      He abused alcohol and heroin in the mid 80s but I don't think it lasted into the 90s.

      Kevin Pippin How right you are. I didn't hear that delicious Amsterdam story until a few years ago. I heard it straight from Keith's lips during an interview and, oh how he enjoyed the hell out of relating it. King Jagger saved from landing unconscious in a canal thanks only due to Keith's cherishing of his own jacket that Mick had had the arrogance to put on without asking first.
      The interview can be found on TH-cam and it's a real pip. Charlie's telling of the same incident is naturally more low key, and yet between the two versions we can't help but get a fine insight into the three men as they really are and were during that period. Lesson learned, especially by Mick as Keith already respected and loved our hero: Do not fuck with Charlie Watts.
      I think I'll take another look at the interviews now, Keith's first for the sheer joy of his laughter and why that jacket saved Mick's life that stoned out night. Peace

    • @petermills542
      @petermills542 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried to relate that incident on a dfferent thread recently. You've put it much better ! I think they were collectively having ' mid life crises' at that time !
      ps I gather that a really good punch is all about the timing and intent, not just a matter of brute strength haha !!

    • @petermills542
      @petermills542 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh. I've just remembered another related thing. When they were making Some Girls album Jagger got carried away & kicked Charlie's kit . Charlie gave him apiece of his mind & added ' & while we're at it stop laying into Ronnie all time ... ! it was something like that, I may have read it in one of Bill's books ?

    The fact that most never notice his playing is because he plays the songs and never gets in the way, making him the best kind of drummer. Ringo is the same. At the end he laughs and says "I'm sorry" .. almost too self-effacing for a chat show but in a big brash band

    Charlie was Mr. Cool. Sat next to him in LA watching Mike Stern with the great Dennis Chambers on drums. Charlie was low key, polite, impeccably dressed. Was actually intimidated to approach Dennis but with some prodding did so. Very gracious, humble guy. The fine fellows playing here, other than Charlie, were a bit in a rush, weren't they?
