His first one is nice and smooth/even throughout. MGS2 he starts to put some inflection in, but it gives him a little character, and he sounds more experienced and assertive instead of a spy feeling things out and sneaking around. MGS3 his inflection starts getting out of control and he starts adding growling to the end of his sentences. Portable Ops his voice is off the rails. MGS4 pretty awesome in my opinion. Do an old voice sounds hard. If he could get a balance between MGS1 and MGS2 I think that would be a great balance.
@@mr_wildschwein graphics were good for PS1 but no eyes was always a weird choice especially in cutscene-heavy game. See Tomb Raider, Soul Blade and Resident Evil for more human faces, despite same limitations.
I think this is sort of true. MGS1-3 and PO very much followed that trend, but 4 and PW had Hayter intentionally doing an older, more gravely voice. 4 had it stronger than PW, which makes sense because Old Snake was "older" than Big Boss.
According to David Hayter, he stated that he had to smoke and drink a bit to get into the Snake voice. Hayter was told to do it by Hideo Kojima and he wanted Hayter to keep talking in a raspy voice. Because of this, it done some damage to Hayter’s vocal cords. I personally like having Kiefer Sutherland as the voice of Big Boss and Venom Snake. But, I still miss David Hayter’s voice. His VO in Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 were done pretty well.
If it makes you feel better, you can sorta rationalize within the story because snake is not a perfect clone therefore, they would sound different later on I guess?
@@torlikoff Snake, whether Solid or Naked, both smoke a lot. Hayter has that saw voice, like someone who has too many cigarettes stuck in his throat. To me he is the voice of Snake, whether Solid or Big Boss.
Mgs2 and 3 were the best. 1 was kinda underdone, in po he sounded like he was getting older and snake was raspy in four since he was old (which kinda bothered me tbh) but pw was less overacted than 4. It's sad he's not in V since it's the first game I got.
I think MGS2 was the best balance overall... rough but still not too far gone. He started getting a little gargly in 3, and although I forgave 4 since he's old and dying, I was disappointed that it just got even more exaggerated in subsequent games.
Well in 2, it's not Big Boss, it's Solid Snake. 3 and Peacewalker are Big Boss, and you already said why Solid Snake would have the scratchy throat. It probably doesn't have anything to do with the story, maybe it's just Hayter's progression, but I like to think it's just because they're "different" people.
I agree completely, though to be honest the progressively gravelly voice never bothered me enough to be taken out of the games. And in retrospect, the games where Hayter's voice is more gravelly are in games where the Snakes are much older than before.
+eji313 Davids voice got stuck unfortunetaly, he might have injured his vocal cords doing old snake for such extensive amounts of time (you know he had to rephrase or redo the voice acts as with any game ever or movie) so i dont blame him really. He is physically unable to go back to young snake voice.
I find it funny but also sad at how fans have started to criticize Hayter's performances as Snake after he was replaced by Sutherland. I mean...this is the guy who has voiced the character for 15 years ever since he made his debut in Playstation. Everyone loved the guy and his voice work but now that he gets replaced by a Hollywood star fans have suddenly started to talk about how "cheesy" and "stupid" he sounds in the past games. OK, sure he does sound a bit cheesy but that's what MGS games are: cheesy and over the top. Hell, from what I've seen, even though MGS V is gonna be more serious than the past games it's still gonna be over the top and at least little bit cheesy ("They played us like damn fiddle!"). Now, I don't have anything against Sutherland. I actually think that he will do fantastic job voicing older and broken Big Boss. I just think that Hayter should also get a little more respect considering that he's been the one who brought Snake to live to western audiences for all these years and is a fan of the series like rest of us.
Yeah i agree, David Hayter is the original, what upsets me is that they diss on his work after being replaced is so unfair, it's like they are saying Henry Cavill is better Superman than Christopher Reeve or Daniel Craig better Sean Connery as James Bond, Sutherland is a good actor but the problem is he doesn't sound like Big Boss, Kiefer just used his own voice, funny they the fans got David Bateson back as Agent 47 in Hitman games after being replaced, ironic that Hollywood actor Michael Ironside got replaced by another voice actor but with experience , i mean look at Anthony Ruivivar the voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne in Beware The Batman, he sounded similar to Kevin Conroy but at the same time, Anthony used his own
I agree Joonas 4561 and i'm 100% with you here. What MGS fans (well i'm one as well but hey) bring as excuse doesn't really stand ever, Solid and BB are not the same person so they should have different voice? well ok, but it doesn't explain why Huey and Otacon (Hal) have the same voice then right? so if i follow correctly, father and son having the same voice is okay but original and clone having the same voice as well is not? it doesn't make sense. That's why i tend to dislike gaming industry nowaday, if it's not popular and well known to the majority (stars and all that cinema/hollywood thingy) then it's bad... i'm not a David Hayter fanboy (and i liked Emmanuel Bonami acting more than David Hayter for Solid in MGS1) and i don't know anything else about him but i think he was perfect in the role of Solid and BB (except the PW acting who was a little too much for me), i have nothing against Kiefer Sutherland but his acting in GZ was almost unnoticeable, anyway i just hope it will be better in TPP, i don't know much about Kiefer Sutherland ever (i'm not into that "cinema/hollywood thingy") so i'm a little worried about his performance but i'll see that in TPP then. One more thing, David Hayter exagerated with is voice acting? well yes, just like many other games out there, hell even the acting of that guy "Skull face" was a bit exagerated in GZ as well... and better not talking about Miller performance here.
Hayter can still do his original Snake voice form MGS1/2, Kojima told him to make it different for the later games this is a fact. Hell if you go to conventions with Hayter he does the voice for fans. He still has the magic touch. Only reason they hired Kiefer is because Kojima said he wanted Hollywood talent and he could do mocap for the face. Hayter said he's not a actor so I can understand why they chose a new person for that reason. David Hayter will always be Soild & Naked snake for me
David Hayter IS Snake. I loved especially his performance in MGS4. He managed to "age" his voice, to play an "aged" Snake. Really Amazing. He could have done the same for a middle aged Big Boss :D Even if Sutherland seems to be doing a good job...
