I suffer with both mental and physical health problems, and for some reason I find cleaning the bathroom the hardest task of all. Last week, I put on an audiobook that I was really into before I started cleaning. I ended up doing 4 HOURS of bathroom cleaning without even noticing! I organised and decluttered every little item on every shelf and even descaled the shower heads! Focusing on something else works wonders for me.

Lately, I have a new saying to myself; “If you see something, do something!” So if I open the fridge & see dirt on the bottom shelf, I clean it…this has really helped me 😊

Start on a small task but a spot that you see daily. Like the dishes in the sink or the stovetop. It will be gratifying at each passing. Then maybe the countertop next to that area. Little by little it will feel more satisfying and accomplished. Don’t expect all this in one day. It will take time. Hope you feel better.

This is also a GREAT video for those of us who struggle with chronic health/pain issues. I have chronic migraines (15+per month). On my good days, picking one project to start is my strategy. I absolutely agree with making self-care a priority too though! Now, I think...I feel pretty good today...what is one thing that needs to be done, and also, what is one thing that would bring me joy? On some days, this does mean a little more cleaning because I'm enjoying it. On others, it might look like...I'll mop the floors and then do some art.

If I'm struggling I remind myself that my hubby gets up everyday at 5am to go to work and provide a beautiful home for us the least I can do is make sure he comes home to a tidy house. Doesn't always work but most times it does. And thankfully my hubby never says a word about it if it doesn't. He actually will just start pitching in and doing stuff. I'm pretty lucky to have him.

  • @stellacalder5023
    @stellacalder5023 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

5:45 In my house, we call this "chain" cleaning or "might as well" cleaning and it usually happens when I'm just so fed up with the mess I start by fixing one thing then noticing something else while I'm finishing the first. It usually goes something like "these towels are dirty, let's put them in the hamper" -> "I might as well replace all the towels on my way to put this away" -> "there was a dirty tissue in the closet, I should throw that away"-> "wow, there's a lot of trash around the house, I'm going to pick it up on my way to throw this away" -> "the trash can is full, I'm going to empty it" -> "the garage doorknob is gross, I'm going to wipe that off" -> "I have the disinfecting spray out, I might as well do all the knobs and light switches."
It's sometimes hard to let go and feel like I'm just flailing around, cleaning in circles, but it's really just letting the lower-level, emotion-driven parts of my brain snag on the things that still need to be cleaned based on how much anxiety or frustration they give me compared to the other things that still need to be done. It's not as efficient or practical as it might have been if I'd made a list to follow, but in these situations where I'm "chain cleaning" instead of "routine cleaning," I'll usually get overwhelmed and give up if I stop to make a methodical list first, so being flexible like this is really important for the overall cleanliness of my house. Even doing this for just 30 minutes or so can get whatever overwhelm or anxiety had built up back down to a level where I can get back to my routines the next day.

This may be the best video, you´ve ever made. And I have seen many great videos on your channel 😊I have two kinds of areas in my house. The first is "just do it" areas. These are areas, that I want to keep clean, and that I know CAN be kept clean if I spend 10 min a day cleaning. My sink, the kitchen table, surfaces on the toilet and clothes put away ect. The second kind is "just do it when it´s time" areas. These are areas that I don´t mind if they get a bit dirty from time to time. The floors for example. So I only vacuum when it starts being annoying to me. This means that if I have a periode with no motivation to clean, I allow myself to rest - except for the 10 min. a day where I "just do it".

My bad days are amplified when my house isnt clean! So sometimes it helps to get things tidy, other times its a struggle. I pride myself that i do 90% of the cleaning, laundry, and food prep, but hubby jumps in whenever he can. He takes care of broken things, the lawn, etc and works a lot of OT, I work a pretty normal work week. So i dont like asking him for help but im very fortunate that I can have him help! I recently started a new job with a very new work schedule which has thrown a wrench into my cleaning schedule, so in the meantime of finding my new groove I've asked for help. He may not clean how I "love" but he gets the job done and we work as a team. And i really try to rely on my "most important areas" when i am busy or overwhelmed rather than keeping the entire house clean. Not every space needs to he important 100% of the time!

I used to think having a ridged cleaning schedule would help me be organized but it just stressed me out. Now my chores are the same as I give my kids. Do the top 3 rotating tasks. For me it’s laundry, dishes and decluttering the counter/table. Then if I still have energy I’ll do more. If not. I did enough for the day. Working on trying to give myself more grace. Homes are supposed to be lived and clean enough to be healthy but dirty enough to be happy. You’re probably doing better than you think you are ❤❤❤

I'm a list maker. If I'm struggling and my comprehensive digital list feels overwhelming, I switch back to paper and pen. I put a MAXIMUM of 3 narrowly defined tasks on the list. (Vacuum the bathroom fan instead of clean the bathroom.) If I don't know where to start, I do the dishes. Nothing beats the physical act of crossing something off a list!

I love the timer idea. Kind of reminds of school when you couldn't wait for your least favorite class (gym for me) was over. You knew it would eventually end, so you could bear it. To motivate myself, I'll tackle one area first and make sure whatever I do is really visible, like clean and buff the kitchen sink. Because I'm a visual person, when I go to that place and allow myself to admire my work, I find that it actually helps make me feel accomplished and often motivates me to do more. At least for another 5 minutes! 💖

I took a spiritual workshop about 22 years ago, and yes I'm old. We were suppose to pick a spiritual practice that was new to us and do it every dday, then report back once/month for a year. So, I picked saying a mantra, which was a mini prayer to God, over and over again while I did something I absolutely hated for 30 min every morning. You guessed it, my most hated thing to do was cleaning. Every morning, I cleaned the kitchen for 30 min saying my mantra and pretty soon I could stay in that happy place while cleaning. Over the years, I used the same mantra/prayer whenever I had to do something mindless that I hate doing or going someplace I did not want to go. To this day, 20 years later, I begin the morning cleaning the kitchen..

