Buster Keaton (born as Joseph Frank Keaton in 1895, Piqua, Kansas - died in 1966, Woodland Hills, California, U.S.A.) is an American actor and film director. The son of wandering vaudeville actors, Keaton was forced to tread upon stage already at the early age of 3. In his late 20s, he went to New York and began working as the sidekick of the comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, to continue from then on his solo career.
His ever-serious deadpan expression will earn him the nickname “The Great Stone Face”. His comedy, bordering on the surreal, and in fact, he was much loved by the surrealists, constantly plays on the contrasts of true/false, dream/reality, and in a world that is in constant change. Often towards catastrophe, his expression is the only firm point that reveals the contradictions and the most absurd aspects; moreover, in many of his creations, Keaton stages the methods and the cinema itself: metalinguistic elements appear in many of his films and in particular in The Playhouse :
    • Video
    in Sherlock Jr. :
    • Video
or in The Cameraman . But the advent of sound put an end to his career, as well as that of many other silent film comedians, whose comedy was based on physical gags and therefore no longer suitable for sound cinema.

"He was a lovely person and a supreme artist and, I think, one of the most beautiful people that was ever photographed" -- Orson Welles on Buster Keaton. Sums it up pretty well for me too.

More: "He was, as we are now beginning to realize the greatest of all the clowns in the history of the cinema...He was a lovely person, and a supreme artist, and I think one of the most beautiful people that was ever photographed...Keaton was beyond all praise, a very great artist, also a superb director. In the last analysis, nobody came near him…I wish I’d known him better than I did. A tremendously nice person, you know, but also a man of secrets. I can’t even imagine what they were." - Orson Welles

To see at 17:00 the ORIGINAL Yankee Stadium, only 4 years old, before the completion of the wraparound upper decks, makes this an historical gem in and of itself!

The bit where he's running up and down the stairs in his building is so good. This may be one of my favourite movies of his. I love the crackly soundtrack as well, it's very charming.

AMAZING ❣❣❣ Many words to say about this movie !.. I thought Buster Keaton's best movie was The General (1926), but this movie is a masterpiece. The General was an action-packed movie, but this movie is loaded with heavy doses of emotion from start to finish. Buster Keaton's films became a benchmark for the films that came after him. This movie is one of the biggest examples of this.

Man with a Movie Camera is famous for the range of cinematic techniques Vertov invented, employed or developed, such as multiple exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, match cuts, jump cuts, split screens, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, reversed footage, stop motion animations and self-reflexive visuals (at one point it features a split-screen tracking shot; the sides have opposite Dutch angles).
Man with a Movie Camera was largely dismissed upon its initial release; the work's fast cutting, self-reflexivity, and emphasis on form over content were all subjects of criticism. In the British Film Institute's 2012 Sight & Sound poll, however, film critics voted it the 8th greatest film ever made,[4] the 9th greatest in the 2022 poll, an

Naturally, Buster Keaton has always been the dominant character in his films. Actresses were among the others who completed the films. In this movie, Marceline Day left her mark strongly. Even though Audrey Hepburn and Julia Roberts never speak, they can carry a movie with just their looks. Marceline Day inspired these actresses with this movie. She was magic !!!