He still is Solid Snake. Big Boss was recast, not Solid Snake. And honestly, Big Boss should have been. All of the other Snakes sounded completely different, and Solid was actually the most imperfect clone, so why in the living hell would he have the same voice as Big Boss and not, say, Solidus? It never made sense. It's better that they all have different voices, honestly.
You could tell in MGS1 that David was still working on the voice. MGS2 was an improvement, and MGS3 was the pinnacle. I have no idea what the hell happened in Peace Walker. It's like the strain from doing Old Snake permanently impacted his vocal chords or something.
I thought MGS3 sounded really bad. When I used to work on the phone I listened to it and thought it was terrible. I can't tell the difference now. I'm watching Portable Ops online and I can't stand his voice, which is what led me to look up this video.
Snake ages, Old Snake sounds like he does because he's older. They use Sutherland because Big Boss didn't sound like Snake in the end of 4, this is the midpoint. BB in Peace Walker was getting older.
If I remember correctly, Hayter said that while recording for PW, he was told to try to recreate "Old Snake but different" (obviously not exact words). I don't feel like it was really his fault.
PRDX4 oh, that makes sense. When I heard his voice, when working on the phone, I could easily tell minute differences in people's voices, and his voice sounded totally different from the demo in MGS3 and the full game. Also MG2. I just thought it was sloppy.
His voice was only bad in peacewalker, most likely due to poor voice direction. Although I always believed Big Boss needed a separate voice from Solid Snake, Keifer was a good choice but it is wasted in MGSV as Big Boss rarely talks in game but when he does it's great.
I'm not sure it was bad direction; I think the voice was just over looked. Cause its been the same voice director since MGS1. I bet if Kris Zimmerman watched a video like this she'd think twice about his delivery.
I do agree but I feel David could have pulled it off if he was given more clarity as to who Big Boss was and who he would become. I feel a more grounded version of his Captain America would have been perfect for MGS3 and as Big Boss got older he could shave the innocence off more each time without having to resort to gravel of rasp.
It's kinda silly the amount of hate Hayter gets sometimes ever since he was replaced. I mean, I'll say I'm okay with Sutherland, but this is like if Batman's VA, Kevin Conroy was replaced permanently with Peter Weller, and everyone crapped on the Conroy portrayal despite both being good vocal interpretations of the character.
hayter does such a good job voice acting a old snake really sounds like a cross between a old guy trying to hold on to his youth mixed with a tormented old war legend
All these comments on Snake's voice being "cheezy". That's the point! People take this game too seriously. The character of Snake was based of Snake Plissken from Escape from New York. Its why Solid has almost the same kind of story as the movie, he has the nickname Iroquois Plissken in MGS2, and it's why Big Boss has an Eyepatch. If you haven't seen the movie, then you have no idea what the basis of the character is on. David captured the essence of Kurt Russell in his performance as the character. That is why the character is iconic. If you don't like cheesy, then you don't like Snake. That's who the character is supposed to be "an 80s hero architype". Similar to Rambo (hence the Bandana). But still that essence of Snake Plissken. I don't think that Kiefer Sutherland can pull of the same type of character that Snake really is. It's why his acting is different and just off for Big Boss. Kiefer is a good actor but I don't really see him as Snake. HIS voice seems forced almost too bored to be like Snake's not the other way around with David Hayter (who again is basing the character of an existing architype). This is my opinion and I know it differs from others on here but no one here is "right" or "wrong". It is what it is.
MrPhoenixGalaxy Just Plissken is self helper and shame that everybody died at end E from LA. Escape from New Jersey is pure joke, i don't want to in future be based on movie 3D cinematics and small roles in movie, it doesn't fit at all.
I actually kind of liked 4 in that he sounded like a man whose insides were rotting. But I agree that Peace Walker was a little too Old Snake. And it's hard for me to be unbiased about 1 and 3 because they had so many big lines.
I love his voice for all of them. Always bothered me, even when it was the demo, that people complained about David's voice being too cartoony for Peace Walker. Considering who the supporting cast was in that game, plus everything else added (lifting a hydraulic metal door/Peace Walker's foot/cocoon's body, the human slingshot, Monster Hunter, Chasing Amy with Huey, and a villain named Hot Coldman) his voice was just enough to be a part of the comic book we were playing. Chico, Paz, and Cecile's voices were dodgy as fuck, but they were fun.
Peace Walker. That was the end of the line for Hayter. His time as Big Boss was over. The graveliness was way too overdone and simply was distracting more than anything else. That's why I'm on board for the Sutherland switch. Although I do wish they had waited until Big Boss had awoken from his coma before Sutherland's voice came on. Would have made tremendously more sense given the 9-year difference.
+Matthew Kohler But yeah, Hayter should have been the voice for Ground Zeroes as it only takes place a few months after Peacewalker but after the coma they could have had Sutherland.
Hayter's MGS 4's delivery for Old Snake was amazing. Easily his best work as a voice actor in the entire series. Peace Walker I absolutely hated. Bad voice directing for him sadly.
+JazABaz Well according to Kris Zimmerman it was requested that he voiced a somewhat middle aged Big Boss so it would canonically make sense she fully believed he could do MGS1 or MGS3 Snake again if he was asked to. She also really missed him in MGS:V (she actually didn't really realized how little Snake talked until some of her friends told her how quiet Snake was) [this was from a YongYea interview with her and Paul Eiding], she also missed Patrick Zimmerman for Ocelot as well (which just makes me admire her more since she put the character first rather than her personal life [she had a divorce from him]). Plus I'll say it Troy Baker's Ocelot was disappointing I appreciated what he tried to do, however it didn't work Ocelot was sooo tamed (he actually ended being nothing more than a voice of reason) compared to the like's of Kaz, "Ohh here's a method of torture pour salt water on Quiet (that is something a true sadist would think of)".