This is a great vlog Melissa. I’m sure 99% can relate. It only takes a few successive days of work, social commitments, late nights for the chores to pile up leaving you feeling overwhelmed, drained and out of control. I find the best way is to tackle one job eg iron and put away the clean laundry that has piled up in the guest room. Once I see the fruits of my labour and how nice it looks this seems to give me a boost to tackle another job and so on. Keep going if you seem to be on a roll. Thanks for your advice as always

I often make to do lists. Sometimes just getting it all down on paper relieves the stress in my brain. Sometimes the list helps me see what is actually most important if I only have time or inclination to do one or two things. And other times the list is just too overwhelming! You’re definitely right about knowing yourself and understanding what will work for you personally on different days! My current strategy is a big list on a sheet of paper, but then there are spaces at the top of the sheet for 2 post it notes for “today” and “tomorrow” where I transfer just a few jobs from the main list. That way I’m not worried about forgetting all the things, but just focusing on a few at a time.

I might make a list and pick one thing I'm drawn to ..maybe the easy one or maybe the one I'd get the most satisfaction or relief from. Or, I put a video on, music, or a podcast and almost get into a meditative state. Or, I just organize something small and see if that grows into something more. But, I honor where I am at so I may not do anything and that's ok.

I've been following your TH-cam channel for a few years now, and I remembered thinking that you looked alot like my English teacher back in middle school (also the same last name).
After seeing your instagram feed, my hunch was once again validated! I'm pretty sure your mother taught my English class in either grade 6 or 7, at Bayview Middle School!! 😅😂

I think it is also do with interiors of the house a modern house is definitely easy to clean and one would feel motivated to clean , but a traditional or old house is harder to clean , more mould , dark walls , rough tiles etc
I think interior design plays a major role in motivation to clean and keep clean

I am sorry you are struggeling! I have a favorite video, from years ago. where chad cleans the whole whose. I turn that on as motivation. Its the best! Also, I have a disabilty and chronic pain, so for me, a decluttered home is really important, so the cleaning goes as fast as possible. I used to have an appartment , after surgery, or when having really bad phases, which was just horrible, embarrasing, and made me to not want to have visitors. Now, the flat looks at least tidy, because theres is not much stuff, and does not get embarassing.I also have little habits to clean on the go, so I never really have to do a whole house clean. I learned a lot from you and clutterbug. And regarding deep cleans, i only do 1 task so it does not wear me out physically.

One tip I have : use gloves ! Sometimes I don’t want to clean because I don’t like my hands to get wet or dirty 😿 but when I put my gloves on 🧤 I can clean more efficiently, also if your gloves are tight they’re hard to get off 😂 so I keep cleaning 🧼

I've never had discipline, everything is emotional. Working according to lists would kill my motivation. I have various strategies to motivate myself, but they don't always work emotionally. But what has motivated me for many months is: hey, you can do the 5 minutes... and then you'll feel better... I'm so happy about it. But the prerequisite for me was to have a basic order... everything has a place - in its place.

My best way to get things done when I am not feeling up for it(aka 80% of the time) I put on a good podcast or audio book and/or I set a certain number of things to put away or clean and only do those things. Simular to setting a timer.

When I’m having a hard day, I take a few mins, run through the day and figure out if it’s a bad day all around or if I’ve had a few bad moments. I vent to a friend quick or my husband, and then I get out of my head and remember how much my family means to me, and how I’ll thank myself later🙂

I always find when I’m completely unmotivated to get stuff done, I pick the one cleaning task that I enjoy most (for me that’s vacuuming) and I do it until the battery stops. Sitting back and seeing things look and feel cleaner just by doing that one task, usually gets me motivated to tackle other things.
The other thing that always gets me cleaning is having an argument with my husband. When I’m mad, I power clean. (Of course, there are times when said husband pushes buttons on purpose because after 30 years of marriage, he knows this about me) 😂

Such great advice! ❤️❤️ To get in cleaning mode I put on Taylor Swift essentials on my Apple phone and go to town! Lol… I don’t know what it is about it that gets me in the mood, but it works for me.. Find what works for you. If you’re just not in the mood, it can wait. Not the end of the world. There is always tomorrow. A to do list to me seems like a chore or work! Hard pass 😬

If you see it, you clean it. I’ll walk in a room and the first thing I see that needs done gets cleaned. After that it’s fine to walk away or keep going. For me it defeats the elephant in the room or the task hidden at the bottom of the pile.

I was adding vinegar to my laundry every wash and then it was said during a cleaning video or appliance cleaning video it was said never use vinegar it will ruin the washing machine destroy the belts, plastic parts etc., which did not make sense to me because how does the water reach belts and other parts, etc.? So, I am asking you since I just saw you, I think, adding vinegar as you have suggested and why I started and love what it does for the cleaning of cloths, no smells either, is there any validity to this said? Thank you in advance.

Just so you know “On the struggle bus” is a derogatory statement referencing children and people with disabilities/special needs and how “they”all ride together on the same bus purposefully separate from others without disability. Thats a big conversation but the main point is People use this term generically-to fit their situation in a lighthearted or comical or illustrative purpose i did too until someone nicely explained to me where this stems from and bigger picture issues-ultimately showing me why its tasteless rude and offensive. Just figured id pass it along.
