lease from a reputable TRUCK DEALER like Penske and not the Trucking Companies themselves. Additionally, IF you are leasing your truck, you SHOULD be doing your own loads and NOT being forced to take loads from only one company. That way you can move on if the loads do not pay what you need.
I have heard too many horror stories about leasing like when some Mutha Trucka works their ass off to have it almost paid off then the company takes possession of the almost paid off truck on a small technicality
The message really boils down to: don't be lead around by people in suits. They fund those suits by leading you around. Find your own path. Seek wisdom from people who are actually trying to help you, not just the company bottom line.

Trucker Brown is the main person I watched who inspired me to try trucking. For that, I am forever grateful. Over my 3 years of trucking so far, I have clear goals in life, and I have made a lot of progress. I am able to fix my truck and engine using software when needed. My previous mechanic experience helped me pick good equipment. I do my own books. I use tax software to file taxes. Landstar helps me do stuff I can't do, can't handle by myself, and don't want to do. I do not overwhelm myself. I have no debt. I can take lengthy vacations. I have ok health insurance through my own company. I utilize as many tax advantages as I can with my S-Corp as possible. Thank you Trucker Brown for all you have contributed.
Bro. You cant be scared to take chances and be SELF RELIANT!!! LEASE, COMPANY , OR OTHER. WORK HARD AND EDUCATE YOURSELF. THE REST WILL COME. Different strokes for different folks. Nobody knows it all. Let's not act like we do. Be real.
I'm a company driver and I have no delusions about being an owner operator. I have great. Health care I'm home every weekend. And my pay is much better than it was working factory jobs. I have a family to provide for the last thing I need is to have to worry about repairs and getting stranded because my truck is down.
And that’s okay! Many can’t handle more then 1 responsibility. This is why I will always respect business owners. They got families of their own to worry about PLUS worry about employees who have families of their own. Those who can do both will forever receive my respect 💯
Oh hell no.......when I'm done with my training .....I plan to go company and drive for a small fleet within the company........then when I'm comfortable with everything then I might go lease and build my fleet......
I like to say thank you to Alex for these videos and you are a special guess truck or brown thank you for the good advice I am 53 years old I am from a little village called Markstay Ontario Canada I’m finally chasing my dreams of becoming a truck driver I start on campus march 14, 2022
I am soo glad you are telling the ppl the truth. The thing that bothers me about leasing is you have to get your loads from that company. That is too much control
Was an owner/op for 10 years and the company I was contracted to was robbing me on the price of the loads. How do I sue them for cheating me out of countless thousands of dollars? They would take $ off the top, then charge Me 28% off the fabricated load price, plus would never let me see the original price of the loads until I got my settlements at the end of the week.
Get a consultation with a business lawyer and pull up all the forms and agreements you signed. If there's nothing in the fine print that says they have full control over the money they pay you for each load you may have a case. Tack the lawyer fees onto the back end of the settlement or if they fight it and lose they pay the lawyer and court fees separately from the settlement.
Another thing to add would be : while some may lease to own with the idea of once the truck is paid for they’ll just go out on their own. Stay on the companies payroll to get that experience but by the time you’re ready to make the move that truck will be wore out. All of a sudden this truck needs a $25k in frame and while making that $1000 a week payment you don’t have $1 in savings to cover any of it.
Anyone can drive, but not everyone can have business. I’m leasing, I’m paying my taxes, and I’m almost ready to buy my own truck, there is many options of leasing. I Started my leasing in the first company, moved to another and still making good Before I start on the business, I studied the business for one year. Them started and I’m growing
Werner driver here one month of experience... I'm glad it doesn't offer any type of leasing program like that. Either you're a company driver, or you buy the truck via financing. I say it's wiser to be patient and learn the game before jumping on the deep end
Oh yeah . Regular lease purchase sucks !! I was always out . Couldn't afford to stay home . Now I switched to opi pick my own loads , bid etc. Much better . Now the lease program is excellent for the carrier. They have employees without having to categorize them as employees . These contractors pay for the truck ... everything! The company gets out of paying half your social security taxes . The company gets paid first ! You get what's left ! If anything. And if the company wants ...they can fire you when you get close to paying off your truck . They have all the power, yet they say you are your own boss ?
I call bs I'm sorry. I've did everything he name as far as leasing. I've never worked more than 2 weeks then I took a week off. Tomorrow is my last payment on my Lease Truck from SFI. 3 year lease.