+Waifu Rider I actually think MGS4 was pretty bad, i get SS is old and all that but... it just doesn't sound good. Portable Ops and Peace Walker (Especially PW) it was just terrible. MGS1 and MGS2 were easily the best VO he did for Snake, MGS3 is decent but not as good. I'm really glad that they put Keifer as Venom Snake, even if he doesn't talk too much as other games, when he does, it just sound soo much natural and less cartoonish.
Every little time Big Boss actually gets to speaks on MGSV, I mentally put Hayters voice over. Every time. The real difference in voice was on Portable Ops, MGS4 and Peace Walker. That is where the grumbling started to get more pronounce at the end of each sentence when Snake speaks, but it doesn't have to do with lack of acting. For MGS4 was because Snake was old and sick, which Hayter played perfectly. On Ops and Peace Walker, he was directed to use an older voice for Big Boss and he did as told. People just think Hayter voice degraded, but he has proven on interviews that he can do both voices.
+Hyan36 Yeah, Hayter did the old MGS1 voice at a fan request in an interview and he did it flawlessly with no hesitation. He can still naturally do it, he was directed not to.
***** I think Hayter sounds too young for Big Boss. Kiefer sounds like a real experienced veteran soldier who's been through some shit, way more fitting for Big Boss.
"Hayter can't voice Big Boss in MGSV cause it's so DARK!"... So the game with a giant bipedal mech, an acrobatic wolf, and sniper who fights in a swimsuit fit into this supposedly "dark" story? We really won't know the real reason Hayter was booted. Sutherland did a more than serviceable job, but Hayter's voice inflections, grit, and passion really made his performances excel.
I love his MGS 4 voice because it actually sounds like an older version of himself that’s smoked too many cigarettes and is also slowly dying at the same time.
Thanks for putting all of these clips together. It was interesting to hear the development of the voice over the years, especially the subtle differences between each game.
Hayter did the best voice in the first Metal Gear solid and they also gave Snake the coolest lines and he was the most snarky like the you must be a real threat in the muck tuck eating contests that line still cracks me up.
I wish they just used Kiefer for MGS3 from the beginning and when 5 rolled around used him for the body double and Hayter for Ahab, you fucking know it would've worked.
+TheAwesomeDarkNinja *SERIOUS SPOILERS, LIKE, FOR REAL DON'T CLICK "READ MORE" UNLESS YOU WANT ALL OF MGSV RUINED FOR YOU* Funny thing, Kiefer Sutherland isn't and never will be Big Boss; he's Venom Snake. The MGS wiki page for "Venom Snake" explains this a lot better than I ever could, but Venom Snake is completely unrelated to Les Enfants Terribles or Big Boss (Naked Snake). He was just some guy that got his face blown off, got facial reconstruction surgery to look like Big Boss, and got NANOMACHINE'd into thinking he was Boss. This is how Kojima explains how Big Boss dies in Metal Gear (MSX) but returns in the sequel, and between the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX) and Metal Gear Solid 4, Big Boss's charred remains were preserved until his head was super-glued onto Solidus Snake's body to give the epilogue at the end of MGS4, explaining why he doesn't have his "horns" or Venom "Punished's" signature scars.
Retro Like I said, all this was stuff I picked up from the Venom Snake MGS Wiki page. The only reason that he plays Big Boss, or voices Solid Snake in the deja-vu mission (the fact that he had to imitate Hayter's "Liquiiiid!" made me sick to my stomach) is because for GZ and PP Sutherland has the all encompassing role of "Snake", be it Naked, Solid, or Venom.
Dear god, his Peace Walker voice... No human sounds like that. Even MGS4 was super forced, but at least you could pin that to Snake's health and mental state. No fucking wonder they made the switchover.
hayter stated he made mgs4 snake sound the way he did was because he was fucking sick as sick can be, legit he was a walking nuclear hazard virus spreading death machine i don't see anything bad with peace walker, just your average snake voice really
In my opinion, Metal Gear Solid(1998) was Hayter's best performance. It felt more natural. In later games it sounded like he was really forcing the voice. However, David Hayter will always be the best voice for Solid Snake.
He was at its peak in MGS1 and MGS2. I heard reason he makes too much growls while talking after it, is due to his throat hurting somewhat so it was a technique to make it work
Don't give fuck what anyone says, Hayter's best performace as Big Boss was in PW. The gravelly voice is overdone, but his line delivery is some of the best vocal work Hayter's ever done (the scenes with the AI pod in particular were fantastic).
+Michael Abramov Nope. He used his 70 year old Snake voice even though he was only 39. Solid Snake doesn't have as much emotions as Big Boss, He's like a cool badass action hero with a cool hero voice. Big Boss is a soldier with probably the most emotion in the entire series so they need someone a lot more serious and realistic like Kiefer Sutherland In other words, Solid Snake: 100% David Hayter Big Boss: Kiefer Sutherland
+AlexDeGhost Kiefer Sutherland showed emotion as Big Boss???? When was this? In fact I don't even remember any of his lines from MGS5 they were so forgetful and there were so few of them anyways.
+Todd The Toddler Howard You kidding me? Not even in those cassette tapes did he show any emotions. Hayter on the other hand showed a lot more emotion in his cassette tapes in peace walker, for example when he received those tapes from EVA you could sense a ton of emotion in his voice when he spoke to Kaz about her.
+Todd The Toddler Howard Make fun of the gravelly voice all you want, to me it shows the amount of shit Big Boss has gone through prior to the events of Peace Walker and how tired he is as a soldier who's been beaten the crap out of and betrayed by so many people.
+Todd The Toddler Howard Well they could have kept those facial expressions and Hayter's voice and maybe given him a few more lines. TBH I din't really care much for MGS5's plot anyways it seemed kind of broken to me.
I loved his voices in MGS1 up until MGS3. His voice was too over the top in Peace Walker. MGS4, he was older so it made sense that his voice was wearing out.
You are saying this now, after him being not involved in MGSV as a poor attempt to excuse Kojima's decision to get involved with Hollywood actor instead
AydarBMSTU Poor attempt to excuse a decision? I'm not making some excuse at all. I love the new voice, it also suits Snake well, sounds more realistic and more mature. I wasn't comparing at all. They're both good in my opinion.
AydarBMSTU I mean, to me it sounds like a person in real life is talking in a way. The original voice for snake was quite animated and a little bit dramatic which is great. But it's still cool. I'm still used to the original voice though because I'm familiar with that one.
1) MGS1- the og. i found snakes original voice closer to hayters own, i think that's why it sounded the most natural overall. 2) MGS2 - first time we hear hayter adding the signature strain and texture to snakes voice, just gave it a boost in character. 3) MGS3 - very little difference to MGS2. 4) MGS4 - the next evolution to snakes voice due to his deteriorating state as old snake. was a cool change up, but I seriously hated the eyepatch and moustache. i never bothered with the other games. for me, the solid snake series is apex metal gear solid. the big boss storyline didn't interest me that much (besides MGS3.)
Those games are considered the tactical espionage action games, I think they are the better ones, they made me love the series, peace walker and 5 are tactical espionage operations, I thought they were weaker, 5 has good gameplay, but the structure of both those games didn’t make me like it as much
I'm doing a chronological playthrough of the series and its so much damn fun, first time ever after all these years. Recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet.
not even twin snake, its MGS1. first natural voice and not kinda forced. Plus Solid's voice is very different from Big Boss's voice. I hope kojima would remade Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 with DAVID HAYTER.
***** I know that Naked Snake and Solid Snake are two different characters, but saying snake isn't in MGS3 is incorrect as Naked Snake is the very first snake, before 3 clones were made.
***** Naked Snake IS Snake, NYitaliano89 said SNAKE wasn't in MGS3 which is incorrect, if he had said Solid Snake wasn't in MGS3 then that would have been correct. Trust me I know my MG history.
you notice the difference in the voices well, in their tone in this case. for Solid has a less obstructed voice and Big Boss a hoarse one, which is not surprising given the amount of cigars he smokes;
Adam Williams Well they fight togerther, they punch together and logically they must split a lot of blood (I think Hideo Kojima forget that) So when you try to speak without your jaw, you should sound look "graabluusongrannchuofshbbitch" If you can talk of course x)
WalkerWonders 70 year-old man with black lungs. Hayter did amazing. Snake sounds so decrepit in MGS4, and the sounds and groans Hayter made were great.
Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 were his best work (1 more so than 2, in 2 he was too relaxed and layed back). Metal Gear Solid 3 was the beginning of his "cartoony" style voice for Snake but it wasn't bad, still sounded like "authentic" Snake. Metal Gear Solid 4 was his worst performance, it was over acted and didn't capture "Snake" at all, but just sounded like an old man with no character or charisma behind him which completely destroyed the illusion of Snake set in MGS1 who was youthful and "alert" and generally switched on. *Dishonorable mention:* Peace Walker was where it all fell apart, it was so over the top with the grunting and growling that it made it sound cheesey and cartoony. It was like listening to someone over-flamboyantly rolling their "R's" whilst trying to speak Spanish (so unnecessary).
Jameslawz I agree for the most part, but I actually think his performance in 4 worked for what it was. he's supposed to be worn-out.. I mean he's dying, so you're definitely right when you say it's not really "Snake." It's like what happens when Snake's on the way out, and that's totally different than the young man we see in MGS1 and 2. But hey, that's just how I feel about it.
Kojima's reason is stupid for not using Hayter. He wanted a guy who's voice sounded like he was in his late 40s and facial expressions too? Hayter is 45 and Sutherland is 47. What's the big difference in age? It's bullshit!
He's probably trying to seperate Big Boss from Snake at this point. So when Snake and Big Boss will be in the same scene they won't have the same voice.
He wanted a famous name. It is not a creative decision at all not one bit. TBH Hayter should have never voiced Big Boss in the first place but it's too late now.
I see how it would work. Big Boss and Solid Snake are genetically identical, Solid looks a lot like Big Boss so it makes sense for him to have the voice too.
Can someone actually justify David Hayter being replaced but Akio Otsuka staying? Making the two sound different my ass. They only needed someone who can express facial dialogue and nothing more. Akio does the body movement while Keifer was brought in for facial capture. David is only good for voice work so that's why he got the boot because it would be too costly to pay 3 separate actors to portray 1 character
Except they would easily earn whatever they had to pay back. Plus David Hayter is an actor.. He probably could do facial capture. I still don't understand. The facial capture in MGS3 and 4 was fine. I don't understand who they needed an inferior voice actor to Hayter.
I couldn't stand Sutherland's voice when I hear it in GZ. From PP's demo I get my hopes up a bit more. Mostly cause Sutherland sounds a bit rougher and more like Hayter LOL. And for the excuse that BB and Solid Snake should sound different for Kojima's remake or wutever, BB and Snake are genetically identical. They even have the same habits such as smoking cigars excessively and both are military fit soldiers with identical body type make up. Why wouldn't they sound super similar? Hayter did a fine and dandy job for the MGS series imo and letting him go plus barring the fan made remake of MGS 1 and 2 after giving an A OK sort of annoyed me about this whole remove Hayter decision.
they can do face capture and have them look nothing like the actor, it's just for the movements, take nolan north and drake from uncharted, for example
Pan Z exactly. They could just tell Hayter to do the voice he did in MGS1 although i wouldn't mind the cheesyness. MGS games are very cheesy very often. Next thing you know people don't want cardboard boxes because they are unrealistic. who cares? that's part of what makes MGS awesome and different
***** Snake in MGS4 was old. It was totally normal to feel it too forced (and it suited him perfectly). However I think he's right about Peace Walker and Portable Ops and Sutherland un MGS5 was indeed a good idea.