There's no way I would lease a truck from a company, they get too much of your money and you really don't get to make any of the decisions. If a driver has the credit and cash for the beginning expenses then I would say buy a truck outright. Lease to a good company and pay for your own plates and permits, insurance and fuel, that way you can leave whenever you need to.

I took my time. Saved up money to buy a good truck and have a very healthy emergency fund savings account in case something happened. Im good with 1 truck for now at least while i learn this side of the wheel
I’m trying to lease a truck right now. They told me because I want a specific brand I gotta wait without getting payed and I was placed at the back of the list. What if that’s the truck I feel safe in? Why do I have to drive a truck that is old and the original lease is abt to be done? Then I sign a three year deal only to bring it back at the end of the year and sign another three year lease. At this point trucking is overrated. It involves too much slick ways of forcing you to make decisions
@@lq1129 yep you’re correct. I tried leasing a truck over the past week and a lot of leasing agents are saying it’s going to 12-13 months before people can get a truck
Wow great interview and info! Ultimately know your limits. If you want to go for it weigh your options and move accordingly. What risks are you comfortable taking?
Some people can't manage money. If your finances are a mess already dont consider running a business. If you can afford a $1000. A week truck payment you should be able to maintain a good used truck. I decide what my income is going to be. This isn't that hard to figure out.

We are definitely coming in blind and all we see is opportunity and dollar signs. I think I’d be very satisfied with being a company driver. Just like all other avenues of becoming an entrepreneur, it’s very risky and all responsibility falls on your shoulders. Owner operator sounds amazing of course but there’s a blueprint to follow. There should at least be some type of course or class that educates you on the ins and outs of the business side of leasing your own truck. We gotta remember that all that glitters ain’t gold! 💯 Thanks again fellas 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I went down that lease road. I ended up getting screwed out of my truck by JR Schugel after my daughter came out of nccu. They told me I could self terminate or be blackballed. I’m running company truck now and suffered a stroke back in November after running 13 weeks straight

Subbed 👍

U should've went to your local college.. coming out of school on a contract you're going to be working for peanuts and can't say no for a few months

I went through a lease purchase program. Truck was 28,000. Paid 23000 for it. Took me 9 and half months to pay off. Didn't go through a big company
What trucking company is this if you don’t mind me asking
@@sparechange570 Sims Logistics in Illinois
A $28,000 truck ?
Yes bro. To lease is to have a dedicated end goal.
Do they pay %
@@wm.p.2348 Prime pays 72% of load
That sounds like about 5k$ to the truck
The BIGGEST trap is, they'll lease to anyone. Even the financially irresponsible.
2019 leased new, paid off in 35 months, with less than 280k miles. And I took vacations.
If you can't be financially responsible in running your personal life. You should have zero expectations of running a business.
Which company
Is not the biggest trap if you find a walk away lease program. Meaning that you can walk out whenever you want.

Foodservice will make new drivers hate this industry.
Food service sucks balls! I started at sygma absolutely hated it! Went to flatbed never looked back!

I am soo glad you are telling the ppl the truth. The thing that bothers me about leasing is you have to get your loads from that company. That is too much control
This guy is mad because it did not work out for him..
I was waiting on this comment 🤣🤣🤣
Was an owner/op for 10 years and the company I was contracted to was robbing me on the price of the loads. How do I sue them for cheating me out of countless thousands of dollars? They would take $ off the top, then charge Me 28% off the fabricated load price, plus would never let me see the original price of the loads until I got my settlements at the end of the week.
tell them to fuck off go find a company that wont fuck you over man. self worth is key
Put a lien on their business.
Just get ur own authority man have 100% control of the loads and money no one takes a cut from you
Too late now u should always ask for rate com..from broker or company paying and fuel surcharge...

I'm lease purchase.. I'll never go back to company driver..I make 4x 5x what I was.. I'll be buying my own truck shortly
Super dope perspective 👍🏾 I know alot of people that need to see this/hear this
Another thing to add would be : while some may lease to own with the idea of once the truck is paid for they’ll just go out on their own. Stay on the companies payroll to get that experience but by the time you’re ready to make the move that truck will be wore out. All of a sudden this truck needs a $25k in frame and while making that $1000 a week payment you don’t have $1 in savings to cover any of it.

There's no way I would lease a truck from a company, they get too much of your money and you really don't get to make any of the decisions. If a driver has the credit and cash for the beginning expenses then I would say buy a truck outright. Lease to a good company and pay for your own plates and permits, insurance and fuel, that way you can leave whenever you need to.