If any games are made after TPP, I think it's fine to have Hayter as Solid and Sutherland as BB. Hayter's MGS1 and MGS2 voice was phenomenal, but he started losing it at 3, and it just got worse from there (mainly talking about PO and PW, as I'm fully aware he had to sound grunty and old in 4). Sutherland's voice work in TPP is quite good, at least when he does speak, they simply didn't give him enough dialogue.
I really found Raiden annoying because MGS was supposed to be about a badass guy who does stealth missions, then comes Raiden who has some weird Anime cut and looks more like he belongs in Final Fantasy XXXXIV or whatever they're on now.
The voice that doesn't seem compatible through the series is OCELOT'S. He has a whiny voice in snake eater and listening to him in MGSV doesnt make me believe he is same character.
+jay t cache The whiny snake eater voice I can understand due to age, I mean he was in his late 20s as opposed to later. But I do agree with MgsV, If the game didn't tell me it was ocelot, I wouldn't have thought it, it was too deep and smooth for Ocelot
So turns out I'm the only person here who likes his Peace Walker voice... Firstly, yes he can still do the MGS2 voice, he's proved that many times in interviews. Secondly, he's an actor, he played the part according to what he was asked for from the sound director. Thirdly, yes it's unrealistic, but Metal Gear is meant to be like that to some extent, comic book-esque, hollywood-esque, not ultra realist. To me, Big Boss' voice in Peace Walker perfectly demonstrates how he's evolved from Naked Snake who was at the height of his game into the gruff, grief-ridden Big Boss that is slowly becoming a Villain. In the Phantom Pain trailers, I like Sutherlands voice, suits the character well. In Ground Zeroes though, I hate it, he doesn't sound much older than Snake 11 years prior, and when he and Kaz are talking at the beginning I sometimes muddle them up. Hayter did a great job of using his voice to represent the age, status and intention of each version of Snake. However now it's all about the face, so Sutherland's voice doesn't need to be as colourful, it needs to be more realistic so that he can convey all of the emotion through facial capture. Both Sutherland and Hayter are doing a great job, they just had fairly different jobs.
+Callum Hurley "Hayter did a great job of using his voice to represent the age, status and intention of each version of Snake." Except in Peace Walker, where Big Boss sounds like he's also about to die from accelerated aging.
His MGS1 performance was fucking awesome.
It's his best. Hayter had the perfect mix of 'grizzly' and realistic.
Bumbleness Supreme Brady
That's good voice direction for you. Jeremy Blaustein is great at that, but they replaced him with amateurs afterwards.
If he could get a balance between MGS1 and MGS2 I think that would be a great balance.
was the best one, he was being directed well.
@@darkknight2864 agreed 1 year old comment! Mgs1 was perfect, became so cartoony afterward. It was all downhill after Mgs2 and Mgs4 was the worst!

Umm snakes all old in the 4th one boii how you want him to sound like a young bieber?
@@MoskHotelwoooow were gonna pretend you didnt make them kiefer comments lol
@@wasabishrimp9364 i do like keifers voice tho, its pretty epic. But its underused as fuck. It couldve been a lot better
After playing MGSV all the way through I can say I really do miss Hayter. He WAS Snake
Why
If it makes you feel better, you can sorta rationalize within the story because snake is not a perfect clone therefore, they would sound different later on I guess?
And snake does need to get older, unless we've adopted a belief that snake will never age
@@torlikoff Snake, whether Solid or Naked, both smoke a lot. Hayter has that saw voice, like someone who has too many cigarettes stuck in his throat. To me he is the voice of Snake, whether Solid or Big Boss.
There are five snakes.
I really like his MGS3 voice, he did that same one in Brawl too. It's has much more character.
Will you be adding more MGS characters and stages to REMIX?
Solid's voice in MGS1 is by far the best of the entire series.
Star Platinum yeah he sounds like a young badass without the drag on like in his later voice acting.
Star Platinum i like MGS 4 more
Mgs2 and 3 were the best. 1 was kinda underdone, in po he sounded like he was getting older and snake was raspy in four since he was old (which kinda bothered me tbh) but pw was less overacted than 4. It's sad he's not in V since it's the first game I got.
I agree. The added roughness in mgs2 was still not too distracting. In Mgs3 he dragged the last syllables wayyy too much.
I liked MGS3 the most, it's the voice I think of when I think of Snake.
The first 3 were just Snake criticizing other soldiers! xD

I think MGS2 was the best balance overall... rough but still not too far gone. He started getting a little gargly in 3, and although I forgave 4 since he's old and dying, I was disappointed that it just got even more exaggerated in subsequent games.
Well that was solid snake in his absolute Prime after all.
Diving after Metal gears and shit with nothing but a MK.1 tranquilizer gun
Well in 2, it's not Big Boss, it's Solid Snake. 3 and Peacewalker are Big Boss, and you already said why Solid Snake would have the scratchy throat. It probably doesn't have anything to do with the story, maybe it's just Hayter's progression, but I like to think it's just because they're "different" people.
I agree completely, though to be honest the progressively gravelly voice never bothered me enough to be taken out of the games. And in retrospect, the games where Hayter's voice is more gravelly are in games where the Snakes are much older than before.
in 4 he kinda sounded batman
Yeah i agree, David Hayter is the original, what upsets me is that they diss on his work after being replaced is so unfair, it's like they are saying Henry Cavill is better Superman than Christopher Reeve or Daniel Craig better Sean Connery as James Bond, Sutherland is a good actor but the problem is he doesn't sound like Big Boss, Kiefer just used his own voice, funny they the fans got David Bateson back as Agent 47 in Hitman games after being replaced, ironic that Hollywood actor Michael Ironside got replaced by another voice actor but with experience , i mean look at Anthony Ruivivar the voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne in Beware The Batman, he sounded similar to Kevin Conroy but at the same time, Anthony used his own
I only dislike his Peace Walker PErformance. Big Boss sh9ouldn't sound like Old Snake. Apart form that, he's fucking amazing
Oisín F Exactly.
What the fuck. I want hayter back, he IS snake.
"you filthy American *DAAAUHGGGH*"
DAAUGH
DOOUUGGGHHH..
David Hayter will always be Soild & Naked snake for me
David Hayter has acted in live action films before. Have you ever seen Guyver: Dark Hero?

David Hayter IS Snake.
I loved especially his performance in MGS4.
He managed to "age" his voice, to play an "aged" Snake.
Really Amazing.
He could have done the same for a middle aged Big Boss :D
Even if Sutherland seems to be doing a good job...
He's always Solid Snake, but he was never meant to be Big Boss.
I miss David Hayter as Solid Snake!
TrueFriends HelpMoveBodies Except MG4 is the last appearance of Solid Snake.
***** Your point?
Also I now take back my point. I think Solid is going to appear in 5, but with a different VA since he'll be 14 maximum.
TrueFriends HelpMoveBodies My point being, unless we get Metal Gear remakes, then we wont be hearing David's voice in any MG game ever again.
***** Well Kojima has said he'd be more than willing to let somebody remake MGS1, so...

+Sanguiluna I thought that MGS1 was the best. He sounded normal, I loved the way his voice cracked when Fox died.
His voice was only bad in peacewalker, most likely due to poor voice direction.
Although I always believed Big Boss needed a separate voice from Solid Snake, Keifer was a good choice but it is wasted in MGSV as Big Boss rarely talks in game but when he does it's great.
He was supossed to talk much more. But they cutted a lot of lines.
I'm not sure it was bad direction; I think the voice was just over looked. Cause its been the same voice director since MGS1. I bet if Kris Zimmerman watched a video like this she'd think twice about his delivery.
Why do people think his voice is bad in PW? I'm curious that's all. Is it because he kind of sounds like Old Snake instead of Big Boss?
GuyOnAChair yeah its because of that, its not entirely bad, but compared to the other characters voices in the game it stands out as weird.
David Hayter nails the Snake voice perfectly :) . I just love to hear his voice in the games :)
Conroy will always be batman but still a food analogy
speaking of batman, snake from mgs4 sounds like batman
hayter does such a good job voice acting a old snake really sounds like a cross between a old guy trying to hold on to his youth mixed with a tormented old war legend
David Hayter and Kiefer are both great voice actors and they both fit the role of big boss/snake very well. I love both of their performances.
RhymesWithOranje2010 My thoughts exactly
Pliskin - Plissken. Get it?
Yeah :D (escape from new york) Kojima had said that snake get inspired from Plissken :]
MrPhoenixGalaxy Just Plissken is self helper and shame that everybody died at end E from LA. Escape from New Jersey is pure joke, i don't want to in future be based on movie 3D cinematics and small roles in movie, it doesn't fit at all.
The name Iroquois is a reference also

Its clear that Liam Neeson should have been Bosses voice, "I will find you".
MGS1 was his best performance and sound. Although they all do sounds similar, barring MGS4 due to the ageing.
Yeah, Post-MGS4, Snake does sound gravelly....though it does make sense, Big Boss is old.
Not really. He's 39 in Peace Walker. That's not too old. He shouldn't have sounded like Old Snake yet at least.
Steven Newell
Smoke cigars all your life, that's how you'll sound at 39.
RexVergstrong ..... Touche.
Chico, Paz, and Cecile's voices were dodgy as fuck, but they were fun.
agreed, I love Peace Walker's Big Boss voice. there's just something so fun about how campy it is with the vibe of the game.
Excellent clips wish he could do mgs5
Awesome! David Hayter is incredible, will miss him in MGSV
me too! its a shame for real!
I feel like his MGS3 voice was the best since it was the perfect mix of gravel and a normal Hayter voice.
+jeff peake Nice spoiler warning.
+jeff peake
But Kefier voices BOTH Big Boss's and Big Boss was still in a coma for years (just not as long as the Medic was).
+CF-105 Games I think his point was that there was suitable time for a change in voice, rather than having it change immediately after Peace Walker.
+Matthew Kohler
I was wrong. He was in coma just as long as Venom. They both spent 9 years in a coma according to the tapes.
+Matthew Kohler
But yeah, Hayter should have been the voice for Ground Zeroes as it only takes place a few months after Peacewalker but after the coma they could have had Sutherland.
I agree. it was baaad. but Peacewalker was a great game in terms of storytelling. but yea his Snake voice sucked.
Whitefox789 Ocelot isn't a sadist, he's a pragmatist.
thats probably what killed it for him.
0:05 WTF DIDN'T EXPECT THAT XD
Amazing how theres major differences between Big Boss, Solid Snake, and Old Snake.
WHERE'S THE CARGAAUGHE?
wherrrrshhhh tha triiiiguuur where ishhh isshhhttt
+Hyan36 Well shame on the devs then. Big Boss sounding like he's also dying of accelerated aging in Peace Walker is fucking stupid.
+Hyan36
Yeah, Hayter did the old MGS1 voice at a fan request in an interview and he did it flawlessly with no hesitation. He can still naturally do it, he was directed not to.
Not to mention everyone is nullifying the fact that snake smokes HEAVILY. That will definitely have a toll on his vocals.
Hrrng, Colonel. I'm trying to sneak around, but I'm dummy thicc and the clap from my ass cheeks keep alerting the guards.
His voice acting after MGS was probably better, but my childhood disagrees.
He just sounds so badass...
Best voice for Solid Snake: David Hayter
Best voice for Big Boss: Keith Sutherland
***** I think Hayter sounds too young for Big Boss. Kiefer sounds like a real experienced veteran soldier who's been through some shit, way more fitting for Big Boss.
Richard Doyle's the best Big Boss in my opinion, but that's also kinda cheating.
Dank Sloth Snake had been through more shit than Boss, BB just took it worse.
MGS4's ending, BB admits this Lmao.
Pedro Juan although keifer still had the gravely as a sidewalk voice.
+Pan Z Rumor is Kojima had been trying to replace him since MGS3, don't know why.
MKG176 Becuase Kojima wanted a hollywood actor. He tried to get Kurt Russel in MGS3
Pan Z I guess that explains it then. Sad tho, it's like Kojima doesn't understand his fan base.
MKG176 Well he seemed to hate his fans in MGS4, and not care when it came to MGSV
+Pan Z jackass he said he wanted somebody that could act without their voice and Sutherland could 32nd of story
"Saftey is not even off"
Nigga, the gun stock is halfway up Meryl's shoulder...
He probably just tried to make her focus on something else. Like in that one scene in MGS4, where Old Snake disarms Johnny.
I love his MGS 4 voice because it actually sounds like an older version of himself that’s smoked too many cigarettes and is also slowly dying at the same time.
Thanks for putting all of these clips together. It was interesting to hear the development of the voice over the years, especially the subtle differences between each game.
Hayter will always be our Snake. Such outstanding vocals.
Hayter did the best voice in the first Metal Gear solid and they also gave Snake the coolest lines and he was the most snarky like the you must be a real threat in the muck tuck eating contests that line still cracks me up.
He was the bomb in Peace Walker, people say it went wrong etc.
But the voice and convos in PW were the best!
I wish they just used Kiefer for MGS3 from the beginning and when 5 rolled around used him for the body double and Hayter for Ahab, you fucking know it would've worked.
Me too, I've always kinda wished Big Boss had a different voice from the start.
Why can't we all just agree that Kiefer Sutherland is now Big Boss while David Hayter will always be Solid Snake?

*SERIOUS SPOILERS, LIKE, FOR REAL DON'T CLICK "READ MORE" UNLESS YOU WANT ALL OF MGSV RUINED FOR YOU*
Funny thing, Kiefer Sutherland isn't and never will be Big Boss; he's Venom Snake.
Alex Foxx Did you even play the game? He plays Big Boss too... Did you not play Ground Zero's, The prologue, or hear the truth tapes?
Retro Like I said, all this was stuff I picked up from the Venom Snake MGS Wiki page. The only reason that he plays Big Boss, or voices Solid Snake in the deja-vu mission (the fact that he had to imitate Hayter's "Liquiiiid!" made me sick to my stomach) is because for GZ and PP Sutherland has the all encompassing role of "Snake", be it Naked, Solid, or Venom.
MGS3 performance.
Snake Eater? That was the worst voice acting I've ever heard. He sounded like a teenager trying to do a "cool" voice.
Dryftburn still better than ground zeroes. His voice is different. The new guy has a very ordinary voice.
The MGs3 performance was amazing
I love his voice in Peace walker. It's so perfect :D

And yeah mgs1 voice sounds cool aswell
Snake didnt want to reveal himself thats why he said his name is pliskin.Cant believe people thought pliskin and snake is the same one person.
Raiden in MGS4 sounds like he's taking voice cues from snake
And then in Rising he sounds like a psycho
Dear god, his Peace Walker voice...
No human sounds like that. Even MGS4 was super forced, but at least you could pin that to Snake's health and mental state. No fucking wonder they made the switchover.
I dunno man I thought it was kinda cool, if a bit over-done.
Indeed, indeed!
hayter stated he made mgs4 snake sound the way he did was because he was fucking sick as sick can be, legit he was a walking nuclear hazard virus spreading death machine
i don't see anything bad with peace walker, just your average snake voice really
LOL, I like your epic wordage man!
FoxMikeHawk I agree, But I also think 3 is too.
In my opinion, Metal Gear Solid(1998) was Hayter's best performance. It felt more natural. In later games it sounded like he was really forcing the voice. However, David Hayter will always be the best voice for Solid Snake.
He was at its peak in MGS1 and MGS2. I heard reason he makes too much growls while talking after it, is due to his throat hurting somewhat so it was a technique to make it work
David hayter did a really good job for mgs4
“So, you killed Kenny… You bastard!”
Sorry, couldn’t help myself 😂
Don't give fuck what anyone says, Hayter's best performace as Big Boss was in PW. The gravelly voice is overdone, but his line delivery is some of the best vocal work Hayter's ever done (the scenes with the AI pod in particular were fantastic).
+Michael Abramov Nope. He used his 70 year old Snake voice even though he was only 39. Solid Snake doesn't have as much emotions as Big Boss, He's like a cool badass action hero with a cool hero voice.
Big Boss is a soldier with probably the most emotion in the entire series so they need someone a lot more serious and realistic like Kiefer Sutherland
In other words, Solid Snake: 100% David Hayter
Big Boss: Kiefer Sutherland
Yeah... his voice just goes more raspy and purr-y.
I really don't like how Pliskin was voice by the same voice actor as Snake
Yeah man not only did they replace Snake as the main character but they also had some random guy have the same voice as Snake
Snakes voice in mgs1 is the best sounds the most subdued
Im not sure if you’re aware, but this series isn’t about subtlety 😂😂😂
I loved his voices in MGS1 up until MGS3. His voice was too over the top in Peace Walker. MGS4, he was older so it made sense that his voice was wearing out.
You are saying this now, after him being not involved in MGSV as a poor attempt to excuse Kojima's decision to get involved with Hollywood actor instead
AydarBMSTU Poor attempt to excuse a decision? I'm not making some excuse at all. I love the new voice, it also suits Snake well, sounds more realistic and more mature. I wasn't comparing at all. They're both good in my opinion.
Suits Snake well - nah, more mature - in what way? More bricky is how I'd describe it
AydarBMSTU I mean, to me it sounds like a person in real life is talking in a way. The original voice for snake was quite animated and a little bit dramatic which is great. But it's still cool. I'm still used to the original voice though because I'm familiar with that one.
+AydarBMSTU
Spoiler alert
There's a reason Hayter doesn't voice Venom Snake
To be fair the og games voice lines were done in a hotel room so the acoustics might've been different making him sound different
MGS1 and 2 were easily my favorite performances.
mgs2 characters are still amazing looking. such a huge jump from ps1. imo best looking game on the ps2, and still has great physics and animations.
4) MGS4 - the next evolution to snakes voice due to his deteriorating state as old snake. was a cool change up,
but I seriously hated the eyepatch and moustache.
i never bothered with the other games. for me, the solid snake series is apex metal gear solid. the big boss storyline didn't interest me that much (besides MGS3.)

Those games are considered the tactical espionage action games, I think they are the better ones, they made me love the series, peace walker and 5 are tactical espionage operations, I thought they were weaker, 5 has good gameplay, but the structure of both those games didn’t make me like it as much
I agree with the comment but I don't like anything released after 3
To me the solid eye and moustache make Solid look.. 😍 I'm not sure why so many people dislike them.
I'm doing a chronological playthrough of the series and its so much damn fun, first time ever after all these years. Recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet.
I think it was MG3 and Twin Snakes that gave Snake his "iconic" voice.
***** Yes he is, he was known as Naked Snake before receiving the title of Big Boss.
Eustace P kind of no, solid snake is a clone of naked/big boss
not even twin snake, its MGS1. first natural voice and not kinda forced.
Trust me I know my MG history.
you notice the difference in the voices well, in their tone in this case. for Solid has a less obstructed voice and Big Boss a hoarse one, which is not surprising given the amount of cigars he smokes;
His MGS4 performance was his best. hands down. I really hope Kojima changes his mind and remakes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
"gurglegurglegurgleLIQUUUIIIIIIIIDDDDDgurglemrrrrrrgrgrgrgrg."
Quality voice acting.
loool good point..
Adam Williams Well they fight togerther, they punch together and logically they must split a lot of blood (I think Hideo Kojima forget that)
So when you try to speak without your jaw, you should sound look "graabluusongrannchuofshbbitch"
If you can talk of course x)
Adam Williams To be fair he was basically a 65 year old man(physically) with black lungs so in that regard Hayter got the job done.
WalkerWonders 70 year-old man with black lungs. Hayter did amazing. Snake sounds so decrepit in MGS4, and the sounds and groans Hayter made were great.
That was some fancy voice-acting. You're pretty good.
Hayters voice is too damn cheesy
Amen.
www.troll.me/images/ahmadinejad-troll/bitch-please-just-shut-the-fuck-up.jpg Nuff said.
^Butthurt cuz his voice acting is horrible.
By 4 he starts sounding like Solid Batman. “WHERE’S LIQUID?!?!”
Kojima's reason is stupid for not using Hayter. He wanted a guy who's voice sounded like he was in his late 40s and facial expressions too? Hayter is 45 and Sutherland is 47. What's the big difference in age? It's bullshit!
in mgs4, Big boss is played by Doyle, who sounds like an old man. Hayter is Big Boss's "young" voice. Sutherland sounds in between the two.
He's probably trying to seperate Big Boss from Snake at this point. So when Snake and Big Boss will be in the same scene they won't have the same voice.
That's probably a good idea... just hearing two people with the same grumpy raspy voice talking to each other seems funny.
Hayter's performance changes notably with MGS3. It's less suave & astringent, and more nasally. Wonder if anything happened to his voice.
Digital-Scratch MGS4's lip syncing was fine. The facial expressions looked genuine, and the actor used wasn't Otsuka or Hayter.
Mgs1 was his best performance
I like the original's voice work the best. Too forced in later games.
+ingo505 are you talking about snake in MGS4?
***** Snake in MGS4 was old. It was totally normal to feel it too forced (and it suited him perfectly). However I think he's right about Peace Walker and Portable Ops and Sutherland un MGS5 was indeed a good idea.
+The Cardboard Guys
Chiceoo...do you know where they put the carggooooouuuggghhhhhh
+Nick Paternostro lol
+DimebagVision Sutherland kicks Hayter's ass when is comes to Big Boss
MGS 4 voice acting was superb, look at the emotions and the tones behind every sentence snake spoke.
MGS, The best dubbing in a ps1 game. It feels like it's a movie already.
I'm still hoping Kojima fucks with us and he'll come back for The Phantom Pain. He IS NAKED & SOLID Snake!!!!
They need to change the voice as time goes on to make him seem more like Big Boss from MGS4
You speak for all of us, friend.
Alex Tesdahl That's some deep shit.
AwkwardWhiteKid97 Yeah? So why they DID NOT change the voice actor in the Japanese version? This makes me think that it's all about money :(
No, screw you all. The Patriots still exist - and they purposefully did not use David Hayter. Don't you get it? The Patriots ARE Kojima
i think his performance in V is massively under-rated
I really found Raiden annoying because MGS was supposed to be about a badass guy who does stealth missions, then comes Raiden who has some weird Anime cut and looks more like he belongs in Final Fantasy XXXXIV or whatever they're on now.
Cannon Fodder And now Raiden is a badass guy who goes on hack and slash missions.
"Just like my Japanese animes!"
Cannon Fodder That would be Final Fantasy XLIV.
Cannon Fodder. you have to admit though. as goofy as he is by now, mgr is fucking AWSOME.
Tried to put this on as some kind of ASMR while trying to fall asleep. Started bawling like a little child when the MGS4 scenes kicked in.
Oof
I think he sounded best in MGS2 and MGS3. Perfect balance of gruffness and smoothness.
God, Im gonna miss that voice in MGS5, but I will get through it.
David Hayter is the only man I'd ever go gay for. Especially in his MGS4 voice...
It’s funny seeing subtitles for peace walker when the words are already on the screen
+ShadowVincent3 ocelot was actually 19 in mgs3
*****
Well, there you go, i seem to have made a mistake.
you can really hear the silver the hedgehog voice in raiden
+Callum Hurley "Hayter did a great job of using his voice to represent the age, status and intention of each version of Snake."
Except in Peace Walker, where Big Boss sounds like he's also about to die from accelerated aging.
to be fair i liked peace walkers voice too it just sounded unique to me and i kinda like it better because he dounds funny
